Two dead in apparent murder-suicide By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com COVINGTON – A Covington couple is dead after an apparent murder-suicide last week. Just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, dispatchers received a call that shots had been fired in the 700 block

of Long Avenue. While on the phone, the complainant told the dispatcher another shot had been heard. "The original call came in that there was a dispute at the residence," said Det. Larry McGarrity of the Covington Police Department. "There was a secondary call that

came in to shots being fired at the same location." Officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to 720 Long Avenue near the intersection of Peete Street. The Leader was on location as first responders worked tirelessly to resuscitate the couple. The female died on the scene.

The male subject was taken to the Covington Fire Department's North Station to be airlifted, but died before being transported. Police have identified the deceased as Allegra Michelle Pierce, 38, and Rickey Louis Malon, 49. The Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office determined

Pierce's death a homicide and said she died of multiple gunshot wounds. Malone, formerly a machinist for Wright Medical and a member of Canaan Grove M. B. Church's male chorus, died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head. His death was ruled a suicide. SEE MURDER, PAGE A2

City officials pledge to rebuild COVINGTON – A $1,000 reward is being offered by the City of Covington for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for burning down the community playground on Tuesday night. For years it was a place filled with smiles and children’s laughter but Tuesday evening it was one filled with heartache and disbelief as residents watched in shock as Covington’s beloved playground, Project Play, burned to the ground.

At approximately 6:28 p.m., a 911 call came across the scanner of a grass fire at Cobb-Parr Park. By the time the Covington Fire Department had arrived moments later, the fire had engulfed the entire playground. In the summer of 2003, the playground was built by volunteers who contributed their time and more than $200,000 to its construction. “Right now, it’s an arson fire,” said Covington Fire Chief Jerry Craig. “Somebody appears to have soaked it using some type of flammable liqSEE ASHES PAGE A3
