Benefit concert scheduled for Project Play By SHERRI ONORATI sonorati@covingtonleader.com The blazing fire which lit up the Covington skyline on Tuesday, Feb. 23, may have destroyed Cobb-Parr Park’s Project Play but it did not destroy the community support which is still rallying around the city to help raise the monies needed to rebuild the beloved
playground. Following several fund raisers, more than $21,000 has been raised for the play area rebuilding project. But more is still needed. On Saturday, March 27, a Project Play benefit concert featuring the national 2008 Colgate Country Showdown winners, Nash Street, will be held at the historic Ruffin Theater to raise additional funds.
“The architect and engineers who designed the playground no longer recommend the original material and recommend a fire retardant material which we expect to be more expensive,” said Covington Mayor David Gordon. “Additional expenses will be needed to cover increased lighting, design changes for safety purposes, security cameras and necessary improvements in drainage and surface materials.”
The concert promises to be a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to witness the emergence of one of country music’s hottest acts. Nash Street, whose unique style of music is often referred to as grassroots country, plays with a blend of acoustic instrumentation, Southern traditions and an appreciation for bluegrass and country music. COVINGTON – The Tipton County Sheriff's Office is searching for two men suspected in the armed robbery a Dollar General store Tuesday night. The men, who wore white cloths over their faces, entered the store at Hwy. 14 and AtokaIdaville Road at approximately 8:39 p.m. and demanded the store's cash. Authorities said the suspects were armed with a shot gun. The store was occupied by two clerks and a customer at the time of the incident. "Even though the suspects were armed, everyone escaped injury," said Deputy Chief Donna Turner. The men fled the scene on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. The first suspect was described as wearing a

The second man was armed with a shotgun and wore a red hooded sweatshirt, jeans, white gloves and a white cloth over his face with eye holes cut into it. Detectives need assistance from the public in finding the robbers. "We're needing people to help," said Turner. "We need them to look
at the pictures of the suspects and help us identify them." Persons having information on the identities of these suspects or other information regarding the incident are asked to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at the Tipton County Sheriff's Office at (901) 475-3300. Ladies and gentleman … children of all ages … step right up to the big top and see the 2010 Shrine Circus! The 68th annual circus event will descend upon the Agricenter's Showplace Arena Thursday, March 18 to Sunday, March 21. "Children love it and adults do too," said shriner William "Bill" Preslar. "It's a good place to take the kids." The Shrine Circus touts itself as a "quality, fun-filled, family experience," and the lineup promises not to disappoint. Hosted by Ringmaster Devin Chandler, the circus is set to include mid-air maneuvering and acrobatics by Espanas Extreme Swing; Piolita, the wackiest clown in the world; Erika Zerbini and the Liberty Horses; high energy, skilled acrobatics by Dandino; astounding aerial artistry by Guillermina; The Markov and some fine, four-legged canine friends; Nadia's strength and agility exhibition; Martin and Visan on the Wheel of Destiny; jugglers; performing pachyderms and more.
Additionally, concessions will be served and there may be a chance to have photographs taken with a Bengal Tiger. There will also be face painting, elephant rides, pony rides, an inflatable slide and a moonbounce, reported Preslar. Each year temples across the country host the Shrine Circus as a fundraiser whose proceeds benefit the temple's operating costs. The proceeds from this circus directly benefit the Al Chymia Shrine, of which many Tipton Countians are members. "The proceeds benefit the temple so we can continue to donate other funds to help with the children's hospitals," Preslar said. Every day more than $2 million is spent to provide medical care for children at Shriners Hospitals. And, in the last 86 years, more than 865,000 children have been provided with free medical care because of the generosity of the Shriners. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a one-of-a-kind international health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching SEE CIRCUS, PAGE A3
