Board: No need to make up snow days By TYLER LINDSEY tlindsey@covingtonleader.com When winter settles into the area, students, parents and teachers alike keep a weather eye out for that slippery precipitation of snow and ice and the disruptions that follow along with it. Since Christmas, the Tipton County school calendar in 2011 has been dotted with school closures due to inclement weather. “It’s always best to err on the side of caution,” said director of schools Tim Fite. snow days “The safety remaining of our students comes before anything else.” The current state law allows Tipton County schools to stockpile 10 snow days to be built in to the calendar. The days can be used to cancel school if the board of education deems the weather unsafe for travel. The Tipton County school system is able to do this because school is in session each day 30 minutes past the required seven hours dictated by state law. As a result of using the snow days, the rest of the calendar remains unchanged up to a certain amount of cancelled school days. After 10 are used up this year, days will begin being taken from spring break and then will be added on the end of the year. However, the system is in the clear, so far. Only four school

Winter has certainly made a statement in Tipton County in 2011. The area saw two snowfalls this week, prompting early dismissals from school on both Monday and Wednesday. eather is always a popular topic of conversation - and never more than when Mother Nature greets the South with something its residents aren’t used to. Tipton County was buzzing this week when snow began falling during the morning commute Monday, prompting a noon dismissal for Tipton County schools. More snowfall, which began midday Wednesday, led to another early dismissal. Forecasters say this could be the last big snowfall of the season, though. “There will be a pattern change that I’m expecting to be in place by the end of the week,” said Action News 5 meteorologist Ron Childers. “We likely will not deal with successive cold going into March.” Prior to Wednesday’s wintry weather, the area had already seen above average snowfall since December. Childers said the average snowfall amount is 5.5 inches; thus far the Memphis area has recorded 6.6 inches, not counting the totals from Wednesday’s event. The total is higher in Tipton County. “Tipton County’s seen a little more snow than Memphis,” he said. “On Monday

By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com On Sunday, the community will come together in its annual Black History Month celebration at Collins Chapel C.M.E. Church. Originally started by Carter G. Woodson as Negro History Week in 1926, Black History Month is a time in which

the history and contributions of African-Americans is honored and celebrated. Collins Chapel’s event, which has been held for many years in Covington, will feature the Rev. Keith Norman of First Baptist Broad Avenue in Memphis as speaker. In addition to his pastoral duties, Pastor Norman is a much-sought-after guest

speaker, evangelist and lecturer who has an extensive speaking schedule throughout the United States and abroad. In 2006, he was chosen to join a group of ministers from various areas of the United States to participate in a revival in Guyana, South America. Pastor Norman has also received invitations SEE EVENT, PAGE A3

A night of fine dining and dancing is enjoyable by nearly everyone, yet not many get the chance to get out and partake in one. This year, the Tipton County Commission on Aging (TCCA) is urging community members to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a uniquely grand manner this year. On Saturday, Feb. 12, the TCCA is holding its first Valentine’s Day dinner, “A Night to Remember,” at the Covington Chamber Center on the court square. “We are very excited to do this,” said TCCA Executive Director Molly Egg. “We want to give the community an opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s Day by providing a wonderful, local night out.” The semi-formal event is kicked off with dinner at 6 p.m. The menu will be developed and prepared by the executive chef team at Billings Bald Butcher. “We have a great band playing great music,” said Egg. “Plus, the food will be fantastic.” After dinner is served, dancing will follow and entertainment provided by The Jim Mahannah Band will commence.
