housands of dollars were raised at the annual March of Dimes Breakfast for Babies event, held in Covington Friday. A pre-cursor to the annual March for Babies, the breakfast kicks off fundraising for the organization. “We raised $830 in tips plus the $1,500 sponsorship for the event, making the total for the event $ 2,230,” said community director Jeannie Patrick. “This was awesome.” Celebrity waiters - like county clerk Mary Gaither, Covington-Tipton County Chamber of Commerce Director Lee Johnston and bankers Bobby Chapman and C.H. Sullivan - served guests and earned tips for the non-profit organization. March for Dimes is a national organization which began over 70 years ago to combat childhood diseases and teach pregnant women about the necessity of prenatal care. March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser, helps fund lifesaving research and educational programs aimed at helping moms have healthy babies. Last year, the Covington march raised more than $44,000; this year, March for Babies Chair Skipper Bondurant hopes to bring in even more by focusing on new revenue and helping to raise awareness in the area. “One in eight of our babies here in Covington is born premature, and that’s just not acceptable,” Bondurant said. March for Babies will take place on April 30. Teams wishing to participate can sign up at www.marchforbabies.org.

A Burlison man is being held on a $100,000 bond after police say he solicited a sexual act from a pre-teen girl and physically assaulted another last week. Reports from the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office indicate on Saturday, March 5, an Elm Grove Road woman made a complaint 41-year-old Donald Lee Reburn had struck a nine-yearold in the face, neck, arms, buttocks and legs. The child’s mothREBURN er told police Reburn had been drinking earlier in the evening and drove the nine-year-old and two other children to a nearby store, then returned to his Elm Grove residence. She said the assault came after the nine-year-old confronted Reburn, who allegedly made sexual advances toward one of the other children. “The 11-year-old indicated Reburn had asked her to ‘flash’ him and made sexual comments and advances to her,” said Deputy Chief Donna Turner, spokesperson for the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office. Reburn is already a registered sex offender, convicted of statutory rape in 1993.

Mississippi rises above flooding By TYLER LINDSEY tlindsey@covingtonleader.com With the flood of May 1, 2010 in mind, many Tipton County residents have been wary of rising water in the lower Mississippi River areas causing some flooding in surrounding bottomlands. Last weekend, the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for every county surrounding the Mississippi River from Cairo, Ill. southward to the mouth of the White River in Arkansas. In the counties of Tipton, Lauderdale and Shelby the effects can be plainly seen by citizens scouting the

Many parents, student and citizens of Tipton County have been anticipating what’s coming next after director of schools Tim Fite announced his retirement this year. In the wake of this statement made on Jan. 13, a recommendation has now been made for a successor. At the Tipton County Board of Education meeting on Thursday, March 10, Fite recommended that director BIBB of instruction Buddy Bibb take his place after his last day on June 30. “This applicant is qualified by all standards,” said Becky Shankle. “He provides stability to our school system. We’re fortunate to have this experienced candidate in our midst.” “Every time I visit other school systems, I come back renewed and relieved of our system’s capabilities,” said Covington High School principal Peggy Murdock. “I could not be more proud of this system built by Dr. Fite and Dr. Bibb.” On April 14, members of the community are invited to the board meeting for discussion and for their input. Bibb will open the meeting with a speech on future plans. Also, members of the planning teams involved with strategic planning in 2010 are invited to attend. A review committee will draft a report thereafter to be shared with the board members at the meeting on May 12 who will then cast their votes. “This is my 32nd year as an educator in the Tipton County school system,” said Bibb. “After 14 years at the board
