GOOD UNIVERSITY GUIDE 2019 UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR FOR STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Awarded Gold for outstanding teaching and learning 2017.

A global outlook Opportunities to travel and/or work in the UK and overseas are a real benefit of choosing Coventry Law School. You can expect unforgettable life experiences that can help you to stand out from the crowd of other graduates. Globally connected We live in an increasingly connected global community where the opportunity to work abroad and within different cultural settings is bigger than ever. To help you thrive, all of our law courses incorporate field trips, either in the UK or overseas, some course-based and some cross-faculty. As a student, you will have the opportunity to go on a field trip each year to allow you to put the theories you have learned into practice, to network with students from different cultures and to broaden your knowledge of global business. Some trips are free of charge, while others are subsidised. Field trips are generally accessible to all students but, if overseas, you will need to be able to acquire a visa. If this isn’t possible, then alternative trips will be available to you. Generally students will go on a field trip each year and they are either related to a module or offered to all undergraduate students within the school. Recent field strips included Geneva for a model UN, Chongqing in China and Stellenbosch in South Africa. Global Leaders Programme (GLP) This exciting, members-only programme develops industry leaders of the future. Expand your global skills in our specialist workshops, experience new cultures and different countries, and meet global leaders at networking events from the likes of Google, Microsoft and Facebook. This programme is optional and involves an additional fee. For further information please visit www.coventry.ac.uk/globalready

Placement/study abroad We know what a big difference work and/or international experience can make to your career prospects. Previous students have secured and successfully completed work placements with prestigious law firms helping them to stand out in the employment market. All our undergraduate courses give you the opportunity to undertake an optional additional year gaining experience on a work placement, in the UK or abroad, or studying overseas. Students do compete for placements but many are placed through our Employability Placement Unit and there is a lot of support to improve their chance of success. More details on placement support can be found in the Legal Futures section on page 6. If you are interested in studying abroad, the Law School has strong links with universities in Liege in Belgium, Strasbourg in France, Castellon and Leon in Spain, and Kiel and Rostock in Germany. If you don’t speak a foreign language, we also have links with universities in The Hague in the Netherlands, Orebro in Sweden, and Pecs in Hungary where courses are taught in English. OiL projects Online International Learning (OiL) projects are assignments that bring together students from Coventry Law School with peers at non-UK universities. Participating in OiL projects are an important part of your university experience and an essential step in becoming a global graduate, with excellent inter-cultural competence and digital fluency, both of which can improve your employability prospects. A recent Law School OiL project involved our Law Clinic students working with students at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. The students were given a real client’s case and then discussed the issues ‘face to face’ using the Faculty of Business and Law’s learning ‘robots’, which allow for real-time video conferencing. Working together, they then interviewed the client and helped to resolve their issue. To find out more about OiL projects, please visit the Coventry University website.

They help our students understand the skills sought by employers and provide guidance when they are making work placement, training contract, further study and graduate job applications. This may be on an individual basis or through talks in lectures, group workshops, or employer events. For further information about Legal Futures, please visit www.coventry.ac.uk/legalfutures

The best thing about learning Law is how you start to look at everyday life differently. You analyse everything with a legal mind and can see how the course is developing you as a legal professional. Hamza Sharif LLB (Hons) Law

Frequently asked questions

Course content

Does Coventry Law School prefer some A-level subjects over others?

Our LLB (Hons) courses contain modules designed to develop your academic, personal and career development skills as well as to give you practise in key legal skills such as advocacy, interviewing and negotiation. In your first year, you will develop a number of academic skills such as writing, researching, retrieving legal materials, and verbal communication. You will build your confidence through a series of legal exercises, and learn to present your work in groups. Later in your course you will be required to look at the development of a contemporary legal issue and demonstrate a number of skills resulting in a written piece of work, such as a legal diary. You will have the opportunity to practise your legal skills in realistic situations in our mock courtroom, and in regular competitions. Each year, a number of second and third year students are recruited to work in our legal clinic, gaining hands-on experience providing advice to members of the local community, supervised by trained solicitors and lawyers who are currently working in practice and are experts in specific areas of law. Academic support Our Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) is an innovative teaching and research centre that can help you to become a better academic writer. Through workshops and one-to-one sessions you can access the advice and guidance you need on topics such as essay writing, reports, dissertations and theses. This service is free to all students.

We accept most A-level subjects for entry on to our undergraduate law degrees. Do you require A-level Law? Our courses do not require any prior study of law. How will I know if a law degree is the right choice for me? Several books offer a useful introduction to the study of law at university. Try Understanding the Law by Geoffrey Rivlin (Oxford University Press), Learning the Law by Glanville Williams (Sweet & Maxwell) and/or Letters to a Law Student by Nicholas J McBride (Pearson Education). Is it true that law is a difficult subject? Studying law requires dedication and commitment but our courses do not require any prior knowledge of the subject and we will support you to maximise your potential. What careers do Coventry Law School graduates go on to? LLB graduates may pursue careers as solicitors by proceeding onto a Legal Practice Course or barristers by securing a place on the Bar Professional Training Course. However, every year several of our graduates choose other career routes such as management consultancy, accountancy and administration. Will you provide me with a professional placement with a barrister or solicitor? We encourage and support students in finding placement opportunities and encourage you to volunteer at one of our law clinics.
