UK City of Culture 2021 Coventry University is very much at the heart of the city’s rich history as well as it’s exciting future. The continually evolving cityscape has lots to offer, including a wide variety of places to eat, drink, shop and relax. UK City of Culture Coventry is UK City of Culture 2021. This accolade, awarded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, means the world will be watching our city in 2021. With Coventry University being a principal partner of the successful bid, there could be so many opportunities for students to get involved, making this a great time to study in Coventry. From ribbon weaving and watchmaking, to being the centre of the motor industry, our city has constantly re-invented itself. Coventry University is well placed to contribute to, and benefit from, the wider cultural developments within the city. We’re already a multicultural city, with the university welcoming students from more than 160 countries, but we can’t wait to see what being UK City of Culture 2021 will bring for us.

Cultural experiences Whatever you’re passionate about, Coventry has something for you. For music lovers, Coventry hosts the annual Godiva Festival, one of the UK’s biggest family music festivals, that’s seen the likes of Biffy Clyro, Kasabian, The Enemy, Jake Bugg and Example taking to the stage in War Memorial Park. There’s also a range of live music venues including the Golden Cross, the Kasbah and `The Tin’ Music and Arts. There are some impressive exhibition spaces too including the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum which is an award-winning venue for celebrating the city’s culture and history, and the best part is that it’s right next to the university in University Square, opposite the iconic Coventry Cathedral. If you’re interested in theatre, the Belgrade Theatre hosts an exciting mix of experiences ranging from locally-produced performances, comedy nights and touring West End shows. There are smaller venues too, like the Shop Front Theatre, a unique theatre space housed in a former fish and chip shop. As the birthplace of the British motor industry, Coventry is also home to the recently redeveloped Transport Museum, which currently houses the fastest car in the world and a 4D Land Speed Record simulator. In addition, the city is home to MotoFest Coventry, an annual motoring festival featuring motorsport demonstrations and live music. Sport Coventry was named European City of Sport 2019, with the vision of promoting and celebrating the benefits of sport and there’s plenty to offer sports fans. The Ricoh Arena, situated at the edge of the city, is a modern development which houses a 32,000-seat football and rugby stadium. It played host to London 2012 Olympic football matches and is home to the Wasps Rugby Club and Wasps Netball, which frequently offers volunteering opportunities to our students. Other sports teams within the city include Coventry Rugby Football Club, Coventry Bears rugby league club - and the Coventry Blaze ice hockey team, which is housed in the city’s Skydome complex, with which Coventry Business School has a particularly close relationship, with players studying with us, and our students frequently volunteering at games and other events.

Life-changing research We seek to deliver an expert-led education that is informed by world-class research, allowing our degrees to cover some of today’s most challenging issues and the solutions we are finding for them. Such an approach seeks to empower our graduates to become future healthcare professionals, with the knowledge informed by our research.

In April 2019, Coventry University hosted the Florence Network, a Europe-wide group of universities involved in nursing and midwifery education and research. The theme for the 2019 conference was “Future Forward: The future of Nursing and Midwifery in a changing health arena” and part of the conference was dedicated to the development of collaborative research.

High-quality, applied research lies at the heart of everything we do; we are committed to making a substantial contribution to some of today’s most challenging issues.

Research themes include:

Our mission is to understand and optimise the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities and society. We aim to achieve this through conducting innovative, rigorous, original and globally significant interdisciplinary research with children, adults, families and organisations across health and social care sectors. Our undergraduate teaching is heavily influenced by our research, with research-active academics currently teaching across the school on a regular basis. This means that you should have access to the most up-to-date thinking in the health disciplines. You may also have the chance to collaborate with staff on research projects. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) 94% of journal papers in Allied Health Professions were either 3* (internationally excellent) or 4* (world leading).

Clinical nutrition and dietetics Holistic and spiritual care for nutrition-related diseases Neurophysiological effects of manual and physiotherapy approaches Shoulder dysfunction in intensive treatment unit (ITU) survivors Compassion and nursing Improving midwifery care for pregnant women with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome Inclusive research with adults with intellectual disability Resilience and nursing students The decision-making process of mothers who are domestic violence survivors

Research in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health is not just about abstract concepts, it is about the discovery of new knowledge which makes a positive impact on people’s lives. An example of this is Dr Sally Pezaro’s research to improve diagnosis, care and awareness of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) among mothers and pregnant women. Dr Pezaro and colleagues Gemma Pearce and Emma Reinhold published the first openly accessible paper of its kind for this unique group of women; offering midwives, medical professionals and expectant mothers information needed for evidence-based maternity care. As a result, Dr Pezaro was awarded second place in the British Journal of Midwifery (BJM) Midwife of the Year 2019.

Researcher profile Deborah explores whole person approaches to obesity and other nutrition related conditions which includes physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of care. She is on the Education Board of the British Dietetic Association and the Scientific Committee of the European Institute for Religion, Spirituality and Health. Deborah has over 20 years’ clinical experience as a registered dietitian and has a PhD in behavioural medicine.

“Sometimes in providing specific clinical advice for one condition we fail to see the bigger picture of what this means for a person as a whole. My focus is currently exploring whole person approaches to obesity. I am looking at how we need to consider the psychological and spiritual issues that drive eating, rather than only addressing physical factors. As a society, I believe we need a more compassionate and non-judgemental approach towards obesity, viewing it as a chronic, relapsing, remitting condition. Our aim should be to reduce the harms associated with it.”

We are committed to making a substantial contribution to some of today’s most challenging issues through our applied research.

Global opportunities Opportunities to travel and/or work in the UK and overseas are a real benefit of choosing Coventry University. We aim to help you stand out from the crowd when you graduate by offering a range of overseas experiences throughout your degree. Field trips As a student, you will have the opportunity to go on a field trip each year to help broaden your subject knowledge, put the theories you have learnt into practice, network, and experience other cultures. Some trips are free of charge, while others are subsidised. International experiences can help you to understand how the knowledge and experiences you gain during your course are applied in a real-life setting, whilst also making invaluable connections that should help to bolster your employment prospects. Our students have been on field trips within the UK and all over the globe, with recent visits to Cape Town, Finland, Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Florida and Ireland.

Collaborative Online International Learning projects Collaborative Online International Learning is the term that we use at Coventry University to refer to `virtual mobility’ experiences. These are included within the curriculum and provide an opportunity to interact with international universities and industry professionals. You can use these experiences to develop your inter-cultural competences and digital skills, while working with others on subject-specific learning tasks or activities. Participating in such projects can be an important part of your university experience and a helpful step in becoming a global graduate, with excellent intercultural competence and digital fluency, both of which can improve your employability prospects. Recent projects have included psychology students collaborating with students from the University of Seville on a project called “Understanding work-life balance experiences through a real-life case study”. This virtually brought together students from the University of Seville and Coventry University in a virtual-arena and got them to discuss key issues in the organisational psychology field.

Children and Young People’s Nursing

Course information Children and Young People’s Nursing BSc (Hons) UCAS code: B730 www.coventry.ac.uk/ug/B730 Study option: 3 years full-time Overview It takes an exceptional person to nurse a child or young person – respect, sensitivity and empathy are key characteristics. Children have specific health needs and you need to understand how healthy children develop towards adulthood to minimise the impact of illness. Perhaps more so than any of the other nursing professions, communication is a critical factor when treating children. Adults can express their feelings and can identify the severity and nature of pain, whereas a child may not be able to communicate this in such detail, so you will need to interpret children’s behaviour and reactions. This course is designed to equip you with hands-on clinical and care skills to prepare you to practice compassionately and autonomously. By providing family-centred care and building therapeutic relationships, you will be encouraged to become a caring practitioner well prepared to meet the needs of children, young people and their families.
