Overview

As an operating department practitioner (ODP), you’ll work with surgeons, anaesthetists and theatre nurses to help ensure the safety and effectiveness of operations. ODPs have a critical role within the operating theatre team and are involved with the maintenance and restoration of the physical and mental health of the patient. This course aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge to work effectively as an ODP within a team of health and social care professionals. The role of the ODP is continually evolving beyond the borders of the operating department and ODPs are increasingly adapting their range of skills and abilities to develop their practice to work in non-traditional acute areas such as the emergency department, interventional radiology, MRI and CT scanning as well as endoscopy units.

You will have the opportunity to work alongside highly trained and professional staff within the NHS and the private sector, be taught by tutors with real-life experience, and take advantage of the facilities in the award winning Alison Gingell Building. This includes an operating theatre, a scrub room, hospital wards, critical care settings, community housing and other real-life environments relevant to practice.Successful completion of the course will make you eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a qualified ODP (additional costs may apply).
