Overview
It takes an exceptional person to nurse a child or young person – respect, sensitivity and empathy are key characteristics. Children have specific health needs and you need to understand how healthy children develop towards adulthood to minimise the impact of illness.
Perhaps more so than any of the other nursing professions, communication is a critical factor when treating children. Adults can express their feelings and can identify the severity and nature of pain, whereas a child may not be able to communicate this in such detail, so you will need to interpret children’s behaviour and reactions.
This course is designed to equip you with hands-on clinical and care skills to prepare you to practice compassionately and autonomously. By providing family-centred care and building therapeutic relationships, you will be encouraged to become a caring practitioner well prepared to meet the needs of children, young people and their families.
You will study in the award winning Alison Gingell Building which features hospital wards, an operating theatre, critical care settings, community housing and other real-life nursing environments. Placements offer the opportunity to put learning into practice in a real healthcare workplace.
Coventry University is ranked 4th in the UK for nursing and midwifery (Guardian University Guide 2020).
