Welcome Thanks for picking up a copy of our mini guide to Coventry University, which we hope will provide a taster of what makes us different. You can also look online for extra information about our courses and how we go about teaching and assessing them, along with the support we offer our students. If you want, you can order your own free copy of our full undergraduate prospectus. Simply add your details to the form on our website at www.coventry.ac.uk/prospectus and we’ll send you one in the post. We like to be different So what is it that makes us different? Like most universities, we’ve invested a lot of money in new buildings and improving our existing ones. The new Science and Health Building – built to replicate an entire patient journey – and the stunning Engineering and Computing Building are probably the most eye-catching. But we’re about more than just nice buildings. We take a lot of pride in the fact that our student experience reputation is based on a solid foundation of academic and welfare student support. Our aim is to help you feel settled at Coventry and to ensure you have as many opportunities as possible to achieve your goals. In this respect, a lot of what may seem like small things on their own, end up making a big difference. The support we offer From our Information Points across campus with friendly, trained staff who can deal with all types of student queries, to our specialist support areas covering learning, academic writing, IT and maths support, we go all out to make sure we do all we can to enhance your learning experience.

Our Health and Wellbeing team includes welfare officers, counsellors and mental health advisers who provide support for a range of issues, such as health or relationship worries, while our Disability Support Team provides guidance and assistance to disabled students from the point of application through to graduation. We also have a Spirituality and Faith Centre with a multi-faith meeting room, chapel and Muslim prayer rooms. Our unique location We’re right in the centre of the city and we’re right in the centre of the country. Both things make travelling in from other parts of the country easier, whether by train, car or coach. Being in the middle of the city gives easy access to shops, bars, theatres, sports venues and so on. In a nutshell, we are a modern university in an urban setting. And the vast majority of our accommodation (see pages 22-25) is very close by in the city itself. City of Culture Coventry will be the UK City of Culture 2021, a year-long event that is set to transform the arts and culture scene in the city. If you start your studies with us in 2019 you will be a Coventry student during the UK City of Culture year. Exciting times are ahead! We hope you find this mini guide gives you a good overview of the University and the city we’re based in. But that’s all it can do. To see us in real life, book on to an Open Day – the dates are on the inside front cover. Finally, we’d like to wish you all the best with your current studies. City living Shopping The campus is a five minute walk from a wide range of high street shops, including Primark, New Look, River Island, Topshop, JD Sports, Waterstones and Debenhams. Coventry is also home to one of the very few city-centre IKEA stores. Eating out City-centre foodie favourites include the Noodle Bar in Bull Yard, and Wagamama, Las Iguanas and Cosy Club in Broadgate. Wander further afield to Far Gosford Street to sample signature Turkish dishes at Sultan Restaurant or Middle Eastern cuisine at Habibi. Or, satisfy your sweet tooth at Creams Café on Swanswell Street. Music Music fans aren’t short of options in Coventry. There’s a lively local music scene in venues around the city, and big-name bands at the Empire on Far Gosford Street and the more commercial Kasbah, just outside the city centre. The Ricoh Arena, on the outskirts of the city, attracts headline acts and is also home to Premiership rugby club Wasps and Coventry City Football Club. The city also has a successful ice hockey team, Coventry Blaze. Arts and culture The Belgrade Theatre in central Coventry has a comprehensive programme of shows. There’s also the Art Deco Albany Theatre on Butts Road and Warwick Arts Centre, a short bus ride away at the University of Warwick. Movie-goers have the multiscreen Odeon, a cinema in TheHub and the Showcase cinema further out of town. All three offer discounted tickets for students. And we particularly like Fargo Village for a Camden Lock-style hub of art, music and food in Coventry’s creative quarter. Take a look at www.fargovillage.co.uk for more info.

Students' Union Coventry University Students’ Union (CUSU) is run by students, for students, to help you get the most from your university experience. Based in TheHub at the centre of campus, CUSU organises a year-round programme of events. With its own Course and Service Reps, our Union feeds students’ views on teaching and learning back to the University and its Student Warden scheme helps build positive relationships through an awareness of improving life for all in Coventry. As a student at Coventry you will also have the opportunity to get involved in activities through CUSU that can increase your employability skills, such as the volunteering service. Societies and sports clubs CUSU supports more than 130 student societies and over 55 sport clubs. Currently, societies include academic, cultural, international, faith, political and campaigning groups alongside a wide range of hobbies and interests. Joining a society is a great way to meet new people. As well as all the sports clubs you’d expect – football, hockey and rugby for example, you’ll find some more unusual ones too, such as wutan kung fu, mountaineering and snow sports. We want to make sport accessible, so there is a growing number of sport clubs where those with a disability can volunteer, train or compete. Visit the full list of societies and sports clubs at www.cusu.org.

Sport Coventry Sport Coventry is a collaboration between Coventry University and Coventry University Students’ Union designed to support, develop and promote success in all areas of university sport. We have over 55 sports clubs, many of which compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues and individual competitions. Don’t miss our annual varsity tournament where our teams compete against their local rivals from the University of Warwick. Team Phoenix Sport Coventry’s ‘Team Phoenix’ programme was established to enhance the sporting experience and performance of our flagship teams. Clubs have the opportunity to apply for extra resources and additional support, from professional expertise to funding. Sports Scholarship award If you play sport to a high level, you may also be interested in applying for our Sports Scholarship award. It provides both a cash bursary and tailored support to help you balance the demands of performance sport and life here at Coventry University. Sports facilities Our large, modern fitness suite contains a variety of cardiovascular and resistance machines, free weights equipment and a functional core area to help you stay fit and healthy. You can also take advantage of our indoor sports halls where you can participate in five-a-side football, basketball, badminton, table tennis and more. And if outside sports are more your thing, you’ll find several full-sized football, rugby and hockey pitches, an AstroTurf pitch and a cricket strip, just a short bus journey away at Westwood Heath. For more information, please visit www.coventry.ac.uk/sportscentre.

Equivalent qualifications Coventry University accepts a range of qualifications that enable students to progress onto undergraduate degree courses. If you are studying the International Baccalaureate, an Access to HE Diploma or any other qualifications, please contact us to discuss typical offers. There are a few ways you can get more information before making your application – you can check out courses on our website, or compare them on the UCAS and Unistats websites. Forums like The Student Room are also a good source of background information on student life.
If you haven’t already, why not visit us at an Open Day? You’ll have the chance to speak to students and lecturers, and see our fantastic facilities first hand – it’s the best way to get a feel for living and studying in Coventry.

Results
Congratulations – and welcome to Coventry University. There will be lots to do when you arrive, including enrolling and attending induction activities. During Freshers' week, you’ll also have the opportunity to make new friends and find out more about our Students' Union.
Hopefully you will have met the grades needed – check UCAS Track on results day to see whether you’ve been accepted onto the course. If you haven’t received the grades you were expecting, get in touch with us – we may have spaces available through Clearing.

Prepare
Once your heart is set on a course, you can apply through UCAS for full-time study, or directly to us for part-time study (or if you’re applying from outside the UK/EU). If you are applying through UCAS, make sure you submit your application before the 15 January 2019 deadline.
If you are invited to an interview, audition or portfolio review, then this will be communicated to you via email and will contain a booking link. Take a look at our online course pages for advice on what is required for the course you’ve applied for.

Once you have received your offers, it’s time to decide your 'Firm' and 'Insurance' universities. Now is a great time to visit us at an Applicant Visit Day. You can also join our Offer Holders' Facebook Group and meet others who have been made an offer to study here too.
Keep an eye on any updates to your application on your UCAS Track. You can sign in at any point after you’ve applied. You’ll be able to check if any of your university choices have offered you a place, as well as reply to your offers.

Personal statement top tips Here are some of our own tips for writing the perfect personal statement: 1. Sometimes getting started is the hardest part so try creating a mind map, record your ideas or a jot down a simple list. 2. T hen map out a structure for your statement – it’ll help to make sure you’ve covered everything: • Why this course? Relate your personal statement to course requirements to show you understand what is expected. • What makes you right for the course? What skills and experience can you bring? • What makes you different? Think about work experience, volunteering or societies you belong to. Admissions tutors want to see evidence of the person outside the classroom. • Tell us again. Sum up all of the above and show us you’re ready to embark on university life. 3. U se lots of examples to back up what you’re saying. Be honest. Universities want to see the real you. 4. A sk for help from parents, teachers and friends. They might be able to jog your memory on something you’ve not thought of. 5. P roof read and check your spelling. We can’t stress this one enough. First impressions count. Go through every section to pick up on typos you might have missed. T: 024 7765 2222 E: studentenquiries@coventry.ac.uk

Open days The best way to find out whether Coventry could be the right fit for you is to come and see us on campus at one of our Open Days. We hold full scale Open Days on Saturdays and smaller ‘drop-in’ style events on specific Wednesday afternoons – the 2018 Open Day dates (for entry in 2019) are listed to the right. Visit our website for other event dates. We also hold weekday student-led tours throughout the year, so there’s bound to be a visit option to suit your needs. To find out more or to book your place, head to the website at www.coventry.ac.uk/opendays.
