GOOD UNIVERSITY GUIDE 2019 UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR FOR STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Awarded Gold for outstanding teaching and learning 2017.

Learning through exploration The School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health takes an innovative approach to learning and teaching. By experiencing and exploring simulated scenarios you will gain a deeper understanding of the theory and practical application of knowledge, as well as an enjoyable and engaging learning experience. We use the latest technology, such as simulated patients which talk, display a variety of symptoms and react to your interventions, enabling you to develop your skills in a realistic environment before going on clinical placements. Alison Gingell Building Set across five floors, the multi-million pound Alison Gingell Building complements our existing health and life sciences facilities with a range of specialist and practical areas, social spaces, meeting and general teaching rooms. The building offers one of the UK’s best university learning environments by bringing together all the essential practical and simulation equipment required by aspiring leaders and the next generation of health and life sciences professionals. In January 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge officially opened the building and saw for themselves the innovative teaching and simulation activities. Students from the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health work alongside other health and life sciences students as part of our wider faculty mission to combine technology, science, health and wellbeing together, collaborating to create life changing ideas and expertise.

Many of our facilities, including the new Alison Gingell Building, are used by the local community. We are proud to work in partnership with local companies and organisations to develop joint initiatives that help us to be a university in the city, for the city. Ground floor – Features a mock ambulance, specialist laboratories for sport science, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, a running track for gait analysis and a sports therapy clinic. There are also dedicated research areas for physiology and sport science and an environmental chamber. 1st floor – Features a mock hospital operating theatre, hospital wards, midwifery suite, clinical skills rooms, consultation rooms, high dependency units and an orthotics laboratory. There are also two simulation community ‘houses’ that help students to practise home-based support and explore developments in assistive design and technology. 2nd floor – Features research laboratories for chemistry, molecular biology and microbiology, physiotherapy and sports therapy treatment practice rooms. 3rd floor – Features an analytical laboratory for forensic science, environment and geographical science. 4th floor – Features a flexible super laboratory capable of accommodating up to 270 students for teaching and research to develop biomedical and analytical sciences techniques.

Innovation We use high fidelity manikins that can be programmed to replicate many scenarios, ranging from critical illness through to childbirth. A manikin’s heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and breathing can be adjusted remotely for students to carry out relevant assessments and interventions. They also help us to learn how to administer medication, insert a breathing tube or treat cardiac and circulation symptoms. Megacode kid is an advanced infant patient simulator that helps students to monitor paediatric breathing and heart rates and practise defibrillation techniques as well as administer drugs. Students practise common paediatric lifesaving skills including inserting an intraosseous infusion into the bone marrow if a patient needs fluids which cannot be given intravenously. We have also adopted the pioneering MASK-ED learning approach from Australia to support students in developing clinical skills. Our specially trained staff wear high fidelity props to ‘become’ patients and teach their expertise through their adopted personas. One such character is Bernard who has dementia and provides the students with an insight into the complexities of his life whilst attending a cardiovascular assessment with his GP.

We use the latest technology to enable you to develop your skills in a realistic environment before going on clinical placements.

Our approach We share a passion for equipping the healthcare sector with professionals dedicated to delivering the best possible care for patients. Our staff are committed to providing you with a learning environment that supports you on a journey of life-changing learning and exploration. We use people and technology to replicate real-life situations allowing you to problem solve and build self-confidence as a healthcare practitioner.

The combination of our values-driven approach with the use of the latest simulation techniques to develop your hands-on skills provides an environment in which you will be not only clinically excellent, but also have the care and compassion required to provide the best in patient care. We expect our graduates to embody these values and take them out into their careers as outstanding healthcare professionals.

Our fully-equipped ambulance, scrub area, hospital wards and adapted community houses feature assistive technology, allowing you to practise the full patient pathway; from paramedic assessment, to hospital treatment through to rehabilitation.

In addition to making an impact on the health and lives of people across the globe we are also conscious of the impact of our activities on the environment. We are proud that in the 2017 People and Planet University League, which ranks universities on their environmental and ethical performance, Coventry University was in the highest 'First Class' category.

We work in partnership with professional bodies, employers and the health and social care sector. Our accredited courses have been reviewed and tested by the approved professional bodies to ensure they reach a set standard that employers expect. We know that working in the healthcare sector has its challenges and can be both physically and emotionally demanding, but we also know that it is incredibly rewarding and that our graduates gain satisfaction from making a difference to the individuals they care for, their families and the wider community across the world. Patients often access healthcare at a low point in their lives and the respect, professionalism and kindness shown to them by healthcare professionals can be an important part of their recovery.

6

In order to deliver effective healthcare it is important for professionals to take care of themselves as well as their patients. We will teach you skills and strategies to be conscious of your own wellbeing which will contribute to a greater awareness of managing your own physical and mental health.

Our focus is on approaching health and wellness in a holistic way, providing care and compassion in meeting global healthcare needs.

Researcher profile Deborah explores whole person approaches to obesity and other nutrition related conditions which includes physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of care. She is on the Education Board of the British Dietetic Association and the Scientific Committee of the European Institute for Religion, Spirituality and Health. Deborah has over 20 years’ clinical experience as a registered dietitian and has a PhD in Behavioural Medicine. Deborah explains:

Dr. Deborah Lycett Reader in Nutrition, Dietetics and Spiritual Health

14

“Sometimes in providing specific clinical advice for one condition we fail to see the bigger picture of what this means for a person as a whole. My focus is currently exploring whole person approaches to obesity. I am looking at how we need to consider the psychological and spiritual issues that drive eating, rather than only addressing physical factors. As a society I believe we need a more compassionate and non-judgemental approach towards obesity, viewing it as a chronic, relapsing, remitting condition. Our aim should be to reduce the harms associated with it.”

We are committed to making a substantial contribution to some of today’s most challenging issues through our applied research.

Perhaps more so than any of the other nursing professions, communication is a critical factor when treating children. Adults can express their feelings and can identify the severity and nature of pain, whereas a child may not be able to communicate this in such detail, so you will need to interpret children's behaviour and reactions.
