Welcome The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering aims to provide excellent teaching coupled with an outstanding student experience. This approach has shaped the culture of our forward-thinking Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing, with its inspirational ÂŁ50m building housing modern equipment and student facilities. We aim to prepare and guide our students towards their first professional position and future careers. Our strong tradition of business-focused research is reflected in the important relationships we have developed with companies such as Emirates, Jaguar Land Rover, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Unipart and Birmingham International Airport. Working closely with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Institute of Engineering Technology, the school is proud to be delivering professionally relevant, up-to-date courses, the majority of which are accredited. Global Leaders Programme (GLP) This exciting, members-only programme aims to develop industry leaders of the future. Expand your global skills in our specialist workshops, experience new cultures and different countries, and take advantage of opportunities to meet global leaders, which have in the past included networking events with the likes of Google, Microsoft and Facebook. This programme is optional and involves an additional fee.

Placement/study abroad year Many of our school’s courses offer the opportunity to undertake an optional additional year gaining experience on a work placement, in the UK or abroad, or studying overseas. Our dedicated employability and placement team, is here to support you during the process of applying for a place. In the past, students have been placed in Damen Shipyards in the Netherlands, CERN in Switzerland, Bertrandt in Germany, HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, Colombo Airport in Sri Lanka, and AirBaltic in Riga. Online International Learning projects Online International Learning is the term that we use at Coventry University to refer to ‘virtual mobility’ experiences. These are included within the curriculum and provide an opportunity to interact with international universities and industry professionals. You can use these experiences to develop your intercultural competences and digital skills, while working with others on subject-specific learning tasks or activities. Employability and work placement support Our responsibility extends beyond the classroom and we have invested heavily in assisting our students to progress to successful careers in the mechanical, aerospace and automotive engineering sectors. In the school, the student experience extends beyond our teaching, with a number of dedicated student societies you can join, such as the Automotive Society, the Mechanical Engineering Society, the Aviation Society, and the Aerospace Society. We’re proud of our teaching achievements, which saw us awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017, the Government’s first major assessment of teaching quality in universities, and also saw us awarded 5 stars for both our teaching and our facilities (QS Stars 2020). The Guardian University Guide 2020 has ranked Coventry University 3rd in the UK for ‘Mechanical engineering’.

Research-informed teaching At the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering, we seek to deliver an education that is informed by research, allowing our degrees to cover some of today’s most challenging issues and the solutions we are finding for them. This approach seeks to empower our graduates to become future global engineering and management professionals. Our research expertise ranges from metrology, kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS) and multi-phase fluid flow systems for oil and gas extraction to human factors in aviation. Our Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) brings together academia, industry and research and development in a ‘live’ manufacturing environment.

Facilities The High Performance Engineering Centre, sited within our £50m faculty building, houses an impressive range of industry standard equipment. Facilities for students studying our Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering courses include:

Coventry University is also home to the UK’s first ‘Faculty on the Factory Floor’, the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME). This is a collaboration between Coventry University and Unipart Manufacturing Group, providing students with training in the Unipart best practice manufacturing methodology and seeking to offer the opportunity to work with engineering professionals.

Our annual summer research internship programme aims to provide further opportunities for shortlisted students to work closely with researchers on existing and new research projects. The programme supports students in gaining invaluable experience in a research environment while getting paid. Please note that this programme may be subject to an application process and spaces may be limited. Learning support The university’s Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) is an innovative teaching and research centre that aims to help you to become a better academic writer. Through workshops and one-to-one sessions, you can access the advice and guidance you need on topics such as essay writing, reports, dissertations and theses. This service is free to all students. The university’s Mathematics and Statistics Support Centre, sigma, is available to all students, and aims to provide free support to improve your maths and statistics. The centre runs a drop-in service, as well as hosting online resources, workshops and one-to-one sessions. If you need any additional academic support with your course during your studies, you can visit the Theta Centre for a drop-in session on the ground floor of the faculty’s Engineering, Environment and Computing Building.

Offering a range of exciting careers, there is a growing demand for aerospace engineers with a systems focus who are able to embrace the multidisciplinary aspects of problem solving to help design the next generation of aircraft and aerospace systems. The Aerospace Technology BEng (Hons) course aims to develop a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of aerospace engineering and management. Primarily based upon mechanical systems for aerospace vehicles, you will also have the opportunity to gain a good knowledge of aerospace project management. The course takes a more practical approach to aerospace engineering with a greater emphasis on implementation issues. Aerospace Systems Engineering MEng/BEng (Hons) is centred upon systems for aerospace vehicles and the requirement to design total system solutions. The course takes a more theoretical approach to aerospace engineering with a greater emphasis on design and analysis. In the MEng year, the emphasis is on the integration of mechanical and electrical systems into an aircraft airframe. Taught by staff with a wealth of industry experience, you will have the opportunity to work with industry-standard software and have access to our High-Performance Engineering Centre, which includes flight simulation systems, a vertical take-off Harrier Jet, a 1/5th scale wind tunnel and a suite of CNC machining cells.

The course aims to prepare you for a wide range of career options within the aviation industry either in the UK or overseas – from airline and airport management to air transport consultancy, roles with industry suppliers and manufacturers or in international logistics. Main study themes are airport operations and air transportation, airline strategy, finance and economics, aviation safety, security and emergency planning, transport and logistics management. Study option: 1 year full-time Overview Successful completion of this course enables you to `top-up’ your existing qualification - an undergraduate diploma or equivalent in engineering or related fields - to the internationally-recognised `Honours’ degree. It is designed for UK, international and European students seeking management roles in technology-based business. Building on your existing engineering skills, this final-year course will present the key aspects of managing a company in an engineering -based organisation and offer the latest in business management theory, e.g. strategic management, supply chain and logistics, quality management, project management and environmental management. As a student member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), you will have access to the institute’s knowledge centre, which features traditional library and online facilities, as well as career support and access to the student hub. Your studies will take place between our £50m Engineering, Environment and Computing Building and the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME), based at Unipart’s Coventry site. This ‘Faculty on the Factory Floor’ allows you to experience technology on the manufacturing frontline, including robotic automation, forming, joining, analysis and simulation, metrology and product verification technology. Taught modules are applied immediately in a real factory setting and complimented by continual live experiences of how things are manufactured in real time.

Our partnership with the Unipart Manufacturing Group ensures this course is highly vocational in nature, designed to produce ‘industry-ready’ graduates, who are well prepared for their first role in industry.

The Guardian University Guide 2020 has ranked Coventry University 3rd in the UK for mechanical engineering. We aim to produce graduates with the versatility and depth of understanding to deal with new and unusual challenges in mechanical engineering, alongside the necessary imagination and creativity to innovate. We provide opportunities to participate in a number of field trips, which in the past has included: Warsaw University of Technology in Poland; test work at the GM proving ground; a tour of the Ford F150 factory in Detroit, USA; a tour of Hirata, a Japanese Tier 1 automotive supplier for Ford, Chrysler and GM; participation on a certificated training course with Altair on Inspire; and visits to Mahle Powertrain, the University of Michigan and Chrysler Building.

The MEng route fully meets the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a chartered engineer (CEng) and the BEng route enables membership and registration as an associate member (AMIMechE) of the IMechE.

This course responds to the demand for motorsport engineers with strong analytical and problem-solving skills (MIA 2019) to ensure the industry remains at the cutting edge of innovation. The course offers you the chance to specialise in performance engineering, covering design for performance, construction and operation of competition vehicles, alongside related aspects of materials science, aerodynamics, structural analysis and vehicle systems. We also aim to provide you with a sound understanding of the commercial context of motorsport engineering, together with the commercial and technical risks associated with innovation. Teaching is highly practical, focused on providing a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of motorsport engineering and, more importantly, how this knowledge is applied in the industry. You will have the opportunity to work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice. Career options may include becoming a race mechanic or race engineer, roles as a manufacturing engineer, composites laminator, design engineer, dimensional management engineer or operations manager in motorsport engineering or related industries.
