GOOD UNIVERSITY GUIDE 2019 UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR FOR STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Awarded Gold for outstanding teaching and learning 2017.

A global outlook Opportunities to travel and/or work in the UK and overseas are a real benefit of choosing Coventry Business School. You can expect unforgettable life experiences, and start to stand out from the crowd of other graduates. Globally connected We live in an increasingly connected global community where the opportunity to work abroad and within different cultural settings is bigger than ever. To help you thrive, all of our Business School courses incorporate field trips, either in the UK or overseas, some course-based and some cross-faculty. As a student, you will have the opportunity to go on a field trip each year to allow you to put the theories you have learnt into practice, to network with students from different cultures and to broaden your knowledge of global business. Some trips are free of charge, while others are subsidised. Field trips are generally accessible to all students but, if overseas, you will need to be able to acquire a visa. If this is not possible, then alternative trips will be available to you. Our students have been on field trips within the UK and all over the globe, to places such as Cape Town, Doha, Prague, Miami and Cuba. Global Leaders Programme (GLP) This exciting, members-only programme aims to develop industry leaders of the future. Expand your global skills in our specialist workshops, experience new cultures and different countries, and meet global leaders at networking events from the likes of Google, Microsoft and Facebook. This programme is optional and involves an additional fee.

Placement/study abroad We know what a big difference work and/or international experience can make to your career prospects. Previous students have secured and successfully completed work placements with prestigious companies, such as Grant Thornton and Volvo, which can help them stand out in the employment market. All our undergraduate courses give you the opportunity to undertake an optional additional year gaining experience on a work placement, in the UK or abroad, or studying overseas. Students do compete for placements but many are placed through our Employability Placement Unit and there is a lot of support to improve their chance of success. OiL Projects Online International Learning (OiL) projects are assignments that bring together students from Coventry University with peers at non-UK universities. Participating in OiL projects are an important part of your university experience and an essential step in becoming global graduates, with excellent intercultural competencies and digital fluency, both of which can improve your employability prospects. Within the school, staff developed and led a total of 15 OiL projects in the last academic year, working with a variety of international partners including universities in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. A recent OiL project partnered with Swedish logistics firm DFDS Logistics, and helped broaden students’ experience of an international business by allowing them to present ideas directly to professionals in the organisation.

In year 1, you will focus on developing core subject knowledge and skills through investigating the founding principles, constructs, theories and professional practice essential to your chosen course. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop vital and transferable employability skills. In year 2, you have the opportunity to deepen and broaden your core subject knowledge and skills at an intermediate level. Moreover, you can begin to engage with specialisms within your subject. There will be opportunities to further enhance your transferable and employability skills through, for instance, engaging with the school’s Employability Personal Tutors (EPT) to help you apply for industrial placement opportunities. You are encouraged to develop your employability skills by taking an optional placement/or study abroad year. This will allow you to apply what you have learnt in years 1 and 2 and add invaluable experience to your CV. In your final year, you will undertake advanced level study within your course which aims to enable you to transition into graduatelevel employment or further academic and professional study. In most cases, you will have the opportunity to write an extended piece of work such as a dissertation or project. Furthermore, you will have opportunities that will allow you to continue to develop academic and professional skills to enhance your graduate employability. Most of our courses allow students to take an Add+vantage module at each stage. These modules are part of our employability programme and include a range of work experience and career development activities. For further information, please visit www.coventry.ac.uk/addvantage

Course information Business Administration BA (Hons) UCAS code: N250 www.coventry.ac.uk/ug/N250 Business Management BA (Hons) UCAS code: N221 www.coventry.ac.uk/ug/N221 Enterprise and Entrepreneurship BA (Hons) UCAS code: NN1F www.coventry.ac.uk/ug/NN1F 3 years full-time or 4 years sandwich (study abroad/work placement) Overview Coventry University has a track record for business education that spans more than 50 years, with successful graduates entering a wide range of professions. Over the years, our courses have evolved to meet the needs of a changing world, so that our students can gain the knowledge and skills needed to thrive. By choosing us, you’ll join one of the largest business schools in Europe. Business, as a subject, looks at an entire market sector or all economic sectors collectively. It also examines how to make, create and manage an effective business. To study business, you’ll need an aptitude for leadership, management and organisation. You’ll be a problem-solver, will manage risks well and will practise how to make effective decisions and develop strategies for success.

Business Administration BA (Hons) The course reflects business thought and practice with an emphasis, where appropriate, on the application of theory to real business situations, challenges and issues. Our aim is to provide you with a business degree that equips you for careers in local, national or international markets. Case studies will be used to give you an in-depth understanding of how the different parts of an organisation support one another. Previously, for example, students have considered the project management issues involved in managing mega events, such as the Olympic Games. Business Management BA (Hons) Do you see yourself as a future business leader? Are you keen to understand how businesses solve problems, tackle risk, make effective decisions and develop strategies for corporate success? The degree, which benefits from EPAS accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), will provide a solid grounding in business management theory, skills, tools and techniques – from economics and accounting to marketing, e-commerce and human resources. The course offers three specialist pathways in supply chain management, leadership or global practice, which all include modules accredited by the Association for Project Management (APM) and Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS). Enterprise and Entrepreneurship BA (Hons) The BA Enterprise and Entrepreneurship is an innovative course, aimed at students with a keen interest in creating their own entrepreneurial venture or project alongside academic study. Projects might include business or social enterprise start-ups, growing a family or established business, or driving a new initiative within private or public sector employment. With creativity and innovation at its heart, this is a course for budding entrepreneurs who want to start, develop or grow a business and strengthen their skills alongside their degree. Possible careers for graduates Business degree graduates have the opportunity to equip themselves with the skills, competencies and knowledge to thrive in industry. Graduates should have an excellent foundation for careers across a variety of roles, from management and HR to advertising and marketing. Recent graduates have gone on to roles within a range of organisations including Ark Housing Consultancy in London, Smart Assessor in Rugby, Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership in London and Fastenal in Coventry. Accreditations and memberships We are accredited by, or hold memberships with, the following professional bodies. Not all accreditations or memberships relate to all of the above courses.
