Research inspired Our postgraduate teaching is heavily influenced by our research, with research-active academics teaching across the Faculty on a regular basis. As well as undertaking your own research, you may also have the chance to collaborate with staff on research projects and disseminate your research findings at faculty, national and occasionally international research conferences.
Professional development We deliver an extensive portfolio of continuing professional development, postgraduate and post-qualifying courses and undertake consultancy. The School has developed innovative and inspiring ways of engaging with service users and carers to give them a voice. This includes encouraging patients to take photographs of their daily lives that are turned into films and screened to students; inviting them into classrooms to talk directly to learners and also involving them in recruitment, curriculum development and student assessment. Our specialist employment and placement advisors will help you find professional placements and internships, if relevant, that can enhance your leadership capabilities, including taking part in our Global Leaders programme. Well-rounded skills Coventry University works in partnership with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to offer additional modules on some of our CPD courses. These modules use a variety of techniques to give you the practical leadership skills to critically evaluate and develop solutions to complex, inter-related, multi-faceted issues that you will experience in organisations. Each postgraduate course has an individually tailored version of the CMI Professional Development module. All students will become Affiliate Members of CMI during their period of study.

Facilities Set across five floors, the Alison Gingell Building complements our existing health and life sciences facilities with a range of specialist and practical areas, social spaces, meeting and general teaching rooms. The building offers one of the UK’s best university learning environments by bringing together all the essential practical and simulation equipment required by current and aspiring health and social care leaders. In January 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge officially opened the building and saw for themselves the innovative teaching and simulation activities. Students from the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health work alongside other Health and Life Sciences students as part of our wider faculty mission to combine technology, science, health and well-being together, collaborating to create life-changing ideas and expertise. Many of our facilities, including the new Alison Gingell Building, are used by the local community. We are proud to work in partnership with local companies and organisations to develop joint initiatives that help us to be a university in the city, for the city.
Ground floor Features an ambulance room, specialist laboratories for sport science, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, a running track for gait analysis and a sports therapy clinic. There are also dedicated research areas for an environmental chamber, physiology and sport science. First floor Features a mock hospital operating theatre, hospital wards, midwifery suite, clinical skills rooms, consultation rooms, high dependency unit and orthotics laboratory. There are also two simulation community ‘houses’ that help students to practise home-based support and explore developments in assistive design and technology. Second floor Features research laboratories for chemistry, molecular biology and microbiology, physiotherapy and sports therapy treatment practice rooms. Third floor Features an analytical laboratory for forensic science, environment and geographical science. Fourth floor Features a flexible super laboratory capable of accommodating up to 270 students for teaching and research to develop biomedical and analytical sciences techniques.

High-quality, applied research lies at the heart of everything we do; we are committed to making a substantial contribution to some of today’s most challenging issues through our dedicated Research Centres. Centre for Advances in Behavioural Science (CABS) The mission of CABS is to advance theory and practice through behavioural science research to address real-world problems. CABS works with individuals and communities to understand societal needs and develop solutions that impact lives and help to build healthy and resilient communities. This is achieved through conducting interdisciplinary behavioural science research that is innovative, rigorous, original and globally significant.
Centre for Innovative Research Across the Life Course (CIRAL) Our research is multidisciplinary which impacts on policy, clinical and social care decision making and practice, and individual and community health and well-being, tackling the grand challenges society faces today and in the future. A core approach to health and well-being promotion lies in our beliefs - to improve the lives, health and well-being of young children, adults and their families. Our mission is to understand and optimise the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities and society through conducting innovative, rigorous, and original and globally significant, interdisciplinary research with children, adults, families, and organisations across health and social care sectors. Centre for Sport, Exercise and Life Sciences (CSELS) Research within the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Life Sciences (CSELS) reflects a broad strength of sport, exercise and biological associated sciences to understand life from the level of molecules through to the whole body. The Centre has considerable expertise, ranging from expertise in cell biology, genomic and molecular biology, biochemistry, nutrition and food science, safety pharmacology, physiology, physical activity and sport performance. Centre for Global Learning Education and Attainment (GLEA) Dr Stephen Cowden and Dr Gurnam Singh are two Social Work academics who are Research Associates with GLEA on the basis of their research on Critical Pedagogy and inequalities in Education. This focus on the ethical basis of teaching and learning is an important part of the work of this Research Centre and links very much to the participatory teaching approach on the MA Social Work.
Researcher profile Alastair Gray is course director for the Advanced Clinical Practice MSc course and senior lecturer in advancing practice. He is passionate about advancing nursing practice, having been associated with this across the West Midlands for the past 17 years. A registered nurse since 1982, his clinical experience has been in emergency and trauma care in Leicester and Coventry hospitals. During his time in clinical practice, he witnessed the power of effective nursing on patient well-being and on the delivery of collaborative, efficient and responsive services.

Overview This course brings together the science of nutrition and the innovation of business to expand your horizons beyond the more traditional approaches to public health nutrition. The increase in non-communicable diseases across the globe, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and malnutrition is inextricably linked to poor diet. This has led to an increasing demand for graduates who have an in-depth knowledge of the impact of dietary intake on the risk factors of disease, as well as the ability to apply this knowledge through education and influencing policy to improve the population’s health.
