NEWSLETTER Friday 14th June

Dear parents and carers, We are so proud of our Year 11 students and today we have had a wonderful morning with them in our celebration leavers’ assembly. This very heartfelt and fun event celebrated our students’ five years with us so far and gave us the opportunity to reflect on the students’ successes across their whole stretch of time with us. We also said a formal well done to the year group for their enormous effort with their GCSEs. With so many of the year group returning to us for their sixth form we were relieved that this wasn’t a final goodbye for too many but will truly miss those who are moving to new experiences in September. Our Year 11s have been excellent role models for our Year 10s and we’ve been very pleased to see the Year 10s take on the mantle by working hard in lessons, engaging in their mock exam preparation and revisiting work studied across the last two years. These mock exams give students a clear indication of which areas of the curriculum they will need to target over the coming months to bridge any gaps and are a key part of our exam programme. Keep it up Year 10 – we are here to support you. Good luck also to students in Year 12 who are also sitting mocks. We continue to make visits to the primary schools to meet our new intake and we are picking up on the Year 6 students’ evident excitement at starting at secondary school and joining us at Cowes Enterprise College. They look forward to our transition days and evening and also our family welcome breakfast on their first day in September. This cohort will be the first to receive our new Maritime Futures curriculum in Year 7, which will enable students to learn certain aspects of their curriculum through a maritime thread which has a significant focus on careers. This week we have held our first Maritime Review Panel as part of our preparation for this new curriculum and national leaders from a number of maritime related fields joined us for the day to assist our planning. The day was very successful and our visitors were very complimentary about what we are putting in place and have offered their national contacts list to support our career work at a high level next year. I continue to enjoy my parent surgeries as meeting parents and hearing your thoughts is key for me. This term my parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley Click the arrows or swipe to turn pages .

3G PITCH UPDATE & FOOTWEAR REMINDER Our contractors have been working between exams to progress with our 3G pitch and it is looking amazing. We are so excited to see this progress!

A reminder that full-size images and previous progress updates can be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Use of the 3G pitch will require specific footwear. Only studded football boots (screw -in or moulded) should be worn on the pitch. It is important that the studs must be fitted correctly to the shoe sole and in a way that they cannot capture the turf fibres. All studs must be fully tightened and there must be no gap between the studs and the sole of the boot. All studs must be free of sharp edges, have a smooth and undamaged surface and totally free of sharp burrs. Flat soled trainers or ‘astro trainers’ should not be worn on the 3G pitch.

Our Sports Day this year will be held on Tuesday 25th June! Parents and carers are more than welcome to join us from 12.20pm for the Track Events. All competitors should come to school in their PE kit, which must be their full PE kit (Only CEC PE hoodies are allowed in the building, an alternative black hoodie can be worn outside).

Cowes Sixth Form university summer school success continues. Congratulations to Emilia Shannon and Amie Jupe who have gained places at the University of Bristol Medicine Summer School. Bristol University offers only 20 medicine places per year and we are over the moon to have two of our talented year 12 students successful in the process with the support of our sixth form team. Emilia explains the process: “We had to send off a

personal statement outlining why we would be suitable medicine students, including our predicted grades and extra-curricular activities. After much waiting we finally heard back from Bristol that we had both been offered places at the medicine summer school. I can’t wait to experience what life will be like as a university medical student!” Emilia and Amie will be joining eighteen other year 12 students from across the country at Bristol University School of Medicine in July.

UPDATING PERSONAL INFORMATION We would like to ensure that all information we hold on both students and parents/carers is up to date. If you move house or have any change of circumstance please ensure you notify the college and let us know? You can call direct on 203103 or email info@cowesec.org. FLOATING BRIDGE SHUTTLE BUS

UPDATE The number of students using our shuttle bus service has reduced significantly during the academic year to the point where it is now no longer financially viable to run. Due to the increased running costs and the falling number of student using the service, we have decided that from the 19th of July 2019 we will no longer offer this facility to our students.

We apologise for any issues this may cause and hope that the additional time will allow you to make suitable arrangements for September 2019. Thank you in advance for your understanding and continued support.
