NEWSLETTER Friday 28th June
Dear parents and carers, Our Year 10 mock exams continue and we are very proud of the majority of students who have approached them with such determination and resilience. Year 9 exams start next week and we expect our students to revise in preparation, using the revision strategies shared in a recent assembly to support this process. Our Year 13s had their leavers’ ball last Friday and we hope this gave our sixth formers a fabulous send off. We aim to do the same with our brilliant Year 11s this evening at their prom at Northwood House. We are delighted that we this is not a goodbye for the vast majority of the year group, who re-join us again in September. This Monday we hold our Sixth Form Induction Day, which gives students the opportunity to find out more about sixth form courses, meet each other and team build, and start to put their bespoke charters together. Our sixth form charter provides a set of guaranteed experiences appropriate to sixth form life and university preparation, and ranges from Duke of Edinburgh and Young Enterprise, through to volunteering and timetabled weekly work experience opportunities. It also includes regular and deep career and university support experiences such as our Oxbridge and Medicine programmes. Congratulations to all our students for their contributions to Sports Day which is always a real highlight of the summer term. We managed to have an afternoon of sunshine in spite of the yellow weather warnings and the ice cream van was still busy! This afternoon really represented our ethos of team spirit and inclusivity. I continue to enjoy my parent surgeries as meeting parents and hearing your thoughts is key for me. This term my parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley Click the arrows or swipe to turn pages .
TRANSITION Thank you to all of the parents and carers who came to the academy’s pretransition evening on Thursday. It was great to be able to welcome so many families into our community here at Cowes and the whole team is raring to go to welcome you all for our Transition Days which are 11th and 12th July this year.
THIS WEEK’S ATTENDANCE WAS 94.4%
A reminder that we have some very useful information regarding some on the most popular social media platforms that our students are using. These can be found on our website or via this link: https://www.cowesec.org/our-academy/ letters-and-communication
Thank you to all parents and carers for your full support in ensuring your child attends the academy for every session possible. A reminder that parents should telephone the academy on 01983 203103 and select Option 1 before 8.30am on each day of absence, informing of the reason of absence and when their child will be returning to the academy, leaving a message on the voicemail. Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence. Parents are required to send a letter of explanation of absence when their child returns to school. This should be handed into reception. This letter should detail the duration and reason for absence.
You can also find information on keeping children safe while online gaming, top tips for managing screen time and online safety tips for parents of teenagers. If any parents or carers would like any support with safeguarding concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Academy reception who will put you in contact with the Safeguarding team.
3G PITCH UPDATE We would like to thank Charlie Shilson-Marsek in Year 9 for this stunning drone image of our site! A huge well done to Charlie for capturing such a great picture.
A reminder that previous progress updates can be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Use of the 3G pitch will require specific footwear. Only studded football boots (screw-in or moulded) should be worn on the pitch. It is important that the studs must be fitted correctly to the shoe sole and in a way that they cannot capture the turf fibres. All studs must be fully tightened and there must be no gap between the studs and the sole of the boot. All studs must be free of sharp edges, have a smooth and undamaged surface and totally free of sharp burrs. Flat soled trainers or ‘astro trainers’ should not be worn on the 3G pitch.
WATER BOTTLES
Please could we remind students, parents and carers of the importance of bringing a water bottle each day to the academy. Water bottles can be filled from one of the many water dispensers around the academy during break or lunch times. A hydrated brain is a happy brain! Thank you for your support.
SPORTS DAY 2019 This Tuesday saw the annual holding of CEC’s Sports Day. Students competed in the throwing, jumping and middle distance running events in the morning, with the rest of the school joining the athletes on the field for the rest of the track events in the afternoon. We saw many brilliant individual and team efforts in each event and expect to see some new school records! A big thank you to all of the students who participated, our Sixth Form Sports Captains and to the academy staff for their assistance in the smooth running of the day.
SIXTH FORM NEWS YEAR 13 BALL Sixth form staff were proud to celebrate the immense achievements of our year 13 students at the Sixth Form Ball. All were treated to vintage disco tunes from our very own DJ Mr. Wiltshire. Despite his record collection seeming to have stopped at 1999, all thoroughly enjoyed themselves with a special highlight being the collective singalong to Toto's Africa. The student leadership team presented prizes and awards as fond souvenirs marking the fabulous journey our most senior students have enjoyed at Cowes Sixth Form. All year 13 now wait in anticipation for A level results day on 15th August when the next chapter of their bright future begins.
REMINDERS & INFORMATION CAR PARK SAFETY Drop off and collections should be made on Crossfield Avenue remembering that that no parking is permitted on the white ZigZag lines surrounding the pedestrian crossing outside the Academy. Please do not use the Academy car park to drop off and collect students without prior agreement from the Academy for you to do so. Please could we also remind parents that the disabled bay spaces are for holders of valid Blue Badges only.
Please click here for a letter regarding early leaving arrangements on the last day of term (Friday 19th July). UPDATING PERSONAL INFORMATION We would like to ensure that all information we hold on both students and parents/ carers is up to date.
