Friday 5th April

Dear parents and carers, We have had a great week to finish the term, with lots going on and celebration end of term crew assemblies at the heart of our final week. Thank you to the Air Ambulance for supporting our Health and Social Care courses at the academy; students really relished the experience. Well done also to all students who are working hard as they move towards their exams. We are very proud of our Year 13s and Year 11s and know you can do it. You may well have seen the positive press we have been receiving regarding our maritime curriculum announcement. We are delighted to see that the story is proving interesting at both national and international level and has been reported as a model of excellent practice in the Times Educational Supplement, or TES, this week. Over the holidays, Year 11 students have revision plan to support their revision at home. There are also many interventions and revision sessions for both Year 11 and 13s in the academy across the break; please do make sure your child grabs these opportunities and is working with focus and determination. So much progress can be made by students at this point in the year. This term has been a very positive, rich and busy one for us all and such events as we’ve had over the last few weeks are great reminders of all that has been achieved by the students, through their hard work and commitment and with our great teaching and the support and dedication of their families. The summer term starts on Tuesday 23rd April at normal school time. My parent surgeries continue next term on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. I should like to wish you all a happy holiday. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

SAFEGUARDING

ATTENDANCE

We have been alerted to a new app which can help you in keeping your child safe when they are not under your supervision – Holly Guard. Below is an explanation of the app from the app store: Hollie Guard turns your smartphone into a personal safety device. In danger? Shake your phone or tap the screen to generate an alert. Your location and audio/video evidence will automatically be sent to your emergency contacts who can take action to help you quickly. Three alert types - Personal, Stealth, and Deterrent - allow you to choose an alert setting appropriate to your specific needs.

Meeting someone? The Meeting Timer gives you extra protection when you are going to a dangerous meeting or are meeting someone new. Simply enter descriptive information and the duration of the meeting. When the meeting time has expired an alert will automatically be raised. Traveling? The Journey feature allows you to notify your friends, family, and co-workers of your movements while traveling. Enter your start and end point, and an SMS & email will be sent to your emergency contacts when you’ve started and safely completed your journey. To register for an www.hollieguard.org

Hollie Guard was developed by the Hollie Gazzard Trust (HGT) to help people stay safe. HGT supports young hairdressers and charities fighting domestic abuse and anti-knife crime. The app was created in honour of Hollie Gazzard. For more information about the Trust please visit our website www.holliegazzard.org.

#AttendanceMatters.

Thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support with your child’s attendance the Academy. If you have any questions or require any support regarding any attendance matters, please do not hesitate to contact the academy on 203013. Parents should telephone the academy on 01983 203103 and select Option 1 before 8.30am on each day of absence, informing of the reason of absence and when their child will be returning to the academy, leaving a message on the voicemail. Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence. Parents are required to send a letter of explanation of absence when their child returns to school. This should be handed into reception. This letter should detail the duration and reason for absence.

Despite the awful weather, CEC baking enthusiasts bought their bake off entries into school on Thursday ready for professional judgement by Miss Bracegirdle.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS On Saturday 30th March, eight of our year 12 students accompanied by Miss KingswellCleaves and Miss Wisniowski took part in a Model United Nations event at Ryde School. The Model United Nations is a public speaking/debating event for students, especially those interested in politics, where the students take the role of a delegate from a certain country and become the representative of that country in a UN committee. Students from CEC represented 3 different countries at the event. Morgan R and Angeline S represented the US, Beth P, Jennifer M and Millie H represented Poland and Kieran W, Danny F and EsmĂŠ T represented South Africa. Each individual worked incredibly hard to learn about their given country and topics, as well as coming up with position papers and resolutions to be debated. After an early start and a long day of debating everyone performed very well with CEC being awarded 6 out of the 7 potential certificates and the particular honour of South Africa coming top in the General Assembly, with the best delegation award. We are very proud of the way students conducted themselves on the day and the time they put into researching policies for their various counties; they were a credit to themselves and to CEC.

3G PITCH UPDATE It has been very exciting to see the progress of the construction of our 3G pitch. The contractors have been working hard and things are starting to take shape. We will continue to post weekly updates on how the pitch is progressing, so make sure to keep up to date with our weekly newsletter and our social media pages!

WORKSHOPS WITH THE AIR AMBULANCE Students across Years 9-13 spent yesterday attending workshops on the Air Ambulance, providing by the Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance. Students identified and worked out how to administer medications to intubate a patient and simulated packing a patient using a stretcher. A fascinating and rewarding day had by all. Mr Murdoch and his students are exceptionally grateful for this valuable vocational experience. Thanks to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for your time, patience and expertise.

DANCING SUCCESS!

For a larger version of this image THANK YOU—BOOK DONATION click here

A huge well done to Taylor M and Ruby R who, with dancing group The Starlight Boutique Senior Team, took part in an international dance competition last weekend at Disneyland Paris! They won 1st place in the Senior Category, 1st place in Street Dance, 3rd place in Musical Theatre and Overall Grand Champions with the highest marks in the competition.

Many thanks to the kind gentleman who donated a pile of ‘Wimpy Kid’ books to the college this week. The donation is hugely appreciated

KEEPING LIBRARY BOOKS SAFE We have recently had a number of library books returned to Mrs Bowen, which have been soaked from the rain. If children are carrying library books in their bags, and it is raining – please make sure that the books are in a plastic bag, or located at the rear of a rucksack. Many thanks

WARHAMMER LEAGUE SEMI FINALS Four students, Marcus, Beni, William and Oliver, travelled to Warhammer World in Nottingham on Monday to take part in the Warhammer Schools League Semi Finals.

A huge well done also to Summer-Louise E who also competed with The Starlight Boutique with the junior team. The junior showteam placed third for Musical Theatre and 2nd for Street Dance.

We are so incredibly proud of these girls and their achievements!

Having qualified in February, expectations were high but unfortunately two wins and two draws weren’t enough to qualify for the finals. Although we didn’t progress further in the tournament the experience was excellent and lots of competitive fun was had.

NEW SOUTHERN VECTIS ROUTE 51 Southern Vectis are really looking forward to welcoming Cowes Enterprise College students on board their new Route 51 and hope that the route will provide a more direct service to and from school for students rather than having to use Route 1 and walking to and from stops on Park Road. The bus will follow the standard Route 1 “via Round House” route and then turn off up Ward Avenue to serve the school. All usual bus stops are served en route. Standard fares will apply as per Route 1, though students can of course take advantage of purchasing either Freedom tickets for 7 days, 30 days or 90 days, or multi-day tickets (which don’t have to be used on consecutive days) in 5 day, 15 day or 30 day bundles, through our Key card scheme. These tickets are a great way of saving money on single fares and also tickets can be used outside of school times eg evenings, weekends, school holidays etc, allowing great flexibility. (the 7 day Freedom ticket can be bought as a paper ticket on the bus as well) For information on registering for the Key card and purchasing Freedom / Multi-day tickets, please visit http://www.islandbuses.info/page.shtml? pageid=1273 or contact our Customer Services department on 01202 678100 (0800-1830 Mondays to Fridays)
