Friday 8th March

Dear parents and carers As we move closer to Easter, I am struck by how quickly the weeks are passing and how close the GCSE and A Level exams are getting for our year 11 and 13s! To support our year 11s we have now given every student their printed revision plan booklets in a special assembly and also emailed them in a digital form. This means our year 11 students have a personalised daily guide to help structure and guide them through their revision. We have received excellent feedback from students and parents and are pleased that this support has been so well received. Please do encourage your child to show you their revision booklet and stay on track with their revision if you are a year 11 parent.

This week our year 8s have also been considering their GCSEs and are excited to be at the very start of their GCSE journeys! Having seen them through their transition last year and got them off to such a good start with us, our colleagues were so delighted to be guiding them through their option choices this week. Thank you to all parents for attending this evening; initial feedback has again been overwhelmingly positive.

We look forward to welcoming all Year 7 parents next week for our Year 7 parents’ evening. This is such an important evening in our calendar and I thank Year 7 parents in advance for joining us next week as we work together to support your children.

My parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot.

With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

COWES HARBOUR COMMISSION CELEBRATION EVENT A great night was had by all at the Cowes Harbour Commission design celebratory event and award giving ceremony last Friday at The Sir Max Aitkin Museum in Cowes. The DT students were tasked with creating an inspirational design idea for an iconic ‘welcome’ landmark to be sited on the 350 metre long Cowes Breakwater. All GCSE Design and Technology students in Years 9 and 10 completed this task, while learning about the composite materials this landmark could be made from. We then carried out internal judging of the design ideas and formally entered 11 designs from CEC. We are very proud of all the entries and believe it shows how creative our students here at Cowes are. Marcus Kendall’s entry was awarded 3rd prize- congratulations Marcus. Alan Titchmarsh, one of the judges, said the “Teaching at Cowes Enterprise College is clearly innovative to have created such a breadth of designs.” A huge well done to all the students that took part in this competition but with a special mention to those that were awarded certificates for their efforts: Orla G Adam B Gabby H Marcus K Billy B Rylan A S Ryan H Tia K Harry G Maisie H Ella-Louise P Jenson D

YEAR 9 GCSE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Year 9 GCSE DT have had their first electronics lesson as part of the board game project. They will be creating an electronic dice, alongside a lap jointed wooden box and their very own themed board and question cards. We are really looking forward to seeing the outcomes in the next few weeks.

CEC COLLABORATION WITH WIGHT AVIATION MUSEUM The Design Technology Department are proud to have been asked to work alongside the Wight Aviation Museum to create parts for a 13 metre replica of the famous Black Arrow rocket. This is the start of a great working relationship and we hope to be involved in many more projects moving forward. Noah and Toby from Year 11 were involved in the vacuum forming and recording of this process. This video will be available for viewing in the museum in the following months, we will be sure to let you know once it is all up and running. Thank you to Noah and Toby, you both did a very professional job.

MATHS FEAST CHALLENGE On Wednesday 6th March, 4 students from year 10 attended the annual Maths Feast Challenge at The Bay CE School in Sandown with Miss Ryan. Hans, Luke, Sneha and Holly (supported by sixth former Adam) tackled a series of mathematical challenges, including a round on networks, a topic usually not studied until Further Maths A Level! The group worked fantastically well together and were a credit to the academy. In their own words, they all had a great time and would encourage students to take part if they were given the opportunity next year!

WORLD BOOK DAY To celebrate World Book Day, we held a ‘Book Title Treasure Hunt’ Over break and lunch times, children had to hunt down 10 members of staff who were on duty around the school Each member of staff was displaying a book title 27 children managed to record all 10 staff members’ names and their book titles, and report back to the library. Congratulations to sisters Poppy and Holly Moody – who were the first to hand in their completed Treasure Hunt forms. Poppy and Holly received £5.00 Waterstones giftcards, as well as a free book each. All other entrants received a free book – they were able to choose from a selection of titles
