September 12-22, 2024 (look for ad)

Newnan High School began a new era on August 1: the first day of school in their rebuilt facility.

A catastrophic tornado in 2021 damaged the structure, causing students to attend online school, then multiple classes in trailers, with ninth graders moving to CEC’s campus. After three years, four months, and three days, the school is now fully open for business.

NHS Principal (and NHS graduate) Dr. Gamal Kemp is looking forward to having all of the teachers back on one campus. “It has been three years since teachers were able to have collaborative meetings with their departments. Each department will finally get to plan together in one meeting place. We’ve been saying this week, ‘We are Better Together!’”

Operating a high school during construction has provided challenges. “We’ve been trying to make school as normal as possible while our new facility was being built. We had an average of 300 - 600 construction workers on campus daily, with 18-wheelers and dump trucks coming and going each day, dropping off materials and operating loud drills. We made the best of what we had, and our teachers and students showed resilience and persevered through all of it,”

Kemp said.

Andrew Copeland, Coweta County School Board Chairman and District 5 representative, which includes the school, (and NHS graduate), said the school was rebuilt to last at least another 100 years. “Although the building carries a classic facade by design, it is truly state-of-the-art. From the academic halls to the FEMA-graded storm shelter to the athletic facilities, students will be able to achieve great things.

“I would like to thank all the individuals who worked tirelessly to get us to this point – Executive Director of Facilities Ronnie Cheek and his team, the administration, faculty, and staff of Newnan High School, Dr. Horton and central office staff, Parish Construction, and Southern A&E. We truly would not be here without them, and we on the board are all grateful.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the community for trusting us and the process throughout these challenging times. Despite these setbacks, the community’s unwavering support and trust were truly remarkable.

“You believed in our commitment to not only rebuild Newnan High School but to do so in a manner that honors the legacy of those who came before us. Your patience and understanding allowed us to focus on creating a facility that future generations will be proud of,” Copeland said.

A New Era for Newnan High School

The Opening Ceremony was held in the Max Bass Gym on July 28. Speakers included Dr. Gamal Kemp, NHS Principal; Jamie Glover, Assistant Principal; Andrew Copeland, School Board Chairman; Charlie Griffis of Parrish Construction; Newnan Mayor Keith Brady; Dr. Evan Horton, Superintendent of Schools; and Barbara Landreth, beloved retired NHS teacher.

Afterwards, the public was invited to tour the rebuilt and restored facility.

Dr. Kemp said, “The public will see what a modern school looks like with state-of-the-art upgrades, while still holding on to all the Newnan High traditions. From the new and improved auditorium, media center, storm shelter, classrooms, and desks, it is truly a sight to see!

“Our teachers and staff have been through a lot over the past three years. Their focus has remained on our students throughout the rebuild. I am so proud of the work they have put in and want the community to know how great the staff is here at Newnan High School.”

Notes from Perry Street

The Summer Olympics have started with the lighting of the Olympic torch, this time in Paris, as in France. Not Paris, Texas.

And so a few more tidbits to get you pumped for USA! USA!

There are plus or minus ( full disclosure I’m collecting this information from the Internet and from what I know are reputable sources and just not worrying about quote marks) 10,714 athletes from 206 different countries participating. Russia and Belarus were not invited because, well, the war in Ukraine.

The United States has the largest national delegation of athletes at 593. For those keep track at home, France is second with 573. Australia (460), Germany (427), Japan (404), Italy (403), China (388), Spain (382), Great Britain (327), and Canada (318) round out the Top 10.

At the other end of the spectrum, Belize (100-meter race), Liechtenstein (crosscountry cycling), Nauru (100-meter race) and Somalia (800 meter race) are each sending one athlete. Admit it would be pretty cool for Belize and Nauru to race against each other.

Other countries include Cabo Verde, Comoros, Eritrea, Malawi, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe (all in Africa), Saint Ktts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadine (Americas); Tajikistan, Brunei Darussalam, Kyrgyzstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Democratic Republic of TimorLeste (Asia); Andorra, Georgia (the country, not us), Montenegro, (Europe); Cook Islands, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Tuvalu, Vanuatu (Oceania) Note: No one from North or South Pole.

All medals, gold, silver and bronze, will have 18 grams of iron taken from the Eiffel Tower renovation and shaped into a hexagon within the medal. I think this is a great gesture, but now question the structural integrity of said tower

Making its Olympic debut - “Breaking,” aka Breakdancing. Sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing are also in for the second time.

For all you surfers, if you bought a ticket to France, you won’t see much surfing as that contest is being held in Tahiti. I’m not a location scout, so I don’t know anything about that decision. I do know, however, the athletes will be housed in the Olympics’ first floating village. Dude.

Overall, there are 329 events among 32 different sports. We, as in the United States, are participating in 31 of those events. We are not participating in team handball. I got nothin.’

Karate, baseball and softball are out. Apparently the French can’t hit a ball with a stick even when it is coming right at them.

And apparently, we have gender equality for the first time: out of the roughly (see above note) 10,500 athletes, 5,250 are men and 5,250 are women. Again, roughly.

Finally, a little history.

The original Olympics were celebrated in Greece circa 776 BC. Events included discus, chariot racing and wrestling. Rome banned the Games in 396 AD, considering it a pagan ritual. This is when the Romans were Christians. The Olympics were not held for another 1,500 years until the modern Games began in Athens in 1896.

We are missing a few sports, like air ballooning, rope climbing and tug of war. That first modern Olympics only had 14 countries participating. Gold medals today are gold-plated and primary comprised of silver. The last real gold medals were made in 1912.

And finally, finally. We, again, as in the United States, have won a medal at every Winter Olympic Games. And we are the only country to do so.

Which of course leads me to close with USA! USA!

Summer is all but here. If you haven’t already, it’s time to store winter items.

Before storing heavy sweaters, coats, and blankets, ensure they’re thoroughly cleaned.

Winter wear accumulates dirt, oils, and sweat, which can cause odors, attract pests, and damage fabrics if stored uncleaned.

Imagine finding your favorite wool sweater musty and motheaten next winter. Properly washing and dry-cleaning items before storage preserves their quality and extends their lifespan. Be certain to store items in breathable sealed bags and acid-free tissue paper.

We have both should you need them or we can clean and store everything for you in our climate-controlled space.

Taking these steps ensures your winter essentials will be fresh, clean, and ready to keep you warm when the cold weather returns.

• 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of ageappropriate reading material in their home?

How Do Books Help?

The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home.

Reading at least 15 minutes daily with your child can drastically improve their language and academics.

The Coweta County Ferst Foundation mission is to provide a free monthly age-appropriate book for every child under the age of five in Coweta County. Visit our website for more information: cowetaferst.org

Low Appraisals

One of the most common questions I receive is what happens if we have a low appraisal. Most real estate contracts are contingent upon the property appraising for the sales price. The appraisal is ordered by the lender, but typically paid for by the buyer unless negotiated otherwise. A low appraisal can be common in a hot market where home values are rising faster than the comparable sales can keep up. The good news is that a low appraisal does not mean the deal is over. In fact, we are able to work out most low appraisals.

One option you have is to appeal the appraisal. This is when you need to lean on your Realtor to find suitable comparable sales that will support your contract price. Appraisers can make mistakes and overlook sales. Make sure you or your Realtor look at off-market sales and not just transactions on the local MLS. Once you have some transactions that you think will support the value, the buyer’s lender will send these to the appraiser to see if they warrant an adjustment. Unfortunately, appraisal challenges typically do not have a high success rate.

Another option is to order a second appraisal. This second appraisal will still need to be approved by the buyer’s lender. All parties must agree to the use of a second appraisal. The cost can be anywhere for a few hundred dollars to well above $1,000 depending on the type of appraisal.

A third option, and usually the most successful, is to negotiate with the seller. Typically, a seller will negotiate on a low appraisal. Keep in mind if the seller is paying your closing costs, per the sales contract, they may ask you to pay a portion or all of your closing costs in return for a price reduction on the low appraisal. A good listing agent will know to ask for this.

Accepting a low appraisal can be in the best interest of a seller to avoid the risk of not finding another buyer, going through another negotiation, home inspection, appraisal, etc. In fact, with FHA and VA loans, the low appraisal will actually stay with the house for six months so a seller will be even more motivated to work the negotiation out. The seller could however terminate and wait on a buyer with a conventional or different type of loan. The option of negotiating with the seller is often successful because most sellers realize that an appraiser will likely be using the same comparable sales for any appraisal.

As a buyer, you could always terminate the deal and find another home. This is common when the difference between the sales price and the appraisal value is very large. This is where your Realtor can play a valuable role for you. It is important to have an appraisal contingency written in your contract, to protect you from a low appraisal. This will also allow you to receive your earnest money back and exit the deal without penalty.

A low appraisal does not mean the deal is over. In fact, they usually work out and to the buyer’s favor. A good Realtor is key in placing language and contingencies in the contract to protect you from a low value. Realtors can also assist you in negotiating with the seller and listing agent to work the deal out for everyone.

Deadpool & Wolverine (now playing) – l Fix Rating 6/10 –Don’t call it a movie. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a goofy attraction at a profane, perverted, and sporadically entertaining amusement park. What the production lacks in coherent storytelling, it makes up for with a constant barrage of bloody comedic IP cameos accompanied by snappy comebacks, nearly wearing out its welcome around the halfway point. All that’s missing is a laugh track!

With a special helping of religious zeal, “Deadpool” completists will apologize for the project’s (don’t call it a film) utter disregard for anything approximating an engaging narrative. Some may even suggest that I missed the point. But at best, the comedy stylings of star Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy should be considered a parody of superhero movies, which should help audiences understand where it sits in the struggling Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The desperation on display with this third blood-drenched Deadpool outing is telling. And since nothing is meant to be taken seriously, Reynolds’ likable, wise guy routine as the “merc with a mouth” Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, helps to blunt elitist analysis from critics (like me) who hope for a transcendent viewing experience.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is more a series of skits and fourth-wallbreaking self-aware standup comedy than a comprehensible film. How entertaining you find it will be reflective of your immersion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The pity is that the first two films had more heart and emotional gravity than this theme park extravaganza.

Blink Twice (August 23) – Zoë Kravitz jumps from actress to director in this mystery thriller with horror undertones. The all-star cast led by Channing Tatum does their best with the derivative material that seems a little dated once the secret is revealed. The movie is handsomely shot, and the lead performance by Naomi Ackie (who made a solid Whitney Houston in 2022’s biopic) is engaging, even when the story fails her.

Tatum plays a bad-boy tech billionaire who invites his friends and new acquaintances to his private island for a little elicit debauchery. Ackie plays the naïve Frida, a catering employee who manages to get an island invite along with her friend Jess (“Search Party” star Alia Shawkat). As the partying rages, Frida begins to notice that something sinister may be going on. The ensemble cast features Simon Rex, Christian Slater, and “Hit Man” star Adria Arjona.

Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color (August 1) – The theatrical color version was a transcendent prequel to the first “Godzilla” that was re-edited to include Raymond Burr in 1956. I found “Godzilla Minus One” to be one of 2023’s best films, and delivering it in black and white makes perfect sense, as the 1954 original was also minus color. The “Minus One” story follows a disgraced kamikaze pilot in post-war Japan who has a chance to redeem himself by taking on the killer lizard that terrorizes his city. The film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Joe Rogan: Burn the Boats (August 3) – The controversial, popular podcaster and comedian brings his first standup comedy special in six years to Netflix.

Umbrella Academy (season 4, August 8) – The world is ending one last time, and it is up to the unusual family of heroes to reunite and save it. This underrated series based on the Dark Horse comic has been consistently entertaining with its offbeat approach to the superhero genre. Let’s hope they go out with a big bang and many tears.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (season 2, August 29) – We learn from the second season trailer that “every soul in Middle Earth is in peril.” Amazon’s big-budgeted but small-screen extension of the J.R.R. Tolkien universe may struggle to find its footing in the wake of HBO’s successful second season of “House of the Dragon.” If nothing else, “The Rings of Power” should offer a more family-friendly fantasy adventure given the adult nature of “Dragon.”

Only Murders in the Building (season 4, August 27) – The three amateur detectives take on a new case while also negotiating a big Hollywood deal for a movie adaptation of their popular podcast. This Emmy-winning show stars Steven Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, who this season are joined by an all-star ensemble cast including Meryl Streep, Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, and Melissa McCarthy.

Bad Monkey (August 14) – Vince Vaughn stars in this adaptation of the Carl Hiaasen novel about a Miami police detective who is demoted to a restaurant inspector in the Florida Keys. Of course, he stumbles onto a new case that might help restore his position. Vaughn looks terrific and is right at home in the role of the disgraced detective, who appears to have no filter.

City of God: The Fight Rages On (August 25) — I’m not sure how I feel about this series sequel to “City of God,” the fantastic 2002 Oscar-nominated epic that’s one of the best crime/gangster films ever made. Co-director Fernando Meirelles returns along with star Alexandre Rodrigues, who plays a photographer chronicling the struggle to survive in crime-ridden communities of Rio. The trailer teases a crime saga, but one that looks much slicker and more familiar than the gritty and almost documentary approach of the film that came before it.

Theaterical Teasers:

Trap (August 2) — M. Night Shyamalan returns with another twisty story that takes place at a pop concert where an army of police is pursuing a serial killer. Word is that this one won’t be screened for critics. Is it because Shyamalan wants to protect the film’s secrets, or is it to guard against the possibility of negative reviews?

Borderlands (August 9) — This Gearbox video game series adaptation has been in the can for several years. The movie, directed by Eli Roth, sports an impressive cast led by Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart. The story has an outlaw named Lilith (Blanchett) returning to her home and gathering up an eclectic gang to battle monsters, protect a powerful youngster, and, of course, save the universe.

Alien: Romulus (August 16) — This seventh outing in the “Alien” franchise is what’s been dubbed an “interquel.” The story takes place between “Alien” and “Aliens.” Based on the trailers, it looks a bit like a retread of the 1979 original but this time featuring space colonists

who find the dangerous xenomorphs on an abandoned space station.

The Crow (August 23) — This fifth “Crow” film is a reboot. Bill Skarsgård (see “It” and “John Wick: Chapter 4”) takes on the role of Eric Draven, the musician who comes back from the dead to become the title avenging anti-hero. The well-regarded 1994 original film starred Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed in a freak accident on set.

Reagan (August 30) — Dennis Quaid plays late President Ronald Reagan in this biopic from director Sean McNamara (see “Soul Surfer”). Penelope Ann Miller takes on the role of First Lady Nancy Reagan, with Mena Suvari as President Reagan’s first wife, Jane Wyman. Can this be the definitive Reagan movie when other films about one of the most influential leaders of the modern age failed to capture the man’s greatness?

Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did. I’m the Executive Director for BTG Community Outreach Inc., DBA Bridging the Gap in Newnan. We serve in-need and in-crisis community members with food and resources to help them move toward resolution and restoration. I moved to Newnan five years ago with my son Jason. I love being part of this community. Best piece of advice you’ve received.

When working through an obstacle or problem and you believe there is only one option, you are wrong. There is ALWAYS another option, another solution. Change your prospective, look at all possibilities. The best solution is rarely the first one that comes to mind. If I had it to do over …

I’d have stayed in school for another 18 months and gotten my Master’s Degree.

You are going on an extended solo trip. What three books and albums would you take?

Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.

I started my career coordinating large-scale special events in Atlanta, including festivals, concerts, and other events. I actually produced the very first Dropping of the Peach on New Year’s Eve in Atlanta in the 1990s.

You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why.

Brene Brown and Ester Perel for their research, work and insights into why and how people engage with one another and the world the way that they do.; My grandfather Wade Campbell (deceased) to hear his stories about family, friends, and his life. Favorite movies(s)

There are so many favorites for so many reasons but here are a few: When Harry Met Sally, Star Wars (Episode IV in 1977) , Three Thousand Years of Longing, Rachael Getting Married, True Grit ( Apologies to The Duke, but I favor the Jeff Bridges remake.)

Dogs or cats?

Both. But I have a heartfelt weakness for big, sloppy dogs!

Your favorite quote and why.

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.” Maya Angelou. People can be so hard on themselves and each other for being human. We all do the best we can with what we know and have at the moment. I think remembering that makes us all kinder to one another.

Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.

I am so proud of my time working behind the scenes during the aftermath of the Newnan tornado with countless other individuals and groups to help our Coweta County neighbors who were impacted.

What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own.

Never be afraid to take a chance and blaze your own trail. Success will not be about how much money you make or meeting others’ expectations for success. It will be about learning to like yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it. You’ll have people come in and out of your life. God put each one of them in your life to teach you something about yourself—pay attention.

Healthy Tips for Back-to-School Season

Summer is winding down, and kids are headed back to school. It’s a hectic time of year for caregivers who have plenty to worry about, from school supplies and new clothes, to immunizations and their child’s health.

This time of year brings all kinds of changes to routine, and it is helpful to make plans for the upcoming school year before it starts. Kids who are healthy, happy and well-rested have the best chance of succeeding in the classroom, and in life.

Here are a few things parents should think about, according to a local pediatrician, Lewis Jackson, M.D., to help manage sleep schedules, healthy meals, sufficient time for exercise, and illness prevention.

Sleep: Kids need to get enough sleep to do their best academically. If they’re not as alert, it can also affect their mood, and children who are sleep-deprived can sink into depression or experience worsening anxiety. During the summer months, many children stay up later and will need to adjust their bedtimes to get up earlier for those early morning school days. A healthy night’s sleep is about eight to 10 hours a night for most. Eliminate all screen time at least 1-2 hours before bedtime (except homework on the Chromebook).

Healthy Meals: Good nutrition is very important for health and for academic success. Children should be eating five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. It is also important that kids eat breakfast before school and eat dinner early enough at night to get to bed on time. Families are busy, with work and sports practices, but a little planning can help overcome obstacles to good family meals. Additionally, limiting processed foods (and the chemicals they contain) improves health in many areas.

Exercise: Kids need exercise every day. Kids who run and play feel better, sleep better and do better in school. Turn off the TV and put away the video games and cell phones, and they will automatically choose a better activity.

Illness prevention: Children need to be up-to-date on vaccinations to attend school. Don’t wait until the last minute as appointments usually fill up fast this time of year. It is also a good time to remind kids to wash their hands correctly and frequently. Proper hand hygiene is even more crucial during this time of year, especially for those of us who are immunocompromised—so make sure you do your part to keep yourself and others safe.

With school comes exposure to a large number of other people, and it typically takes several days for not only your children’s bodies, but yours, to adjust. Doing the things mentioned above will equip you and your child to handle the increased exposures and the inevitable illnesses that come with the start of a new school year.

“For all of us, but especially for children and teens, it is important to follow a proper diet, to exercise and to get plenty of sleep to keep our immune system strong,” says Dr. Jackson.

This summer, we had 43 students representing Georgia Cyber Academy, East Coweta High School, Newnan High School, Northgate High School, and Trinity Christian School. “While volunteering with us, students may see themselves entering the healthcare field, or they may learn that it is not their calling,” said Johns. “It is good to have new experiences, learn what you are passionate about, and start making plans concerning your career path. In short, this is a growing experience.”

Junior volunteers serve in various departments throughout the hospital. This year, volunteers were placed in 19 different departments, ranging from Supply Chain, Engineering, Inpatient Care including Neurology, Mother/Baby and Care Management. including inpatient floors, the Emergency Department, Supply Chain, the Mother/Baby unit, Engineering, Respiratory, Imaging, Cardiac, Dietary, Patient Access, EVS, and Rehab Services.
