t’s that time again when the buds are out and birds and twirping and the warm weather is coming back! Isn’t it wonderful that we can count on that every year?
We are excited to be including the beautiful wedding of Ciara and Riley Griffith and we have also featured the photographer, Janelle Awe who has been so kind to interview with us some of the tips that will make your bridal and wedding pictures stunning. Have you noticed the new 70’s trend in fashion in the main stream? I go dive into the originality of this supposedly new trend. We also have plenty of spring fashion with Double D Ranchwear. If you are planning a wedding, look no further than some of our hand picked cotton dresses. The perfect addition to any country wedding. We also go in depth of the connection between horses and children with Sean Russell’s article, “10 Ways Horses Build Character In Children.” You don’t want to miss this one!

TWO COWGIRLS WILL BE COMPETING IN SEASON 3 OF THE ULTIMATE COWBOY SHOWDOWN
T
he 3rd season of Ultimate Cowboy Showdown, hosted by Trace Adkins will debut on Thursday, April 21st at 8PM ET and they are featuring two competitive cowgirls, Brianna Markum-McClain and Sarah Foti. In Ultimate Cowboy Showdown, top cowboys from across the United States compete to win a herd of cattle (worth at least $50,000), a coveted belt buckle and a lifetime of bragging rights. As they lock horns in a series of grueling challenges, they are judged on their skills, knowledge, grit, and passion. The diverse male and female contestants include ranch owners and managers, horse trainers, ranch hands, bull riders, and rodeo competitors. One-by-one cowboys who don’t perform are eliminated by country music icon Trace Adkins and a panel of expert judges, and in the end, only one cowboy rides away with

the herd. No season of Ultimate Cowboy Showdown would be complete without revered host Trace Adkins, who also serves as Executive Producer of the show. He had this to say: “With each new season of Ultimate Cowboy Showdown, I marvel at the level of talent in the contestants. I get to see some of the best cattlemen and ranchers from across the country, men and women who make their living off the land. They make my job pretty tough throughout the competition – I never want to send anyone home; but, when they aren’t on their game, I have no problem telling them to ‘hit the trail.’ I’m honored to judge this season’s competition, and I look forward to seeing who takes home the cattle, the buckle, and the bragging rights!”
ENTERTAINMENT Brianna Markum-McClain Tatum, New Mexico
A fourth-generation New Mexico cowboy, Brianna is a powerhouse boss like her late father. She has been known to make grown men cry. On top of her full-time job managing a major convention center, Brianna also operates her own rodeo company with her husband and still finds time to rope competitively. She qualified for the 2020 World Champion Rodeo Alliance and won the Original Team Roping Heading Finals. At this point in her career, Brianna has won so many buckles she has started giving them away.
SARAH FOTI CRYSTAL RIVER, FLORIDA
Sarah is a first-generation cowboy from central Florida. As a day worker, she tends to 900 head of cattle. When not working on ranches, she manages a successful beehive operation of 3,000 active colonies. In 2018, Sarah and her team won the "Day of The Cowboy Ranch Rodeo" in Alabama after she roped and loaded her yearling in record time.

10 Ways Character In STABLE LIFE
-By Sean Russell
HORSES ARE LARGE AND INTIMIDATING, SO NATURALLY IT TAKES A LOT OF CONFIDENCE TO BE ABLE TO CONTROL ONE. LETTING A CHILD HANDLE A GENTLE HORSE WILL DO WONDERS FOR THEIR CONFIDENCE. differently. A good horseman never stops learning, even experts and trainers will admit that they learn something new everyday from 1. Learn Responsibility - Horses will teach their horses. Horses will make your child your child responsibility very quickly. Make realize that learning is an on going process sure that your child does all the work involved that never ends. This can transcend into other in caring for the horse. Everything from feeding, cleaning stalls, grooming, saddling aspects, such as school and relationships. and riding. Children will want to ride but they may not always be eager to do the work. 4. Build Confidence - Horses are large and However children almost always fall in love intimidating, so naturally it takes a lot of with the horses that they handle and they will confidence to be able to control one. Letting want to take as good care of them. Once they a your child handle a gentle horse will do know that the horse depends on them and wonders for their confidence. Most people that in order to ride they have to take good are naturally a little bit timid, especialy a child care of the horses, they will learn to be more of horses because they are so big. By handling responsible in other aspects of there life. a gentle horse children will overcome their fear and learn that they can safely handle and 2. Learn Trust - Horses must be able to trust control the same animal that they were once their handlers. One of the first things that your had great fear of. The better your child learns child will learn about handling and riding how to handle the horse, the more confident horses is to be trustworthy and dependable, because if the horse doesn’t trust its handler he/she will become. When children do it will not obey him/her. This can be a very well with the horses that they handle, their confidence goes up and their self esteem valuable life long lesson for your child. improves. They now realize that this huge 3. Learn to be Open Minded - Every horse creature they were once afraid of is a beautiful is different and will have to be handled and loving animal.
Here are just some of the ways horses build character in children:

Horses Build Children

5. Learn Patience - Horses are like children themselves, and training a horse is much like teaching a child. When your child has become a confident and skilled rider, letting them help train a horse will be an excellent experience for them. Horses require a lot of patience because training a young horse involves a lot of repetition and time. This is a lesson that will follow them in all aspects of life.
6. Self Discipline - Horses take a lot of time and work, so your child will have to be dedicated to learning how to ride and handle horses effectively. I have found that dedication is rarely something that children lacks when it comes to horses. People, especially young people, have a natural attraction to horses and enjoy spending time with them. However, because horses are a lot of work your child will soon learn self discipline. www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 25
For example, instead of sleeping in in the morning, they will be up and out feeding and cleaning. Horses must be fed twice daily and have access to fresh water at all times. Their stalls must be cleaned regularly and they must receive regular exercise. This will take a lot of time, but most people find that it is worth it for the time they get to spend riding, or just being with horses. 7. Teaches Sensitivity - Horses can be very sensitive creatures. They have keen senses, and can sense if someone is afraid, angry, happy, etc. They communicate with body language and are very sensitive to their handler’s body position. Because horses are so sensitive, the handler must be also. The handler must be able to tell how the horse is feeling and why it is behaving the way it is. The handler must learn to interpret the horses body language and to communicate effectively with the horse using its own language. When a horse misbehaves, the handler must decide whether or not the horse is doing so out of fear, stubbornness, anger, pain etc. and must respond appropriately. 8. How to Learn From Our Mistakes - When your child first starts learning to ride and handle horses they will make a lot of mistakes and will learn quickly not to make the same mistake twice. That is what horsemanship is all about. When a rider makes a mistake he/she
26 | Cowgirls In Style | April/May 2022
cannot deny it. They must acknowledge the mistake and correct it. The rider must move on after correcting the mistake and not dwell on it. Handling and riding horses will teach your child to use their past mistakes to improve their future horsemanship skills and this will tanscend into other aspects of your childs life. 9. Learn Respect - Children will learn to respect their horses and themselves. Horses are large, dangerous creatures and they demand respect, yet in order to be handled safely they must also respect their handlers. By learning how to handle a horse, children will become more respectful of there horse and its nature. By being trustworthy, confident and responsible your child will earn the respect of there horse. 10. To Have Fun - Last but certainly no least, your child should have fun and enjoy being apart of the horse life style. You don’t want to put too much demand on your childArticle Submission, you need to let them have fun with there horse as well as know when its time to be serious. I hope the information provided here will help you realize how important it is for you to find a creative yet fulfilling way for you to teach your child all aspects of owning and caring for a horse.

70’s Styles Making A Comeback, Or Have They Already Been A Thing? Many main stream headlines touting that 70’s styles are back in , but cowgirls have been wearing them for some time.
B
rowsing the internet, I couldn’t help but notice the different titles of several fashion websites stating, “‘70’s Fashion Trends,’ ‘Spring 70’s Denim Trend,’ ‘How To Wear The 70’s Fashion Trends The Celebs Are Bringing,’” and so on... But is this really a new trend? If you look at the cowgirl fashion the past four years, cowgirls have been blazing the trail of fashion. They have been wearing this trend for some time now. I have come to realize that many times the Cowgirl Fashion leads the way to many main 50 | Cowgirls In Style | April/May 2022
stream styles. With denim, the cowgirl style has been leading the way for years, whether it’s with the rhinestone look, the flaired leg, and bringing back the high rise waist again. You will notice the new fashion jean on the opposite page with the flaired leg, embroidery and more. This so called new look has been a thing with many of the cowgirl manufacturing companies. We have included some of the latest popular styles that are being promoted with the main stream fashion and we have also included past cowgirl fashions that have been around for the past few years.
Below are some of the new 70’s styles that are making a comeback. You don’t have to look too closely to realize these styles have been the Cowgirl fashion for some time. Check out the past and current cowgirl fashion trends on the following pages

Questions & Answers
White Creek Ranch Photography We chat with Janelle Awe, wedding photographer about what it takes to get beautiful, memorable wedding photos Cowgirls In Style: Could you tell us about White dings would be my top choice. I really enjoy capCreek Ranch Photography? How did it get its turing different relationships and emotions and name? telling a love story. Janelle Awe: I started photography when I was in college, shooting on a film camera taking Fashion Photography and continued with it into my Fashion Degree. It was then put on hold while I worked other businesses and built a family until I finally fell in love with the idea of taking photos full time. My business was originally called Janelle Awe Photography but my husband and I purchased land west of Bowden with a ravine and the White Creek running through it. I wanted to change my business name to something less personalized and loved the idea of incorporating our land into the name. I also grew up in the rodeo industry and my husband grew up raising cattle so I really wanted to bring that into my business. CIS: When did you start your love of photography? J.A.: I am truly inspired and driven by the outdoors, the western lifestyle, anything boho and of course romance. I have to say that I’m a romantic at heart. I love it all...the novels, the movies, and the photos. If I had to choose, couples and wed-
CIS: What are some tips you give brides and couples to achieve their best wedding photos? J.A.: I believe your love story is best told by being truly genuine. It’s always easiest to work with a photographer you get along with, but you also need to be in tune with your partner. Enjoy each other, take the time to appreciate being there together and celebrating such an amazing moment. Sometimes it’s easier said than done. Not everyone feels comfortable in front of a camera. If I notice a couple is struggling, I keep them moving and talking or laughing. It gives them the chance to forget they’re being photographed and it gives me the opportunity to capture them in a candid and real moment. I always like to get to know my couples first, either by meeting them during pre-wedding photos which are some of my favorite shoots, or capturing them during getting ready photos. These can be done either at the place where they get ready or at the ceremony venue depending on the timeline. It takes the edge off and everyone has a relationship before the ceremony even begins. (cont’d) www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 55
If you are wanting to capture photos after the ceremony, I always suggest going somewhere pre-planned. It could either be on location of the ceremony or reception venue or you could take a bus and drive somewhere. Nothing starts a marriage celebration like a party bus and it always guarantees great photos! I usually suggest a field or somewhere with trees or a river, anything to create interest and somewhere with room to move around! If you aren’t in the country, find an abandoned lot or an old building in an industrial area or rent a studio location. The options are endless. One of my favorite parts of the wedding day is stealing the Newlyweds for sunset shots. This gives us the opportunity to capture the prettiest light of the day. It also gives the couple a chance to breath and take in everything that’s happened during the day, and time to just enjoy each other. This is what’s most important even if the sun hides behind the clouds. If I had any suggestions, it would be to do what you want to do. Photographers are usually up for anything! I’ve been on riverboat rides between the ceremony and reception where fishing rods were brought out and we stopped at every amazing spot to take photos along the river. I’ve jumped in trucks and gone 4x4ing through the fields to shoot in wide open spaces. I’ve captured grooms falling off their horse trying to ride bareback. I’ve shot the wedding party in the middle of a rodeo...we basically took over the whole rodeo arena! My advice is to make this day your own! Get creative. It doesn’t have to cost extra, you just have to make it happen and go for it! It’s these small things that make your wedding day uniquely you, that you’ll remember the most and the photos will be absolutely priceless.
