10 STEPS TO PREPARE YOUR HORSE FOR AUTUMN
By: Susan Gentry
GETTING READY FOR THE FALL AND WINTER CAN BE DAUNTING WHEN YOU HAVE HORSES. HERE ARE 10 QUICK
STEPS TO GET READY FOR FALL
As the leaves start to change colors and a crisp chill fills the air, it’s essential for equestrians to focus on horses autumn prep. Preparing for the autumn months is crucial not just for survival but for ensuring your horse thrives during this beautiful time of year. Let’s dive into ten steps you should follow to transition smoothly from summer to fall with your equine companion.
1. Assess Their Diet
As days get shorter and temperatures drop, your horse’s nutritional needs might change. Check your horse’s body condition score (BCS) and adjust their feed as necessary.
2. Increase Forage
During autumn, grass can become sparse and less
nutritious. Offering plenty of hay ensures your horse gets enough fiber, which is vital for digestion. Aim for high-quality hay to keep their gut healthy.
3. Check Water Supply
Cooler weather may sometimes lead to reduced water intake. Ensure your horse has access to clean, unfrozen water by checking water troughs regularly, especially early in the morning when it’s chilly.
4. Grooming Routine
Solid grooming not only gets rid of dirt and debris but also helps to check for any injuries or health issues. Brush their coat frequently to stimulate natural oils and provide warmth as their winter coat begins to come in.
5. Prepare Gear for Weather Changes
Check your tack and blankets for wear and tear. Ensuring that your saddle pads and blankets are clean and free of mold is vital as moisture can be an issue in autumn.
6. Update the Horse’s Shelter
As the weather gets colder, make sure your barn is in good condition. Inspect for leaks and check that there is adequate ventilation. A dry and comfortable environment is crucial for your horse’s health.
7. Vaccination and Health Checks
Autumn is an excellent time for vaccinations and health assessments. Consult your veterinarian to ensure your horse’s vaccinations are up to date and you are prepared for potential seasonal illnesses.
“Routine veterinary care can help prevent diseases that can thrive during changing seasons.” – The Equine Journal
8. Plan for Riding Adjustments
In the autumn, you might need to adapt your riding
schedule. Pay attention to changing daylight and temperature. Aim for earlier rides when temperatures are still mild, and keep sessions shorter as needed.
9. Have a Fall Fencing Check
Wild autumn winds can cause damage, so keep your fencing in top shape. Regularly inspect your fencing for broken boards or loose wires to keep your horse safe.
10. Prepare for Seasonal Changes and Events
Finally, consider planning for autumn activities like trail rides and shows. Look out for local events to participate in, but note that the calendar might shift with the arrival of shorter days.
By following these ten steps, you can make sure both you and your horse are ready for the beautiful autumn ahead. Proper horses autumn prep ensures that your equine friend stays healthy, happy, and engaged during this season of change. Embrace the opportunity to bond with your horse while enjoying the cooler weather!
PHYLLIS BURCHETT, AWARD WINNING EQUESTRIAN
PHOTOGRAPHER
PHYLLIS BURCHETT PHOTOGRAPHY
By: Susan Gentry
PHYLLIS BURCHETT IS A WORLD RENOWNED EQUINE PHOTOGRAPHER IN ADDITION TO BEING KNOWN FOR HER WILDLIFE AND LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY AS WELL. SHE HAS BEEN FEATURED IN MANY NATIONAL MAGAZINES SUCH AS WESTERN HORSEMAN, HORSE AND RIDER, COWBOYS AND INDIANS, WORKING RANCH MAGAZINE, JUST TO NAME A FEW.
WE ARE PROUD TO FEATURE HER BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHY IN THIS ISSUE. ENJOY THE FOLLOWING PAGES AS SHE CAPTURES THE TRUE LIFESTYLE OF THE AMERICAN COWGIRL.
Phyllis Burchett’s love of horses has guided her life’s purpose. She enjoyed a successful horse training career that earned her many World and National Championships, primarily at Appaloosa shows. She also trained horses for her amateur and youth clients who went on to win multiple titles. Eventually, Phyllis moved her concentration from the show pen to the breeding barn where she managed an extensive facility that offered both stallion and mare services for a variety of horse breeds.
Upon retiring from the horse industry, Phyllis embraced her love of travel and art, becoming a photographer. After having spent a lifetime in the equine industry, Phyllis explored landscape and wildlife photography, but eventually, the horses called her back. She has since dedicated herself to telling the story of the horse in images. She has been honored to photograph horses across the globe including the magnificent white horses of the Camargue in France, the horse fisherman of Belgium, the Connemara Pony of Ireland, and repeated trips to the iconic home and visage of the Icelandic horse. Her favorite subject, however, is the American Western horse at work on the ranch.
Phyllis began leading other photographers to opportunities where they could also capture the beauty of horses. She has hosted many photo tours and workshops across the United States and abroad. Her annual Iceland Equine Photo Tour is incredibly popular and always maintains a waiting list at least two years out!
In 2018, Phyllis, along with business partner Kimberly Beer, founded Cowgirls with Cameras hosting learning and on-location shooting opportunities for photographers who are interested in capturing the Western ranch and equine lifestyle. In 2020, Cara Taylor Swift joined the organization to form what is now the dynamic trio of Western Adventure Photography. Cowgirls with Cameras is your source for learning the art of equine and outdoor photography. They help amateur and professional photographers master their craft with creativity and style. Their workshops, retreats, and classes are open, inviting environments by design, so you can feel free to explore fresh perspectives, acquire new skills, and have fun doing it!
Phyllis’ work is licensed for home décor and exhibited in art galleries. She is a signature member of the Cowgirl Artists of America, a member of the Professional Photographers Association and the Equine Photographers Network. She has won many awards for her work, including being named in the 2024 Western Life & Style 30 over 30 and has been featured twice in the Best of the Western Horseman Photographers.
