10 Steps To Breaking & Backing your horse
hen I started writing my tips for breaking a young horse, I thought I must be mad, what did I know? There are loads of experts out there all of fering advice and I was just a humble horse owner, not a trainer etc. Then I decided that if my story helps anyone to have the confidence to work with their own horse then I believe they will find it a rewarding ex perience and it will be beneficial to both the horse or pony and themselves. Backing, breaking and training a young horse. Well, it’s something that we are told is best left to the experts and to some degree I agree, as you can do a lot of dam age to a horse at such a young age, but with the right support and information I do believe you can make a good job of it. It’s easy to say leave it to the experts, but for most of us our horses and ponies are part of our family. We are the ones who are with them every day and the ones who have built up mutual trust and a bond with them. I took a break from owning my own horse for about 15 years. Then found myself, in my naivety, being the proud owner of a 2 yr old filly. I fell in love with her, what more can I say? She was 16.1hh and very power ful. A lot could have gone wrong. I did contemplate sending her away when the time came, to have her professional broken, backed and schooled. There were several problems with this idea though. Number one was the cost, I just didn’t have the money to do that as the quotes I had attained were extortionate. Number 2 was, this was my horse, I had spent hours and hours in the stable with her, bonding, grooming and just sitting there gaining her trust. I didn’t want to send her away and lose all that. I knew she trusted me, she would follow me around the paddock like a dog, if I ran she would trot after me. Quite scary when you have a 16.1hh thoroughbred chasing you. I also discovered she had never been walked off the yard, boxed, lunged or had a bit anywhere near her. I figured it was going to be a long drawn out process. In reality, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Al though I did take things very slowly, I found backing her to be extremely straight forward.
1. Spend time bonding with your horse or pony, don’t just rush into breaking it. You will need time to build up mutual trust.

4. Introduce the bit slowly - don’t just expect to put it in your horses mouth and leave it there for hours. Try a few minutes at a time over several week and get a bit suitable for a young horse. I used a copper key bit.
7. When lunging the first few times in tack make sure stirrups and leathers are not flapping around and spooking your horse.
10. Take backing your horse or pony slowly, take the lead from the animal. If they are look ing stressed or anxious or are really misbehav ing stop. There is generally a reason.

It took me about 2.5 months to back my horse from only ever having a head collar on to gently hacking out with me on her.
8. When you do introduce someone on their back ensure you are the one who is talking to your horse, after all you are the one who is built up the trust.
9. Try to get someone light to be the person who first sits on your horse. Start with them just ly ing over your horse and then gradually sitting. Make sure every movement of the rider is slow a fluid. Again make sure this isn’t rushed and is done over weeks.
6. Before you even think of putting someone on your horses back get the horse used to wearing the saddle and bridle on the lunge or in hand.
I used a lot of common sense, sought loads of advice from local tack shops and the people on the yard, and read as much information as I could find including everyone else’s tips on breaking a young horse. A lot of the techniques and equipment had evolved from when I had had my last horse. So I had to learn what to do with it again.

I had the opportunity of visiting my sister and brother-in-law’s cabin in Idaho this past Au gust. It is nestled in a beautiful part of the country called Chesterfield, Idaho. I promise you, it is like taking a scene out of the Little House On The Prairie series. Rolling hills, no neighbors in view, and a little country town that even has a country mercantile like the Olesons. It was paradise... They have a big country porch that we could sit out on and look out over the rolling hills and valley as far as the eye could see. We had many good front porch conversations during my stay. I even had a turn at some target practice off of their front porch. The deer and moose would come out at night and feed on the distant hills. It was quite the sight to see and I think I could have stayed there forever... Enjoy the next few pages... In the quaint, quiet, pioneer town of Chesterfield, Idaho, they had an old mercantile store named , Holbrook Mercantile. They sold all types of old fashioned candy and drinks including, Sasparilla and I got myself a Huckleberry soda. One of m y favorite areas on this trip was the old pioneer town of Chesterfield, Ida ho. It was settled by Mormon pioneers about 1881 and is a village frozen in time, with stately home made of bricks crafted on the town site, humble log homes, and wood slat houses. The town has been a ghost town for a number of years. Its history encompasses many facets of the old west including the Fur Trade era, famous military explorations, the Oregon Trail all as they were over a hundred years ago. Located on the old Oregon Trail between Soda Springs and Fort Hall, Chesterfield is 11 miles north of Bancroft, Idaho. The town is located near Chesterfield resrvoir and 24 Mile Creek res ervoir. Buildings on the town site, ,fifteen of which are currently undergoing restoration, are avail able for tours. Each Memorial Day, there is a celebration that includes food, an auction and bazaar, and more. During the summer, when the town is open to the public, visitors come from all over the nation and world.

Lava Hot IdahoSprings,
Iloved the little tourist town of Lava Hot Springs! We walked down the the hot springs and you almost feel like you are walking into a Garden of Eden with all of the beautiful greenery, flowers and trees. There is a winding path that takes you down into the springs. There are birds chirping. We were there on a hot summer day. The tem peratures were in the 90’s but it was so cool and shady as we walked to the springs. Lava Hot Springs is located in the mountainous valley of the Portneuf River. The city is a popu lar resort location, noted for its numerous hot springs soaking pools. Bubbling out of natural underground springs, the Lava Hot Springs are laden with minerals and odorless, promising a relaxing, healthy soak. If wild is more your style, take a thrilling inner tube run on the Portneuf Riv er, which is fed by the local hot springs. I was also surprised to see an olympic size pool as you enter the town and it was packed! The swimming complex is the only facility of its kind in the Intermountain West. It has heated indoor and outdoor pools, diving boards and platforms, waterslides, speedslides and a natural hot water spa. Great fun for the whole family and the town has a small town, friendly atmosphere.

Jeni Brunner of Jeni Jo Photography is an equine photographer in central Washington, and travels all over the country photographing horses and the girls that love them. She is a horse girl herself and has been riding since she was 5 years old, showing in the AQHA circuit as a youth. She no longer shows but still owns her retired QH mare, and trail ride on her friend’s horses any chance she gets! About the shoot: When Casey and I first started discussing this shoot, she sent me some inspiration photos showing the style and mood that she was hoping to capture, and immediately Raul Esparza came to mind. He’s a photographer who I’ve admired for quite a while and really love the wardrobe styling that he does for his shoots. I ended up contacting Raul and asked if he’d be will ing to style the shoot for us. Up until that point he had only done styling for his own shoots, so I was very grateful he agreed to this work on this project with Casey and me. The loca tion was some thing I thought of, again, to the western feel of the photos and offer lots of va riety for backgrounds. Lastly, I knew right away who we should contact for hair and makeup- Jessica James is one of the best hair and makeup artists in the DFW area and I knew she’d be able to bring the whole look together with her artistry.
