A Cowgirl’s Voice...

Editor-in-Chief, Susan Gentry

I

t’s Valentine’s time of year which also means, spring is around the corner! So many fun things in this issue!

We are so excited to feature Hobby Horse Clothing Company in this issue of Cowgirls In Style magazine! With all of their various fashion styles for show and casual apparel, it’s hard to choose just one. We have chatted a bit with CEO Kristin Titov, about the company and their fashions. Did you know that the new season of Cowboy Way begins Wednesday, February 5th? It’s already Season 6 and we are excited to see what Booger, Bubba, Cody and wives are up to.

One of the things I love to do is start new businesses and help others start their own so that they can become profitable in the comfort of their own homes and be in control of their time schedules. One business that I tried this past month was Rover. It is a pet sitting service and I wanted to see if it was really worth the time, money and everything else that goes along with it. Check it out! Just for fun, we’ve added a few Valentine’s Day ideas and fashions. Also, check out our Beauty Barn section for some fun Valentine beauty tips for the big day.

16| Cowgirls In Style | FEB/MAR 2020

One of our favorite authors, Shanna Hatfield has a new book out from the Baker City Brides series, ‘Dumplings and Dynamite.’ We have included an excerpt from it. It went on sale, January 23rd. Can’t wait to see you in our next issue which will be our Country Bridal issue! Until then... We hope to see you all on the trail!

Working From Home Are you looking for ways to help with the income at home, or building a new business for yourself that you can do from the comfort of your own home? I’m starting a new series in each issue of CIS Magazine where I will dive into different home businesses and the pros By: Susan Gentry and cons of each idea. We start with Pet Sitting in this issue. Pet Sitting Dog Walking Doggy Day Care Drop-In Visits House Sitting

I didn’t expect a lot going into this. I filled out the application, added some photos and then waited. I made myself available for all of their options except for Pet Sitting, because I didn’t have time to go to people’s homes and take care of their animals for hours.

DOG BOARDING: Housing dogs in my home I was happily surprised that I got my first booking only 48 hours after filling out the application. It was a 1 1/2 year old Treeing Walking Coonhound named Evie. I was to care for Evie for 3 days. But not long after that, I got another person wanting me to care for their Heeler for 6 days, then another booking for a German Shepherd for 5 days and a 3 year old Maltese mix for 3 days. These were all to be done in my home. This was a bit overwhelming for me, so I only took the Coonhound and Maltese mix. I then went into the Rover app and took my availability off of Dog Boarding.

The day came for me to sit Evie. She was a shy, sweet dog who loved to play with our Red Heeler. I was happy to find out she was house trained and she liked to sleep on our bed at night. She was very good and not much of a problem. I found it so sweet that she would jump up on our chair and look out the window longing for her owners every morning and then she would forget about them as she got busy with us in the day. She was a sweetheart.

Dog #1: Evie

26|

The Maltese mix, Winnie was to come the last day of Evie being there. Winnie, was a sweetheart who followed me everywhere. She would not leave my side. If I sat down, she sat right next to me, she also slept on our bed. It became a little chaotic with the two dogs and our dog there for a few hours. Evie became a little loud with a new dog there, so it was a relief to have the owners come. I made $220 for the the 3 days of taking care of two dogs.

PROS: • Both were easy to care for, sweet temperament • Got along well with our dog • Made money while staying at home CONS: • I found my routine was changed because I felt I had to keep an eye on them • I also found that I would worry that something might happen to them while they were gone. • The dogs are there full time

Dog #2: Winnie

DROP IN VISITS: 30 Minute Drop In Visits The Drop In Visits was by far my favorite way to care for the dogs. I got a great job from a woman who was a school teacher and she wanted me to drop in twice a day to check on her puppy, Jett who was a Labradoodle. It was $15/30 minute visit, would gross $30/ day and $600/mth. A great little part time job that gave me a little side money, but I didn’t have to have the dogs full time in my home. Jett was such a cutie. he was a 3 month old Labradoodle who was full of energy and learning to be house trained. I would go in, clean up any mess he might have in his kennel, take him outside and play with him, let him have a potty break and let him eat a little. I did this twice a day and loved it! This was my favorite part of working with Rover. I love the Drop In Visits. I would do this again! PROS: • The dog wasn’t in my home. I could do my job and then be done for the day • Good money for not a lot of work • Get to play with a cute puppy! CONS: • Jett lived 5 miles a way so it was a 10 mile round trip, so 20 miles per day. So you do have gas expens to take into account, but it was well worth it for me because of the money I made.

JETT UPDATE:

One thing to be aware of... Jett’s owner decided that he was too much puppy for her while she was working and asked me if I would like him. Of course I said yes as he is such a cutie and good boy! But I wanted you to be aware that working with Rover, your furry friends might increase. My husband told me I should probably stop my Rover job as we might be overwhelmed with dogs as I am one that cannot say no when it comes to a cute furry friend...

Look for another Home Business adventure in next issue of Cowgirls In Style! Dog #3: Jett

Horse Care

A HORSE THAT IS KEPT OUTDOORS YEAR ROUND NEEDS A LITTLE MORE ATTENTION TO KEEP IT SAFE AND HEALTHY

A

horse is a much bigger commitment than other family pets,. In fact, everything about them is bigger, feeding, veterinary bills, worming not to mention all the accessories that go with them. With the right care and knowledge you can keep your horse happy and healthy. Routine Checks When Caring For Horses Horses which are kept outdoors will require checking at least once a day. If you have poor quality or little pasture you may need to feed twice a day. Horses kept in paddocks/ fields/ pasture have more opportunity to exhibit natural behaviors and so are less likely to develop boredom related behaviors. When you attend to a horse in a paddock/ field/ pasture you should routinely check for injuries and the condition of the paddock i.e. is the fencing broken. Paddock kept horses will be more exposed to the elements so a horse may require extra warmth like a rug/ blanket when it is cold or raining. The hooves should be clean daily to remove dirt and debris and any stones or sticks that may have become wedged under the hoof. The quality and quantity of the plants in the paddock/ field/ pasture may determine how much you need to feed the horse. Pasture which is over run by weeds or poor quality grasses will have little if any nutritional value. Good paddock/ field/ pasture management practices can help to reduce weed growth in a paddock/ field/ pasture. Rotating paddock/field/pasture regularly to avoid over grazing will assist in giving the paddock a “rest” to allow pasture to regrow. Over grazing leads to good, quality pasture being eaten to the point where it doesn’t 30| Cowgirls In Style | FEB/MAR 2020

regrow and leads to weeds setting in. Planting improved pastures is an option, but an expensive one especially if you are keeping your horse on someone else’s land (agisting/ livery/ boarding)! Weeds can be removed by hand if you have time or by regular spraying however horses will need to be kept away from sprayed plant material. Poor Pasture. This paddock contains weeds, little grass and patches of dirt. It also appears a little unsafe due to the wooden rails sticking out.

Checklist When Caring For Horses Having a well-maintained paddock/ field/ pasture will help to prevent unnecessary injury to a horse. Some desirable and safe qualities to look for in a paddock/ field/ pasture are- Well sighted fences (meaning fences that can be easily seen) - Sunny areas - Watering points that if shared by numerous horses, can be accessed by a few at a time. (e.g. not in the corner or confined space) - Shaded areas - Areas which are protected from wind - Strong secure fencing with no sharp or rough edges - Good pasture

Without A Barn

Some undesirable and unsafe qualities are- Holes (e.g. rabbit holes) - Rubbish (e.g. old tyres, timber scraps) - Small gateways (e.g. not big enough for a horse, coming off hinges) - No sun or wind protection - Dirty water (e.g. stagnant creek) - Poor fencing (e.g. loose, flimsy) - Poisonous plants/weeds - Rusty wire - Chemical residue

When you attend to a horse in a paddock/ field/ pasture you should routinely check for injuries and the condition of the paddock i.e. is the fencing broken. Paddock kept horses will be more exposed to the elements so a horse may require extra warmth like a rug/ blanket when it is cold or

raining.

STABLE LIFE The safety considerations to include when working in horse facilities are:- Ensuring no sharp edges on things like walls, fences, feed bins, gateways. - Keep horses separated from spectators, pedestrians and traffic (e.g. fences, signs, Separate entrances for horses & people, traffic officers) - Fences shouldn’t be flimsy or have loose wire the horse can get caught up in. - Gateways need to be wide enough & should swing freely in both directions (i.e. not coming off the hinges) - Walkways should have secure footing that isn’t slippery - Working/exercise areas/arenas need footing that is secure, non-slip and free from holes - Free from dangerous objects - Keep areas well-maintained - Areas used during the night should be well-lit - “No smoking” policies and signs - Regulations banning smoking & the use of naked flames - Check fodder for heat and mould - Appropriate fire extinguishers/hydrants located around facilities - Fire drills, escape routes and procedures in place and accessible for staff and public - Fire breaks around buildings and facilities - In the case of fire, rugs and blankets should be removed from horses Providing Water to Horses Though horses need a great deal of water, they spend very little time drinking, they will usually consume water 2-8 times a day with each time lasting 1-8 minutes. How you provide and supply water to your horse will depend upon your situation. 32| Cowgirls In Style | FEB/MAR 2020

Advantages and disadvantages of some common watering systems - Bath tubs & containers:Bath tubs hold large quantities of water and are good if numerous horses will be accessing the one water source. they are also easy to empty to clean. If using a tub they should be rust free. The disadvantage of bathtubs is that they may be heavy to move and some have sharp edges and corners which have the potential to cause injury. Containers can come in all shapes and sizes and are generally easy to relocate. Rubber ones are softer and may last longer than plastic however they may be easier to knock over. Plastic are also easy to relocate but tend to deteriorate in the sun. - Automatic machines:Automatic waterers save time in that they automatically refill when the water reaches a certain low-level. They are simple to clean as most have an outlet to release stored water. However if the waterer breaks or doesn’t function properly the horse could be without water and it will cost time and sometimes money to repair. If you have one horse and are learning about how to take care of a horse, or are about to start working with horses and need to know about how to take care of horses in a professional environment, horses need their basic needs met. When caring for horses they need food, water, protection from wind, rain and sun as well as company (preferably from other horses). Probably the most important thing to remember when caring for horses is that they need regular checks from humans to monitor their horse care needs!

Whether herding cattle or raising their families, these friends work hard, play hard and face challenges head-on

B

ig changes are coming for the cowboys and their families in season 6 of INSP’s original series, The Cowboy Way. While Bubba, Booger, and Cody have built a strong friendship and success as a company, the cowboys’ day-to-day work schedule and life on the road is taking its toll. With a desire to be home more as their families start to grow, they find their business at a crossroads. Bubba, Booger, and Cody start exploring new ways to expand the company, and each is determined to do it on their own terms. Tensions start to rise as they struggle to see eye-to-eye about what their next move should be. Things get even more complicated when each cowboy is presented with a dream opportunity – leaving them to question if investing in their partnership is 34| Cowgirls In Style | FEB/MAR 2020

what’s best – for themselves and their friendship. As they decide the fate of their future, the cowboys will have to make hard decisions that will put their frienship to the test. Bubba Thompson is a rancher and skilled carpenter. He and wife, Kaley have a fun-loving relationship, often laced with good-humored “bets.” They have a daughter, Andie. Retired pro-rodeo, calf-roping champ, Cody Harris produces popular rodeos. As he works at life on the other side of the arena fence, he is supported by his wife, Misty. They are devoted to each other, often sharing poignant moments and coming together to make those big life decisions. They have a young son, Carter.

Chris “Booger” Brown is an expert cattleman and a renowned horse and dog trainer. When it comes to joking around, he can give as good as he gets, but should a friend or neighbor need his help, the jokes take a back seat, and he’s ready to help in an instant. He is married to Jaclyn, a pharmacist, and is dad—and cowboy mentor—to young son, Matthew. Together the cowboys own Faith Cattle Company. In each episode, you’ll share in Bubba’s, Cody’s and Booger’s emotional stories— the business and life challenges, the accomplishments, the joyful events, the unconditional support, the adventures, and lots of laughs.

Season 6 will premiere on INSP on Wednesday, February 5th at 8PM ET. FEB/MAR 2020 | www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 35

Entertainment

THE CAST

THE COWBOY WAY Booger Brown

Booger grew up on the family farm, and has been a rancher his entire life. He is also an accomplished horseman and renowned horse trainer whose natural instincts allow him to “think like a horse.” Booger has a fun-loving personality and is often quick to joke around with his best buddies. After several “adventures” in dating, including a less than successful online match, Booger met Jaclyn on a blind date arranged by Misty. The couple married in September, 2017. As they start their lives together, Booger settles into his instant family, taking on the role of daddy—and cowboy mentor—to son, Matthew.

Bubba Thompson

In addition to being a rancher, Bubba is also a skilled carpenter, and thanks to time spent working for his father-in-law’s company, he’s become a savvy businessman, as well. In 2012, his charm and traditional values landed him in the runner up spot on a popular southern-style dating show. Over the course of the show, he won the hearts of women across the country with his integrity, manners, and respect for women. In September, 2015, Bubba gave up his bachelor status and married his true love, Kaley. They have a young daughter, Andie.

Cody Harris

Cody is a longtime pro-rodeo, calf-roping competitor, with more than a few championship buckles to his name. He is deeply rooted in rodeo life. Now retired from competition, he keeps his hand in the game as a rodeo producer, including the popular, annual “Bulls on the Beach” rodeo on the Florida-Alabama border in Orange Beach, Alabama. Cody is married to Misty, a champion barrel racer from Mississippi. They have a young son, Carter.

36| Cowgirls In Style | FEB/MAR 2020

THE WIVES Jaclyn Brown

Jaclyn has spent most of her adult life in the south, and has been a pharmacist for the past ten years. One of Jaclyn’s callings in life was to be a mother, and she got her wish in 2014, when Matthew was born. Sadly, her husband, James, passed away a year later. Jaclyn never dreamed of dating a cowboy, but Booger Brown swept her off her feet. Now married, she, Booger and Matthew are starting their lives together as a family.

Kaley Thompson

Kaley may come from a well-established Mississippi family, but she is as downhome, country girl as they come. In fact, when she and Bubba were planning their wedding, she wanted a low-key gathering of family and friends, and Bubba wanted a more extravagant affair. She loves to ride horses, fish, and help out around the ranch. She and Bubba have a daughter, Andie.

Misty Harris

Like her husband, Cody, Misty is well-known on the rodeo circuit. She’s competed in barrel racing almost her entire life, and also knows her way around behind-the-scenes, producing events. She can pull her weight around the farm as well as any hand, and she enjoys it. So after having their son Carter, Misty made a career change. She left her nursing job to start her own business called Full Moon Cattle Company. She is devoted to Cody, family and their way of life.

Or does the danger rest in the fact she’s stolen his heart?

“I’m Mrs. Parrish, the cook,” she said, not meeting his gaze as she handed the gravy bowl to a boy then picked up two platters full of bacon.

That infuriating woman is about to blow his cover!

Widow Hollin Hughes doesn’t care how long it takes or the depths of deception required to discover how her husband really died. She’s determined to unearth the truth and unravel the mystery surrounding his death. Then a new dynamite man arrives at the mine and throws all her plans off kilter. With a smile that makes females of any age swoon, Deputy Seth Harter can charm his way into or out of almost anything. When he’s sent undercover to Crescent Creek Mine, even the cranky cook seems entirely immune to his rugged appeal, making him wonder if he’s losing his touch. Eager to get to the bottom of a series of unexplained deaths, Seth counts on catching the criminals. He just didn’t anticipate a tempestuous woman claiming his heart in the process. Exerp From The Book ...’ “Need some wood?” Seth asked as he walked into the kitchen. The woman glanced up at him in surprise, but quickly recovered. She waggled a gravycoated spoon in the direction of the wood box then went back to scraping gravy into a large bowl. “I’m Seth. Mr. Gilford just hired me,” he said after dumping the wood he carried into the box by the stove. He stuffed his hands in his

“Allow me,” Seth said, taking the platters from her. The woman might have been twenty or fifty. From her stringy hair, rumpled dress, and bedraggled petticoat hanging an inch below her skir t hem, she looked rather unkempt, but she smelled clean and her eyes were bright. In fact, they were an unusual shade somewhere between gray and green that made him think of the sagebrush that grew so prevalent to the south and east of Baker City. In spite of circles beneath her eyes and smudges of flour on her cheeks, her skin was smooth, without the wrinkles age brings, and dusted with a generous helping of freckles. He glimpsed her hands. Although rough and red from hard work, they looked young, almost delicate. Yet, the woman moved slightly humped over with the hint of a limp and when she smiled at him, he couldn’t miss the absence of her two front teeth. He stepped back and followed the boys out to the dining area, setting the platters on the table. Something about the woman bothered him and it had nothing to do with the lack of teeth. If he was a gambling man, he’d bet she was hiding something. He had a feeling Mrs. Parrish was not at all what she seemed. Go to amazon.com to purchase this book and find more of Shanna’s books.
