hat a wonderful time of year! Not only are the holidays almost upon us, but it’s time for the world’s greatest rodeo; the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada! We have included some fashion ideas for those nights in Las Vegas. Also, we have included a Gift Section for not only Christmas, but gifts that will be appropriate for Valentine’s Day, Birthdays and any time of the year. We are excited to feature both Paige Nicholson, Miss Rodeo America 2014 and also Country Music Artist, Lee Ann Womack in this issue. Paige will be ending her reign as Miss Rodeo America and you can see it all happen in Vegas. We have included the schedule. We are also thrilled about Lee Ann Womack’s new album, The Way I’m Livin’. With its classic country sound, Lee Ann is back and we couldn’t be happier. It’s time for another Cowgirl Fit Challenge. The first challenge was a great success with women losing close to 11 inches in only 40 days! The new challenge will begin January 5th and will run for 40 days. We will team up each person so that they will have a fitness buddy to help them along the way. There will also be prizes, including boots from Stetson for the winners! Check it out. We want to thank you all for making us what we are today. We would not be here without you. We love our readers and hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays! ooking through the internet, we bumped into this little blog that we loved! Full of horse training tips, and a look at the life of a cowgirl, we thought you might enjoy it. Here is a brief introduction... “I was born on a cattle ranch in the middle of the Sandhills of Nebraska. Horseback by the age of five and helping with the daily cattle work, I had a hunger to learn about training horses and an all-encompassing desire to have my own horse someday. The horses I grew up with shaped me and taught me, and the patience and respect they gave to me is something I have always wanted to give back.
12 | Cowgirls In Style | Fall/Winter 2014
This horse blog is the perfect venue to share my stories of growing up on a horse ranch, the horse training knowledge I acquired, the individual horses I’ve known and loved, and the work and progress I’m making with the ones I own now. So while I have never worn a cowboy hat, and my first pair of spurs have been hanging in a dusty tack room for the last fifteen years, I have made it my life goal to get to know horses, and the hours I’ve spent riding are the most well-invested moments of my life. I am a cowgirl.” Check them out at:

LEE ANN WOMACK
With a classic, traditional country sound, lee ann womack’s new album, “The way i’m livin’” is sure to please . This album has a little more meaning for Womack since it is her first release without a

t may have been seven years since Lee Ann Womack put out a record, but she’s – as The Wall Street Journal noted when they debuted “The Way I’m Livin’” earlier this summer. Produced by Womack’s husband, Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Chris Knight, Pistol Annies), the roots writer collection takes life at its most unvarnished and splintered – attracting those who lament the passage of the ‘tough stuff’ from the genre. “The response is a little amazing,” Womack says. “Frank and I made a record of the songs we love… with players who really went deep to match my singing, the emotions I wanted…and we didn’t think about radio or marketing or anything. We just did this move us. You can’t second guess other people, but it sure feels good knowing other people share our hunger for this music too, because it’s definitely grown up country.”
16 | Cowgirls In Style | Fall/Winter 2014
In a world of faster, harder, louder, Lee Ann Womack wants something far more radical; to be real. Strip it all away, get to the core of life, love and raw emotion - and you find songs that distill it all to the stopping power of a hollow point bullet. “It just seems like music when it is most powerful hits you right between the eyes,” says the Grammy-winning vocalist who has been singled out for “the clarity of a soul that realizes loss is a form of purification, a scraping away of false ideals and excess emotional baggage: by TIME Magazine. “Some of these songs are hard truths, tough moments, places you’d rather not be, but you know, life takes you to those places sometimes.” Certainly The Way I’m Livin’, produced by Frank Liddell, is an unvarnished collection of songs by some of America’s most progressive songwriter/artists. The track, “Fly” written by Brett Cobb, came from the loss of a family friend his sister grew up with. Two weeks before they graduated high school, she became ill with Spinal Meningitis and passed. I couldn’t find the words to console my sister. Writing was the only way I could get the feelings out. “All His Saints” came from a hope... “A yearning to believe in something greater, something that gave me hope that struggles are temporary, that there is a brighter light, a ‘kingdom’ to be experienced in the here and now... not just in the afterlife.” Writes composer Mindy Smith. The song, “The Way I’m Livin’, written by Adam Wright, is a gospel type song. We all struggle with spirituality in some way at some point in our lives. Light and darkness, right and wrong, guilt and forgiveness are heavy themes we all deal with. In a way , Lee Ann delivers it with that kind of urgency, like her soul is on the line. “Chances Are: written by Hayes Carll, was written in a his hotel one night. “One of those times where I was determined not to go to bed until I had it done. I guess it comes across as a pretty sad country song, but to me there is optimism and determination. Maybe things haven’t always worked out for the narrator, and she’s well aware of all the wrong turns she’s taken, but at the end of the day there is still a chance at finding love. It’s not about giving up, it’s about hope.” 18 | Cowgirls In Style | Fall/Winter 2014
“Sleeping with the Devil” by Brennen Leigh, was written in 2008. It’s a song about substance abuse. The devil plays the part of the bottle in the song. He’s the bad guy from whom you just can’t stay away. “Out on the Weekend” was written by Lee Ann herself. “Frank and I had just started dating, and we were on a road trip. It was late, and I was sleepy. He was playing me this record that had been really important to him, and I didn’t know it. But I remember hearing this song, and thinking, “Well, I could do that...” It was something I thought I could grass up a bit. Lee Ann’s husband, Frank Liddell says, “Tomorrow Night In Baltimore... I never know where my wife finds songs! She is ridiculous... She stays up all night, trolling the internet. We have so much old vinyl in our house. She knows more songwriters than I do. We were looking for something interesting with

tempo. We just wanted to shake things up at the end of the day. She went off to her computer and came back with this. It’s an old, old Roger Miller song, like a Top 10 hit from 1971 or 1972 by Kenny Price. I think Waylon cut it too, but who finds or remembers this stuff? Lee Ann. And the band had so much fun when we cut it. The thing about my wife,” says Liddell, “is she’s such a great singer, it’s easy to have her sing and go, ‘Wow!’ But there’s so much more inside her, so much heart and vibrance, really complicated stuff that she can translate into the notes - it’s not just the licks, it’s the conflict, the hurt, the haunt that kills me about her singing. To go that deep with her in the studio, well, it’s a whole other kind of vocal.” -Quietly, over two three-day stints in a nondescript studio, they did. Using garbage cans for percussion, Aubrey Haney’s shining fiddle and the sort of reverence players bring in the presence of greatness, The Way I’m Livin’ was born. “To see how far a song can take a feeling,” Womack says, “is one of the
most thrilling things I can do as a singer. In my career, I’ve been blessed to do many great songs, work with incredible musicians and deep inside I always ask, ‘How far could I go?’ When Frank and I started, that’s what we wanted to find out... to seek.” “One of the differences, and I didn’t even realize ‘til we were putting the credits together, “ Womack offers, “is every song came from a songwriter artist. They weren’t writing for cuts. They were writing stories they wanted to tell, pictures they needed to paint, maybe even emotions they had to exorcise. There isn’t a song here written to be ‘a hit,’ but more to hit you straight in the heart.” Unlikely songs in today’s twodimensional world of tailgates, cold beers, hot clubs and hooking up, The Way I’m Livin’ proves to be more real; written for the jagged shards of life’s rugged spots, turned over with some of the best melodies you’ll hear. Not fancy, big or glossy, but man, these songs will take your breath away. (Courtesy of Sugar Hill Records)

believe families should always look out for each other, and that developing and educating the next generation is our greatest responsibility in life. Miss Rodeo America is an outstanding example of a young lady, a cowgirl, and a person who is strong in character. It is my wish that each person I meet becomes a true rodeo fan, and that I can tell the story of agriculture and the western way of life with knowledge and enthusiasm.

“My favorite part (of MRA Queen) is being in a position to inspire and influence other young women. It’s a big responsibility to have people looking up to you, so that drives me to be a better person.” -Paige Nicholson Cowgirls In Style: Where are you from? Paige Nicholson: I’m from Lawrence, a small agricultural community in central Mississippi. My family raises corn, soybeans, and commercial beef cattle. I loved growing up on the farm, I never want to live anywhere else. CIS: Have you ridden horses all of your life? PN: Yes, I was too young to remember my first ride, I can’t imagine life without horses. My mom was a barrel racer and my paternal grandmother is a lifelong horsewoman, so it was natural that I loved riding from a young age. CIS: How old were you when you entered your first rodeo pageant? PN: Miss Mississippi High School Rodeo 2007 was my first contest, I was fifteen and the only contestant. After that I held the titles Miss Rodeo Mississippi Teen 2009, Miss Dixie National Rodeo 2011, and Miss Rodeo Mississippi 2013. CIS: What do you think is the hardest part of the competition? PN: Just putting yourself out there. When entering a pageant you allow yourself to be judged, and you are often put on the spot in front of a crowd. Those are tough situations.
CIS: What has the past year been like? What is your favorite part of being the reigning MRA? Any experiences you would like to relate? PN: It’s been an unbelievable experience. It’s really busy, but really fun. I travel a lot and have gotten to see every corner of our country and meet some really special people. My favorite part is being in a position to inspire and influence other young women. It’s a big responsibility to have people looking up to you, so that drives me to be a better person. CIS: What is your favorite thing to do when you come home from a busy week? PN: Play with my dog, Bandit, and ride my horse, Whiskey! I miss them when I’m on the road, so I spend as much time with them as I can when I’m home. CIS: What is your favorite style of clothing to wear? Are you more a jeans, t-shirt/boots person or dress up, etc... PN: Wranglers and Justins are pretty much the standard for me. That’s what you’ll catch me in most days. I always like to look neat and put together, but I’m not a frilly dresser. I really like western pieces like boot rugs and vests, or anything with fringe! I love unique accessories like hats, and statement jewelry.

“Work towards improving yourself as a person, rather than working for a title... ” ~Paige Nicholson
CIS: What are your hobbies, interests outside of rodeo? PN: My whole life has centered around rodeo for so long! Nearly everything that interests me has to do with rodeo or agriculture. CIS: What are your plans after your reign is over? PN: Start a career! I already finished my Bachelors at MSU, and my Miss Rodeo America scholarships paid my student loans in full. I’m ready to use the connections I’ve made as MRA to find a job that lets me continue to be involved in the western lifestyle.
Courtesy of Paige Nicholson
“Don’t let your nerves take all the fun out of pageants... ”
CIS: What advice would you give girls who are wanting to get involved in rodeo pageantry? PN: Work towards improving yourself as a person, rather than working for a title. Commit each day to becoming a better version of yourself, which means becoming a better horseman, and practicing public speaking as much as possible. There is no substitute for studying. You absolutely have to know about the sport you’re going to be promoting. Use pageant prep as a chance to become a better version of yourself. And truly enjoy it. Don’t let your nerves take all the fun out of pageants. They are a great way to build relationships that will benefit you your whole life.

The Western Wanderer Wandering Into Bannack Ghost Town Written By: Cort Flynn
When the gold ran out and the mines died, so did the town, but you can spend a day there and remember the happenings of the old west in Bannack.
W
andering back into the big sky country of Montana we found a fun little ghost town full of history and beautiful old buildings. Bannack is a state park in Montana named after the Bannock Indians of the area. It seems that when the name of the town was applied for, a spelling error occurred somewhere along the line with the a and the o, thus the the name Bannack.
48 | Cowgirls In Style | Fall/Winter 2014
Gold was discovered on Grasshopper Creek in1862 which runs through the town, that set off a gold rush to the area Gold was discovered on Grasshopper Creek in 1862 which runs through the town, that set off a gold rush to the area. Many of the California 49’ers headed to Bannack swelling the town to over 3000 by the next year. It became the territorial capital of Montana full of saloons, the area’s first hotel, a jail, Masonic Lodge and sawmill, among much more. Many of the old buildings remain and can be wandered through at your leisure. With all the growth, gold, and lawlessness a lawman was needed. The town hired a young man that claimed to have experience with the law. Unfortunately, it was from the wrong side of the law in the California gold fields. Henry Plummer did enforce the law, build a jail and a gallows for those that broke his law. However, for a time he became the secret leader of a gang of robbers and killers that would rob the miners and bury the stolen gold around the area, much of which is still believed to be there. It is said that over 100 men were murdered by his gang. Henry was eventually found out and was hanged from his very own gallows. When a strange illness hit the area, a children’s quarantine hospital was built. Many children died in the building and some people claim they can still hear the cries and moans of children coming from the building late at night. When the gold ran out and the mines died, so did the town, but you can spend a day there and remember the happenings of the old west in Bannack. If you go you can get to the town west of I-15 about 17 miles on highway 278. It is southwest of Dillon about 26 miles. If you are camping, Bannack has a nice campground. So grab your boots and head out to Bannack, just one of the many fascinating spots of the old west.
