Wild Instincts Story twin sisters, Cheryl Sikes and Caryl Wilson, custom designs reflect their cowgirl way of life which keeps the old west culture alive. 28 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2017-February 2018

Come see us at our Cowboy Christmas Booth #3506

W

ild Instincts story began before birth, born twins and always best friends, Cheryl and Caryl grew up on a Midwest farm as 4th generation cowgirls. They enjoyed the free and easy childhood with plenty of animals and outdoor activities. Growing up in the Midwest, just 23 miles from the Lakota Sioux reservation, they developed a deep appreciation for the beautiful bead work and traditional dress of the Lakota people. Living in this area as children they not only loved the wide open countryside and animals, but the freedom to play and dream of the history that surrounded them. Their desire to create their leather clothing was prompted by the loss of a daughter, Alison, at the age of 32. They both felt the emptiness from Alison’s death and needed an outlet for their grief. A fat Boy Harley Davidson motorcycle was the answer, they thought! After purchasing their bikes they discovered that most of the leather clothing was made for men… that is when they started designing their own cloth-

Twin Sisters and founders of Wild Instincts Cheryl Sikes and Cheryl Wilson ing. Their first design was elk ½ chaps, of course with bling! Their Harley girlfriends started ordering chaps, vests and loop bags to wear while riding and they just kept adding pieces to their list of designs. Although they still ride their bikes, their first love was and will always be horses. Wild Instincts uses Fallow deer leather, a European deer that was treasured by the nobles not only for the meat but the durability and softness of the leather. For the past 6 years they have designed unique patterns for dusters, vests, skirts, dresses, chaps and bags. The suppleness of this beautiful leather inspires their designs and creates a one of a kind item that can be enjoyed by everyone who loves to be different from the rest. Recently they added a line of unique sterling silver jewelry and one of a kind semi-precious jewelry. All silver and turquoise jewelry is made by our Master Silversmith, Steve Howard. Wild Instincts respect other artists and feel strongly that all artists should be recognized for their own work. Wild Instincts adopted the American Bison as their logo in honor of the American Bison being named the national mammal. *View some of their fashions on pages 52-55. www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 29

Five Easy Tips On How To Buy The Right Horse By: Dean Erickson

With different holidays approaching, many are looking for a horse or pony for sale. Here are some tips to get you started.

B

uying a horse is a big event. There are so many important things to consider that an impulsive buy is out of the question. Any would-be equine owner must think about things like finding an appropriate boarding stable and purchasing all the correct equipment you may need. You should seek out other horse owners and speak to them.

1

Be responsible for your purchase. Investigate what you are buying and who you are buying from. It’s better to buy from people who are in the business and have lots of horses to choose from. If you aren’t an experience buyer it’s too risky to buy from a private individual. Get to know the horse’s current owners. Ask for references. Speak to others who’ve bought horses from the same sellers. Talk to those who run boarding farms. What do they know? Come Home to Heartland Photo: Shawn Turner

A series for all ages, now in its 11th season we go behind the scenes of the long loved television series, Heartland with lead actress, Amber Marshall 36 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2017-February 2018

Heartland is a weekly family drama that follows sisters, Amy and Lou Fleming and their Grandfather Jack on their Heartland Ranch By: Susan Gentry Photos: Shawn Turner and Andrew Bako

I

remember growing up looking forward to my favorite prime time television series that would air every Monday night. For me, it was Little House on the Prairie. My family and I would gather around the television in anticipation of the beloved family series. I have not had a favorite television series that catered to the whole family since. Now that I am a wife and mother, I have looked for a series such as the one I grew up with in the 70’s and 80’s as a little girl.

Graham Wardle and Amber Marshall playing new parents on set of Season 11

Heartland is that series for me. I happened upon it last May as my family and I were looking for a new television series to start. I had heard about Heartland, but had never actually watched it. I didn’t know what I was missing. Our whole family loves the series and after telling many friends, they are hooked as well. Just to give you fair warning, it is addicting! As stated on the CBC website, this weekly drama is set against the stunning vistas of the Alberta Rocky Mountains. Heartland is a family drama that follows sisters, Amy and Lou Fleming and their grandfather Jack, through the highs and lows of life on a horse ranch. The series stems from the Heartland book series by Lauren Brooke. In the following pages, we feature one of the finest family dramas on television today.

Heartland

The

Amber Marshall Amber plays the role of Amy on the Heartland series. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she becomes the miracle girl horse whisperer. Her life is filled with horses, and her love for Ty Borden.

Shaun Johnston Shaun plays the beloved Grandpa Jack on the series. He is the patriarch of the family and along with his granddaughters, enjoys life on their horse ranch.

Chris Potter Chris plays Tim, protective father of Amy and Lou. He tries to make up for lost time in the absence he created while they were young. His fun loving personality make him one of our favorites on the show.

Kerry James Kerry plays Caleb on the series. He comes to Heartland as a down on his luck ranch hand. He has a bit of trouble in the romance department but makes up for it on the rodeo circuit.

Nathaniel Arcand Nathaniel plays Scott, the veterinariran and friend of the family. He has had a past relationship with Lou and plays an integral part in the show.

Cast Graham Wardle Graham plays Ty Borden on the series Heartland. Coming from a troubled home, Ty finds hope, love and family at Heartland. His relationship with Amy also brings a love for animals as well.

Michelle Morgan Michelle plays Lou, the older sister of Amy and an energetic entrepreneur. She’s had a few ups and downs in her love life and tries to balance family and work.

Alisha Newton Alisha plays Georgie, a once troubled orphan who is adopted by Lou and Peter. She becomes a loved cast member of the show. She quickly falls in love with the equestrian lifestyle that is paramount to Heartland.

Jessica Steen Jessica plays Lisa. She is an independent woman who falls in love with Jack. Not only does she manage her equestrian estate, she also is working on a growing relationship with Jack and his girls.

Gabriel Hogan Gabriel plays Peter, Lou’s ex-husband on the show. With his tireless work ethic, he can sometimes choose work over family. He is a loving father that tries to make the best of the situation.

Q’s & A’s with Amber Marshall Amber Marshall

CIS: We noticed you are now a producer. How has your role changed with that? Do you get more input with the stories? AM: I like to think I was doing much of this work prior to being credited with the label. Basically, I act as the horse story monitor and make sure the stories we are telling are as honest to real life as we can get. The writers do a fabulous job of researching, but none have ever lived or worked on a ranch. Therefore, sometimes stories need to be formed a little into more of a real-life Alberta Ranch plot. I attend the pre-production meetings, meet with the wranglers and writers and help mould each equine character into a believable one.

and fashions? AM: My 9th grade closet... My mother is constantly saying to me, “um Amber... didn’t I buy that for you in High School?” The truth is... I don’t like shopping. I avoid it at all cost. The clothes you find in my closet have ost likely been there many years and were probably gifts I do buy jeans & boots... that’s the one thing I seem to wear holes in... so every 2 years I actually have to acquire more... CIS: Do you go to the NFR in Vegas? Will you be there this year? AM: Yes, my husband and I try to get down to the NFR every year. It’s a nice post-Heartland Season wrap trip for us. Plus... that’s usually where I get my jeans and boots! ;)

CIS: Amy brings a lot of fashion to the show. What are Amber’s favorite styles

Miss Rodeo America 2017 Lisa Lageschaar As the 2017 reign of Miss Rodeo America, Lisa Lageschaar comes to an end, CIS Magazine gets some q’s & A’s behind the scenes

By: Susan Gentry Hair & Makeup: Judy Wright Photos: Las Vegas Image Studio 44 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2017-February 2018

CIS

Q’s & A’s

Cowgirls In Style Magazine: Where are you from? Lisa Lageschaar: A tiny little town called Pickton in northeast Texas CIS: How many horses do you have and have you ridden horses all of your life? LL: I currently have one horse--Biscuit, my head horse--a palomino Quarter Horse gelding. We also have a palomino miniature horse on our dairy farm named George, but he really belongs to my mom. I’ve ridden since I was five and sat on my first horse when I was two. I’ve never had just one horse, but everything worked out perfectly for my year as Miss Rodeo America! No one else in my family rides, and my parents have plenty on their hands with just having to take care of Biscuit this year. I plan to buy a new barrel horse as soon as I’m able to this winter! CIS: How old were you when you entered your first rodeo pageant? LL: I was fourteen years old when I competed in my first rodeo queen contest. I find it hard to believe that was eleven years ago because I feel like I was fourteen years old and decided to run for Winnsboro Rodeo Association Junior Queen just yesterday! CIS: What is the hardest part of the competition? LL: The hardest part of competing in the Miss Rodeo America pageant, for me, was functioning on little to no sleep (even though it’s preparation for the busy schedule Miss Rodeo America has once she wins). I had practiced and mentally prepared for every part of the competition: interviews, public speaking, rodeo knowledge, equine science, horsemanship, modeling and stage presence, and even my wardrobe. I’m not sure anything can prepare a person for the lack of sleep during that week though. Being around such a wonderful group of beautiful, like-minded women definitely made the week fly by! It was one of the best weeks of my life! CIS: What has the past year been like? What is your favorite part of being the reigning MRA? Any experiences you would like to relate?

Know that for every setback, God has a major comeback. Problems are not stop signs; they are guidelines. Listen to God and trust him because “A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 -Lisa Lageschaar

LL: This past year has been a whirlwind; it’s been nothing short of a dream come true! I’ve traveled North America representing and promoting what I love--rodeo. My absolute favorite part of being Miss Rodeo America is all of the people I’ve been able to meet, get to know, and spend time with this year. Every single person has made an impact on my life and I’m thankful to have been given the opportunity to meet so many incredible individuals! I’ve traveled to some amazing places across the country, but one very special appearance was attending Rodeo Austin. I served as Miss Rodeo Austin in 2014 and Miss Rodeo America never attends Rodeo Austin, but they booked me to come and the Miss Rodeo America office manager was able to make it work that I attend for four days. I loved getting to come back “home” to Rodeo Austin in March! CIS: What is your favorite thing to do when you come home from a busy week? LL: There weren’t many days spent at home this year, but my favorite thing to do is spend time with my family and saddle up my horse Biscuit to go on a relaxing ride. I’ve ridden over sixty American Quarter Horses this year, but there is nothing like riding my own horse. You’ll often find me in the arena roping steers and just enjoying being home when I have time off. CIS: What is your favorite style of clothing to wear? Are you more a jeans, t-shirt/boots girl or dress up? LL: I love western fashion and all the options available in the western clothing industry! Nothing beats a good pair of Wrangler jeans, a fun tee, cute cardigan or duster, booties, and western jewelry. I would say my style is western chic. I love to layer on jewelry, but like to be comfortable, while keeping a traditional, modest western style. CIS: What are your hobbies, interests outside of rodeo? LL: This question makes me smile because my first 46 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2017-February 2018

thought was, “none, I have no hobbies outside of rodeo.” This statement is partially true; you will find me riding my horses at a rodeo, barrel race or team roping any time I’m able. My other passion is education. I have finished school up to my masters degree and taught high school agriculture for a year before I won Miss Rodeo Texas and then Miss Rodeo America. I am always studying and learning about the agriculture and western industries even when I’m not in school. I will begin my doctoral work after my year as Miss Rodeo America and should be able to graduate completely debt free thanks to the Miss Rodeo America Scholarship Foundation! CIS: What are your plans after your reign is over? LL: I will go back to teaching high school agriculture and obtain my doctorate degree because I would ultimately like to become a college professor. This career would be perfect to allow me to continue to rodeo, and if the right horse comes along I have the goal to run down the alley way of the Thomas and Mack on a barrel horse and not just a black flag horse. CIS: What advice would you give girls who are wanting to get involved in rodeo pageantry? LL: If something is placed on your heart and in your mind it’s there for a reason. My advice to every one is with faith and hard work anything is possible! Everything worth having is worth working for. Set goals by starting at the top and create a plan from the top to where you currently are, and work your way up to your goal. Surround yourself with the believers, the doers and the thinkers and with people who have expertise in not only rodeo queening, but in the equine industry and rodeo. Even though we plan to achieve our goals, we will face setbacks. Know that for every setback, God has a major comeback. Problems are not stop signs; they are guidelines. Listen to God and trust him because “A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
