The Last Cowboys By John Branch
The Last Cowboys is a riviting saga of the rodeo Wright family. The subtitle says it all, “A Pioneer Family In The New West.” Prize-winning, best-selling New York Times report er, John Branch gives a real life portrayal of the soul, sacrifice and hard work of the world-champion saddle bronc riding family. This book depicts the brawn and skill that it takes to survive as ranchers and cowboys in modern times. The Wrights, from southern Utah, have had generations of world-champion winners in the rodeo arena. Patriarch and father, Bill and mother, Evelyn Wright teach their family at a young age starting with oldest son Cody, a two-time world champion saddle bronc rider and his brothers and sisters the ethic and backbreaking work to persevere in a fading age of ranch survival. Branch also takes us behind the scenes as some of the younger generation Wrights, Rusty, Ryder and Stetson compete in the exciting, but somestimes grim world of rodeo competition. The Last Cowboys is a tender and authentic written book that paints the picture of a family that lives life to its fullest. You will laugh, cry and hold onto your seats as you go through branding season, rodeo fortune and and mishaps and the celebration of modern day cowboys holding on to keep the western lifestyle alive. I think you will find this book a great read! 22 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2018/January 2019
4-In-1Blanket By Noble Outfitters
I love the idea of the 4-in-1 Turnout System from Noble Outfitters. I have been wanting to try it out for some time now. I live in the desert and the winter days range from the cool 50’s and then can become windy and drizzly and then can even get in the low 20’s to below zero in some years. What makes the 4-in1 Blanket so great is there are a total of four weight variations. You can simply unzip the shell and insert up to two weights to suite your horse’s needs. The shell is the perfect weight for those cool days where there might also be alittle drizzel. Then you can zip in another two layers when the weather gets cold for snow and below freezing. My horse also seems to love it and it fits just right.
I would definately recommend this blanket. It’s like having four blankets, but only paying for one, and the price is only $199. No matter the climate of where you live, your horse will love this blanket and so will you!

Deep Skin Tones
If you’ve got a porcelain complexion, go for bluebased reds. Stay away from warmer, orangey colors if you have cool undertones.
You’ve got a lot of versatility here. Almost any pink, from reddish to fuchsia, will suit medium skin tones nicely. Stick with orangey reds and cherry reds to complement your golden undertones.
Bright berry shades — really, most bright shades — pop beautifully against darker skin. You can go in any number of directions here, whether you try a magenta, violet, or even tangerine. Try them all! In the crimson family, go for berry reds or chocolaty reds to perfect your bold lip.

If you don’t have enough time to tack up, get that halter on your horse and go for a 10 minute jog running beside your horse. Not only will that allow you to get out into some fresh winter air, but your horse will thank you for it. Even a 10 minute brisk jog will get your blood flowing and calories burning. Brittany PozziTonozzi
CIS Cover Girl, Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi talks family, barrel racing and fashion
Q’s & A’s CIS Magazine: When did you start barrel racing? Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi: I started barrel racing when I was about 13. My family didn’t have horses and I wasn’t raised with them. I wanted one so bad that I finally wore my parents down to get me a horse. My first horse did not run the barrels and we shortly realized that we were going to need something else. My second horse did run barrels and that’s when I became addicted . CIS: How did you and Garrett meet? BPT: Garrett and I have known each for a long time, 10 years before we started dating to be exact. He was a party guy and liked to have fun and I remember always thinking that he was way to wild for me. I guess we all grew up and realized how perfect we were for each other. CIS: You have a beautiful family. Tell us how the past few years have been, being a wife and mother? BPT: It’s been wonderful, crazy, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Yes there are tough days when you need a little break, but I have an amazing husband and family that are always there to lend a hand. CIS: How has it made your life different when it comes to barrel racing? BPT: I do have help now where I used to just do it all on my own. I decided that help is a must to get everything accomplished and to give Tinlee and the horses the care that they need. CIS: What is your fashion style? Any favorite styles you like to wear? BPT: I have a very plain style.... You will always see me in my Stetson jeans and a pair of boots. Most Easy horses never days I am in a Tshirt but I also make it great, and
do wear a lot of button down collared shirts and lots of denim. When I go out, I like to wear jackets and fun boots that are also Stetson. CIS: What horses will you use in the NFR? BPT: I am planning on taking Duke - Yeah, Hes Firen, Birdie- Babe on the chase, Steeley-Steele Magnolias, and Katniss- Ima Famous Babe. CIS: Favorite things to do with your downtime when you aren’t competing? BPT: When is that? LOL! We like to go to movies, Broncos games, and a beach vacation. CIS: What is your training schedule like with your horses? How do you keep your horses fresh and ready for the NFR? BPT: I’m going to run my horses selectively before the finals and just try to keep them sound and happy. I feel like you can get too wrapped up in getting them prepared and show up to Vegas with tired horses. CIS: What would you tell younger barrel racers growing up who one day have a dream of competing in the WNFR? BPT: Work hard!! A lot of girls want it but very few will put in the time and the work that it takes to get to the WNFR and finding someone that has done it to help you is key. There are a lot of little things that only people that have gone up and down the road know.

World Champion Barrel Racer
NELLIE MILLER Photos by: Christy Burleson
2017 WOrld Champion, nellie Miller takes a minute to talk to CIS Magazine Q’s & A’s CIS Magazine: When did you start barrel racing? Nellie Miller: I grew up around horses my family rodeoed during my whole childhood, I rode as a child however I didn’t show much interest in barrel racing or competing until I was about twelve years old. I started riding a mare we called Reba and she was as honest as the day is long. I started winning on her and I got hooked and the rest is history.
NM: I have A LOT of help. I really lean on people and it has been the best experience for our family. We all became closer and we really rely on each other now. We make it work through teamwork I certainly wouldn’t be as successful without a crew of people to help me and it wouldn’t be as rewarding either. I love sharing this experience with my family and friends.
CIS: What was it like the minute you found out you had made it to the NFR the first time? NM: I was sitting on the victory lap horse in the ally and I knew I had won the average then a guy came running over to me and told me I won the world right before I took off for the victory lap. Honestly I couldn’t believe it, it was kind of a surreal moment because I’m not sure I really ever thought that it would happen. At that moment I didn’t have time to think it through I was just going through the motions. The gravity of it didn’t hit me until all the commotion was over.
CIS: What is your fashion style? NM: I love fashion however I don’t feel like I am that good at it so I try to just keep my look simple and wear things I feel comfortable in. When I am comfortable I feel confident and I think that is the best look. I like to get inspiration from all of the fashion blogs but then I usually just simplify the look to fit my style. Right now I love all the vintage styles and I wear a lot of Wranglers denim shirts to ride in. It seems like you can mold denim into any style that fits you and it is practical for what I am doing every day.
CIS: This all has to be grueling. How do you keep it all together? 40 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2018/January 2019
CIS: How many rodeos will you be competing in this year? NM: This year I competed at 30 rodeos. It is the least amount of rodeos that I have ever went to which has been nice because I was able to go home more than usual. Not every year looks like this one. Some years you will have to travel more, but we got off to a good start in the beginning of the year so it allowed me to pick and choose a little more than usual.
downtime is meant to be restful and when you are on the go like we are you appreciate the time at home to regroup.
CIS: How do you keep your horses fresh and ready for the NFR? NM: My horses get a lot of riding even when we aren’t going as much because I want them to stay in good shape. In the couple of months before the NFR I am still riding every day and I will probably go to a handful of races to keep my horses in running shape. Q’s & A’s
Cowgirls In Style Magazine: Where are you from?
Keri Sheffield: I am from the small town of Summerfield, Florida where I grew up on 30 acres of land, full of animals, on the harbor of beautiful Lake Weir. CIS: How many horses do you have and have you ridden horses all of your life? KS: I began participating in rodeo at the age of six with the Southern Junior Rodeo Association, so I have been riding for most of my life. I now own one American Quarter Horse named Chickbo, who is an 18 year old sorrel horse; I competed on her throughout my entire high school rodeo career. (Our best event was goat tying!) CIS: How old were you when you entered your first rodeo pageant? KS: I ran for a junior rodeo queen title in 2005, which means I was 12 when I first started! Once in high school, I competed again and won the title of Florida High School Rodeo Queen from 2010-2011, which gave me the opportunity to compete at the National High School Rodeo Finals where I placed in the top ten. I’ve spent a lot of time preparing for and competing in rodeo pageants and have loved every minute of it. CIS: What is the hardest part of the competition? KS: I believe the hardest part of the competition is making sure to not get too worn down. The Miss Rodeo America Pageant is eight full, long days with early mornings and late nights. My saving grace was the 30 other women with whom I competed. We kept each other motivated, encouraged, and laughing. Everyone had a positive attitude, and their love and support gave me the energy to keep pushing through. CIS: What has the past year been like? What is your favorite part of being the reigning MRA? Any experiences you would like to relate? KS: It is almost impossible to put into words how incredible this past year has been. It has been busy and unforgettable. the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Carrying the American flag and promoting rodeo across the nation (and beyond in Australia and Canada) is a special honor. I’ve met amazing people, spent time with incredible MRA sponsors, modeled in fun photo shoots, visited hospitals and schools, and taken part in awesome rodeos in a variety of different settings. Rodeo has shaped me into the woman I am today, and I’ve cherished the opportunity to be able to give a little back to the sport I love over the past 365 days. There is nothing like being home, being comfortable, and being with your family. CIS: What is your favorite style of clothing to wear? Are you more a jeans, t-shirt/boots girl or dress up? KS: am most definitely a “jeans, t-shirt, and boots
girl” through and through! My favorite style of jeans right now, both in and outside of the rodeo arena, is the Wrangler Retro Mae Wide Leg Jean. CIS: What are your hobbies, interests outside of rodeo? KS: I enjoy anything and everything outdoors! I love to go fishing, hunting, hiking, and boating on the lake. I love spending time with my friends and family, going to the games and recitals of my six nieces and nephews. I also enjoy a really good book! As Miss Rodeo America, I spend a good amount of time on planes and have probably read at least two books a month this year. CIS: What are your plans after your reign is over? KS: After my reign as Miss Rodeo America is over, I plan to go back to work full time as an Intensive Care Unit nurse and then apply for a doctoral program the following year. My ultimate goal is to become a nurse anesthetist and serve others both in the United States and in third world countries.

About Designer Meredith Lockhart
W
hen I was a child, I could hardly wait for Christmas to see what kind of clothes my mother had made for my dolls. I think that was the beginning of my interest in sewing and design. These were beautifully hand water colored dolls with these wonderful dresses that dated from the late 1800’s thru the 30’s. When I was in the seventh grade, I made my first dress that I could wear to school, and my teachers complimented me on it and I was hooked! The Inspiration for Meredith’s designs comes from the love of the western culture. She has had horses since she was a teenager. She married a farmer and lives where she is surrounded by horses, cattle and beautiful countryside. Yes, Kansas is not all flat with wheat fields for miles and miles. Embellishment ideas come from the rodeo queen wear and she adds them to the accessories. She strives to make a high quality product and likes creating things that women feel good about wearing. Her love of the western way of life has driven her to design bags, belts and fashions with western flair.
