I
t’s that time of year again and we are so ready for the NFR, the holidays and everything that comes with it!
Every year when family gets together for the Thanksgiving feast and then the day after brings Black Friday, we in the country western industry look forward to a couple of exciting weeks ahead. First of all, it’s the Miss Rodeo America Pageant which begins December 1st and ends December 8th and then during the pageant brings in the National Finals Rodeo which starts December 5th and ends the 14th. This all happens in the city that doesn’t sleep; Las Vegas, Nevada. Each year, we dedicate this issue to these upcoming events because we know the importance of both events. We are excited to feature the 2019 Miss Rodeo America, Taylor McNair as she ends her reign as Miss 16 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2019/January 2020
Rodeo America. We have loved getting to know her a little better and she has taken her role seriously and has been a great role model for the sport of rodeo. Not only are we featuring Taylor, but Miss Rodeo Utah 2008, Renae Cowley. We find out what she has been up to the past 11 years as she has become a well known professional barrel racer and business woman. This issue we are launching our latest section, “Cowgirl At Home.’ This section will focus on home decor not only for the cowgirl, but those who love just a little bit country. These are just a few of the fun reading we have in this issue. Enjoy! Merry Christmas from our Home to Yours!

Racing Christmas By Shanna Hatfield
S.E.M Leather Bags Designed by Stephany Miller
I came to know about S.E.M. Leather Bags a couple of years ago. I have loved the photos of her bags. I had a picture in my mind of a handbag that I wanted designed, so I contacted Stephany about it. She thought she could do it, so I was pretty excited! After only about a week of her starting the bag, it was finished. She sent me a few pictures along the way asking about different choices that I could have. And it turned out beautifully. I use it everywhere. It is my everyday bag and looks good dressed up or down! She has to suck up her pride as past relationship, Shaun Price is the pick up man, who comes to her aid. With strong feelings still between them, Brylee tries to push them aside as she has one goal in mind. With the holidays fast approaching and many difficult memories of their past relationship, will they find the forgiveness they both need to start again? Shanna Hatfield’s heart felt novel, “Racing Christmas,” will not dissapoint. I loved every part of this book. The rodeo action was incredible and the sweet romance between the lead characters, Brylee and Shaun were the perfect dose.
This book is the perfect read for the holidays. It was a book that I could not put down. Such a sweet caring story and it included everything I love. Rodeo, Romance and Christmas! Shanna has a way of bringing characters to life, engulfing you in the moment. Don’t miss out on this read. It will be a book that will uplift and entertain you this holiday season. 18 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2019/January 2020

“Read A Book, Help A Cowboy!” I absolutely love what Shanna Hatfield does each year. This is her sixth annual, “Read A Book, Help A Cowboy,” Campaign. If you buy one of Shanna’s books through December 24th, she will donate 10% of all her net book proceeds to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. The JCCF is a non-profit organization that assists rodeo athletes who have sustained catastrophic injuries and are unable to work for an extended period. The JCCF steps in and steps up, offering support to injured cowboys until they can get back on their feet and back to competing. It’s a wonderful thing for the rodeo athletes to be able to heal without being overwhelmed by financial worries. The other great thing about the JCCF is that they dedicate one hundred percent of all contributions received for disbursement to eligible applicants without any administrative fees being subtracted. When you donate $1, that whole dollar goes directly into the fund. You can find Shanna’s books in digital, paperback, hardback, and audio formats. She writes sweet historical and contemporary romance, rural humor. She has also written a children’s book, cookbooks, and entertaining guides. Holiday Nails
Your nail color can be an important part of pulling off the perfect holiday look
The Right Look
With the holidays, we usually think a red tone is the best. But there are so many ways to make your nails have the holiday look with many different colors. For example, a blue with a splash of silver sparkle will give you that festive, holiday look.

So many nail polish shades to choose from. Make sure you choose the cool or warm tone that compliments your skin 20 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2019/January 2020

The Perfect Shade...
Whatever shade you select, make sure it compliments your wardrope along with your skin tone.
Fair Skin Tones
Medium Skin Tones
Deep Skin Tones
Pale skin tones are generally cool, so lighter shades with pink or blue undertones work best. Pastels can also look great. Choose blue-based pinks or reds to brighten up your skin.
You’ve got a lot of versatility here. Almost any pink, from reddish to fuchsia, will suit medium skin tones nicely. Stick with orangey reds and cherry reds to complement your golden undertones.
While every shade of lacquer looks amazing on dark skin, this is our favorite pick for the very best shades. Pink: Elle says that those with dark skin should stay away from light, baby pinks. “Make sure you’re really wearing pink,” she says, pointing to neons and bright fuchsias.

Keeping Your Barrel Horse Focused at the Gate By: Ron Petracek
nyone who has spent any time around barrel horses knows that many of them can become very excited very easily. Bring them anywhere near an arena gate and they can go from calm to crazy in just a few seconds. Many people think that this is acceptable behavior and all great barrel horses behave this way. I am here to tell you that not only is this behavior not acceptable, but it can be downright dangerous.
A
30 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2019/January 2020
There are a lot of people out there who know how to train a horse to run the barrels. The problem is that a lot of these people don’t take the time to keep the horse focused on obeying commands. These horses are taught that upon entering an arena they should run full blast around the barrel pattern and the job is done. If you tried to ride this kind of horse you would realize that once you are heading in the gate, there is not much you could do to stop or even slow the horse down. This can be dangerous for the rider, the horse and anyone who happens to be in the way. I have seen grown men get run over while opening the arena gate because the rider could not control their horse. This is not what I would call a fully trained barrel horse.
www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 31
Stable Life There are ways to correct this, or better yet, to prevent this from becoming a problem with your barrel horse. First, make sure you don’t run your horse through the pattern unless you are at a rodeo. Once your horse has been trained and knows the pattern completely, there is no need to run him every time. In fact, unless you are having a specific problem you need to work on in the pattern, you should not even practice the pattern very much. If you do want to go through the barrels you should walk or trot to let your horse know that he does not need to blast through every time. Another thing you can do is walk to your starting point and stop. Face the pattern and allow your horse to stand quietly, then turn and walk away. If your horse won’t stand still at first it’s okay, this may take time. The lesson is to get your horse to be able to see the barrel pattern and not have
32 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2019/January 2020
his mind go blank. Work on giving him simple commands to follow like backing up a few steps or giving to the left and right. Make him focus on listening to you. Once you have his full attention you can either walk away or walk through the pattern. Repeat this process until your horse can stop and stand quietly with a minimum command. Once your horse can do this you should try the lesson at an arena. Most horses will behave differently at practice than at an actual event, so you shouldn’t expect them to stand perfectly at first. Your barrel horse can be competitive, full of energy and fast while still obeying your commands no matter where you are riding. Being in full control of your horse at all times makes for a better horse and a better barrel run.

Q’s & A’s Cowgirls In Style Magaine: Where do you live and do you currently live in the country or city and how many horses do you own? Renae Cowley: I live in West Point, UT. It used to be pretty rural but the growth in my community has been explosive in the past few years! Because I also have a full-time big-girl job, I need to be close to the city and have a small place in downtown Salt Lake City. I am a little bit country and a little bit rock n’ roll, I guess! I currently own 5 horses (3 barrel horses) but the herd is always growing... CIS: You were Miss Rodeo Utah 2008 and placed 5th in the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. Can you tell us what that meant to you and any experiences you would like to relate? R.C.: Being Miss Rodeo Utah was a goal I had set for myself when I was 9-years-old. It was the experience of a lifetime. I grew so much that year and met people that have changed my life forever. I could never have done it alone. I had the most incredible support team, spearheaded by my mom. They shared their time and talents with me to help me achieve my dreams. I am forever in their debt, so I try to pay it forward wherever I can and help others achieve their dreams, whether it be rodeo queening, rodeo, professional, or otherwise. I try to serve others to the best of my abilities. I remember so distinctly being a small child and looking up to rodeo queens as my role models. As Miss Rodeo Utah and even as just plain ol’ Renae Cowley today, I want to be that role model for others. CIS: You are a professional barrel racer. Could you give us an update on what you have been doing with this the past few years?
“I try to pay it forward
wherever I can and help others achieve their dreams....” -Renae Cowley
R.C.: My barrel racing journey is still quite new. I used to show reining horses. As I was finishing up my MBA program I really got a hankering to compete on horses again. I decided I wanted to try something new so, why not barrel horses? I bought Stryker and we just hit the ground running, literally! I filled my permit in under 10 rodeos and am just having an absolute blast. I am chronicling as much of this experience as possible to share what I am learning with other women who might want to give this game a try. I want those who are ahead of me to watch and think, ‘Oh I remember that stage,’ and those who are behind me to be inspired by my successes and learn along side me from my failures. CIS: We have a section in CIS Magazine called, Cowgirl Boss. We know you are a business woman, could you tell us a little bit about your business and what you do? R.C.: I work at Utah’s largest and most prestigious government relations firm. We advocate for a variety of different companies and industries on Capitol Hill. I love the competitiveness of my job and that I get to work on something new every single day. I am really proud to be a part of significant policy decisions that impact these clients, employers, and communities.
CIS: You have done a lot of modeling. Can you give us a little background on your modeling career? R.C.: Oh boy, I would hardly call myself a model. I am just lucky enough to be friends with Chris Dickinson, the grittiest shooter in the West. He is a magician with a lens. It is just a fun thing we can work on together creatively to add value to my sponsors. Part of my goal in growing my Instagram account was to attract sponsors to help offset some of the steep costs of rodeo. Chris and I have done some really fun shoots together from freezing cold snow to red rock desert. He’s captured some pretty incredible moments and I am grateful to be able to work
36 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2019/January 2020
with him. CIS: What is your favorite thing to do in your down time? R.C.: This time of year you can just about always catch me watching football. I love the NFL. It is on my bucket list to go to every NFL stadium in the League. So far I have been to 9. CIS: What are you goals for the future? R.C: I’m a very goal-driven gal but just to name a few, I would like to make partner at the firm I work at, qualify for my circuit finals then the NFR, marry the love of my life (whomever that may be! lol)

the most famous cities out there, I highly encourage you to explore more than just a “strip” of it! Here are some favorites that I have discovered being a local and hanging with the locals of Las Vegas on and off the Strip.

Secrets On The Strip
T
his is an obvious place you’re going to visit if you’ve never been before, as it should be! Don’t miss out on the iconic scenes of all the Casino’s down on the strip. If a Local is taking you down to The Strip, they are most likely going to the Center Stage where Casinos like the Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, Venetian, Paris, and Caesar’s Palace casinos await to excite your senses with sites to see. Get your cameras ready!
Sprinkles: Cupcake ATM This is a new favorite to find on The Strip. Who can resist a cupcakes? Pick your flavor, grab and go.
The Secret Pizza Shop On the 3rd floor of the Cosmopolitan in what looks like a sketchy hallway you would never want to walk down, you will find the secret pizza shop! Make sure to order a slice and ask for the white sauce like all the locals!
Tips For The Strip... It is not a short walk to see all the Casinos and everything there is to do. I would definitely get a map of the strip from Google or Pinterest to plan out your adventure. There is a free monorail that travels between the Luxor, Mandalay Bay, and the Excalibur. Get a map of the monorail stops and where they are online. If you are going to use Uber, check with the hotels, because there are designated Uber pick-up/drop-off stations on The Strip. Also, make sure to check Groupon or an app like Flash Seats if you are going to get show tickets, concert tickets, game tickets, or hit any of the buffets. There are always deals. Never pay the full price unless you want to get ripped off!

Secrets Off The Strip
T
here are just too many good ones to share with you, but I’m going to give you my top picks! I truly suggest you step up your Pinterest game and research what there is to do in Las Vegas.
The Mob Museum If you are a history buff or want to hear some real local heritage events about Las Vegas, this is the place. You could spend hours learning about the organized crime of Vegas. There are exhibits on three floors of nearly 20,000 square feet. Visitors will experience high-tech theater presentations, one-of-a-kind artifacts and interactive, themed environments
Red Rock Canyon This is seriously one of my favorites, and hardly any of the tourists make it out here. It’s a beautiful drive through the park and there are hiking trails and rock climbing spots that are amazing. There’s something for all experience levels. There are guided tours or you can choose to explore by yourself. You won’t be disappointed!
Lake Las Vegas This small hidden gem is like a taste of the Italian Riviera. From shopping, quaint restaurants that allow you to enjoy the atmosphere, watersports, boat rentals, and golf to name a few. It’s a fun, yet slower pace that gets you away from the flashy lights of the Las Vegas Strip.
Remember...
Whatever you do in Las Vegas just don’t get trapped in the lights. Go find what calls to you and Las Vegas will have it somewhere!
The Pinball Hall Of Fame This place is not glamorous like the The Strip, but it is seriously a cool place. Pinball machines from all the ages in one place. I’m talking rows and rows of fun! From total antique games to the new machines, save your quarters and come play for a couple hours.
The Outlets Shopping! While shopping will be everywhere down on The Strip, the price can also put a hole in your wallet. There are North and South Outlet malls in Las Vegas. Both are near The Strip, but on complete opposite ends. Here is where you find many of your designer brands like Coach, Vera Wang, and many others, all at affordable prices! If shopping is your game, you must hit one of these.
Stoney’s Rockin’ Country Or “Stoney’s” as the locals call it. Bringing you country in Las Vegas. Believe it or not, many Las Vegans are as country as you can get. On the outskirts of the city you will find small farms and land with chickens, horses, cows, and goats. On Friday nights you must be 18 or older. Live local country music gets played and you get all the country line dancing your feet can manage. Go check out their website to see what’s happening during the nights you’re in town, www.stoneysrockincountry.com. They even put up line dancing videos for the month to learn and you can show up knowing the local dance that month! www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 43

Miss Rodeo America 2019 Taylor McNair By: Susan Gentry Hair & Makeup: Judy Wright Photos: Las Vegas Image Studio
As the 2019 reign of Miss Rodeo America, Taylor McNair comes to an end, CIS Magazine gets some q’s & A’s behind the scenes 44 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2019/January 2020
CIS
Q’s & A’s
Cowgirls In Style: Where are you from? Taylor McNair: Learned, Mississippi. My small town has no stoplights and no grocery store! However, we do have 4 churches for our large population of about 40 people. Though it may be small, I firmly believe that little town made me who I am today. I am so lucky to live in such a supportive and quaint town! CIS: How many horses do you have and have you ridden horses all of your life? T.M.: I currently have 4 very out of shape American Quarter Horses! They have had a great year off enjoying green pastures and an unlimted amount of hay while I travel the country and jump on a new horse everywhere I go! I started riding when I was very young. It all started with the dreaded pony named “Gypsy” that taught me a lot before then progressing to an old roping horse named “Patches.” I was able to grow and learn more through the National Little Britches Rodeo Association, 4-H, National High School Rodeo Association, National Barrel Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, National Intercollegiate Rodeo Associaton, and Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Each one of these organizations played a key role in making me the horsewoman I am today! CIS: How old were you when you entered your first rodeo pageant? T.M.: I was 15 years old when I finally entered my first rodeo queen pageant. Until then I had been to nervous and shy to tell anyone that I had spent the past 5 years dreaming of being a rodeo queen. However, it wasn’t until I was 16 years old that I actually won my first rodeo queen pageant, Junior Miss Dixie National 2012. From that pageant until now, I have only ever held PRCA rodeo queen titles. Rodeos like the Dixie National, Rodeo of the Mid-South, and Crossett really sparked my interest in becoming Miss Rodeo America. I was blessed to serve as Miss Rodeo Mississippi 2018.
I truly feel like I have had the best job in the world. I am truly blessed to have had this incredible experience and the numerous opportunities that Miss Rodeo America, Inc. has afforded me. -Taylor McNair

CIS: What is the hardest part of the competition? T.M.: While the fashion show and horsemanship were very fun and exciting, the knowledge and written test results for me were what took a little more time and preparation. The Miss Rodeo America Pageant in it’s entirety is extremely hard! From the early mornings and late nights to the draw horses and unknown speech topics, it is truly a weeklong competition that tests your abilities to think on your feet, show your professionalism, and showcase your personality. In addition, no cell phones, laptops, or iPads are allowed the entire duration of the pageant. No communication to the outside world wasn’t too bad when you’re surrounded by the other state queens, who double as your best friends! CIS: What has the past year been like? What is your favorite part of being the reigning MRA? Any experiences you would like to relate? T.M.: It has been a complete whirlwind! Traveling from coast to coast, Australia, and Canada, I truly feel like I have had the best job in the world. I am truly blessed to have had this incredible experience and the numerous opportunities that Miss Rodeo America, Inc. has afforded me. Besides traveling and meeting new people, my favorite part has been working with the rodeo committees at some of the most prestigious rodeos in the world. These hardworking volunteers work year round to perfect their week or weekend of rodeo festivities. Rodeos do not just simply happen, but rather they are the result of hardworking, dedicated men and women who want to showcase the best rodeo for the best fans. These selfless people do not get the recognition they deserve! CIS: What is your favorite thing to do when you come home from a busy week? T.M.: Normally, I have just enough time to unpack, wash clothes, repack, and catch the next flight. On occasion, I may have time to get my nails redone or visit the hair salon. Honestly, I haven’t really had 46 | Cowgirls In Style | December 20119/January 2020
time to do much else at home this year. I always like to catch up with family or friends over dinner! CIS: What is your favorite style of clothing to wear? Are you more a jeans, t-shirt/boots girl or dress up? T.M.: I have a newfound appreciation for style after this busy year of travel! Living on the road this year has taught me how to be a fashionista. Sadly, this was not a natural trait for me, but rather acquired when you are limited to a 50lb suitcase. You have to learn to improvise by styling those same outfits you have been wearing for a month or longer in new and different ways! I am so appreciative of my beautiful Montana Silversmiths jewelry, Wrangler jeans and shirts, Justin Boots, and Greeley Hat Works for making sure I was well dressed everywhere I went! I really love turquoise, a good pair of Wrangler jeans, and lots of rings! My style go-to is definitely a fun graphic tee, jeans, and some Justin Boot casuals. CIS: What are your hobbies, interests outside of rodeo? T.M.: I really enjoy running, reading, hunting, and volunteering. Living on my family’s farm there is always something to do. From helping with planting and harvest to working our beef cattle herd, there is no way one can ever be without something to do. CIS: What are your plans after your reign is over? T.M.: My plans are to stay involved in the Miss Rodeo America organization by volunteering on a state and national level. I also plan to continue timing amateur rodeos and hopefully obtain my PRCA Timer Card. In addition, I will continue to barrel race at local jackpots and eventually rodeo within the Southeastern Circuit. CIS: What advice would you give girls who are wanting to get involved in rodeo pageantry? T.M.: Go for it! There is no specific mold for a rodeo queen. It takes all kinds of girls with different skills and talents. Embrace who you are and be proud!

S.E.M. Leather Bags
S.E.M. Leather Bags by Stephany Miller
Handbag designer, Stephany Miller tells us the story of how S.E.M. Leather Bags was born
S
tephany started making her purses as a hobby about 11 years ago. She was working full time at a western store and one day they received a large order of exotic longhorn cowhides. With her creative brain, she thought... ‘What can I make with one of these hides?’ She found one with beautiful markings and the color that was so unique. She went to the tack room and picked up a lariat rope. She took them both home that night, sat down and drew out her first pattern. She punched holes in the cowhide and did a whip stitch to bring it all together and cut the handles from the lariat rope. Her first cowhide purse was born. She started to sell them at the western store, so in her spare time, if she had any, she would make handbags and by word of mouth, she started to get very busy with purse orders.
the beginning of S.E.M. LEATHER BAGS. But after three years of trying to do both work a full time job and then go home and make handbags, she was feeling some stress. She also had a husband and a son to care for as well, plus her animals. She made the decision to start her own business, and is now so happy that she did. It was a slow process at first, but with strong support and a network of great friends and family, they are still hand designing beautiful handbags here in the U.S.A.. She feels she is very blessed and gives all credit and glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.
She then started thinking of a business name and came up with her initials, S.E.M. and since she worked with leathers and made handbags, that was
