I would like to say 2020 did not disappoint, but not going to lie, it did disappoint in a big way!

shares with us her exciting life and newely named scout for the Los Angeles Laker basketball team. And, she can barrel race! Also, we are excited to feature Miss Rodeo America 2020, Jordan Tierney who was also asked to extend her reign as MRA Queen for another year due to this pandemic!

This will mark the first year since 2012 that we are not at the National Finals Rodeo. Due to COVID-19 and the last minute cancellation of the rodeo in Vegas and moving the location to Arlington, TX we decided there were too many last minute details to attend to in getting our magazine in racks at the NFR. Plus to make matters worse, the Miss Rodeo America Pageant had been cancelled. So you can enjoy thiis issue as a digital issue only and everyone can read it at no cost! So it ended up being a win-win for many people! We are honored in featuring American model, television personality, sportscaster and cowgirl Bonnie-Jill Laflin on our cover and featured story! How To Safely Pick Up A Horse’s Hoof By: Jeffrey Rolo

The idea of picking up a horse’s hooves may seem mediocre to some, but it can intimidate many owners since a well-placed horse kick would really hurt! Such caution is good, but in reality if you pick up a horse’s hoof properly you provide him with no leverage or ability to kick you.

A

simple act of picking up a horse’s hoof can be a person’s worst fear and can cause him to imagine an incident that is highly unlikely to occur with careful handling. Here’s how to safely pick up a horse’s hoof:

Starting with the front hoof, approach your horse diagonally from his front so that he clearly knows you are there – you don’t want to surprise him. Place yourself even with his shoulder and make sure to face his rear; you will both be facing opposite directions during the hoof picking process. Making sure that your feet aren’t too close to the horse’s hoof, start running the hand parallel to him down his shoulder and along the length of his leg, finally stopping just above his ankle. Gently grasp the ankle portion and click (or otherwise verbally cue him) to ask him to raise his leg. If he’s well trained, that small cue will be more than enough and he’ll do just what you requested. You’re now free to begin picking his hoof.

32 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2020

If your horse is being a bit stubborn or hasn’t learned how to pick up his legs yet try leaning into his shoulder as you run your hand down the back of his cannon bone. You can also gently squeeze/pinch the tendons to further cue him to what you would like. As you perform these physical cues make sure you provide a verbal one also (I make a clicking sound) so the horse later associates your sound with the requested response. Increase the weight you push against his shoulder until he finally lifts his leg as requested. When picking a horse’s hoof you want to remove all debris from the hoof clefts as well as the rim and frog. Be careful around the frog because it can sometimes be a bit sensitive, particularly if the horse has thrush. Once you have finished cleaning the front hoof carefully guide it back to the floor; you don’t want to allow the horse to slam it, potentially hitting your foot in the process. Praise your horse and pat him on the front shoulder a bit so he understands that you are pleased with his cooperation, then run your hand along his back to his rear leg. Place yourself in the same position as you did with his front leg and do the process over again. (Cont’d.) www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 33

Stable Life There is a slight difference between lifting a rear foot and front foot, even though your basic positioning and actions are nearly identical. When you lift your horse’s rear foot he will probably give a little jerk that you might misinterpret as a kick. This is a common reflex reaction among horses and nothing for you to worry about. Secondly, when you raise your horse’s rear leg you’ll want to step into him a bit so that your hip is underneath his leg. Rest his leg on your thigh, grab his hoof and gently flex it upwards. By doing this you lend him some support and more importantly the position of his leg and his flexed hoof will prevent him from being able to kick you. Clean the hoof, lower it cautiously as you did the first and praise him. Congratulations – you’re halfway done! The opposite side will be done exactly the same way, but try to return to

34 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2020

his front and start the opposite side rather than move around his rear. It’s bad practice to approach or circle all but the most trusted horses via the rear in such close quarters since a horse would be within range to strike. When lifting any hoof try to make sure your horse is properly squared (balanced evenly on all four legs) so that when you lift one hoof he can easily balance on his remaining three. At no time should the horse actually lean his weight on you! Even when you rest his rear leg on your thigh you’re not allowing him to use you as a crutch. Once you have picked your horse’s hooves a few times it will probably become very simple and take less than 5 minutes to clear all hooves. Most trained horses will raise their hoof for you the moment they feel your leg run down their leg.

Cover Girl

Bonnie-Jill Laflin By: Susan Gentry Photographer: Creig Nakano Hair & Makeup: Moni Sebestyen

This cowgirl has done it all... Bonnie-Jill Laflin has a number of firsts in her career. Laflin is the first and only female NBA scout, holding the front office position with the Los Angeles Lakers. She is the first to cheer on a professional level for three teams, in two sports, starting with the NBA and the Golden State Warriors, and moving to the NFL with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. Laflin is the first female to be awarded six championship rings in two professional sports, earning a Super Bowl ring during her time cheering for the 49ers and five NBA championship rings as an executive for the Lakers. 42 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2020

CIS Q’s & A’s Cowgirls In Style: You have quite a resume at such a young age. You are currently host of Westwood One’s “Weekly Pass”, reporter for NBC Sports. You have also many other experiences in the sports world which we have mentioned later in this interview. Have you always had a love of sports? What got you started?

CIS: You played Dierks Bentley’s love interest in his 2005 video, Come A Little Closer, Toby Keith videos, had recurring roles in such television series as Baywatch and many others. You were also a suitcase holder for Deal Or No Deal, a model for many campaigns and magazines. What were some of your favorite takeaways from these experiences? B.J.L: I think everything I’ve done in my career has built character and allowed people to see that I’m not one dimensional and have a lot of layers to who I am. Each job has helped me with the next and molded my brand. I’ve always had the conquer the world mentality, that you only live once so why not do everything you want in life.

Bonnie-Jill Laflin: I grew up a “Daddy’s girl” playing sports, riding horses and attending every sporting event in San Francisco (49ers, Warriors, Giants, and even college games). I would read the sports page every day, and I even tried to scout players as a kid! I was definitely a tomboy and I knew I wanted sports to be a part of my life. My first stepping stone into the sports world was becoming a NBA and NFL Cheerleader. This introduced me to CIS: Having been a Dallas Cowboys Cheerso many great contacts and friends that helped leader, are the tryouts and experience as me into my next journey in sports. rigorous as the CMT series shows? You were also a Golden State Warriors and San CIS: You have broken ground and become Francisco 49ers Cheerleader as well. Did the first and only female player scout in the you prefer one over the other and what NBA. Tell us a little bit about your work as were some of your favorite experiences? a scout with the LA Lakers and how it came B.J.L.: Dancing my entire life and member about? of the SF Ballet I was lucky enough to make B.J.L.: I was working as a reporter for CBS in each team on my first try out but that came Los Angeles covering the Lakers, and I would with so much sacrifice dancing since I was 2 get into long, in-depth conversations with their years old and training every day. owner, the late Dr. Jerry Buss about players and the triangle offense. So I started scouting Pac 12 and Big 12 conferences on my own time not getting paid to prove myself, which led me to to a 12 year career with the Lakers and 5 championship rings. The journey was not without a lot of adversity, tenacity and of course tears. Being a woman in a man’s world is always under much more scrutiny and having to prove yourself each and everyday. And lots of travel – seemed like I was always on the road to or from somewhere. But it was worth it in the end.

“ I’ve always had the

conquer the world mentality, that you only live once, so why not do everything you want in life....” -Bonnie-Jill Laflin

I tried out for the Golden State Warriors when I was still a senior in high school and made the team, being named “NBA Cheerleader Rookie of the Year”. Then went on to the San Francisco 49ers Goldrush for 2 years, earning a Super Bowl ring. The next year I made the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders being a member of their show group and cover of their calendar. I actually think the process of becoming a DCC is much harder and crazier than the show portrays LOL. But that is why the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are known world wide and will always be the most iconic and finest in the country being labeled America’s Sweethearts. I had so many wonderful experiences traveling across the globe for shoots and appearances while dancing on the sidelines for my childhood teams. And I can’t forget the life long friend-

ships, my 2 best friends are from my cheering days. From my experience, the NBA focuses more on technical dancers while the NFL focuses more on a “look” along with your dancing skills. CIS: We see you are working on barrel racing. What are your goals with this and tell us about your horse/horses? B.J.L.: I’m finally taking the time to really focus on my barrel racing with my mare, Elsa Rae. I’ve owned horses all my life and I use to do it for fun when I was a teenager competing in NBHA and Gymkhana’s. But now since the pandemic I’ve being able to work from home and it’s allowed me the time to be with my horse everyday and really train hard. My amazing trainers Shelley, John and Rosie Holman at Holman Performance Horses have taken me to a new level, pushing me outside my comfort zone and it really feels good.

People stay comfortable or content in their life and there is no growth from being comfortable. Each jackpot I improve on something and that’s what I try to focus on is improving one thing each run even if it’s small. It’s progress. I’m gaining my confidence with my horse so we can be a dynamic team. It’s a rag to riches story. Elsa Rae was abused, starved and found in a pasture by my friend and retired jockey, Bobby Gonzalez. Come to find out from her branding, she was bred really well as a roping horse and a registered AQHA. Through rehabilitation and love she thrived and then I took her on. The transformation of her body is just incredible. From almost dying in a pasture to a barrel horse is pretty special. She now lives a spoiled life with me with lots of love and all the treats she can get.

seas including 8 tours to Iraq and Afghanistan during the war to entertain and support our heroes down range. Being able to boost morale while bringing a piece of America to these men and women was life changing for me. My most memorable tour was when I spent Christmas in Iraq with our troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom. But it doesn’t stop there. I visit the troops stateside as well at military bases across the US and numerous veteran hospital visits through out the year. Just being able to spend time with the soldiers and hear their stories is something I will never forget. Each soldier I have met has touched my life. They are always in my thoughts and prayers. (Cont’d.)

CIS: Tell us about the non-profit Hounds and Heroes and your role? B.J.L.: I founded Hounds and Heroes in 2010 combining my love for animals and supporting our military and first responders. Our main initiative is pairing shelter dogs with wounded warriors, veterans and first responders as both service and therapy dogs. We also conduct equine therapy retreats for wounded warriors with horses I’ve saved from slaughter and OTTB. In essence we are saving 2 lives…a hero and an animal that would otherwise be killed. I wouldn’t be able to do it all without my volunteers and amazing CAO, Shannon Bruemmer. CIS: Tell us about your connection with the military/first responders and numerous USO Tours. B.J.L.: Both of my grandfathers served in World War II, where one received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. My uncle, a Gunnery Sgt. in the Marines, served in Vietnam and my father is a a retired San Francisco police officer (undercover narcotics) serving 47 years. So, supporting those who protect us came to me naturally at an early age. To date I have done 20 USO Tours over www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 41

CIS: You have devoted your life to rescuing dogs and horses across the country, including the 13 dogs and 26 horses either living in Texas or on your parents’ ranch. Tell us a little bit about this? B.J.L.: Since I was a little girl, my parents instilled giving back and paying it forward. We rescued animals since I was a child and that stayed with me so there really isn’t an animal I don’t want to save. Millions of animals are euthanized at the shelters so I always encourage people to adopt if they can. Luckily my parents are so compassionate and have allowed me to rescue really anything and bring it to their ranch. Besides all the rescue dogs and horses. We even have rescue chickens, goats, turkey and a duck. My dad wants to kill me at times but over time falls in the love with each one :) I’ve been blessed with the most supportive parents from my career to my charity work.

CIS: For some of the young girls reading this article that would love to experience some of the success that you have had, what would your advice be to them in getting started? If it is something you believe in, don’t underestimate the demands, as well as the sacrifices you choose to make. I always joke that “I’m married to the game”! The rewards and dreams that you experience create a feeling like no other. Absolutely trust in your talents, so if someone says no – and they will – don’t get discouraged. With the free time I have, I really enjoy any time I get to spend with friends and family! CIS: How old were you when you entered your first rodeo pageant? J.T.: I was 23 years old when I entered my first rodeo queen pageant. It was the contest from Miss Days of ’76 2018, I was blessed enough to walk away with the title and it was the first of my three titles I have held. CIS: What is the hardest part of the competition? J.T.: Competition is all encompassing and there are a lot of ups and downs with all pageants. I would say that when it came to the Miss Rodeo America Pageant, the event I was most anxious for was Horsemanship because it’s a random draw horse, you don’t get to warm them up prior to completing your pattern and I wanted to do well in it. I put a lot of pressure on myself. Overall, the hardest part of the Miss Rodeo America Pageant was keeping my energy up over the course of 8 days. Most days I got up around 4:00 AM and didn’t get to bed until 11:00 PM so it was very long days if you let them be!

As Miss Rodeo America, I don’t just represent Professional Rodeo, but also the Western Lifestyle, so being home engulfed in that lifestyle gives you a renewed spirit. -Jordan Tierny

CIS: You have the opportunity to serve as Miss Rodeo America for 2 years because of the COVID pandemic. How did you feel when you were first asked if you would complete another year? J.T.: Honestly I have a very open ended plan for my future and nothing is set in stone so I felt comfortable committing to another year because I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything in the coming future. Also there were a lot of events that I was scheduled to go to that I missed out on so to have the opportunity to go to them in 2021 means a lot. Also a plus side to the pandemic was that I got to go to some events that normally I wouldn’t get to go to had it been a normal year, so that was special to me as well.

and when I have interactions like that it give me the reassurance to keep going! CIS: You seem to be the type of person who kind of goes with the flow and doesn’t let things bother you. How do you get your strength? T.M.: Yes, I am a very much go with the flow type of person. I don’t know if being the youngest of four is to blame for that, but I am very grateful that not much bothers me, especially in 2020! On a more serious note, I get my strength from my Lord and Savior. My faith is extremely important to me and if I didn’t have it 2020 would’ve been a much scarier year for me. Whatever happens will happen, but God knows how it’s all going to turn out and I have confidence in that.

CIS: Could you tell us how life as MRA has been during this pandemic? T.M.: Well normally Miss Rodeo America is home for about 30 days out of the year and travels over 100K miles during her reign. CIS: What advice would you My travel this year has been nowhere give girls who are wanting to get inPhoto: Rod Connor near that, but it has given me the chance to be volved in rodeo pageantry? back home at the ranch and help. As Miss Rodeo T.M.: The advice I would give is just start! There are so many people in this industry that lifestyle gives you a renewed spirit. In turn that that are willing to help so don’t be afraid to ask. Also has made me a better representative!
