t’s that time of year of leaves turning, sweet, crunchy apples, candy corn and those crisp cool nights. For me, it’s extra special as I live in the desert and sometimes that desert heat can get a bit overwhelming when August is finally over. We look forward to the cool, fall weather! Loving this issue filled with fashion, fashion, fashion and of course our beautful cover article of the 2017 Rodeo Queen of Australia, Bessie Smits. Bessie was in a tragic horse accident early in her reign and tells us how she is now doing and what she finds important in life. The NFR is right around the corner and with that is the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. For those of you that are needing a little royalty in your life, don’t worry, we have it! We are featuring a few of the state rodeo queens in this issue. Also, I am letting you know what I keep in my grooming tote and which tote I like the best. It’s the beginning of the holiday season as Halloween is soon approaching. Enjoy your early, cool nights and I’ll see you on the trail!

Concealer – the makeup step that can transform the eye area into looking like you got 10 hours of sleep! It is meant to brighten under our eyes and help create that well rested look. Think of applying it in an orange slice area under your eye. Don’t forget to dot the inner and outer corners of the eye making sure to blend completely so that it is seamless with your foundation. Apply with wand or soft concealer brush and blend with dampened makeup sponge. Set with a dusting of translucent powder. Favorites: NARS Radiant Cream Concealer - Maybelline Master Conceal Real Techniques Mini Miracle Complexion sponge– Beauty Blender Micro Mini sponge Ben Nye Face Powder – MAC Mineralized Skin Finishing Powder Foundation - test it on your jawline, check in the daylight! Don’t be afraid to ask for samples. Sephora is pretty good about giving samples of most products. Swipe 3 shades on your cheek/

jawline, the one that blends in seamlessly is your perfect match. There are 3 main formulas of foundation… sheer, medium or full coverage. Choose a formula that is right for you. Apply and blend outward with dampened complexion sponge. Set with dusting of powder. Favorites: Makeup Forever HD Foundation L’Oréal True Match Super-Blendable Foundation Bronzer – don’t leave home without it! Apply a dusting to the hollows of the cheeks and circumference of the face following the setting of your foundation. Yes, making the fish-kiss does help. Blend up and into the hairline and lightly along the jawline. Bronzer doesn’t belong in the Tzone but rather to the outside of the face to give that sun-kissed glow. Follow with a light dusting of blush to the apples of the cheeks blending the two together. In 2010 Western Crossings developed the "Let'er Buck Cologne" as a commemorative fragrance in honor of the Pendleton Round Up's Centennial Celebration. This legendary rodeo has drawn fans and cowboys from all over the world. It is the same cowboy spirit that was first captured in 1910 that we embody in our unique fragrance for men. The Vintage Cologne sits in a durable tin base, and is secured with a decorative tin cap. A creation of citrus, spices, bergamot and soft woods combine for an intoxicating scent. The Sport is the same notes but in a lighter fragrance and a smaller bottle tucked into a distress, embossed box. Blu Oak is a new fragrance for the ladies that carries a light, bright fruity scent. With top notes of pink grapefruit, lemon, mandarin and black currant it has a fresh opening settling nicely on to the skin with jasmine tea, orange blossom, cedar and soft woods. Your own inner strength and beauty are all you need to compliment this fragrance!

Creating your website Every business needs an online presence

T

By: John Klein

here are still some guidelines that one must keep in mind throughout the process of building their website. To start off on the right foot, try coming up with an appropriate domain name that fits your business. You will then need to make sure you register it on the web, so it is available for access to people. It should always be kept simple and easy to remember. Keep it nice and sweet, but remember to include mainly letters in the domain name, because numbers and hyphens can easily be forgotten.

32 | Cowgirls In Style | September/October 2017

Always remember to stay focused on the customer. After all, these are the people that you want to get your business from. Let us be all about the customers. Nobody will have the time to search for your products all of the time if you do not guide them in the right direction. Customers are just as busy as you are, so make sure you keep them first in the process. You should gain as much benefits out of your website as possible.

currently promoting? If so they will need to be prominently featured on the website. The reason for this is obvious – you want your likely customers to see the offers.

These are just a couple of tips to help anyone build your very own business website. Decide on a domain name that you can easily remember. Do keep your customers first no matter what you do.

The text on your website needs to be original and fresh. The content should also promote the sale of the product or service you are offering. This does not mean you will be seeking to promote a hard sell. Rather, you would include articles and text designed to promote information and attraction marketing. Such marketing psychology can work wonders for making a good impression on visitors.

The website needs a reliable landing page that immediately defines the type of business you run and what products or services you offer. This may seem like a very basic point and that is its true benefit. Many look towards a magic bullet that will make a website succeed which is the wrong attitude. You want a basic look that maintains clarity. You should ensure the organization of your website is effective. You do not want a disorganized website or else your visitors will leave the site as soon as they land on it. That means they will not end up becoming customers. Are there any deals or special offers you are

All the links on the website need to work. This may seem like a given. Yet, many publish websites with broken links which is both unprofessional and amateurish. Those are not two traits you want a business website to be successful.

Visuals will be a huge benefit to creating a quality business website. Items such as photos or video files can be added to a website preventing the website from becoming dull or aesthetically unappealing. *Follow us at www.facebook.com/cowgirlboss

Q’s & A’s

Coming back from a life threatening accident, Rodeo Queen of Australia, Bessie Smits talks to CIS Magazine CIS Magazine: Where did you grow up and were you always around horses? Bessie Smits: I grew up in Mount Isa, Queensland, home of the biggest Rodeo in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. From the age of 10 horses were my life, my background in riding is classical English, Pony Club, and show jumping. I qualified for the Queensland State Showjumping Championships in 2009. CIS: Tell us a little bit about your family and growing up in Australia? Bessie S: My Dad was an incredibly hard working man, he worked right up until the day he passed in 2014 due to cancer. He always made sure my mother, sister and I had the best opportunities in life and were well looked after. I get a lot of my traits from both of my parents which I’m very proud of. Growing up in regional Queensland is a unique way of living that I treasured, and still do treasure! There is a strong sense of mateship in the community, and quaintness that is to be apprecia-

ted. CIS: When did you start getting involved in rodeo? Bessie S: I moved to Cloncurry, a neighboring town to Mount Isa in early 2015 to be with my boyfriend who comes from a very well known Rodeo family, this is when I was first given the opportunity to learn and compete and began training a colt for breakaway roping. My roots in Rodeo go back to my childhood. Our pony club use to volunteer at the famous Mount Isa Rodeo working with the roughstock, roping stock and sponsorship flag bearing. My Dad would always come along and work too. Now, he was not a horse or cattleman by any means, and you could see how uneasy he was when he’d open the gates for the ranker bulls and horses after their ride. But that is where I first learned the endearing qualities of Rodeo and what captured my heart. He did that for me so I could be involved in a sport that I loved and that’s something I’ll never forget.

CIS: How many horses do you own? Could you tell Queensland with my boyfriend when both of our us a little more about them? schedules permit. Bessie S: I own one Quarter horse cross gelding called Coal. Previous to me owning him he was a contract mustering horse, or what is more commonly known as a ranch horse in America. I trained him as a breakaway roping horse, and he began to take to barrel racing at the start of the year (he always preferred chasing cattle over barrels.) One sentence that describes him best is, “Easy horses never make it great, and great horses never make it easy.” And he certainly never made things easy for me. CIS: Tell us a little bit about rodeo pageantry in Australia, or the Rodeo Queen of Australia

CIS: What is a favorite thing that you like to do when you can come home from a busy week of rodeo activities? Bessie S: I just like to unwind and catch my breath when I’ve been travelling a lot for my Rodeo Queen duties. Taking my dog for a walk, catching up on errands and spending time with my family, nothing too exciting! CIS: If you have any favorite fashion styles, feel free to include them.

Bessie S: I’m really enjoying the western trends that are resurfacing like fringe, use of cowhide, colored Bessie S: The Rodeo Queen of Australia pageant felt hats and bell bottom pants! is certainly what I would identify as the Australian I love getting creative with western fashion when equivalent to the Miss Rodeo America pageant. CIS: What advice would you give young girls who are looking to get into rodeo pageantry? Bessie S: I have two main pieces of advice. Prepare. Preparation and research is so very important, utilize all tools and opportunities that you can find to prepare the best that you can. You will find that you won’t feel so nervous come pageant week if you have prepared appropriately. There are so many resources to help contestants, whether they are just beginning their pageant journey, or are a seasoned veteran. And secondly, enjoy the process and be uniquely you! No one can give YOUR point of view or project your voice to the judges, except you! And that is very empowering.

What do you keep in your grooming tote? Here are a few of the things I keep in mine as well as some examples of other totes to keep you and your horse in tip top shape as well as ready for any circumstance By: Susan Gentry

Washing your tote The only tote I use is a washable tote bag. Noble Outfitters is a great bag as not only does it look stylish, but it has many pockets and compartments for various tools and brushes, plus you can wash it out as the bottom is a netting where water can drain out. Your equine tote bag can get dirty and messy pretty quick. It’s very convenient to have it washable.

The Secrets That Keeps Horses Trainable! By Andy Curry

The trick to training is to not push the horse too far with his built-in fear. We must never abuse this knowledge because it will backfire. Once it backfires then we will have problems with the horse we’re training.

46 | Cowgirls In Style | September/October 2017

A

s you likely know already, horses have at least 10 times our strength. If they also had our intelligence, they would probably be riding us humans. Fortunately, horses cannot reason like human beings and therefore will never have superior intelligence. Since they don’t have reasoning abilities, horse training becomes a challenge because you now have to understand how their intelligence works. You have to know what works and why to really be effective. The biggest secret that makes it so we can train a horse is the fear of pain and/ or punishment that our creator instilled in their mind. We can use that built-in fear to our advantage and teach the horse what we want him to do.

The trick is to not push the horse too far with his built-in fear. We must never abuse this knowledge because it will backfire. Once it backfires then we will have problems with the horse we’re training. How does it backfire? Let’s take a novice horse owner who fulfills his dream to have horses and train them. Unless he’s studied a horse’s nature he will probably get into big trouble with his horse because of the delicate balance of the horse’s built-in fear. For instance, the very first lesson you must teach your horse is to have confidence in you. If your horse doesn’t have confidence in you, he will neither trust you. Both are enormously important to horse training.

Think of confidence in this way. If you’re a child who’s just seen a scary movie on TV you probably want to sleep with Mom and Dad for the night. They’ll protect you. You’ll be safe with them. Hopefully, you know these things to be true because you have experienced it with your own parents. But if you didn’t feel like they’d keep you safe you wouldn’t have confidence in them, would you? A horse’s thinking is similar to that. He must have confidence in you when you’re working with him. A horse can be taught confidence in different ways. I prefer to the Jesse Beery confidence lesson. Jesse Beery, a famous horse trainer from the 1800’s, uses his confidence lesson as the beginning place of training his horses. He said, This is the most important lesson of all. Interestingly, it’s also the easiest. How nice it is that the most important lesson is the easiest to do.

to cross - yet the horse remained spooky. What Gene didn’t realize is the horse was fearful and needed his help. Anytime a horse is fearful of a place or a thing he should be reassured with a pleasant, soothing voice sounds and/or petting him. If you do what Gene did, you just gave your horse another thing to fear. Not only does that horse fear crossing running water, now he fears he’s going to be punished for it. And it’s likely that anytime the horse comes upon running water both fears will crop up and Gene will have a horse that would like to comply but his instincts are so powerful that he probably won’t (unless Gene figures out what to do)

Think of it from the horse’s point of view. You’re a horse that cannot reason and you’re instincts are self-preservation. What keeps your self-preservation in check is the built-in fear. Fear makes you run from danger. Fear is what keeps you alive. If you don’t understand someEssentially, the confidence lesson takes advantage of thing you fear it even more. (but never abused) the horse’s built-in fear. In a way, the fear is harnessed and carefully used to get the horse’s Now knowing all that, imagine you’re the horse and confidence in you. It’s akin to getting a child to watch a you’re standing at the edge of the river. You won’t cross scary movie and being there to protect him or her when it because you think there’s danger in it somehow. You want to be obedient and go forward but your instinct is When the horse gets fearful, you have to be there to too powerful and tells you not to.
