Gretchen Polhemus Jensen BACKGROUND: Co-Host ABC “Good Things Utah” Model ESPN Reporter Actress Miss Texas Miss USA 1989
Gretchen spent her life in Arlington and my college days at Texas Tech University. One of my jobs in college was cleaning horse stalls. I wasn’t raised on a ranch or farm but when you live in Texas, you fall in love with the culture that’s all around you. After my year as Miss USA, I started my career with ESPN television covering equestrian sports. I worked on a show called, “America’s Horse” featuring the American Quarter Horse. I also reported during the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas for a while. That exposure to equine sports invited me to celebrity events including the Ben Johnson Celebrity Cutting and Roping. I fell in love with cutting and started competing on my own. I even purchased a Doc A Lena’s blood line horse but due to my traveling schedule, couldn’t spend enough time training and competing. I thoroughly enjoyed riding the most amazing and prized horses that were generously donated for our use. I also competed in Team Penning, Barrel Racing and Reiners. I also announced for Bad Company Rodeo Company on horseback. My career continued in sports with ESPN for a number of years covering a variety of events from the Bud Lite Water Ski Tour, Pro/Am Beach Volleyball, International Special Olympics, Off Shore Powerboat Racing, ESPN’s Game Show,” The Dream League” and many more.
I also appeared in the remake of the movie, “Bonanza” with Michael Landon and Ben Johnson. I have continued my modeling career throughout the years. After Miss USA, Wrangler Jeans invited me to be a part of their Western Original Campaign along with George Strait, Nolan Ryan and Herschel Walker. I continued to model and in 2011, More Magazine voted me as one of the top models over 35 in the USA. In 2013, Shape Magazine did a story on her and other former MIss USA’s and where they are now. I also appeared in TIME Magazine featuring the anniversary of the 60 th Anniversary of the Miss USA Pageant and their former Title Holders. I now Co-Host a morning weekday lifestyle show on ABC called Good Things Utah. Some of my favorite interviews have been with Miss Kay from Duck Dynasty, Cody Simpson, Gavin Degraw, Mark Ballas, Manu Bennett, Chelsie Hightower and Peter Mayhew, just to name a few. I am a single mother of 5 children and I enjoy corporate speaking with my title of “A Million to One Odds,” which is about how the Wall Street Journal quoted a million to one odds that I would become the 5th consecutive Miss Texas to win the title of Miss USA. I finished second runner up at Miss Universe. Spring/Summer 2014 | www.CowgirlsInStyle.com

C
alving season is almost upon us down here on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Thinking back through the years I can think of quite a few mishaps around here. The
best ones though are the ones that you can look back on and have a good laugh about. With that said, here’s one that brings a smile to my face. In the spring of 2005, Shane and I were still in the courting phase of our relationship. We were newly engaged and still learning how to work with one another. Most of you will smile when you read my previous sentence because you know what I am talking about. When you roll your sleeves up and do some nitty, gritty ranch work with someone you get to know them on a level that you never knew existed. It may even be on a level that you never expected to see, never wanted to see, or wish you had never seen before. This wasn’t that extreme, but the outcome definitely let my soon-to-be-husband know that he hadn’t picked out a meek female for his bride, that’s for sure! It was the middle of calving season; we were tired, dirty, and cold. We had been nursing along several calves on milk replacer, but we had been searching for a real cow to put the strongest calf on. We finally got a candidate in the corral. Shane had her haltered and tied short to the fence. She had just lost her calf so our first priority was to milk her out a bit so we could feed an orphan who needed her colostrum (first milk) then we were going to put one of the stronger calves on her because she wasn’t exactly a peach. Well, she got an idea of what we had in mind and she didn’t like it at all. She fought around for quite some time. Shane finally grew tired of her antics and got a rope. He got her legs tied (sort of) and yelled at me to come over and hold her tail (which was fed under her closest back leg). This was “supposed” to keep her from kicking him. Oh boy…..as I look back I should have known this was a bad idea. Did I also mention that I was quite scrawny back in those days? Yep, all 120 lbs of me and I truly was a weakling. I was worried about the impending wedding so I had been dieting fiercely. It didn’t do much for me in the “hearty ranch girl” department. I took after the job of holding the cow’s tail and did my best to hold on. Shane set about milking her into a bucket. She struggled and fought around, but we managed to get almost half a bucket full. Things continued to take a downward spiral as she fought harder and harder. I had to readjust the tail on more than one occasion. Shane knew I was having a hard time 24| Cowgirls In Style | SPring/SUmmer 2014
holding that tail, but yelled at me, “Whatever you do, don’t let go of that tail!” Right about then, she kicked….and she kicked hard. There went the tail, there went her hoof into the back of Shane’s head, there I went knocked on my butt, and there went the milk bucket….all over me! She managed to scrape me with her leg too so I had tears ready to brim over. Shane was hollering and trying to regain his composure. I tried to get to my feet and rescue the remaining milk. About that time, here her backend came swinging back at me as she tried to fight her way out of the halter. Once again, she knocked me down and as I went I slung the milk bucket at the fence….WHAM!!! Milk went everywhere! Oh man…..what a nightmare! Shane was yelling, I was crying/yelling back, the cow was bellowing, it wasn’t good. I can sit here and chuckle about it now, but at the time it was far from funny. Shane still asks why I threw the bucket of milk against the fence. I have to remind him that I didn’t “throw” it….I had tripped on a frozen cow pile while trying to get out of the way. It was either the milk or me that went flying….selfpreservation won out that day, I guess! After things settled down, we salvaged a bit of the milk and we managed to get a bit more out of her. The colostrum had already been set aside so that was saved. The baby calf got what he needed. The orphaned calf got a mom and the cow got a baby (not that she wanted one by then). And well, we learned what each of us can/won’t do in a tight situation. We have had a lot of “togetherness exercises” since that first spring. I call them that because that’s what they are in essence. Everything we do on the ranch requires teamwork and a true partnership. Whenever we work together to this day there may be yelling and sometimes confusion, but at the end of the day we know that we are there for each other. We can hug, laugh, and know that we are in this together….no matter the outcome. One way or another we will get the job done…..and be able to smile and tell stories about it in years to come! I see this in other ranch families too and it warms my heart. I think it’s these “togetherness exercises” that truly keep us together and make us who we are. I’m proud of that!

Fit Cowgirl 40 Days, 13 Teams and One Goal... The Results are in from our 1st Cowgirl Fit Challenge!
F
orty days, thirteen teams and one goal, to lose weight and get physically fit. Was it possible to lose any type of weight in only forty days? Well, these contestants found out that you can!
If you are interested in joining the Cowgirl Fit Revolution, follow us on facebook at www.Facebook.com/Cowgirlfit or on our website at www.cowgirlfit,com You can also read the latest fitness information on our new online Cowgirl Fit magazine that will be available online on our website at www.cowgirlfit.com
To start, each contestant took their measurements, weighed in and sent in pictures of their current weight on the scales and before photos. From their, the Become the Best you can be! contestants were matched up with a partner. If the contestant had requested a certain partner, Cowgirl Fit tried to accommodate that request. The partners were teamed up by location and age. The reason for teaming the contestants up with partners was to help each other along their way. It is always easier to lose weight and get fit when you have someone that is helping and pushing you along. When one gets down, the other can help pick them up. The contest started on February 17 and ended on March 28th. A special Facebook group was set up for the contest so that the contestants could correspond with one another. This group enabled the contestants to share recipes,
exercise ideas, but most importantly to cheer and motivate each other along the way. The women became very good friends in this challenge and even mentioned that winning the grand prize wasn’t the biggest prize in all of thiis. They were happy to have made new friends that would last a lifetime and to have lost weight which has started them on a lifelong fitness quest. Even though starting out, each person was kind of in on it on their own, it ended in team work and friendships made. This challenge has started them out on a fitness journey that they will continue to work on each day. It is a life change.

Summer Travel Plan Your Escape for the Summer By: Susan Gentry
Summer... That word brings to mind so many reflections of childhood memories from road trips to sandy beaches to the countryside. School is out and you’re ready to venture.
W
ith summer just around the corner, now is the time to plan your summer vacation. Whether you are looking for a new rodeo to check out or jam at some country music concerts, visit some historical sites or to just take in the tranquility of the great outdoors, we have picked three of our favorite cities to check out. First on the vacation planner is San Antonio, TX. If you have never been, this summer is the time to go. With it’s beautiful river walk, to the Alamo, you won’t be disapointed. Another great city to visit in the summer is Nashville, TN. Always a bustling city, the first week of June brings you the CMA Music Festival which gives you more concerts than you can count. The night life and historical setting of the Grand Ole Opry and much more make this city one of our favorites to visit. You can’t skip Salt Lake City, UT. Many think this city is a hohum not too exciting city. Not so... With it’s towering mountain ranges, Salt Lake City is one of the most beautiful cities in the west. July is a perfect time to visit as this is when they celebrate their state’s birth with fireworks, a parade and the Day’s of ‘47 Rodeo. This rodeo is one of the best in the nation and lasts a good, long week. So saddle up and enjoy the perfect summer destinations. 50 | Cowgirls In Style | Spring/Summer 2014
San Antonio, Texas Those seeking a little Texas frontier history are sure to find it here -- San Antonio proudly touts sites like the Alamo, San Antonio Missions National Historic Park and the Spanish Governor’s Palace. The museums, such as the San Antonio Museum of Art, are also not to be missed. This city also makes for a great family vacation -- with educational and adrenaline-pumping fun. SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas will thrill both you and the little ones. And no city tour would be complete without a stroll down the River Walk, a three-mile-long path along the San Antonio River, which hits many attractions. From the Missions to the Hill Country, San Antonio offers so many things for visitors to see and do, ranging from major theme parks to the River Walk lined with restaurants, patios, galleries and shops. The city is filled with culturally significant arts, history, and museums.
Nashville, Tennessee Country music’s capital is perfect for the whole family. There are plenty of things to do in Nashville -- the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Ryman Auditorium, for starters. With so many Nashville attractions, you’ll be happy to know that Nashville hotels are world-class, too. If you’re a Country music fan, mark your calendars for June 5-8th as it’s the CMA Music Festival. Four days of Country music talent, autograph sessions, great food and shopping. What more could you ask for? Don’t forget to tour the Grand Ole Opry and mall that are so famously known for rich entertainment and history and food. The downtown area of Nashville features a diverse assortment of entertainment, dining, cultural and architectural attractions. When traveling to Nashville in the summer, the weather can get a bit humid. Make sure to bring an umbrella for those last minute summer down pours that sometimes come in the late afternoon and evenings. It keep this beautiful state green.
Salt Lake City, Utah Disarmingly pleasant and easygoing, Salt Lake City is well worth a vacation stop. Its setting is superb, towered over by the Wasatch Front. The area offers great hiking and cycling in summer and fall and, in winter, some of the world’s best skiing. T
he MRA Seminar took place March 26th - 30th at the Dallas Market Center! It was such a success and we have posted just a couple of the highlights from the week. It’s a great way to get the girls ready for a year of rodeo and pageantry.
The girls are getting some knowledge on timed events from the 2008 World Champion tie down roper, Stran Smith!
Former model, Karl Marshall coached the girls on proper modeling techniques.

The Western Wanderer Wandering Into Oatman, Arizona Written By: Cort Flynn
This old town full of buildings of yesteryear is not a dead ghost town but full of life and energy of the old west including bank robberies, shoot-outs, hold-ups, and more several times a day.
O
n old Route 66 (America’s highway) not far east of the border town of Bullhead City lies the mining town of Oatman. This old town full of buildings of yesteryear is not a dead ghost town but full of life and energy--energy of the old west including bank robberies, shoot-outs, hold-ups, and more several times a day. We even saw a tour bus stopped by desperadoes and its tourists made to disembark the bus and subjected to the whims of the gun-toting cowboys. All in fun of course!

The town was named after a young girl, Olive Oatman, who was kidnapped by Yavapai Indians This town’s old buildings are full of shops with all kinds of fun, from antiques to an old fashioned ice cream parlor and fudge counter. You can see the old jail and walk through an old mine. The miners of old used burros to help in the mine work. Those burro’s descendants are now wild and roam the area. In the morning they wander into town and down the streets looking for hand-outs from the tourists. You can buy carrots or other feed from locals and handfeed the little guys. It was a hoot! For lunch stop in at the old Oatman Hotel. Its walls are lined with hundreds, maybe thousands of dollar bills and try one of their giant western burgers or other sandwiches and listen to a live western singer or band. By the way, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon night in 1839 in this old hotel. Another very interesting thing about this town comes from its name. It was named after a young girl, Olive Oatman, who was kidnapped by Yavapai Indians along with her sister. It seems a brother survived the attack by playing dead. The younger sister died in captivity with the Indians. Later, Olive was sold to the Mohave Indians and treated as one of the tribe. Her face was tattooed by the Mohave as was the custom with many of the tribes women. The tattoo is quite unusual and gives the appearance of a bearded chin. She was later released by the the Indians to the US Calvary near Oatman, thus the name. If you go, make your base in Laughlin, Nevada just across the Colorado River from Bullhead City. It is a fun little gambling town with nice hotels and bargain rates. They overlook the crystal clear river and offer boat rides up and down and a beautiful river walk all enjoyed in a warm mild climate in the winter. Well, till we meet along the skyline of the western slope...
