pring has sprung and country weddings are in the air! This issue we are featuring some gorgeous bridal gowns as well as other wedding accessories. Also enjoy the spring and summer fashions by DD Ranchwear, our articles in Stable Life and Judy Wright’s column on getting your hair and make up ready for your big day. I am also pretty excited to tell you about my new mare, Sandy! I might be the only cowgirl that has never owned a mare until later in life. I am a gelding type of cowgirl, if there is such a thing. I have owned several geldings, and have never wanted to mess with those testy mares as I have been told in the past. But let me tell you, I am loving her. I should have had a mare years ago. I guess I can’t say, I have never had a mare as that’s what I learned riding starting at four years old, but it was my family’s horse. I am looking forward to keeping you in the loop with this mare and in fact, have started a blog, “Whoa Sandy.” I would love any feedback from some of you who may be professionals at mare keeping. She is a Palomino, which is also my first. Her coat has emerged from a more faded blonde over the winter to a rich, dark golden blonde as it gets warmer weather. I would love any feedback with this. Make sure you go to our website, www.cowgirlsinstyle.com and click on the “Whoa Sandy” blog to follow it. I look forward to reading your feedback. We’re also looking forward to our Cowgirl Fit Challenge. If you are looking to drop a few of those pesky pounds and get in shape for summer, we are starting the 2DBeach Challenge. Join with a friend or we will team you up. We are also giving away some pretty cool prizes. We hope you all have a sizzling summer!!

Shania Twain Album Update

Extra Extra

Christina Vinson - The Boot Ever since 2013, when Shania Twain mentioned that she had an album in the works, country music fans around the world have been waiting eagerly for the latest word. Since Twain’s split from ex-husband, and record producer, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, she had remarried and stepped away from the spotlight until 2012-2014 performing in Las Vegas and also in 2015 embarking on the “Rock This Country Tour.” While many fans have wondered if the album will ever be released, Twain has reassured her fans, stating that she is still working on it. Twain has not yet released the title of the album but according to Rolling Stone, Twain has said that she plans on releasing a new single in March, with the full album coming in May. One of the new songs, “Who’s Gonna Be Your Girl?” is a direct reflection on Twain’s broken marriage: “It’s about feeling unappreciated and knowing that you are secondary,” she notes. “Having to live with someone that has different priorities and accepting that you’re not the most important thing in a person’s life.”

A n o t h song, “Swinging My Eyes Closed,” her resilience: fighter in me that song,” says. “I was of a boxer swing, or a coming out with his closed. They can’t even see yet swinging with their eyes closed.”

Twain explains that many of the songs on this disc were reborn throughout the album process: “Most of them started off quite melancholy and a lot darker,” she admits; for example, ”Swinging With My Eyes Closed” was totally dark at the beginning. It’s just all of a sudden the light went on and there was light as well as darkness. There’s a lot of songs that have that contrast on it that maybe are too subtle for the listener to even realize.”

What You Really Need To Know About Starting A Work From Home Business

W

hen you work from home, one of the hardest things to get right is knowing where to do your work. In your bedroom? In a special home office? Well, here are a few pointers. A Dedicated Space is Best. I really believe that you won’t get far unless you set aside a space and use it for work only. Why? Well, if you use your work space for things other than work, then you’ll get distracted by anything you leave there. Other people in the family might become frustrated by not being able to use the space, or you might find that you simply don’t have anywhere to put all the important pieces of paper you acquire, meaning that they get lost. The Art of the Home Office. A home office is really what you want -- this really needs to be a dedicated room of a reasonable size. You shouldn’t have too much trouble if you convert a small bedroom, as most bedrooms are actually surprisingly large once you take away the bed. Your essentials for a home office are a desk, chair, computer, filing cabinet and phone/fax. If you don’t have spare ones of these lying around then you should buy them used, or from some kind of discount store -- don’t spend a cent more than you need to on your office furniture and equipment, at least to begin with. Still, though, do try to find things that don’t look too bad, and that match. Do make sure that you have everything in the room that you’ll need for your business, and that your equipment is good enough that you’ll be able to use it for long periods of time without it becoming painful. If you plan to do a lot of phoning, for example, buy a headset so that you can do it hands-free. It’s also worth spending just a little extra on that chair, if you’re going to be sitting on it a lot. You should also make sure that the room is well-lit and decorated in a style you like: one that says ‘serious’, but not ‘dull, terrible work’. Keep it at a comfortable temperature, with good ventilation. Many people like to make their home office visibly different 20 | Cowgirls In Style | Spring/Summer 2017

to the rest of their house, by having a differently-colored carpet or wooden floor, or painting the walls an entirely different color. Whatever you do, though, I have no doubt that it’ll be better than 99% of the corporate offices out there. The most important thing is that you don’t spend too much, but that you make sure to solve any problems you have with your space as soon as they come up. A Whole Other Building. One thing that some people like to do when they set up home offices is to make it completely separate from their house: a business annex. This could be expensive -- for goodness’ sake don’t build a whole other building if you don’t have something like a shed or garage to convert -- but it is also one of the most effective ways to work from home. It’s not so much a ‘home office’ as an office that you’ve built right next to your home -- and it gives you a much clearer sense of when you’re working and when you’re not. Home business came into being some time back. However, would you believe that there are some people who still don’t know what a home business is? This option is especially worth considering if you do a manual trade, especially if you already have some kind of workshop space. I knew a carpenter who saved himself all sorts of headaches when he moved his home office away from his bedroom and into his existing workshop in his garage. A Question of Tax. When you’re organizing your home office, don’t forget about tax. The area of your house that you do business in should be taxdeductible, and so should any equipment you buy or other work you have done. Don’t use it as an excuse to get carried away, but do remember that you’re not spending quite as much as you think. As long as you don’t go overboard. Your home office will be one of the most important investments you will make -- as anyone who’s ever tried to work from home without one can tell you. Author: Brad Gray

eddings – where new love begins, vows are renewed, memories are made and hopes and dreams are set in motion. All brides are beautiful but there is definitely something special about a country bride! Country weddings are warm, inviting, steeped in tradition and no one can argue that there is fun to be had at a country wedding! It is such a special day and there are so many details to be attended to.

wedding tips

*

Have a trial run for both your hair and makeup. Even if you are doing it yourself, you’ll want to know how long it takes. You don’t want to be rushing or trying anything new on the day. A wedding makeup artist will be able to assist with the best shades for your skin tone, hair color and wedding outfit and give suggestions for something a little different from your everyday look.

*

When deciding on your makeup, keep in mind that it will need to last all day. A good makeup artist should be versed in what to use to ensure your makeup lasts. The only thing that should need to be reapplied would be lipstick or lip gloss. If you would like them to accompany you to the wedding to keep you looking fresh, ask ahead of time.

*

Well-groomed brows are a must and can really finish your look. Take the time to have them professionally shaped for beautiful definition. Some procedures can cause the eyes to be red or puffy so make sure it is not too close to the wedding.

Prepping the skin before makeup is very impor*some tant. You want to have a warm glow and there are fabulous products on the market that provide this. So in addition to hydrating your skin, ask your artist for suggestions on products that give a beautiful glow to the skin. This along with bronzer on the temples and hollows of cheekbone, a beautiful blush on the apples of the cheeks and the perfect lip shade, creates a timeless look.

browns, taupe’s, golds and caramel colored *canSoft eyeshadows are perfect for a wedding look. Black sometimes be too harsh so go for shimmery brown tones if you want a softer look. Go with a rich, brown pencil smudged a bit on the top lash line and only shadow on the lower. And don’t forget mascara! Waterproof of course! If you like false lashes - go for it! They are fun to wear and look great in photos. Once you’ve achieved your desired look, relax and enjoy your day and by sure to soak up every minute of it!

Five Quick Five quick tips to do with your horse when you don’t have a lot of time.

ome days you find yourself on a tight schedule and not a lot of time to work with your horse. On those days that you cannot squeeze in a ride with your favorite 4 legged friend, here are some quick tips to keep them in contact with you.

1

Lunging. It only takes 5 minutes to get your horse loosened up from the lunge rope. Use the three gaits, walking, trotting and galloping a few times to the left and then to the right. If your horse is in a boarding facility and does not get out of it’s paddock often, this is a great way to stretch it’s legs when your time is limited. Not only does this give your horse some needed exercise, but helps the bonding with horse and rider.

2

Lowering the head technique. Your horse should learn the lowering of the head technique which is used for brideling and haltering your horse. This is done by placing your fingers on the poll of the horses head. The poll is the top of the head behind the ears. ... press down on the poll and this will pressure the horse to lowering his head so that you have control while bridling. 5 O’Clock Hoof Pick Has an ergonomic grip and a bottle opener.

3

Brushing. Grooming your horrse is a great way to communicate with the horse and also gives you that horse and owner time. It is also good for keeping

your horse looking great, producing a nice coat and keeping your horse’s circulation going strong.

4

Cleaning out hooves. Cleaning out the hooves not only helps keep your horse from going lame, but it also teaches them to lift their feet when prompted and also gives that one on one time with horse and owner. Each time you clean your horse’s hooves, take an extra couple of minutes after you’ve pried out any packed debris to gently clear the crevice of the frog, and scrape any remaining bits of matter off the sole, with the tip of the pick. You want to be able to see the sole’s entire surface, so finish the job with a stiff brush. Some hoof picks come with brush attached, or you can buy a brush separately and inexpensively.

5

Walk with your horse. If you don’t have a lot of time to saddle up and take a ride, go for a quick, brisk walk with your horse. You can do this around the farm, around the arena, around the barn or down the driveway. Not only do you and your horse get exercise, but it’s a great way to bond with your horse. This helps to break up your routine together and gets you out and walking with your horse.

Squeaky Clean...

It’s that time of year to clean the grunge off of your horse from winter. Here’s a few pointers By: Rebecca Olnar

W

hether it’s a pre-show scrub or a summer get-out-the-winter-grime bath, your horse’s coat will benefit from a good shampoo. But, to be honest, that’s not the only reason I do it. I’m proud of my horses, and I want them to look well-groomed. That it’s good for the horse is an added benefit. While I can’t say if my horses like being clean, I certainly like them better.

want the horse’s skin and coat to be clean, yet you don’t want to kill the bacteria.

You’ll get wet, so dress accordingly. It’s not a bad idea to wear rubber gloves, which not only keep your hands warm, but also keep your skin from drying out. Obviously, it’s wise to tie him up or have a friend hold him. Finding a spot that won’t get muddy is a good idea, too.

Once you’ve made your shampoo selection, you’re ready to start.

Your shampoo selection should reflect how often you bathe your horse and what you intend the bath to do. Is it simply to wash away dirt? Is it to replenish oils in the skin? Is it to keep flies away? The more you bathe your horse, the more gentle the shampoo should be. Take time to shop. Curt Morse, regional product manager for Absorbine says that it is important to use shampoos formulated for horses. You want to look for a shampoo that is pHbalanced for the horse and mild enough so you could shampoo a horse every day if you wanted without causing any problems. Morse notes that horses have a delicate balance of bacteria on their skin, which needs to be maintained. You 28 | Cowgirls In Style | Spring/Summer 2017

I always use shampoos especially formulated for horses. If I’m getting a horse ready for a show, I bathe him a few days before the event. Even the best soaps can take the glossy sheen off the coat. Any stains or spots can be touched up the day of the show.

Begin by wetting the entire body down to the skin. I’ve found my horses generally enjoy this, especially in hot, humid weather. Start at the feet and work up the leg, then onto the body. This will get your horse accustomed to the sound and feel of the water. He’ll be more accepting when you finally hose his back. Mix the shampoo with warm water in a bucket. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions carefully -- some shampoos are more concentrated than others. Sponge on the soapy water, sudsing up each section at a time. After you sponge each section, work the shampoo inand the dirt out-with a rubber curry comb or a grooming mitt. Use lots of elbow grease. This is the time to get out all of the dead cells and dirt from deep in your horse’s coat. If your horse is dirty enough to color the white suds, shampoo again.

Make that Equine Shine! Keep soapy parts wet. If they are allowed to dry, the shampoo will leave a film that will dull the coat. Rinse well with clean running water in reverse order from how you wet him down. The better shampoos rinse out easily, but be thorough because residues dull the coat and irritate the skin. Start with the top first and work down, rinsing the lower leg and hooves last. It’s good to massage the horse’s skin with either your hands or a mitt as you rinse. Keep the water running until no more soap runs out. After rinsing, I use the sweat scraper on my horse to remove any excess water, followed by a good toweling. Finally, I walk him until he’s dry. If he’s not, my horse will immediately roll in the dustiest spot he can find, and it’ll be back to the drawing board. If it’s chilly or windy, you might want to toss on a cooler that will pull moisture away from the skin, and keep him a little warmer. Remember to use common sense when bathing-if you think it’s too cold to be standing outside getting wet while washing your horse it probably is too cold to bathe him, unless you have a heated wash stall. Horses generally dislike having their heads washed, so the task takes a little more planning. Don’t use the same amount of shampoo you used, proportionally, for the body, but use a separate bucket with minimal soap. That translates to less rinse time.

Using a small sponge, I gently wet my horse’s head, massage in the shampoo, then rinse. Keep in mind that horses don’t like gallons of water dumped on their heads, so it’s good to have another bucket of water with a clean sponge to rinse away suds. I finish by lightly wiping the nostrils and inside the ears with a damp (not wet) sponge. Tails and manes are tricky, too. Fold the tail in half, approach from the side with a bucket filled with warm soapy water, and dunk the tail in. Be careful; remember that you’re at the business end of the horse. Shampoo the tail the way you shampoo your hair. Don’t scrub too vigorously, or you’ll break the hairs. Keep in mind that a wet tail can pack a nasty wallop, so try to hold it still while shampooing and rinsing. Conditioners are a good idea, especially on the mane and tail. I have started using a mane and tail conditioner to minimize hair breakage. Morse also says that like shampoo, he recommends using a conditioner especially formulated for horses. It’s a very good idea if you bathe a horse frequently. Even a good shampoo will strip out some oils, so a conditioner is a good way to replenish those oils and, again, balance the bacteria. Baths can damage hooves. Bathing horses will tend to dry out hooves, which can lead to breakage, which might be why dry, brittle hooves are more of a problem in the summer. An easy way to minimize this is to coat the hooves with a petroleum jelly prior to bathing, says The Mane Points publication director, Dr. Ken Kopp. Spring/Summer 2017 | www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 29

Packing up feed, grain, and water for a horse-camping adventure can be a bit complicated. Here are a few tips to keep in mind. Feed/forage. Don’t take a whole bale of hay if you’re going camping for just a couple days.Take what you need for daily feedings, plus three or four extra flakes for the return trip. Wrap daily feedings in newspaper and tie them shut with string for easy handling. The hay won’t fall or blow around, and you can use the newspaper to start a campfire.
