On Sunday, June 6th at 5:30PM ET, viewers will be able to see Oakley in action on INSP’s exciting new original series, Wild West Chronicles, which is inspired by the true tales of famous characters and unsung heroes of the American West. In each episode of this unique, historical docudrama series, newspaper reporter Bat Masterson travels the frontier to uncover the stories of both notorious criminals and heroic individuals who helped shape America. To give you a preview of this episode (which features Annie Oakley’s story), here are a few

interesting facts about her: Her birth name was Phoebe Ann Mosey. She beat her future husband in a shooting match at age 15. She and Chief Sitting Bull were close friends; he considered her his adopted daughter, and gave her the name, “Watanya Cicilla,” or “Little Sure Shot.” She offered to raise up an all-female regiment to fight in the SpanishAmerican War.

Be sure to check it out June 6th!

K

Kristy Lee Cook

ristey Lee Cook graced the cover of our summer issue of Cowgirls In Style magazine back in 2013, after she placed seventh in the seventh season of ‘American Idol.’ We caught up with the singer, television personality to see what is new in her life. With 148 songs released and 3 albums under her belt, the now wife and mother is busy tearing up the dirt co-hosting The Sportsman Channel series, “The Most Wanted List” with husband, Lee Orr. Photo: Instagram

Photo: CIS Magazine

Q’s and A’s Cowgirls In Style Magazine: It’s been 8 years since we featured you on our cover (2013) and are excited to hear some of your latest happenings in your life. You are now married and have a son? Could you tell us a little more about them, when you got married and how your life is now? Kristy Lee Cook: It’s definitely been quite a while since we have caught up. I do have a son, his name is Tillman and he is 3! We got married 2.5 years ago and we’ve been together for 6 years. Tillman was a miracle baby, he had a 001% chance of being conceived, but God had bigger plans for him. He is an incredible son, so full of life, personality, respect, and kindness. He is so well mannered and is the easiest kid I’ve ever been around. I’m not just saying this because he’s mine,

I’m saying this because I actually couldn’t stand kids, I never wanted kids..... EVER, and I think God knew what I could handle because Tillman is perfect for me as a mom. All my friends with kids say he is so easy and they wish they had one as easy as him. He’s traveled the world and loves hunting, fishing and riding horses. My husband is amazing, he is such a good match for me, we hunt, fish, and sometimes ride together. He is such a good dad to Tillman. We are so similar and I’m so glad we are because we have a ton of fun together! I’m a very lucky girl to have both of these men in my life! CIS: How is it to work with your husband on the The Sportsman Channel series, “The Most Wanted List?” And how long have you been doing it?

Photo: Instagram 34 | Cowgirls In Style | Summer 2021

KLC: We took over ownership of The Most Wanted List 3 years ago, and it has been going fantastic. This is by far the most successful year yet, and we are so thrilled to be doing what we love together. We love traveling and hunting, and we get to travel as a family and see our friends and family along the way. It’s a paid trip by the show and its great that we own it to control what we want! CIS: What is your favorite thing about being married and family life? KLC: My favorite thing about being married and having a family is that you don’t have to play the “dating game” anymore. Lee and I watch movies and we both go, “man I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about that anymore!” It’s so nice to not have to give your heart and soul into something then have it torn apart over and over again. I DO NOT MISS IT! I’m so lucky to have a guy that is my other half, that we get along so well and handle each other so well that we rarely ever argue. I can count on one hand in 5 years the amount of times we’ve been mad at each other! It’s pretty nice. CIS: You are now working with barrel horses? Could you expand a little more on that? KLC: I’ve been riding since I was little, but I’ve always had horses as my number one passion. I train barrel/pole horses now. The last few I’ve Photo: Instagram

trained have gone on to be very successful! The first one I trained on poles ran a 20.2 with me. He was a stud horse and only 14 hands. I sold him to a teenager and she has won Nationals, Texas State twice, and he’s won horse of the year in High School rodeo. My second one, her name was Ammo, she was a once in a lifetime horse. We ran at the Patriot getting 7th out of over 1,400 runs. She was pretty amazing, that was her first year hauling, and under 50 runs on her belt. She also placed 2nd in the challenge race with Jana Bean winning it. She was solid 1D, pro caliber mare. She is now with a high school girl who has qualified for the Jr. NFR, won state in barrels in Washington, and has done some wonderful things with her. I love training horses for others to go win on, or just a step up horse for others! I’ve been pretty lucky to make some nice ones and I’m currently doing the same now. My ranch name is Elkheart Ranch LLC and we will have a website up soon with details on my program!

Q’s and A’s CIS: You have released some great singles, 15 Minutes Of Shame, Airborne Ranger Infantry, duet with country singer Randy Houser, Wherever Love Goes, all of which we loved! Any works in the near future of a new album or single? KLC: I actually have nodules, and my voice needs surgery, so I don’t have any plans to do any new music. However, I have been writing and recording the new show opener theme song for the show. Its called “Overcome.“ You can get it on our website www. themostwantedlist.com. It’s really an impactful song and super catchy!

to move to the Lone Star State? KLC: I live in Amarillo, TX right now. This is where my husband is from and so I’m here with him. This isn’t my favorite place to live by any means. Actually out of the 7 states, and 24 cities I’ve lived, this is my least favorite, lol. Too much wind!!! The storms here can be brutal. We get grass fires, which we had one almost hit our place. We had a fire on two sides of the house and someone came and woke us up at 4am. The fires were less than 200 yards from our house. There is no water, no trees and just dirt for days, not to mention an average of 18-20 mph winds daily! Which is why we are planning to get a place in Idaho. That way I can haul up for a few months and stay with my horses during different times of the year. It’s about time for a change of scenery!

CIS: What is one thing you took away from being a contestant on American Idol? KLC: I learned how to work, work, work; I never stop, I’m always going! I learned that there is always more you can do to get where you want to go. I want to work hard now CIS: What are some of your goals and dreams for the future? (cont...) and hopefully play later in life! CIS: You now live in Texas. Was it an adjustment for a Pacific Northwest girl

Photo: Instagram 36 | Cowgirls In Style | Summer 2021

Photo: Rock and Roll Denim

www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 37

Q’s and A’s KLC: My future plans are to get a place in Idaho, hopefully sooner than later. And to train a few more super successful barrel horses. I also would love to pro rodeo on one that I train instead of selling it. So that’s my game plan. Also, to continue making a successful TV show and have it get better each year!

KLC: I would advise someone to do some interning with a company to learn the ins and outs, but really start building a social media platform. That’s the best way to get sponsors and attention is to have a following. Same with the music industry. The best thing to do is if you want to be a singer, move to Nashville. Work harder than everyone else, and get in front of the right people CIS: What would you tell a young person by walking through a lot of open doors, unwho is looking to advance their talent in ei- til the right door leads you to your dream! ther the music or television industry?

Scout’s Trail By Susan Gentry Photos: Scout’s Trail Facebook @scoutstrail

Living the dream... Mother and Daughter, Michelle and Scout (12) Murphy have been traveling the world, mostly on horseback with rescue animals. They started this journey to improve their mental health and they are happy to say, it worked... We left it in Scout’s words...

M

y mom and I traveled the world (I have been to 11 countries so far) for about 4 years. On August 15, 2019, after selling our farm on Cape Cod, we hit the road full time. We live in a tiny home (truck camper) and tow our horses. We are seeing America by horseback! I have always been home schooled. It is primarily done through experiential learning with travel and culture providing endless opportunities for learning. I also have dealt with anxiety and depression and have fought my way back to a happy life. The road, the animals and nature is the place for me. We mostly camp and boondock in places where our trail dog is welcome. We would love to meet up and ride, especially if you have any kids who like to ride. Mom and I are available to speak at your club, venue, event or gathering. We can speak on our lifestyle and adventures, unschooling, my recovering from a riding accident and controlling anxiety. Mom can also teach wilderness medicine and how to stay safe and prepared in the backcountry. (cont’d)

TraveL I go to the school of life. Experiential learning as we travel. My first 10 years were spent on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. I was able to see, every year, right whales in Cape Cod bay. There are only about 500 left in the world.

Can you believe I have seen two different animals that are almost extinct?! The condors are making a come back. In the 80’s there were only a few left in captivity and none in the wild. DDT was the main reason for their original demise. Now it is lead ammunition from hunters. They are scavengers. Even crazier....they have been around since dinosaurs and used to be all over the USA!

While spending time in southern Utah we went in search of California Condors ( 9 1/2’ wing span!). We found them! We saw 4 at the cliffs where they have been released into the wild. Then, we found 16 more, at Navajo bridge. There are only about 500 One of the things we appreciate about living on the road is how welcoming small left in the world. town rodeo grounds are.

62 | Cowgirls In Style | Summer 2021

Some of the friendly and convenient features of small town rodeo grounds are... water, gate not locked, super friendly people, arenas to run and roll, rough stock pens and easy access.

will always be room to flip up your high ties if you don’t like or they don’t have pens. To find these places do a search on Google Maps. Search for rodeo or fair grounds in the towns you’d like to layover.

We are talking about local or regional fair grounds, not big ones that hold national events. The big ones are available if nothing is going on. They will have full hook ups and you will have to pay for each horse to have a stall. The small ones are free or practically free. You never know what you’ll get until you arrive. There could be grass in the pens or filled with tumble weeds! There

We’ve always had a great experience and met friendly people eager to help. Always remember to leave it cleaner than you found it. Follow more of Scout’s Trail travels as they may visit a location near you!
