“The world is the true classroom. The most rewarding and important type of learning is through experience, seeing something with our own eyes.” ~ JACK HANNA
Another World Dairy Expo has come and gone! The whirlwind experience changes from year to year, yet the excitement and fervor remains the same decade after decade. Changes in the past few years have included the schedule, which now features the bulk of the youth events on the ‘kick off’ weekend - Saturday and Sunday.
It’s a real treat to be there those days and witness the incredible number of young people participating in the youth fitting and showmanship competitions and in the Dairy Cattle Judging contests. Any time I hear some doom and gloom person pessimistically rambling on about the grim future of our business, I think of this group of highly motivated young people and heartily disagree.
The junior exhibitors in the breed shows turned out with their animals in fantastic numbers - from 84 in the Guernsey show all the way up to 260 in the Junior Holstein show. In many of the breed shows, the young show people were highly competitive in open competition. What the youth of our industry learn and accomplish during the week impresses even an old hand like myself.
That’s why it’s distressing when I hear stories of some schools making it difficult for our cattle-loving youth to have a few days away. Now, many school districts and teachers give their blessing to students traveling to Harrisburg or Expo or Louisville. But some, inexplicably, almost punish our kids for pursuing their passion.
Our friend Kyle Thygesen from Vermont had this quote on a Facebook post: “Learning from your elders, networking, responsibility, handling adversity, the joy of seeing your friends do well are lasting lessons.”
Right? RIGHT? I strongly believe in classroom academics, but if you can’t credit the things Kyle mentions in the overall ‘human’ progress of a student, you’re failing to see the forest for the trees.
I’ll admit I’ve freely borrowed the title of this editorial from Kyle’s post. It’s also something I fiercely believe. Growing up, our main family vacation each year was traveling to the National Holstein Convention - sometimes flying, but usually driving. The number of states I was able see with my own eyes by the time I was 18 was pretty remarkable for a northern Wisconsin farm kid. You
read about places, but nothing beats visiting the Gettysburg battlefield, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, or driving through the Great Smoky Mountains in person. As long as a student is getting their work done, why shouldn’t this learning experience be as highly valued as sitting in a classroom chair?
There are also schools that can be hypocritical in who gets sanctioned days away. Why are early departures for sports teams acceptable, but not days away to attend ag events? I grew up in a sports-loving small town, in a sports-loving family. I played sports, my son played sports, so this is not a knock on high school athletics - I love them! But in some towns, a team can regularly leave on a Thursday for weekend tournaments, but the ag kids can’t take a test early or postpone it until the next Monday. Missing a practice or two so a student-athlete can excel in another passion shouldn’t derail a whole season of effort. It’s the same story with local coverage for our high-achieving kids. The football team going to state will always be on the front page, but the dairy judging team that is a state or national champion can’t get a mention. This holds true for students pursuing other interests too - theater, arts, debate, robotics, e-sports, etc. I know this isn’t true everywhere, but it can be frustrating, and it certainly gives our kids an early lesson in what we prioritize as a society.
Enough griping by me - let’s do something. Be an advocate for our youth - explain everything involved in exhibiting at a show. Many teachers may not realize that it’s not a ‘vacation’ week! If you, as a parent, ever need a ‘recommendation’ phone call, email or letter from an industry person as to why your kid should have an excused absence - call me! If you ever need a news item or photo submitted to your local paper so it gets attention, call me! If you’re a coach for any of your school teams, celebrate those young people that have other achievements! Often, our kids that are succeeding in the ring are succeeding in other school endeavors as well - point that out!
Great seeing everyone at the Expo ringside! Next on the schedule - it’s All-American time!
Grand Champion at the International Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo…it’s one of the biggest spotlights in the business. This year, for the first time since 2020, the cow in that spotlight was not named Shakira or Footloose, but the 4-year-old, JeffreyWay Hard Rock Twigs.
Now, Twigs had started her show career in 2023 as a senior 3-year-old, winning an Intermediate Championship title at the Northeast Spring National Show and Reserve Intermediate Champion rosette at the Royal on her way to being named Reserve All-American Senior 3-Year-Old, but hit a new level in 2024 for owners Kevin Doeberiener, Lindsay Bowen, and Pat Conroy.
Sired by Cookiecutter Md Hardrock-ET, a Modesty son known more for his production proof of +2553 lbs of milk than for siring show winners, Twigs hails from a Wisconsin cow family known worldwide for its consistency and balance. The ’T’ family has been developed for generations by Jeff, Kate & Brooks Hendrickson at their Jeffrey-Way Holsteins herd in Belleville, Wisconsin.
The story of Twigs begins with the Inwood herd bred by John Auestad in Argyle, Wisconsin, about 45 miles southwest of Madison. Auestad liked big, strong cows with dairy character, and the herd was heavily influenced by Provin Mtn Ivanhoe Jewel, Sunnyside Standout, and Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation. When the highly-respected herd was dispersed in 1983, it attracted a huge crowd and 90 head averaged $3,490.
Jeff Hendrickson had been a herdsman at Inwood from 1979 to 1982, so he was very familiar with the cow families and was determined to add an Inwood-bred animal to their herd. His purchase of a 4-year-old cow that day became the foundation of the whole ’T’ family at Jeffrey-Way: Inwood Taffy Apollo. “She was a Wayne-Spring Fond Apollo daughter - a big, raw-boned thing - like the Apollos could be, out of a VG-88 Hagemans Tempo,” recalls Jeff. She eventually scored EX-93, and though she wasn’t a prolific heifer producer, she had enough daughters to gain Gold Medal Dam and Dam of Merit status, with the cow family mainly progressing through an Excellent Mars Tony daughter, Jeffrey-Way Mars Tara-ET.
The Jeffrey-Way herd has always been bred with an eye to type and production, and have utilized many popular high TPI sires over the years with the goal to breeding Excellent cows. Tara’s EX-91 Mark granddaughter, Jeffrey-Way Mark Trudy, out of a VG88 Bell, was the first family member to send sons to AI. Where Trudy opened the door, her daughter, Jeffrey-Way Mascot Tina EX-91 3E GMD, blew it wide open to bull stud and worldwide interest in the family.
One of the most popular Mascot daughters in the mid-1990s, Tina sold embryos around the world and put more than 20 sons into AI. “She was born about five weeks early,” recalls Jeff. “We were feeding her about five times a day to save her and get her going. At one point, I said we might have been better off to hit her in the head than to monkey with her so much, but that would have been a mistake as she paid for the farm with everything we sold from her.”
The Hendricksons were using the popular, high TPI sires at the right time, and Tina’s Luke daughter, Jeffrey-
“I would say they consistently have good udders and good legs. They’re big cows, but not ridiculously big, and they manage just fine in our free stalls and tie-stalls. They’re above average for size, but they’re not always really deep. They’re long-bodied cows with very, very springy rib, so they still have good capacity. Maybe built a little more ‘modern’ that way. Now, Twigs has more of that depth and drape to the rib, and she’s being managed and developed by great people with an eye to the show ring.”
Way Luke Tripoli EX-93 GMD DOM, was quite popular as was her Formation daughter, Jeffrey-Way Format Tate EX-93 2E GMD DOM. Tate was nominated for Global Cow of the Year in 2006 and had ten Excellent daughters to her credit. Her Goldwyn grandson, Go-Farm Artes, was a popular sire in Europe in the early genomic years.
Once the Hendrickson kids started showing, it’s this branch of the family that produced some of their biggest winners. Tate’s EX-92 Leduc daughter, Tatalee, who is the 5th dam of Twigs, was the Reserve Junior All-American Senior 3-Year-Old in 2007. Jeff & Kate’s granddaughter, Emma, exhibited the Junior Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show in 2021 with Jeffrey-Way Drman Tavor-ET, who was also named HM All-American Summer Yearling. Now EX-91, Tavor goes back to Format Tate through an EX-92 Corvette, an EX-94 BW Marshall, then a VG-88 Manat.
Another Jeffrey-Way bred animal placed third in the Fall Yearling class at this year’s International Holstein Show: Jeffrey-Way Tact, a Sheeknoll Doorman Impact daughter out of an EX-92 Armani, then a VG-86 Sanchez, an EX-91 Durham, then EX-92 Leduc Tatalee. Tact was also a winner this year at the Indiana State Show and State Fair for her owners, Kale, Kley, Ryan & Logan Beer of Berne, IN.
If you forced them to pick a barn favorite, the Hendricksons lean towards Jeffrey-Way Tanawood, an EX-95 3E Atwood with over 300,000 lbs of milk lifetime who is only three dams away from Format Tate.
Obviously, with a cow family thats been breeding and developing for 40 years, there are hundreds and hundreds of descendants of Taffy Apollo. The family makes up about 90% of the Hendrickson’s herd, and has produced close to 350 Excellent cows. It’s a remarkable number for the 100-head herd that operates with 60 tie stalls and 45 freestalls.
Even with that many members, Jeff thinks there is still a pattern to be seen in the family.

Now, Twigs has more of that depth and drape to the
rib, and she’s being managed and developed by great people with an eye to the show ring,” notes Jeff.
He acknowledges how enjoyable it has been to breed and mate the cow family over the years. “We’ve had some really good results from some popular bulls throughout the generations. Way back to Bell and Luke, then Chief Mark, BW Marshall, Durham all left us really good groups of daughters. As we move forward, I would say McCutchen, Atwood, Crush, Gold Chip and Doorman - all popular bulls that worked for us.”
Currently, he is mating the family to Lambda, Pazzle, Pace, Hancock, Avenger, Legend, Tatoo, and Sabbiona Hangover, an Italian-bred Dropbox son +3.75T +3.63UDC that traces back four generations to an embryo exported to Europe out of Mascot Tina.
It’s that Tate / Tatalee branch that produced Twigs and Jeff remembers thinking she was a nice heifer. “She was a really nice, straight heifer. Born October 1st, so a bit off-age, but she probably was a calf to get shown, but that was the COVID year, so that put a damper on it,” he says. “She calved in September at 1-11 and we wanted to show her as a two-year-old, but she was a bit stale by the next show season.”
Twigs scored VG-88 at 2-07 in May, and the family appreciated her as she bred back and made a 33,000 lb milk record with 1,400F in her first lactation. “She was a really nice two-year-old. I thought she’d mature into a 92 to 94 point cow one day and I thought we’d be showing her down the line. Then, when she calved in a second time, we kind of knew we had something special. She just came all together,” recalls Jeff.
Brooks posted a barn candid of Twigs on Facebook which piqued interest online. The Twigs story nears its next chapter when Kevin Doeberiener stopped in to see her in January 2023. After a couple of days of discussion, a deal was struck and Twigs was off to her new home in Ohio and started her show career with a bang at the New York Spring Show in March of 2023.
The Hendricksons got a few embryos back from Twigs as part of the deal and now have two March 2024 Tattoo daughters at the farm. Watching her campaign and with the Grand Champion title “has been a dream come true” for the Hendrickson family according to Jeff, and a pinnacle achievement for the cow family they’ve been forging for forty years!

to Siemers Holstein Farms, Inc. on breeding another legendary Global Cow of the Year, Siemers Lstr Hanan 33317-ET (EX-90-VG-MS). The “H” family has been a well-respected maternal line within the Holstein breed for many generations. 33317 provides a new and unique opportunity for breeders because of her sons’ abilities to create Polled and Red carrier offspring. These factors have made her a prominent maternal figure within Select Sires’ genetic program.

September 28 - October 5, 2024 · Madison, WI
World Dairy Expo 2024 saw the barns full in Madison, Wisconsin as 1,812 exhibitors brought 2,527 cattle to the grounds for eight different shows. Cattle came from coast-to-coast across North American and represented 39 US states and four Canadian provinces. Overall attendance at the event was 55,209, down about 1,000 people from 2023, and 2,731 international visitors made their way to Madison, representing 96 countries from around the world. Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Japan were the topped the list of honored global guests.
Traffic and trade was brisk in the barns, with many animals going home with new owners at the end of the week. Many new show ring stars captured attention and new fans, and we’ll undoubtedly see their names and genetics in sale catalogs through the rest of 2024 and into the 2025 sale season.

She has previously been nominated All-American the past two years.
First thing on Thursday morning, the judges fell in love with the winning milking yearling, Cherry-Lor Robin-P-Red, and stuck with her all day in naming her Intermediate Champion and eventually HM Grand Champion of the show for owner Phillip McCormick of Muncy, PA. Wildweed Warrior Maui-Red, who topped the senior 3-year-old class for Elmvue Farm of Johnstown, NY, took home the Reserve Intermediate Champion hardware. While once again this year, all eyes were on the showdown between two cows that have both carried the WDE Supreme Champion honorsErbacres Snapple Shakira and Oakfield Solom Footloose - Judge Jamie Black and his Associate Judge, Aaron Eaton, took a different path to select their Grand Champion and tapped the winning 4-year-old, Jeffrey-Way Hard Rock Twigs, exhibited by Kevin Doeberiener, Lindsay Bowen and Pat Conroy of West Salem, OH. The judges followed Twigs with the EX-97 point legends, Footloose and Shakira, who stood 1st & 2nd in the Lifetime Production class as Reserve Grand and HM Grand of the show. 397 head of Holsteins were placed over two days, making it the largest breed show at World Dairy Expo 2024.

Leah ended Thursday evening with being named as Supreme Champion heifer as well! It’s a rare feat for owners to take home Grand, Intermediate, and Junior Champion honors, but the Doeberiener, Bowen, and Conroy
partnership go down in the history books for accomplishing just that in 2024! Lyn-Vale Just Believe In Me, first in the fall yearling class, took home the Reserve Junior Champion title for Quality Holsteins & Beckridge Holsteins of Vaughan, ON and wrapped up a very successful 2024 show campaign.

Adored stood first in the largest class of the show with 44 winter calves officially placed by Judge Mandi Bue and her associate, John Erbsen.
Two familiar names and repeat winners from 2023 took home the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners for the International Holstein Show. Ferme Jacobs of Cap Sante, QC, bred seven animals that stood in the top ten, including the Champion Bred & Owned Cow of the Show, Jacobs Excalibur Bahamas, who anchored their Premier Breeder win. This is their 10th banner over the last 13 years! Butlerview Farm of Chebanse, IL owned outright seven animals placed in the top ten, and took home their third straight Premier Exhibitor banner. Ferme Petitclerc of St. Basile, QC is another familiar name in the running for Premier titles, and they captured both Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners from the heifer show. This is their 7th Premier Breeder and 5th Premier Exhibitor banner.
Two “new” sires captured the Premier Sire banners in 2024. GoldenOaks Master-ET had 10 daughters in the top 10 with two class winners, helping him capture the Premier Sire of the Heifer Show banner. Reserve Intermediate Champion was Bricker-Farms King Cinderella, first senior 2-year-old, owned by Kurt and Michelle Wolf and Josh and Samantha Fairbanks, Iowa. Cinderella was named Grand Champion of the Midwest Quality Colors Show this spring and was Unanimous All-American in 2023. After topping her class once again at Madison, Budjon-Vail Autograph Kristina-ET, was named Junior Champion. The winter yearling is owned by Budjon, Peter Vail, Cole Rupprecht, Brothers Three, and Shawn and Seth Nehls of Watertown, WI. Tim and Katie Busch of Grand-View Ayrshires, Cecil, WI, claimed their first Premier Breeder of the Heifer Show banner, while Peter Vail of Valatie, NY, took home his 4th consecutive Premier Exhibitor of the Heifer Show award. Palmyra Aryshires, Hagerstown, MD, was named Overall Premier Breeder for the 3rd time since 2018 and Glenmar-Dale Farms - Mark & Becky Brown of Fennimore, WI, was named Premier Exhibitor.
Marilie Autograph-ET was honored as the Premier Sire of the Heifer Show for the first time with 7 heifers placings in the top 5 (3 of those class winners), while Bear-Ayr Distinct Kingsire repeated as Overall Premier Sire. He had 8 milking daughters in the top 5, all showing in the senior 3-year-old class or younger.
SS Debs 929 finally got her day in the spotlight as she topped the 2024 International Brown Show! The winning component merit cow owned by Landen Knapp of Epworth, IA, has been in the hunt the last three years, placing 2nd-3rd-3rd respectively, but was able to rise to the top this year for judge Phillip Topp and Associate Judge Kaleb Kruse, who placed 327 head over two days, making it the third largest show of the week.

It’s really something to be in the seats or at ringside all week long for the shows at World Dairy Expo. Class after class after class of tremendous heifers and cows in all breeds are served up like a buffet for show and breed enthusiasts. When the Holsteins roll in on Thursday and Friday, it seems almost routine that some of the very, very best in the world will parade in front of you, only a few feet away.
But, happily, Expo always holds a little in reserve, and you get a class that wakes you up to what a remarkable event you’re witnessing. This year, we couldn’t help but be astounded by the Lifetime Production class in the Holstein show - the last individual cow class of the week to circle the colored shavings.
The class once again featured a showdown between Oakfield Solom Footloose and Erbacres Snapple Shakira - both cows with Supreme Champion titles to their credit, and both with big fan clubs in the crowd. As each cow walked by, the resume of the entire class grew more and more impressive. At the end, here’s how the class lined up:
1. Oakfield Solom Footloose EX-97 2E (7 years old)
2. Erbacres Snapple Shakira EX-97 4E (9 years old)
3. Pierstein Cicero Time Out EX-96 (11 years old)
4. Macland-HF Yoder Rachel EX-96 3E (9 years old)
5. Ms Beautys Black Velvet EX-96 2E (9 years old)
6. Alfinch Zelgodis Taci EX-96 2E (9 years old)
The whole class averged 96.3 points and a rundown of the accumulated titles and accomplishments is amazing:
FOOTLOOSE
• WDE Supreme Champion 2022 / Grand Champion, International Holstein Show 2022.
• Reserve Grand Champion of the Holstein Show in 2021, 2022 (and subsequently 2024)
• All-American 5-Year-Old, All-American 4-Year-Old, All-American Junior 3-Year-Old
• Footloose has been in shown at Expo in milking form every year since she first freshened in 2019 (including her Junior 3-year-old COVID year in Ohio)
• Scored EX-96 at 5-06 and then EX-97 at 6-07
SHAKIRA
• Twice WDE Supreme Champion 2023 & 2021 / Grand Champion International Holstein Show 2023 & 2021 / Grand & Supreme Champion RAWF 2023 & 2021

RACHEL

• Nominated All-American 5-Year-Old 2020
• Started out as a VG-85 2-year-old; scored EX-96 at 8-00

BLACK VELVET
• All-American Aged Cow 2022 and All-American 5-Year-Old in 2021
• Reserve All-American Senior 3-Year-Old 2019
• Twice Champion Bred & Owned Cow / International Holstein Show
• Was a VG-89 2-year-old that moved steadily up to scoring EX-96 at 7-00
TACI
• All-American Lifetime Production Cow 2023 and All-American 5-Year-Old 2020
• Reserve All-American in 2021 & 2019
• All-Canadian Junior 3-Year-Old 2018
• Moved from EX-95 to EX-96 at 6-01
All together, the best records on these cows average over 37,000 lbs of milk and they all have Very Good and Excellent daughters, several of them show winners in their own right.
Each one of these cows has had her share of the spotlight over the years, but to be ringside and watch this group assembled together was one of the real joys of World Dairy Expo 2024!
Has there been another class over the years in other breeds that rivals this group? Let us know your thoughts and memories - we’d love to share that history!

“This cow just overwhelms the rest of the class in her overall frame, style, and balance. She’s just a little more cow from end to end. You get back to the business end of that cow. Wow, what beautiful udder attachments on both fore and rear. A cow that’s just so symmetric in her udder, but just such a cow that just has so much breed character all the way through.”
Judge Ryan Krohlow
“A cow that you admire that length of frame. A cow that’s extremely, extremely dairy. A cow that’s extremely feminine and thin-hided and a cow that travels on an exceptional set of feet and legs. And then we get to that mammary system. She’s very snug and complete in the blending of her parts. You love the floor of her udder. A cow that you admire that height, width and top of her rear udder.” Judge Kevin Doeberiener
VIEUX VILLAGE GENTLEMAN JOY
“If this view from back here doesn't give you chills, we’ve got a pair of glasses you can borrow! This 5-year-old is one thing, balance. She is so correct, she blends so harmoniously through her parts. She’s got dairy strength, a great foot and leg, and a beautiful mammary system.” Judge Brandon Ferry
SS DEBS 929
“This cow just puts it all together for us. A cow that exemplifies dairy strength. Love the dairyness that she has, the drop to the midsection. And then you get behind her and she’s got that high wide rear udder with veins all over it.” Judge Phil Topp
“She’s graceful. She’s a lady. She’s the best uddered cow of the show today. A cow that’s nine-years-old, had six calves, just so much ring presence. A cow that’s modern. She’s got dairy strength with a beautiful udder.”
Judge Lynn Harbaugh SPRINGHILL KOJACK UNO-ETV
“A cow that just has so much dairy strength. She has so much width all the way through. A cow that’s extremely silky and feminine through her hide. She just carries her milk so high in her udder, way up above her hock. She’s wider in that rear udder.” Judge Jamie Black
“She is a cow that has stood the test of time and wears a beautiful udder. She has just has a welded on mammary system. A cow you love the width and substance and strength that she has.”
Judge Chris Lahmers
At this year’s World Dairy Expo, the 2024 A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award was proudly presented to Adam Liddle of Argyle, N.Y., in recognition of his exemplary leadership, sportsmanship, and contributions to the dairy industry. This honor is awarded to herdsmen or showmen who embody the same values the award was founded upon.
Liddle operates Liddleholme Holsteins with his wife, Nicole, and their children - Anthony, Brock, and Hailee - along with their spouses, Kennedy, Kaylee, and Bob. He is also a proud grandfather to Layton. The Liddleholme prefix has quickly established itself as a prominent name in the show circuit, with their cattle earning numerous accolades, including AllNY, All-American, and Junior All-American awards. A highlight of their success came in 2018, when Liddleholme Resurrect Lu, an EX-97 cow, was named the first Production Cow at World Dairy Expo and subsequently earned All-American honors.
Liddle’s journey began in 8th grade when his parents sold the family farm. He became involved in the show circuit during high school when his father, Bill, managed Pamtom Farm in Hudson Falls, N.Y. In 1993, Adam and Nicole moved to Sharon Springs, N.Y, to work at Ridgedale Farm. Today, the Liddles milk 60 high-type cows in a tie-stall barn.
In addition to his work at Liddleholm, Liddle has judged numerous shows worldwide, including the Junior Holstein, Red & White, and Guernsey shows at World Dairy Expo. His extensive judging experience spans to international shows in Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Switzerland. Liddle’s dedication to the dairy industry and his contributions to the show community make him a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
Family, tradition, and love for the Ayrshire breed are pillars of Maple-Dell Farm of Woodbine, Md. The generational farm owned and operated by David Patrick and his wife Ann, along with their two sons Mike and Denny, and a grandson, Derek was selected by the Klussendorf Association as this year’s recipient of the Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award. Exceptional dairy cattle breeders are awarded the title, and embody attributes associated with the Klussendorf award including character, ability, endeavor, and sportsmanship. The Patrick family is distinguished for their success in breeding excellent Ayrshires and the positive image they’ve established for their family farm.
The dairy farm’s beginnings date back to 1928. However, it wasn’t until 1941 that David Patrick’s father bought him two Ayrshire calves which sparked a passion and love for the breed. Just 14 years later, the two calves had developed into a herd of 45 registered Ayrshires. The family now farms 1,200 acres, milks 165 cows, and raises over 160 heifers in the same location where it all began. The herd has been production testing for over 60 years and classified for 40, with the ultimate goal of getting productive cows with solid feet and legs and high scoring udder traits. Maple-Dell Farm earned the title of the Ayrshire Association’s Master Breeder in 2010 and 14 constructive breeder awards for the herd’s outstanding production and type. It’s undeniable their breeding program is an indisputable success, with their prefix MdMaple-Dell.
The Maple-Dell herd has proven instrumental to the Ayrshire breed, setting a high bar for quality cattle. Over 100 cows in their herd have been classified as Excellent, with one cow scored at 95 points. Several cows with the Maple-Dell prefix have been awarded prestigious titles, with 17 All-American, 18 Reserve All-Americans, and multiple cows ranking on the Cow Performance Index (CPI) with high lifetime milk production.
Maple-Dell farm is widely recognized for producing highprofile cattle, the most recent family line being the “D’s”, leading with Maple-Dell Zorro Dafourth. The iconic cow was selected as
Grand Champion at the 2006 All-American Dairy show and World Dairy Expo (WDE) Reserve Grand Champion. Following four generations, cows produced from the family line have ranked at high levels on the CPI cow list. The breeding line has also produced accomplished bulls seeing that three bulls from the family, Maple-Dell Modem Drew, Maple-Dell Modem Diego, and Maple-Dell O Dixon, have all had active A.I. usage.
Other infamous cows of the Maple-Dell herd include Maple-Dell Hi-Kick Sweet Pea, which represented the Ayrshire breed on the Purina Mills “Dairy Breeds of North America” painting by Bonnie Mohr. The cow continued on as Grand Champion at the Eastern National show in 1988 and is the dam of popular A.I. sire, Maple-Dell Soldier.
Success for the Patrick family goes far beyond the breeding pen. Showing Ayrshire cattle for over 75 years, their pre-fix has traveled as far as international shows, demonstrating the quality and excellence of the family’s herd. Maple-Dell Farm has championed many winning cows at various shows, including the All-American Dairy show for over 50 consecutive years, and winning the show’s Obie Snider award in 2006. The accolades continued onto the Maryland State Fair with 12 grand champions, and WDE with back-to-back Grand Champions, Maple-Dell Luby in 1981 and Ardrossan Kellogg Soft Eye in 1982. The awards at WDE continued with two Junior Champions, Maple-Dell BBK Shea in 2006 and Maple-Dell Diligent Gift in 2007. One of Maple-Dell’s cows made Ayrshire breed history, with Maple-Dell I.R.S. Sweetnine who won at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Canada. This same cow was a junior champion Ayrshire at WDE.
The Patrick family is familiar with service and leadership, being active members of the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association for several decades. The Patrick family has supported a multitude of associations, including the Maryland Purebred Dairy Cattle Association, Wills Fair Association, Maryland/Delaware Ayrshire Association, and All-American Dairy Show Board. Being recognized for this leadership in 2007, Maple-Dell farm was inducted to and now holds a place in the Maryland Governor’s Agricultural Hall of Fame. In 2020, National Dairy Shrine awarded Maple-Dell its highest honor for a cattle breeder with its Distinguished Cattle Breeder Award.
Beyond their farmland, the Patrick family is actively involved in their surrounding community by providing opportunities for youth in agriculture. Whether hosting fitting and judging workshops or leasing over 20 head of dairy cattle each year to 4-H members for show, the Patrick’s have inspired positive agricultural experiences among the younger generations.
Maple-Dell farm has driven success in the Ayrshire breed, having proven influential to the dairy community around them. Their motivation for producing quality Ayrshire cattle has resulted in astounding achievements for their herd and their combined love for dairy and family has undoubtedly earned Maple-Dell Farms the title of the 2024 McKown Master Breeder Award.
2024 Merle Howard Award
Jacob Harbaugh was named the 20th Merle Howard Award winner at the 57th World Dairy Expo on Friday, October 4. Harbaugh is as hard-working and passionate about the industry as anyone out there. Like many juniors, he began showing cattle at the local level and eventually began to exhibit at state, regional and national shows. An ingenious and ambitious young man, Harbaugh pivoted during the pandemic and started his own fitting business working at sales, shows, and herd classifications.
A well-rounded individual, he has competed in speaking contests, Dairy Jeopardy, and Dairy Bowl competitions at both the state and national levels. Active in 4-H dairy cattle judging, his county team won the 2023 Wisconsin State Dairy Cattle Judging Contest and earned a trip to World Dairy Expo that year where he finished in the top 25 earning AllAmerican recognition.
An avid dairy cattle exhibitor, this Shawano County native has done extremely well earning Reserve Junior Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show with his Holstein Fall Yearling at the 2021
World Dairy Expo. The very next year, this Clintonville High School graduate exhibited the Junior Champion Brown Swiss in both the Junior and Open Show at World Dairy Expo’s International Brown Swiss Show. And, in this year’s very competitive Brown Swiss Fall Calf Class, his heifer stood second in the open show and earned first place junior honors.
When Harbaugh is not at school or on the road, you will find him in the barns by Bella-View, washing heifers and getting heifers ready for competitions. He works extremely hard and is a major reason for the success at Bella-View with heifers of various breeds. Always looking to learn, Harbaugh also took part in the one-week YBS Young Breeder School in Europe this summer.
In addition to being named the 2024 Merle Howard winner, Harbaugh was named the 2023 Star in Agribusiness by the Wisconsin FFA. This past summer Harbaugh was one of six individuals to earn the prestigious Distinguished Junior Holstein member award from Holstein Association USA.
The 19-year-old son of Sara and Lynn Harbaugh, Jacob is a sophomore majoring in animal science with an emphasis on industry and business at the University of Minnesota where he is active in the Gopher Dairy Club, the Ag Business Club and Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.
Richard Caverly Memorial Dairy Award
Katie Shultz of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania has been selected as the recipient of the inaugural Richard Caverly Memorial Dairy Award. The award was established by friends to honor the memory of Richard Caverly. Richard was known for his great cow sense, deep love of dairy cattle breeding and husbandry, and strong belief in the importance of training and guiding dairy youth.
The Richard Caverly Memorial Dairy Award is presented to an individual, aged 18-30 (on Jan. 1 of the award year), who exemplifies the qualities that Richard is remembered for. Nominators submit the nominee for consideration, providing details about the traits the nominee shares with the late Richard Caverly and citing examples of how they have demonstrated these qualities.
Katie Shultz, the inaugural winner of the Richard Caverly Memorial Dairy Award, maintains a small herd of Ayrshires and Milking Shorthorns with her partner, Dr. Jeffrey McKissick. She does not discriminate against breeds, having also owned Brown Swiss, Guernseys, Red & Whites, and Holsteins. Shultz has already compiled 32 Junior and Open All American nominations, and she showed her first Ayrshire at
World Dairy Expo in 2014. In the 10 years since, she has worked as a cattle fitter doing sales, shows, and barn clipping. Shultz was mentored by Micheal Heath, learning much about breeding, developing, and showing the great ones while still maintaining integrity within the industry. She now works for Cowbuyer doing internet marketing, working with herds across the country. Katie lives in Chambersburg, Penn. with her fiancée, Brian Reichard, and their son Brock. One nominator detailed Katie’s extensive knowledge of pedigrees and keen memory for where, when and how much cattle sold for, and who owns them now. It was noted that she shares Caverly’s strong belief that Ayrshire breeders need to be using genomic testing. All Ayrshire cattle that Shultz works with are genomic tested to add to the breed’s database while making sound breeding decisions. Another nominator said of Shultz, “Katie is a strong advocate for youth development in the dairy industry. She regularly hosts fitting clinics for young people, believing that it is crucial for them to gain the experience and confidence needed to fit their own cattle. Katie is committed to giving youth the opportunity to participate in shows, often taking them along and guiding them through the process. She provides hands-on instruction, allowing the kids to learn by doing, while always being available to offer support and answer questions.” Katie’s greatest contribution may be through oneon-one mentoring. She is currently working with Hannah Gingerich. Hannah traveled to World Dairy Expo and NAILE with her heifer to exhibit and learn, then joined the team as a paid member, traveling to the Western Spring National in Utah and the Maryland State Fair. Katie is teaching Hannah clipping techniques, bagging schedules, trouble shooting and more so that she is confident on her own. These traits and examples demonstrate why Katie Shultz is perfectly suited for this recognition. She is a breeder, caretaker, fitter, partner and mentor, and a promoter and advocate for the dairy industry. Recipients of the Richard Caverly Memorial Dairy Award become the caretaker of a beautiful traveling trophy – a wooden carving of Glenamore Gold Prize EX-97-6E, created and donated by Scott Hussey, a close
friend of Caverly. “Prize” was a five-time Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada. Richard worked with an extensive number of award-winning bovines during his career, but when asked to declare his favorite he would respond “Prize” without hesitation. Caverly award recipients also receive a commemorative plaque and embroidered item of their choice.
The Richard Caverly Memorial Dairy Fund (RCMDF) was created as a way for family, friends and acquaintances of Richard to continue his memory. This Richard Caverly Memorial Dairy Award will be presented annually. The fund may also support youth activities to continue Richard’s legacy of helping dairy youth. Individuals interested in donating to the fund can find details by visiting the RCMDF Facebook page or contacting Committee Chair, Jim Strout.
2024 Klussendorf Award
Tom Cull of Lomira, Wis., was presented the 82nd Klussendorf Award, the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman in the United States during the 57th World Dairy Expo. Cull certainly embodies the attributes of previous Klussendorf winners with the qualities of character, sportsmanship, ability, and endeavor.
The award is given in memory of Arthur B. Klussendorf, considered an outstanding showman of his time and a model for all those who have followed him. This year’s selection was made by members of the Klussendorf Memorial Association, formed in 1937, at its annual meeting held earlier this week in Madison, Wis. Cull received the silver trophy designed by Tiffany Jewelers of New York City.
The legendary Vince Lombardi and John Wooden were successful coaches because as leaders they mastered the fundamentals and paid attention to every detail. As a result, their teams went on to win many championships and team members won countless accolades. Just like Lombardi and Wooden, being CEO of a dairy farm, managing a facility, and overseeing the show string takes a special person. Tom Cull is the definition of attention to detail and having a vision for what he wants to achieve in the showring.
Also, to be a successful coach and to develop a winning team, one must develop great players. To that end, Tom Cull has hired and trained many people who have gone on and done well, learning from his program that often showcases upwards of 40 to 50 head of cattle at major dairy shows. All members of the team are on the same playbook to have a successful show.
The Klussendorf Association is the Hall of Fame of the dairy cattle show industry, and Tom’s Hall of Fame credentials speak for themselves. When you hear the names Elegance, Desire, Blexy, and Subliminal, you think of World Dairy Expo. You think of some of the best cows in the country. You also think of Budjon Farms and Tom Cull.
Holstein Association Executive Show Committee for a number years. He was a significant contributor to World Dairy Expo’s Five-Year Strategic Planning Committee that convened just two years ago.
The Klussendorf Award was developed to recognize those who exemplify a person with great character, sportsmanship, and dedication to dairy cattle shows. Tom Cull certainly has all these attributes and that is why he was selected as the 82nd Klussendorf winner.
Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award
Joan Seidel of Fleetwood, Pa., was presented the 33rd Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award during World Dairy Expo® 2024, in memory of Duncan MacKenzie, the 1961 Klussendorf winner. While this year’s KlussendorfMacKenzie award winner has an impressive dairy résumé, it is most important to note that Seidel exemplifies the standards that made Duncan MacKenzie the forbearer of this award.
Elite Dairy, Lylehaven, Ruann, Pappys, Cormdale, Snyder’s Homestead, Brigeen Farms, Woodmansee Holsteins, Tumbleweed, Green Meadows, Friendship Farm, and Pintail Point are among the farms that this year’s 33rd Duncan MacKenzie winner has worked for as she spends nearly 300 days on the road preparing cattle for shows, sales, and classifications.
Joan Seidel’s story began on her family dairy farm in Avon, N.Y. when she began showing dairy cattle at age nine. As she honed her skills, she went on to win numerous All-New York and Junior All-New York Awards. As she transitioned from Junior Holstein activities, the 2024 Duncan MacKenzie winner hit the
With that experience under her belt, Joan, along with her husband, Doug, formed the Camelot Cattle Company where they ran a showstring together. Clients and their cattle benefitted from the excellent care Joan provided and eventually those animals won numerous All-American nominations. During these days, the Camelot Cattle Company was known for winning multiple Herdsmanship Awards at World Dairy Expo.
With character being an important qualification for the Duncan MacKenzie award, Joan Seidel’s personal attributes are many as this year’s award nominators were quick to point out that she gives freely of her time and skills to educate and mentor young people on proper care and presentation of their cattle. When peers speak about Joan, she is recognized by people for the outstanding work ethic and the attention to detail that she brings to each task.
The humility that she also brings to work is also undeniable; meaning there is no task too big or small for Joan. She never complains and is an effective team member helping in whatever task needs to be completed, whether picking up manure or fitting the cows before they go to the ring. People ultimately trust Joan with their prized animals, and she treats them all with the same respect, whether it is the local 4-H project or an All-American.
Above all, Joan brings forth strength, character and an undeniable passion for the dairy industry. Those are among the many reasons that Joan Seidel of Fleetwood, Pa., was the fifth woman to win the Duncan MacKenzie Award in the past 33 years.
This next brood cow family has had more than several articles written about them. Kilravock Snow Storm and her dam Kilravock Midnight Snow have spent the last 100 years providing top genetics to the Brown Swiss breed.
It is a well-known fact that Snow Storm and several other of her family members were purchased and developed by Wayne Sliker, then of New Jersey, now of St. Paris, Ohio. But her story didn’t start there.
The Snow family lineage can be traced back to the first imports of the Brown Swiss breed. Beginning in 1867, one of the initial seven imported cows to the United Sates, Lissa was born. Registered as number 5, she was bred with William Tell, the first bull imported resulting in Estelle, registration number 13. From there the lineage goes from Estelle’s daughter Daffodil to Brownie Tell, Brownie 2nd, Brownie 6th, Browney C, Browney’s C Girl and then Cinnamon’s Brownie who was the dam of Cinnamon’s Maiden. Cinnamon’s Maiden was Grand Champion of the 1925 National Dairy Show in Waterloo, Iowa. She was bred by N. C. Schmidt of Monroe, Wisconsin, and then was purchased in 1928 by J. Frank Zoller of Walhalla Farms in New York. Mr. Zoller mated Cinnamon Maiden to the bull Suydam’s Nero resulting in their daughter, Nero’s Cinnamon Maiden of Walhalla. The next two generations continued at Walhalla until Cinnamon Maiden’s great granddaughter; Walhalla Wonderful Snowdrop was bred to Prince Baronet of Walhalla resulting in the 14th generation from Lissa, Walhalla Princess Snowflake.
In 1945, after several experiences with a variety of different breeds, Louis Ripley and his wife decided to build their dairy herd of Brown Swiss. The Ripley’s were the fourth generation on land purchased first in 1884 by Julie Dillon Ripley in Litchfield, Connecticut. At one time, the farm contained over 1200 acres, 10,000 white leghorns with eggs shipped to New York restaurants. There was also a herd of imported Kerry cattle and Devon oxen. In 1914 the farm had a dairy, flock of sheep and raised tobacco and potatoes which were later converted to all alfalfa. Louis Ripley, the fourth generation, was the son of
Louis A. Ripley and Constance Ballie Ripley. Louis A. Ripley was a member of the New York Stock Exchange and a grandson of Sidney Dillon who was the builder and president of the Union Pacific Railroad. Ballie was a founding member of the Girls Scouts of America. Their two sons, Louis R and Sidney Dillon would go on to excel in the world as well. Sidney became the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute for 20 years.
Louis R was a former president of the Heli-Coil Corporation in Danbury, Conn., which he founded in 1949, and also served as president of the United Cinephone Company in Torrington, Conn. He was president of Waltham Precision from 1957 to 1964 and retired in 1968. He married Dorothy Wagstaff who later became the secretary of the Connecticut Brown Swiss Association.
When Louis and Dorothy (Dottie) began acquiring Brown Swiss from good families and herds, one of those purchases was Walhalla Princess Snowflake from Walhalla Farms. Under the Kilravock prefix and the management of Hughes Curtiss, they produced award winning cattle in both production and type.
The Ripleys continued to develop the lineage that brought Snow Storm to reality by breeding Walhalla Princess Snowflake and her daughter to Lee Hill’s bulls. Kilravocks Blue Snowdrop was the first of the line to be on test and made over 107,000 pounds of milk. She lived to make records well into her twelfth year. She was a daughter of Kilravocks Blue Chip, a son of Hycrest Bluealarnick and Hycrest Emporer from Hycrest Farm in Massachusetts. Snowdrop was mated with Welcome In Midnight resulting in Kilravock Midnight Snow.
During the late summer of 1971, Wayne Sliker was selecting for consignments to the Eastern Breeders’ Sale when he stopped at Kilravock and spotted a group of white colored Swiss. Although the Ripleys would not consign them to the sale, Sliker did end up trading a group of fresh cows to them for the four animals. Those ‘white’ cattle were Midnight Snow, along with her full sister, Kilarvock Midnight Blue and another maternal sister and Snow’s daughter, Snow Storm that Wayne Sliker took back to New Jersey.
Between 1971-1973 the Produce of Kilravock’s Blue Snowdrop was 3X All-American with the two full sisters for Sliker’s Top Acres. Kilravock Midnight Snow was ‘5E90/90MS’ with 160,170m 6892f in 3195 days. She had five daughters, four scored Excellent and one Very Good along with seven sons through a flush program. Her full sister, Kilravock Midnight Blue was ‘3E90/90MS’ and was the Honorable Mention All-American in 1971. She had two daughters, one, a Lee’s Hill Bravado 4E90 HM All-American, one a ‘VG88’ Norvic Lilason Beautician with Lifetime credits to 3083d 140,650m 5658f and a Welcome In son, Top Acres Blue Chip, who sired some winning daughters for Snells in Ohio.
Midnight Snow’s daughter by Welcome-In Stretch, Snow Storm wasn’t the epitome of grace at the time of her purchase, but Sliker’s keen eye and instinct told him she would follow in her families footsteps. And the ‘gutty calf’ proved him correct. Snow Storm would go on to produce 4052d 212,000m and 9217f in her lifetime, score ‘5E90’ and be both ‘Elite’ and a Superior Brood Cow. She would win multiple All-American titles and the J.P. Eves Award and the National Total Performance Award in 1981. Sliker’s extensive flush program was successful for Snow Storm resulting in 24 offspring by sires Elegant, Notable, Balison, Jubilation and more. Through sales and exports, offspring could be found in several states, Colombia and Mexico and the next generations would make their way to Europe and around the world. Eight Snow Storm daughters in the US were scored Excellent and four ‘VG87’ points or higher of the 14 daughters she produced.
A branch of the Snowstorms that made their way out west to write their own story was Top Acres Rhythm Sunset ET. She is out of the ‘2E90’ Reserve All-American, National Total Performance winner, Top Acres Elegant Stylon ET purchased from Top Acres by John and Kim Mower in Washington. Rhythm Sunset went on to score ‘3E91’ and win several awards at the Western National Show for the Mower’s Chocolate Swiss herd.
Midnight Snow and Snow Storm daughters have produced All-Americans and nominations too numerous to count and descendants still continue to produce and show well. Many of her descendants have come into their own right as brood cows such as Dublin-Hills Sasha, Blue Heaven JW Snowplow, Sun-Made Jetway Shatzi ET and Kulp Gen Starbuck Shania. Both Shatzi and Shania go back to Top Acres Elegant Starlite ‘E90’ who, owned by Sunshine Genetics, exported and sold daughters all over the world.
Dublin Hills Sasha was the result of a purchase by Dennis Smith of Garstlyn SS Sonnett ET ‘2E91’ bred by Brad Garst. Garst had purchased her dam, Top Acres Simon Sable ‘3E92’ from Walkerbrae Farms in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Sasha is the fourth dam of Kourlyn Carter Starlight, a 2023 All-American Spring Yearling Nominee.
Several other All-American nominees in 2023 trace back to the Snow family including Double J Famous Sniper, HM All-American Summer Jr. 2; Cutting Edge BG DS Sharice, nominated AllAmerican Sr. 3; A Joy CP Snow White, nominated All-American Jr. 3 and A Joy T Snowfall, nominated All-American 5-Year-old to name a few.
In 2024, the legacy continued with the Snows at the International Brown Swiss Show. The 4th place fall calf, Jobo Packard C Snowball-ET, is out of Wind Mill Carter Snow Angel ‘E’90’ who was the All-American Winter Yearling and Reserve Junior Champion at WDE in 2018. Cutting Edge BG DS Sharice ‘E91’ and A Joy CP Snow White, noted above, were 2nd and 4th in the 4-year-old class, and Snowfall placed in the top ten.
Snow family members have also reached across the globe. Allstar Farms in the United Kingdom stated this on their Facebook page, “The Snowstorms are a must have for any Brown Swiss breeding program and there are two cows working at Allstar, both from the Cancourt herd. Cancourt Fifi EX90 is a 12th generation VG/EX by Vigor, 11 of those generations are Excellent. Cancourt Sindy ‘VG86’ is a Cadence bred from 7 generations of Excellent cows. This family makes Excellent cows for fun.”
Cancourt Fifi is the 10th generation daughter of Snow Storm. She traces back to Top Acres J Sadie ‘2E90’ a daughter of Elegant Style another ‘2E90’ daughter of Snow Storm. Wayne Sliker said “They (Husseys of Cancourt Farm, UK) were over here and spent about a week with us and we worked out an embryo purchase. One of Sadie’s embryo daughters by Elegant Simon, Cancourt ES Sadie ET, went ‘3E94’ and at one time was one of highest scored Swiss in Great Britain.”
The prolific genetics from the Snow families continue to make an impact in today’s breed from the sale ring to the show ring and in the bulk tank across the world.

We’d like to let you know that we are in the process of updating our subscription system. This should solve the most problematic aspect of the annual subscription format, which is the inevitable number of lapsed renewals and missed issues. We don’t like it, and neither do our valued customers!
We are transitioning to a recurring monthly subscription charge that will renew until you cancel. Think of it as the same as a Netflix, Hulu or Spotify subscription that bills you monthly. All subscriptions will include digital access to the magazine. You’ll never miss another issue again because of a lapsed subscription!
RATES:
U.S. Subscriber $8 USD / month
Canadian Subscriber $10 CDN / month
International Subscriber $15 USD / month
Over the next few weeks, all subscribers with active subscriptions and an email on file will receive an email notification with your current subscription details and expiration date. Many of you will have already received that email. No response or action is needed at that time. Before your subscription expires, you’ll receive a renewal notification asking you to create a new username and password and provide your credit card information for future monthly charges.
Subscribers who do not have an email on file or prefer will either receive a phone call or letter asking you to contact the office with your payment information. If you have any questions, please contact Elizabete at 209-202-5709.
