The End of an Era!

We saw the end of an era here in Wisconsin this spring with the closing of the Great Northern Sales Arena. Since its start in 1981, the Great Northern was home to hundreds high-profile consignment sales, herd dispersals, and monthly productions sales. The dairy sale business has changed here in the Midwest, like everywhere. Herd dispersals, the bread and butter segment of the industry, are getting fewer and farther apart around the country.

More than just a place to go to buy or sell cattle, the Great Northern meant something more. It was a gathering place for people in the dairy cattle business. Under the watchful eyes of Rick & Paula Bovre, the barns were always immaculate, the cattle were clean, you could grab lunch or a cup of coffee, and perhaps most importantly, there’d always be a good crowd and you’d always have good visits with people.

It was always a place of connection, which is valuable in any community. When I was in my college days and early 20s, I’d drive the three hours from the farm to Fond du Lac, go to a sale, and sometimes go out with my buddies, many of whom worked the sales there, to enjoy the nightlife. There were a few fuzzy Sunday morning trips home, but always some laughs to remember.

The Great Northern was the training ground for so many people still active and influential in the business. What must be hundreds of young people all had a turn at clipping, washing, passing slips - you name it. It’s been the best kind of hands-on training ground for budding fitters and sale enthusiasts in the upper midwest over the years and I’m not sure what will take the place of that learning opportunity.

The monthly production sales look to continue with much of the same staff in an online format on Cowbuyer.com. It’s the evolution of our industry and I have no doubt these sales will be a success. But I’m not going to lie, I’ll miss the in-person connection of the physical site. It was a bittersweet feeling seeing the Facebook posts about the auction of the equipment and personal property from the Northern. The chairs, the feed carts, the gates, the fans, the heaters. How many checks and trucking slips did Paula fill out while sitting at that desk?

There are many easier careers to pick than being a sale manager. Having your own sale arena makes things both better and harder. Countless late nights and early mornings with someone else’s cattle under your roof; sale crews to manage; collecting the money; billing buyers; arranging trucking…then clean it up and do it all over again. When people call on the phone the next day, they’re usually not ringing to tell you what a great job you did.

We’ll miss it as both a marketplace and a meeting place, but hats off to Rick and Paula for providing such a fabulous setting for so many years. They’ve also been steadfast in giving back to the dairy business - volunteers and award sponsors at World Dairy Expo, Wisconsin State Fair, organizing district shows, terms served on boards of directors, etc. Best wishes for a welldeserved semi-retirement!

We might not see you at the Northern anymore, but we’ll see you at the shows and sales! We may have to work just a little bit harder for the in-person connections, but the Registered dairy cattle trade is alive and well, and our late spring and early summer calendar is full of fantastic events in fabulous locations ~ see you there!!

101ST ANNUAL HOLSTEIN CONTEST Fan Favorites - Old and New

The 101st annual All-American Holstein Contest wraps up a fantastic 2023 show season. The International Holstein Show at Madison continues to be the heavy-hitter for the breed on the tanbark trail, and this year saw a rare showdown of two WDE Supreme Champions competing head-to-head in class - the Shakira / Footloose duel will be a memory for Holstein enthusiasts for many years.

In December, a committee of seven judges deliberated over the entries in each class to select the six nominees they considered the best of each age group. Those nominees were published in the Late Winter 2024 issue of Cowsmopolitan. A ballot was then sent to a larger panel of 21 judges, who each placed a vote for first, second, and third in each class. We thank them for their professional deliberation in voting for the final year-end titles.

Fourteen All-American winners were unanimous choices (twelve individuals and two groups) - a fairly typical number for recent contests. More unusual is that every single heifer class resulted in a unanimous winner. Genesee Altitude Leah (Spring Calf); Cal-Denier-I DL Alexus (Winter Calf); K-Hurst Alleyoop Primed (Fall Calf); Petiticlerc Lambda Anny (Summer Yearling); Kingsway Caught

Best Three); and Oakfield Corners Dairy (Senior Best Three).

Once again winners were scattered among the offspring of many different bulls as 23 sires were represented in the final tally of All-American or Reserve All-American award winners. Croteau Lesperron Unix retains his AA crown with three All-American winners and one Reserve All-American to his credit (three cows and one heifer), followed by Farnear Delta-Lambda, with two All-Americans and one Reserve AllAmericans (all heifers). Walnutlawn Sidekick, Woodcrest King Doc, Stantons Alligator, Stantons Chief, and Mr Danielle Devour also had multiple winners.

The Return of the Roses ladyrose caught your eye

You can’t say that the Blackrose family ever disappeared. Stookey Elm Park Blackrose EX-96 3E was one of the most popular show cows of the 1990s - an eight-time winner in the All-American and All-Canadian contests. She was the result of a mating that crossed a modern sire of the time, To-Mar Blackstar, with Nandette TT Speckle-Red EX-93, a red & white star of the show ring in the early 1980s, sired by Hanover-Hill Triple Threat. Blackrose proved to be one of the most prolific brood cows of that era; a cow backed by three generations of VG & EX dams that laid the foundation for generations of Excellent cows and All-Americans to come.

So it’s not exactly an overnight success story when we look at the remarkable year had by Ladyrose Caught Your Eye EX-94 in 2023. A Unix daughter that is now a three-time All-American in milking form, Caught Your Eye (CYE) is five generations removed from Blackrose, yet it seems to have inherited all of her transmitting ability. CYE was herself the All-American 4-Year-Old in 2023 and was directly responsible for eight more All-American nominations in the Holstein contest:

All of those listed nominations are daughters of CYE - including all three members of both nominated Junior Best Three groups. The pair of cows that make up the All-American Produce of Dam - Eyes On You and Eyes On The Prize - were her first two milking daughters and both are VG-89 two-year-olds. There are five different sires involved in those nominations, so it’s not even the result of one magic ‘nick’ - it’s undisputed brood cow power from one of the most renowned families in the breed.

The true breeding aspect comes honestly to CYE. Her pedigree back to Blackrose is loaded with All-Americans:

All-American Junior 2 & Junior 3-Year-Old, 1992 & 1993

Back in the 1990s, Mark Rueth owned Blackrose with Bob Schauf (Indianhead Holsteins) and Mark Van Mersbergen (Markwell Holsteins). The three partners would take turns selecting their first choice of any matings, and when Blackrose (who was a red carrier) was flushed to Kinglea Leader, a *RC sire known for good milk production, dairyness, and good udders, it just happened to be Mark’s turn to pick first.

It was a fortuitous choice. Rosedale Lea-Ann eventually became an EX-93 Gold Medal Dam, and Mark points to her as the branch on the family tree that has produced so many good cows. “Blackrose had lots of power and strength, and we quickly saw that Lea-Ann was breeding on tremendously. We kept most of the Lea-Ann stuff for ourselves, but when we had our dispersal in 2017, we finally sold most of those descendants,” says Mark.

So with all those generations of cows bred by Rosedale, how did CYE end up with the Ladyrose prefix? It’s another moment of serendipity in our story. Mark remembers that Frank & Diane Borba had purchased a first choice pick, but the flush didn’t yield a satisfactory choice. Mark & Nicky sorted through the heifer pens to find a replacement and found a standout calf in Rosedale AchieversLegacy, a Doorman daughter of their AllAmerican 5-Year-Old, Rosedale Lexington.

Everyone agreed to partner on the heifer, and their faith was borne out when Legacy calved in with a tremendous udder, won the Milking Yearling class at Madison on her way to being

named All-American Milking Yearling in 2017. That same year, a full sister to Legacy, Rosedale Catch A Glimpse-ET, was the winning winter yearling and Junior Champion at Expo as well - a real coup for Lexington.

Unfortunately, Legacy was lost as a three-year-old and only left five daughters, but all five are VG or EX: one by Avalanche at EX93, one by Unstopabull at EX-93, and three Unix daughters, one at VG-88, and two at EX-94, including CYE. Those offspring carry the Ladyrose prefix (a combination of the Borba’s MB-Luckylady and the Rueth’s Rosedale monikers).

When the selections were being made for the 2020 RuAnn Fiesta Sale, Mark offered the Unix daughters, and CYE was the pick of the pen. Shortly afterward, genomic results came back on the heifers and CYE had a crazy high type number - she was the #1 Unix daughter for type, and the #13 type heifer. While it was a pleasant surprise, it wasn’t totally unexpected for Mark. “Good cow families come to the top of any system. People don’t remember that Blackrose was a top type cow in her day before they changed the index. We used Doorman as soon as he was released to get some more modern blood in the family, and then the Doorman x Unix cross that does seem to work really well,” Mark notes.

The RuAnn Fiesta 2020 sale is where the CYE story gains a much higher profile. It was there (just a day or so before the COVID shutdown), that she came on the radar of David Dyment and Sebastien Dion. “I have to give credit where it’s due,” says David. “Sebastien had spotted her as a potential purchase for our partnership, and wanted my opinion as I was at the sale. I thought she was the best heifer in the lineup, and she had that fantastic genomic type number as well.”

They weren’t the only ones that spotted CYE though, and when she came into the ring, the bidding was spirited. “We thought she would bring about $25,000 and decided we were good with that,” remembers David. “Sebastien was on the phone with me, but at $32,000 I hung up on him because the waters were getting deeper and I had to focus! At that point, I was in love with her and had decided we were buying her that day.”

Just three of the powerhouse dams behind Ladyrose Caught Your Eye, LtoR: AchieversLegacy (VG-89 2Y), Lexington (2E-95), and Blackrose (3E-96).

I believe Mark Rueth posted a picture of Caught Your Eye on Facebook before she sold in California. She looked phenomenal, and had the elite genomic numbers as well. Ever since Lexington proved to be more than just a show cow by having the Junior Champion and winning milking yearling in 2017, I’d always wanted a piece of the family.”

ETHAN MCMILLAN

The partnership dueled with contending bidder Arizona Dairy until the hammer came down at $45,000. “Was she over budget? Yes. But we thought she’d be extremely marketable with her high type number. She was a Unix / Doorman cross, which I really like, and the cow family behind her is just terrific,” enthuses David.

“After we bought her, Diane asked to stay in as a partner. I had owned cattle with Diane before and have a great relationship with her, so we agreed. We moved CYE to Wisconsin, and flushed her right away to Delta-Lambda. About a month later, with the COVID lockdowns in full force, we decided that a three-way partnership could be cumbersome, so Sebastien & I bought Diane out and split up the 15 Delta-Lambda embryos that CYE had made,” says David.

David & Sebastien kept ten embryos, and sent five to Diane in California. From those five embryos, Diane scored two home runs - the extremely popular AI sires MB-Luckylady Bullseye-ET and MB-Luckylady Eye Candy-ET! “I’m still wondering how she arranged that!”, laughs David. “But it’s been a thrill to be the cobreeder of those bulls and we got pretty lucky too as another one of those embryos became D2 Lambda Eyes On The Prize, who is a VG-89 two-year-old, nominated All-American Summer Junior 2-Year-Old, and a member of the All-American Produce of Dam! That’s quite a lineup from her very first flush.”

Diane agrees with that assessment. “We sold CYE just to clean up some numbers in our partnership with Mark and Nicky. She was a beautiful heifer, but how she’s bred on has been just remarkable!” They have another Lambda daughter that is VG-87 as a three-year-old; a VG-85 Summerfest that has some fancy calves; and an AOT Honour heifer that is due in June to Hulu that carries a +4.21T number. They also have several show age calves out of full and maternal sisters to CYE. “The whole family is just so exciting. We’re really happy to be working with her daughters and granddaughters,” shares Diane.

The D2 partnership of Dyment and Dion flushed her to DeltaLambda, Summerfest, and Destiny. “We didn’t overwork her as

a heifer because we thought she could calve in as something really special,” notes David.

And that’s just what happened when she freshened in April 2021. Mike & Julie Duckett were hosting a high-profile sale - the Duckett Summer Selections Sale - at their farm in early June, and CYE was perfectly poised to be a headliner in that event.

There was plenty of interest in the stylish young cow. Not only did she look good enough to uphold the All-American lineage in her pedigree, the genomic numbers on her Delta-Lamba sons came back shortly before sale time, when the Borbas profited from sending Eye Candy to Select Sires and Bullseye to Semex. Now housed at Ducketts, she scored VG-89 EX-MS the week before sale and the phones started ringing about her potential. She had plenty of admirers and plenty of hands in the air when she circled the sale ring. As the bids climbed over $150,000, the action slowed, and in the end the partnership group of Kingsway Farm, Millen Farms, and Riverdown Holsteins put their names on the sale slip for $156,000.

Ethan McMillan had been following CYE since she was a heifer. “I believe Mark Rueth posted a picture of Caught Your Eye on Facebook before she sold in California. She looked phenomenal, and had the elite genomic numbers as well. Ever since Lexington proved to be more than just a show cow by having the Junior Champion and winning milking yearling in 2017, I’d always wanted a piece of the family,” details Ethan.

“When I saw she was a headliner on the Duckett sale, I called two people: Jason Millen and Justin Velthuis. They both said yes right away on trying to buy her. Frankly, we spent over our agreed price that day. If it wasn’t for Mike Duckett coming over when she was almost sold and giving us one last piece of advice, we wouldn’t have owned her,” Ethan admits.

CYE stayed at Duckett Holsteins as her new owners’ plans included showing her at World Dairy Expo. She was in the perfect spot to IVF and develop for the fall show season. “We flushed her to some US genomic bulls like Homecoming, Hanans, and Handshake, and then did her to Alligator one time,” recalls Ethan.

Her first trip to Madison was a triumph as she won the junior 2-year-old class and was pulled for Intermediate Champion. As a cow that just kept doing everything right, it wasn’t long before another potential buyer came knocking. “About a week after Madison, Justin called and said, ‘Hey bud - Bill Rauen wants a price on Caught Your Eye.’  It didn’t take too long to strike a deal to sell her along with all of her pregnancies except her only two Alligator pregnancies. We are always super happy when someone buys something from us and has great success. I can speak for all of our partners and say we are so happy to have been involved with such a tremendous cow for a small period of time,” says Ethan. “Before we bought her, David Dyment told us that great deals keep on winning and bad deals keep on losing. This definitely was one of the great deals!”

DAVID DYMENT

The Genosource group out of Iowa has held the CYE reins since the fall of 2021. Now housed at Budjon Farms, working on a record of 34,139M 4.5% 1433F 3.2% 1063P, she has returned twice more to Madison, and twice more has won her class at the International Holstein Show. She is now a three-time AllAmerican in milking form, just adding more and more titles to the Blackrose family resume.

Like her other previous owners, CYE had captured the attention of the Genosource crew. “She came on our radar really early on. Her phenotypical and genotypical package was one we hadn’t seen since Apple, which was something to say in itself. Once we saw her in milking form, we decided we would try to purchase her and add her to our program,” says Tim Rauen. “Caught Your Eye has done everything we could have asked for, she’s a 3X World Dairy Expo class winner, she’s created success for her past owners and is creating opportunities for other dairy breeders in the industry. Between her daughters and now her sons, her legacy has just begun, she’s truly a once in a lifetime kind of cow.”

Not surprisingly, Genosource has mated her aggressively to both high type and high genomic index sires. She now has offspring on the ground by Hustle, Luster-P, Parfect, Chief, Dropbox, Havenofear, and Thorson. With a full schedule in the flush chute, CYE will have a busy 2024 making embryos, with plans to calve her again in the spring of 2025. Genosource shared in the show ring fun with some heifers that resulted from those purchased pregnancies - Looks Matter, Caught By Surprise, and the HM All-American Junior Best Three all campaigned under the farm banner.

Remember those two Alligator pregnancies that stayed in Canada? One of those heifers, Kingsway Caught A Vibe, born April 25, 2022 would make her way to Madison herself where she won the Spring Yearling class and was tapped as Junior Champion of the 2023 International Holstein Show.

Now owned by Kingsway Farms and Velthuis Farms, Vibe is fresh and recently scored VG-87 as a 2-year-old in Canada - the maximum score. “Vibe is the dam of two bulls going to Showbox Sires by Zoar and Lambda, and has some really exceptional heifers by Zippy, Zoar and Lambda. We, along with our partners at Velthuis Farms are very excited about her future!,” exclaims Ethan. “We love our Eye Candy and Bullseye heifers. I think they will dominate the show ring, and are great everyday animals.  Caught Your Eye blood is like a cheat code to the show ring.  She’s one of the most potent cows I’ve ever seen.”

If there’s one consistent message heard over and over about CYE from all of these respected breeders, it’s about the continuing potential of the family. No one would know better than Mark Rueth, “This family just breeds true. With their strength, power, and style, you can use a lot of different sires. They just seem to stay over +3.00T with the possibility of a +4.00T animal at any

time. People have lots of success with them, and everybody seems to want to get back into the family again.”

David Dyment echoes Tim Rauen’s comparison to KHW Regiment Apple-Red. “What Apple did for the red business, this cow could do on the black & white side for type. 19TH ANNUAL JERSEY CONTEST The Jerseys Keep On Coming!

Another big year of entries in the Jersey All-American contest highlights the continuing enthusiasm for the showring by breeders and owners of the ‘little brown cows’. For the second time, we received more entries for the Jersey contest than the Holstein. Outstanding breed shows in Madison, Louisville and Toronto led to a very competitive competition with judge’s votes assessing the variance in placings across those three show. We’re of the opinion that having multiple shows that carry significant weight in the contest is a wonderful thing and makes for close votes totals in deciding the All-American winners at year end.

In December, a seven-person committee deliberated over the entries to select the six nominees for each class which were published in the Late Winter 2024 issue of Cowsmopolitan. A ballot was then sent to a larger panel of 14 judges, who each placed a vote for first, second, and third in each class. (In classes where there was a potential conflict of interest for an

The panel for the 2023 contest included: Mike Berry, Alta Mae Core, Louie Cozzitorto, Kevin Doeberiener, Mike Duckett, Ryan Krohlow, Kevin McGriskin, Callum McKinven, Terri Packard, Mark Rueth, Keith Topp, Phil Topp, Andrew Vander Meulen, and Ryan Weigel. We thank them for their expertise and deliberation in placing their votes on the ballot.

In the contest wrap-up, we recorded eight unanimous All-American choices: DKG Gentry Cream (Spring Yearling), Miss Gayles Grace (Winter Yearling), Lookout Joel She’s Spicy (Junior 2-Year-Old), Lone Pine Jordan Booster (Senior 2-Year-Old), Oeh-My Victorious Parade (Senior 3-YearOld), Stoney Point Joel Bailey (Aged Cow), Bri-Lin VAlson Spritz (Lifetime Production Cow), and the Senior Best Three group

Americans (four heifers, one cow) to lead the sire list for the first time. Guimo Joel came next with two All-Americans and three Reserves (four cows, one heifer). Other sires with multiple winners include River Valley Victorious, River Valley Venus VIP, Sunset Canyon Andreas, Rapid Bay Indiana Gentry, and and Chillis Action Colton.

Vierra Dairy of Hilmar, CA had yet another successful year and topped the exhibitor list with seven All-American owned solely and one in partnership. Big Guns Cattle Co. bred two All-American individuals, one All-American group and one Reserve All-American group to lead all breeders.

Resilience in the Barnyard

Charting Success Through Generations of Dedication

Life’s journey is an unpredictable ride, filled with twists, turns, and the unexpected kindness of those who genuinely wish us well. In the dairy cattle industry, success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the culmination of endless hours spent in barns, traveling to shows and sales, and strategizing for the future. We’re surrounded by hard-working peers who both challenge and support us, creating bonds that span generations and extend beyond bloodlines. For those truly dedicated, success emerges from decades of trials, setbacks, and perseverance, occasionally blossoming into a gratifying success story.

That circuitous route well describes the journey of Mena Schmitt from Maunesha Creek Farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Mena, daughter of Cindy and the late Brian Schmitt, divides her time between her farm and her role as a Genetic Service Specialist at ST Genetics, where she collects and processes genomic data. Maunesha Creek Farm, named after the waterway that meanders through its acreage, has been farmed by seven generations of the Schmitt family since its establishment in 1845. The farm encompasses 350 acres of cash crop land, and is managed by Mena’s brothers, Alex and Evan. Mena grew up with her family’s Guernsey herd, working alongside her parents and brothers on the farm originally owned by her grandparents, Florence and the late Robert Schmitt.

dispersal. In exchange for milking about a dozen of their Milking Shorthorns, Cindy Schmitt houses calves and replacement heifers for the Baerwolfs in the barns at Maunesha Creek.

“I was destined to be a Guernsey girl,” Mena reminisces, tracing her family’s affinity for the breed. However, that future changed when her grandmother, Florence Schmitt, purchased a Milking Shorthorn calf in 2008 for Mena’s cousin. The calf, Northstar H-R Dapper Music-ET, was too big for her cousin to handle, and thus became Mena’s project animal. In 2009, Mena showed Music at World Dairy Expo. Though they finished in the middle of the class, that experience ignited Mena’s passion for the breed, bringing Milking Shorthorns to Maunesha Creek and beginning the phase out of the Guernseys at the farm.

Tragedy struck in 2012 with the untimely passing of Mena’s father, Brian. Forced to make tough decisions, they sold many cows but retained a handful of Milking Shorthorns, which found a new home with the Baerwolf family, owners and operators of Sassy Cow Creamery. The Baerwolfs not only provided a haven for the cows, but also extended unwavering support to the Schmitts in their time of need.

Still fueled by her passion for the breed, Mena set out to breed elite Milking Shorthorns. Drawing inspiration from prominent herds like Lazy M Farm, she selected animals with exceptional pedigrees to add to her small nucleus of females. It took a few years, but Maunesha Creek celebrated its first World Dairy Expo class winner in 2018 with Maunesha Creek Made In Mexico, a heifer descended from Music, that first Milking Shorthorn purchase. Made in Mexico went on to be named the All-American Spring Calf in 2018.

Music’s daughter, Maunesha Creeks Poker Miracle, was Junior All-American Fall Yearling in Milk in 2012 for Mena, and went on to become an Excellent cow. More subsequent winners from the family include Maunesha Creek Patriot Munchkin EX-90, several time All-American or Junior All-American.

The Music cow family has built a deep pedigree for Mena. Music scored VG-87, her dam is VG-86, her granddam is Horizon-Tudor Margarita-EXP-ET EX-95 4E, who was the Reserve All-American 5-Year-Old in 2003, and her 3rd dam is Viking Valley Star Megg EX-94 4E. Mena is appropriately proud of the family, which now boasts a fourth generation Excellent milking daughter.

Another cow family that is making a mark in the herd is Lazy M Pirelli Excitement EXP EX-93 4E. She was the Unanimous Junior All-American Fall Calf in 2013, and has given Mena a decade’s worth of fancy offspring. Her daughters include Maunesha Creek Easy On The Eyes, a VG-86 2-year-old sired by Winston that was the Unanimous All-American Winter Yearling in 2021 and Junior Champion of the Junior Show at World Dairy Expo. A Lars daughter of Excitement, Maunesha Creek Excite Me EXP, was named the All-American Fall Calf in 2023, following her Expo titles of Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show, and Junior Champion of the Junior Show.

The Music and Excitement families are creating the next generations for Maunesha Creek. Easy On The Eyes has an outstanding March calf, and will be flushed to make more fancy daughters. Maunesha Creek Hey Mate EX-90, a granddaughter of Miracle, completes 7 generations of VG and EX, and is the dam of Maunesha Creek Hey Its Maisy, a Lars daughter that was the winner of the spring yearling class at the 2023 Winter National show in Louisville. Mina is planning to flush Hey Mate as well and hoping to create the next generation of high-scoring cows.

In addition to breeding and developing show winners, Mena has also been committed to marketing her genetics. She relies on a combination of live sales and social media as the platforms for selling. Sales such as Generations of Gems hosted by Valley Gem Guernseys, the KCCK Sale and the Pioneer Dairy Classic are among the list of sales that feature genetics from Maunesha Creek. “Promoting my genetics is something that I believe there is value in, not only does it help fund the IVF and flush work that I’m doing, but I think it’s really cool to see my animals in the ring at shows and watching the success others have from my breeding is an incredible feeling.”

Speaking of success with Maunesha Creek genetics, Mena has developed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Brandel family of Lake Mills, Wisconsin. First introduced at the 2014 Wisconsin State Milking Shorthorn Sale, where both the Schmitt family and the Brandel family left the sale with spring calves, Mena learned a lesson on pedigrees in the years to come as she watched the calf that the Brandel family purchased - Maple Fudge Of 12 Oak EX-96 - go on to be win several champion rosettes at World Dairy Expo, in both the junior and open shows.

In 2020, the two families began showing cattle together. Mena saw the work ethic of the Brandel family and the drive in the Brandel kids was undeniable. When Mena aged out of showing in junior show, she approached the Brandel family to see if they would have any interest in leasing cattle from her to show. This has proven to be an amazing adventure for both parties. “I don’t need to be the one in the ring,” states Mena. “The Brandel family does an incredible job preparing cattle for shows and they are exceptional showmen.” In fact, in 2023, Justin Brandel led Manuesha Creek Excite Me-ET to the Junior Champion title in the International Milking Shorthorn Junior Show, and Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show. Shortly after the show, the heifer was sold to Peter Vail, and the Schmitt and Brandel families are looking forward to seeing her back on the colored shavings in 2024.

As Maunesha Creek’s herd expands and new bloodlines are introduced, Mena remains steadfast in her commitment to excellence. Despite the limited options for breeding bulls in the Milking Shorthorn breed, she utilizes IVF technology and genomic testing to advance her genetics. Selling heifer calves and embracing genomic testing are standard practices for Mena, who believes in staying ahead of the curve for the breed’s future.

In the serene pastures of Maunesha Creek, where Guernseys once roamed, Mena’s continuing journey with Milking Shorthorns serves as a testament to the power of passion and determination in good times and bad.

MORE SHOWS, MORE JUNIORS, MORE JOY!

Entries for the Junior All-American Holstein contest were once again recordbreaking in 2023. Every class had at least six entered, with some classes having as many as 16 entries! Hats off to the Juniors, their parents and show crews that helped them excel throughout the show season.

Our junior members bred, bought, fitted, and marketed some superb individuals and the contest reflects their attention to detail throughout the year! As a testament to this outstanding quality, there was an impressive 17 animals from the junior contest that also received Open nominations! The Junior AllAmerican Holstein contest is in its’ 73rd year, and every year it’s a real joy to notify those who received a Junior AllAmerican nomination or year-end title!

Following the nominating committee meeting in December, ballots with the nominated animals were sent out to a larger voting panel in order to mirror the process of the Open Holstein contest. This panel was instructed to keep three things in mind when voting – the quality of the photograph, their personal knowledge of the animal, and the animal’s junior show placings. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of their votes and thank them for their expertise in assisting with this contest.

The nominees in this year’s contest come from 23 different states and one Canadian province. Perennial powerhouse Wisconsin blew the doors off this year with 33 nominations, followed by Illinois with 12, New York with nine, and Minnesota and Iowa each with six.

Farnear Delta-Lambda-ET led the sire pack with 10 nominations. Woodcrest King Doc followed with eight; Walnutlawn Sidekick garnered seven nominations and Brenland Denver tallied six nominations. Braedale Goldwyn and Croteau Unix where the only sires with multiple Junior All-American, each with two.

Year in and year out, we’re impressed by the professionalism, sportsmanship, and dedication of our junior exhibitors. Thank you to the parents, families, and mentors who enable these kids to gain experience at local, state and national shows. Every level brings its own lessons, and we love to see the progress of our young enthusiasts from year to year. OUR BIGGEST JUNIOR JERSEY CONTEST YET!

With year 7 of the All-American Junior Jersey contest complete, we saw more entries, more states, and more juniors participate than ever before. This year’s contest highlighted the best of the best junior cattle across the U.S.

Junior members continue to exhibit high caliber cattle, standing head-to-head with their senior counterparts each year. Juniors exhibited an impressive 24 entries that were also nominated in the open division as well.

Once again this year, ballots with the nominated animals were sent out to a larger voting panel in order to mirror the process of the open Jersey contest. The judges were put through their paces to

decide their votes as top-quality junior shows took place across the country throughout the year, and a number of animals didn’t necessarily meet head-tohead in the fall.

As always, the panel was instructed to keep three things in mind when voting – the quality of the photograph, their personal knowledge of the animal, and the animal’s junior show placings. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of their votes and thank them for their expertise in assisting with this contest.

The nominees in this year’s contest come from 18 different states. Wisconsin once again led the contest with 22 nominations,

followed by Pennsylvania with 15, New York with 2 and Illinois with 9.

Mr Kathies Kid Rock led the way in the sire race with 13 total nominations, with four title awards received. River Valley Venus VIP followed with 10 nominations. He also sired the most Junior All-Americans with three class winners. River Valley Victorious sired eight nominees, with six of those receiving title recognition.

ALL-CANADIAN HOLSTEIN AND RED & WHITE CONTESTS 2023

The 2023 All-Canadian contest marks the third year that Holstein Canada has sponsored and organized the contest after taking it over from the Holstein Journal, who founded and conducted the competition from 1942 through 2019.

After claiming both Premier Sire titles at the National Holstein Show and named the Premier Heifer Sire at the International Holstein Show, it comes as no surprise the leading sire of All-Canadian nominations was Farnear Delta-Lambda-ET. He led the way with 11 total nominations, including three All-Canadians and an additional four more daughters named Reserved or HM. Walnutlawn Sidekick and Croteau Lesperron Unix tied for second, each with nine nominations. Unix does have the slight edge with four daughters earning title recognition, while Sidekick only had three. Golden-Oaks Master-ET followed closely behind with eight

This year, three breeders share pole position in terms of the number of nominations, each holding five nominations + one group nomination.

Ferme Jacobs bred the most All-Canadian titles with three individual class winners and the All-Canadian Breeder’s Herd. John Werry of Load-de-Mede Farms bred a Reserve and HM All-Canadian with three other nominations. His Junior Breeder’s group also took home HM honors. Finally, Gordon McMillian and Kingsway Farms bred one AllCanadian and one Reserve All-Canadiana and had three additional individual nominees along with their Junior Breeder’s group.

This year’s leading breeder of All-Canadian Red & Whites is Karnview Farms Inc. They bred six total nominees, with one named All-Canadian and another earning a Reserve title. Two additional breeders each secured three nominations: Ferme Malic & Ponderosa Holsteins and Kozak Holsteins.

Three exhibitors tied each with four AllCanadian Red & White nominations: Clarkvalley Holsteins, Up-Ridge Holsteins and London Dairy Farms. Clarkvalley had three of their nominations earning title awards.

Swedish Holstein On-Farm COmpetition

There was no hockey involved when Canada met Sweden for an 11-day competition in late November 2023. This was in fact Sweden’s National Herd Competition - the annual on-farm cow judging program conducted by the Holstein Association of Sweden. Previously, judges from UK, NZ and US have judged the competition, and for the first time, the extensive (and intensive) program was judged by a Canadian - Gord Vande Burgt.

Sweden’s dairy cow population is just under 300,000, averaging just over 100 cows per herd on a land mass about 5% the size of Canada. Holsteins make up just over half at 56%, Swedish Reds come in at 30%, Jerseys about 1%. Swedish Hornless Mountain cattle, crossbreds and other breeds make up the balance of the country’s dairy cattle.

While Gord grew up a dairy boy in Dewdney, BC on Vandeburgt Farm, his career followed many paths to distant locations that connected to farming in one way or another, including banking to DeLaval sales. He currently does Marketing and Sales for Klop Equipment in BC, but in his somewhat distant past, he was a ‘cow guy.’

Following his degree at Dordt University, he went to work for Trans Ova Genetics in Iowa for four years developing the dairy side of their business. From 1994 to 2002, Gord operated his own ‘Genetic Connections’ business, exporting dairy livestock genetics globally, including to Sweden. “Twice a year I was invited to Sweden by breeding centres or maybe an ET vet, and I’d put on meetings and market Canadian ET genetics,” through which Gord explained his early connection with the Swedes.

While not an ‘official’ judge, Gord knew cows, pedigrees and had an eye for the good ones. He had clearly left a good impression back in Sweden, and they contacted him in late 2022 to gauge his interest in judging this national high-profile event. “I was a bit hesitant at first - I have been away from the genetics side of dairy for a while.” When he

finally made the commitment. June Petrali of Oroby Farms (their neighbour and his 4-H mentor) was the first one he told of the honor. “June contributed to my passion for genetics and judging through 4-H. I showed Oroby heifers too,” he reminisces.

“I arrived in Malmo, Sweden, on a train from Copenhagen airport crossing a bridge spanning water separating both countries. There was an orientation of the daily trip agenda that first night by Gill Zeilon, Sweden Holstein Association, over dinner,” Gord starts. There would be 45 herds to visit, with 43 of them presenting washed / clipped groups of three lactating cows to judge. Categories included Lactations 1 to 8, Overall Type, Udders, Feet and Legs, Presentation, Rookie Herd and more. “I took a lot of pictures and made a lot of notes to help me with this project,” Gord recounts.

“It is considered a real privilege for farms to participate in this competition, and establishing a professional, positive rapport with everyone was important. I was not allowed to ask about the sires or classification scores, but I enjoyed getting to know the farmers and it was natural to take an interest in their dairy operations,” Gord shares. On the first day, Ramshill Farm, milking 1000 cows in a 2x20 BouMatic parallel parlour, was just a soft ‘introduction’ farm visit before the actual judging would commence.

He saw a wide range of farmers and operations throughout the two week trip. A bit surprising was seeing recent Dutch immigrant farmers, like Gunshill, a 24-year-old who had taken over from an older farming couple, with their financial assistance. Boniteko was another Dutch family who had established 780 milking cows with three Lely robots. “There’s a strong trend towards robots, but there are still 30-50 cow herds milked in tie-stalls, but large herds (300+ cows) are milked in parlours.” Gutenid is one exception - they milk 360 cows with eight Lely robots.

“Stame Holsteins were milking 320 cows in a DeLaval parlour. They had lots of imported North American genetics.” Olasgard is Sweden’s highest organic production herd, milking 150 cows in a GEA parlour. The very nice 120-cow Norrabyn herd had utilized imported genetics from Canada.

Gord Vande Burgt’s judging on-farm judging trip lasted two weeks and took him to all corners of Sweden including Gotland Island, where there are 92 historic churches, some dating back to the 11th century!

Fine Swedish hospitality was on display throughout Gord’s two-week trip. Many farms offered coffee, lunch, and even mulled wine!

On day five, Gord went to prison - a men’s prison farm milking 60 cows in a tiestall. The female warden, dressed in black, led Gord to the cows, while a few armed guards stood watching. They are constructing a new freestall barn and milking parlour. “I was so impressed by Nastgarden - 760 cows in a De Laval parallel parlour, 14,600 kg (32,120 lb) average. It was an outstanding large dairy with one of nicest new freestall barns I’ve ever seen,” Gord expresses.

At one farm he encountered a Roxy cow family member that was descended seven generations from an embryo Gord sold many years ago!

It took a three-hour ferry ride at the end of day seven to reach Gotland Island - a place of great history and of great cows. Two days of judging here yielded the Top Udder overall for a young couple just getting started. One evening, Gord enjoyed a lovely dinner in historic Visby town with the local dairy farmers and their spouses.

From Stockholm on day ten, he flew to a northern region reminiscent of the Yukon - minus 25C temperatures, cold and snow, and they were delayed on the drive by a moose roadkill!

Back to Stockholm, Gard’s final visit was at Riala, a 55-cow Lely robot herd that sells milk through an automated bottle filling machine at their on-farm store. Due to their close proximity to Stockholm, they can’t keep up with demand for their fresh milk.

“My fifth Top Herd featured a pair of full sisters -one B&W and one R&W. The young lady was so humble - she had just returned from Italy where she had won a fitting competition!”

With multiple groups, multiple categories and multiple herds, it took Gord some time to analyze all his notes to narrow down the top awards with great care. “I selected the top five groups

“from the entire competition and ranked them 1 to 5, in addition to selecting the top 1st to 8th calvers from all dairy cattle seen.”

After much deliberation, Gord’s decisions on the Top Five Groups:

“It was really encouraging to witness so many enthusiastic young people! I shared with the Association that I saw a vast improvement in udder attachments from 20-25 years ago and they appreciated the observation. I saw a lot of outstanding modern dairies with great genetics. I enjoyed wonderful hospitality, traveling 5200 km through most of the dairy farming regions (500 +/- km daily), over an incredible two weeks.” Gord beamed. “High producing cows were entered in the competition and I was very pleased to see that - the great number of very profitable dairy cows I have saw during my tour. I felt very welcome at every farm, and enjoyed lovely conversations with the breeders after I had finished looking at each group of three. The wonderful Swedish hospitality was on display everywhere with great coffee, lunches, and even Swedish mulled wine at some farms!”

The story of High Lawn Farm begins in 1902 when Lila Vanderbilt Sloane married William Osgood Field. Lila’s mother, Emily Thorn Vanderbilt Sloane, gifted High Lawn to the newly married couple as a wedding present. Emily and William Douglas Sloane (who owned Elm Court) decided not to build them a city house as they typically did for their other children. Emily purchased 645 Fifth Avenue, built by Emily’s brother, George Vanderbilt (Biltmore). To make up for any difference in value in the purchased home vs the built homes for the other children; Emily and William threw in High Lawn.

On a side note, if you recognize the Sloane/Vanderbilt name in relation to Mrs. Diana Dodge Ryan of Vaucluse Farm, you are correct. The families are related and both sides were notable Jersey breeders on several farms. Diana Dodge Ryan was the daughter of Henry Thomspon Sloane. Henry’s brother was the notable William Douglas Sloane, Marjorie Wilde’s grandfather.

At this time, High Lawn was a Georgian-style Berkshire cottage sitting adjacent from the Elm Court estate. High Lawn had expansive farmland spanning three towns, as many of the summer estates of the area did at that time. Eventually, Lila and William had four children, one of them being Marjorie Field.

Marjorie Field spent her childhood years between the family’s home in New York City, and the summer months at the family’s High Lawn estate. Her parents had the ambition to start a registered Jersey dairy herd as they knew that Jersey’s produced rich, creamy milk; perfect for drinking as well as making butter. The Jerseys were popular amongst the Gentleman Farming estates of that era; both for their beauty and their utility. They were collectors’ items as well as valuable producers of high quality dairy products for the estates. There have been Jersey cattle on the High Lawn property since 1918.

Marjorie’s mother died in 1934 just shortly after Marjorie’s wedding to Colonel George Wilde. The newly married couple took over High Lawn with the desire to expand the farm. This was during the height of the Great Depression, and Marjorie had

the foresight to understand that the herd’s quality milk could benefit her local community. She strove to improve the herd through selective breeding; leading to a more productive cow that was healthier with increased longevity.

Marjorie became a student of the cattle within her barn. She could often be seen carrying her herd record books around the barns and pastures with her. In fact, in many photos, she can be seen holding those books. She would take notes as she strolled the herd which allowed her a later reference when making breeding decisions.

She devoted her life to the cattle of High Lawn and the growth of the farm, ensuring that their care took top priority. She knew every cow, their pedigree and their offspring and could recite the information on the spot when asked. She became a world-renowned pioneer of the Jersey cow and the advancement of production within the breed; most notably through the bulls that High Lawn developed. Under her guidance, High Lawn would become the largest Registered Jersey herd in New England by 1960.

Marjorie’s vision was a Jersey cow who was healthy and superior in component and milk production while conformationally balanced in her type-profile with good udder attachments, ideal teat placement and moderate stature. They were not ultraangular, fine boned, thin tailed, thin hided cattle. They were not show cattle; but instead, balanced and profitable Jerseys who didn’t sacrifice the traits desirable within the breed. Throughout her lifetime, High Lawn genetics had been shipped to India, New Zealand and as far away as South Africa.

This all occurred during a time frame when farm management, breeding decisions, and respectable agriculture opinion was strictly for men. Marjorie paved her path with her beloved herd of Jersey cows and became one of the most iconic figures in the foundation of the breed throughout the 20th Century.

Marjorie sourced early genetics from the herd of Hillside Farm in Shelburne Falls, MA. Hillside was developed by Joh T. Carpenter and his sons, John Jr and Raymond. John Jr would later become a partner in the cattle photography business with Harry Strohmeyer. Abigail of Hillside, bred at Hillside, was the first Jersey to produce over 20,000 pounds of milk in a lactation and the cow family was successful in transmitting their ability to produce. Marjorie sourced the foundation of her “Patricia” family from the Hillside herd.

M.G. Torono’s Betty would become one of the more significant purchases of the farm who would be bred to Josephine’s Abigail Lad at High Lawn. This cross would produce High Lawn Torono Siegfried who was the prominent sire behind the early production of the herd; most notably the cow Siegfried Pride who became a national production champion and a favorite of Marjorie’s. The other notable Siegfried daughter was Siegfried Military Secret who was crossed with Welcome Volunteer to produce the outstanding bull, Welcome High Lawn Torono.

Other notable purchases were Lilac’s Remus from Oregon, and the bull Welcome Volunteer and his daughter, Welcome Lady Jean from Texas. Jean gave birth during the trip, producing Observer Signal Lady Jean. Lady Jean would be bred to Welcome High Lawn Torono and in 1953 produced the outstanding sire; Secret Signal Observer. Lady Jean ranked in the Top 5 of the 2000 Greatest Cow Contest and is often referenced as the cow who changed the breed. Secret Signal Observer would go on to sire sons like Observer Chocolate Soldier and SS Quicksilver of Fallneva.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the genetics of High Lawn is the influence of fellow New England herds; like Hood Farm, Hillside, Folly Farm and Bridgham Farm in the foundation

of the High Lawn cow families. Subsequently High Lawn’s influence on fellow New England herds circled back years down the road.

Marjorie and the Colonel both went on to become Master Breeder Award recipients from the ACJA, the Colonel in 1960 and Marjorie in 1977. They would later receive the National Dairy Shrine’s Distinguished Breeder Award in 1978; they were the first Jersey breeders to be awarded this prestigious award.

Thanks to the devotion of Marjorie to the Jersey breed, nearly 80% of Jersey cattle in North America can trace their pedigrees to High Lawn. Marjorie passed in September 1997, but her influence will forever be felt at High Lawn and the genetics that have left a lasting impact on the Jersey breed.

Today, High Lawn is still proudly owned by the Wilde family. Operating on 1,600 acres of land, nearly half is farmland while the remaining property is preserved open space dedicated to keeping the Berkshires green. In 2013 the farm began the transition to robotic milking and a multi-million dollar renovation project commenced in 2015. The farm produces 100% of its dairy products which include bottled milk, cream, butter, ghee, ice cream and artisanal cheeses. In 2020, a year-round farm store was opened to sell their dairy products and their home-grown Angus-Cross beef. Genetically, the farm is focusing on A2 with the hope to be an entirely A2 herd in the near future. In 2023, High Lawn was selected as the Massachusetts Dairy Farm of the Year and was honored at Eastern States Exposition.

New England is often known as the foundation of the Jersey Breed in North America. Over the years, it has been a steadfast and trusted source for quality Jersey genetics that has not wavered in 170 years. In June 2024, the AJCA National Jersey Convention returns to New England in celebration of the incredible Jersey Cow and her deep roots here. High Lawn will be a feature tour during the convention. We hope to see you in June for this great event!

The sale ended with a tremendous gross of $952,500 on 54 lots. Topping the sale was Terra-Linda Tmbrne 12374-ET, selling for $165,000 to Peak Genetics. The top 150 GTPI heifer was sold my TerraLinda Dairy, Tulare, CA. She boasts genomic numbers of +3234 GTPI +1229 NM$, ranking her as the #2 Tamborine GTPI daughter and #4 NM$.
