Food & Eating Guide • The Thai people eat their food with rice. The experience of having a Thai dinner is communal eating. Many dishes are served for all to share and everyone at the table takes the food from these dishes and eats them with rice. Each person at the table does not get his or her own plate of the main dish .They will get a plate of rice and share all the dishes served at the table. It makes the meal more enjoyable because you can sample many more dishes. • Thai food is eaten with a fork and spoon. Even single dish meals such as fried rice with vegetables, or steamed rice topped with roasted chicken, are served in bite-sized slices or chunks obviating the need for a knife. Popular Thai Dishes TOM YUM - Traditional spicy soup with a strong lemongrass flavour. PAD THAI-Thai Style stir fry noodles available with veg/non veg options. KHAU PAAD-Fried rice prepared wok style. Note: Many of the Thai vegetarian dishes are prepared by using ingredients like oyster and fish sauce, while even the seed based sesame sauce can contain some animal extracts. The best places to find a true vegetarian meal in Bangkok, or anywhere else in Thailand is the local Indian restaurants. Several restaurants can be found in the Indian districts located on the western side of the Bangkok. • You can enjoy a pure vegetarian Thai lunch or dinner at any of the many international 4 or 5 star hotels. Tuk Tuk : Also known as 'Sam Lor' (three wheeled), Tuk Tuk's are open three-wheeled, open-air, motorized taxis, popular for short journeys. Fares must be negotiated in advance and are typically higher than taxi fares and also higher for foreigners than for Thais. The minimum fare for a journey of up to 3 kilometers is generally 30-40 baht. Beware of scams involving Tuk Tuks, particularly around popular tourist attractions. Remember, there is no such thing as a free ride. Taxi : Taxis come in funky colours like bright orange, red and even pink. Taxis using the meter charge a minimum of 35 baht for the first 3 kilometers, and approximately 5 baht per kilometer thereafter. It's better to flag down taxis that are already driving (the red light means empty); these will generally use the meter while parked taxis typically ask for higher fixed fares or will take you for the proverbial 'ride'. Bangkok Skytrain (BTS): The above-ground, electric BTS sky train has two lines that travel above Sukhumvit, Silom, Sathorn, and Phahonyothin roads. The routes connect Bangkok's leading hotels and major shopping areas such as Siam Square, Silom Road, Ratchaprasong, and Chatuchak Weekend Market. The fare ranges from 15-60 baht according to the distance One day pass costs THB 120. The trains run from 6 a.m. to midnight, daily with a frequency of 3 to 6 minutes or so. Bus: Public buses are plentiful and cheap, with a minimum fare of 7 baht between most destinations within metropolitan Bangkok. Air-conditioned buses have minimum and maximum fares of 10 and 22 baht, respectively. Airconditioned micro-buses charge a flat fare of 25 baht for all routes. Boat Bangkok is bisected by the Chao Phraya river and riddled through with waterways called "klongs" - it should come as no surprise that river ferries and water taxis are one of the most popular ways to get around town. The Chao Phraya river ferry running between Krung Thep Bridge and Nonthaburi charges between 10 to 20 baht. Some riverside hotels may provide their own waterway transport. The old district of Thonburi can be seen from its many klongs. Tha Chang landing, near the Grand Palace, serves as a major departure point for the long-tailed taxis servicing Thonburi.
