HELLO FELLOW BLONDE BREEDERS

BONJOUR, CHERS AMIS ÉLEVEURS DE LA BLONDE

I hope this message finds everyone having a successful calving season. Calving season is my favorite time of year. It is exciting to see the results of all of the plans with breeding that are made. For me it has become even more exciting since I began doing AI and embryo transplanting to widen the breadth of genetics in our herd. This year is especially exciting for us as we have used some new bulls that we have not tried before and we also have some cows calving earlier than usual so that we might have some older calves to show at the National in October.

J’espère que ce message trouvera tout le monde ayant une bonne saison de vêlage. La saison de vêlage est ma période de l’année préférée. Il est passionnant de voir les résultats de toute notre planification de reproduction que nous faisons durant l’année. Pour moi, c’est devenu encore plus excitant depuis que j’ai commencé à faire de l’insémination artificielle (AI) et de la transplantation d’embryon afin d’améliorer la génétique dans notre troupeau. Cette année est particulièrement excitante car nous avons utilisé de nouveaux taureaux que nous n’avions pas essayé avant et nous avons aussi quelques vaches vêlant plus tôt que d’habitude afin que nous puissions avoir des veaux âgés à montrer au National en Octobre.

Bull buying season is also upon us and we have had several bull tests run from British Columbia to Ontario this past winter. There is a good selection of bulls still available so give one of your local participating breeders a call to book your bull before they are all gone. In my opinion, the overall quality of the bulls available has been increasing year over year so good work to the breeders. We need to continue to get top quality blonde bulls out into commercial beef herds. We are in the process of investigating switching labs that we have our DNA samples processed at from Genserve in Saskatoon to Delta in Edmonton. We have already made the decision to move our DNA bank to Delta under a grant provided by the Canadian Beef Breed Council (CBBC). It will be catalogued and inventoried so that we know exactly what is there and if there is enough DNA in the remaining samples to do further testing. Many of the other main breeds have already made the switch to Delta so we don’t want to get left behind. Look for additional information within this edition of the Connection for more details. The board has been busy trying to make sure that we keep our finances in order and as such we have decided to adjust fees as they have not been changed in many years. This change was desperately needed to keep our revenue in check with our expenses and to allow us to continue to offer programs such as the advertising program to our breeders. Don’t forget the National will be held in Olds, AB this fall and all the details you will need to start making plans can be found in this edition of the Connection. For the western breeders it is especially exciting as we do not have any other opportunity to bring out a complete show string of Blondes within a Blonde only show close to home. We are hoping to have a few new faces make appearances in the show ring this time around as well. The Alberta Association will do its best to put on a first class weekend. If you are planning on coming from out of province and you have any questions or need to make arrangements for animals give me a call and I will be glad to help out in any way I can. Once again thank you to all of the breeders and advertisers for choosing the Connection as your avenue to show off what our breed has to offer. I hope you enjoy this edition. C’est déjà le temps des achats de taureau et l’hiver passé nous avons eu plusieurs tests de taureau de la Colombie-Britannique à l’Ontario. Il y a une bonne sélection de taureaux toujours disponibles alors appelé les éleveurs participants locaux pour réserver votre taureau avant qu’ils ne soient tous partis. Pour moi, la qualité globale des taureaux disponibles a augmenté d’année en année alors félicitations aux éleveurs. Nous avons besoin de continuer à obtenir des taureaux Blondes de qualité supérieure pour nos troupeaux de boucherie commerciaux. Nous sommes à étudier la possibilité de changer de laboratoire ou nous envoyons nos échantillons d’ADN de GenServe à Saskatoon pour Delta, Edmonton. La décision a déjà été prise de déplacer notre banque d’ADN à Delta avec une subvention prévue par le Canadian Beef Breed Council (CBBC). Ils seront catalogués et inventoriés afin que nous sachions exactement ce que nous avons et s’il y a suffisamment d’ADN dans les échantillons restants à faire d’autres tests. Un petit rappel que la Nationale se tiendra à Olds, Alberta cet automne et que tous les détails dont vous aurez besoin pour commencer à faire des plans peuvent être trouvés dans cette édition de la Blonde Connection. Pour les éleveurs de l’Ouest, il est particulièrement intéressant que nous aurons l’occasion d’organiser un spectacle complet de Blondes et seulement des Blondes près de la maison. Aussi, nous espérons voir quelques nouveaux visages dans l’arène. L’Association de l’Alberta fera de son mieux pour organiser un week-end mémorable. Si vous avez décidé de venir de l’extérieur de la province et vous avez des questions ou besoin de prendre des dispositions pour les animaux n’hésitez pas à m’appeler et je serai heureux de vous aider de quelque façon que je peux. NEWS FROM THE PROVINCES News from ALBERTA & BC Most of Alberta is still enjoying a warmer than usual winter. With tighter feed supplies and lower quality feeds being utilized due to drought this past summer the warmer temperatures have been a welcome break. While cattle prices have declined somewhat since the highs of last summer, they are still high enough to provide much better than average margins for the cow/calf producer, and with animal supply remaining tight will hopefully hold into this fall. The Alberta Association will be hosting the 2016 National Show, Sale and AGM in Olds from Sept 30 - Oct 2, 2016. Once again we will hold it in conjunction with the Olds Fall Classic Beef Show. Olds is a wonderful little town about 45 minutes north of the Calgary airport. It is big enough to have all the services you need, but small enough to make it easy to navigate. The undertaking of this show always requires sponsors to make it a success, and sponsorship opportunities are now available. A tentative schedule and more details can be found elsewhere in the Connection. The Alberta Blonde Bull Test results as of the 56 day point are as follows;

leading the test is a Polled Fullblood son of “Pet” with an ADG of 4.14 lbs/ day. He is also tops in the WPDA category at 3.31 lbs/day. He was bred by Willow Springs Stock Farm and consigned by Upper Cache Blondes, who also has the second highest gaining bull on test. This Polled Fullblood son of WSS Warden 21W is gaining 4.10 lbs/day. Little Creek Farms has a Fullblood son of the import bull “Sauveur” gaining 4.07 lbs/day to take third spot. Bulls from Willow Springs Stock Farm take second and third spot for WPDA with Polled Fullblood sons of Crystal Youngblood (3.30 lbs/ day) and Roseneath William (3.27 lbs/ day). Full results are available on the Alberta & Canadian Blonde websites. Take the time to look the bulls up, and if you are interested don’t wait to inquire as many of the bulls are sold prior to the test concluding. L’Association de l’Alberta sera l’hôte pour l’Exposition Nationale 2016, la Vente et l’AGA à Olds du 30 septembre au 2 octobre 2016. News from MANITOBA & SASKATCHEWAN Hello out there! With careful management all is well as Man/Sask has had a very reasonable year in that we did get sufficient hay for our cattle and crops were adequate. As far as winter goes, so far it has not been as severe as it could be. The cow herd has not had to fight a lot of cold so any hay or grain fed is used for production, not body warmth. Anyone doing calving in January had a bonus in the temps as well. The cattle prices are still up there, the only thing that is not as good in price are the finished animals. They are leaving the lot heavier than usual because the feedlots are having trouble getting them to slaughter as people have slowed down on buying the higher priced cuts. To our advantage is the “country of origin” labelling requirement has been removed, giving Canadian beef a large base for marketing animals. Canadian beef is recognized worldwide as being premium with excellent reviews on quality control. The Sask. Ag Minister announced a bigger funding deal for livestock and forage research projects as this part of Agriculture has become more profitable than in previous years.

Last year, I had the privilege of meeting a family from Australia who ranches. They came to visit with the folks at the National in Ontario. He and his family thoroughly enjoyed talking to their Canadian counterparts here. We were comparing different strategies of raising cattle, taking into account the diversity by each others’ country and seasons. The Douglas test Station has six Blonde bulls in its stable this year. There are three from Forty Acre blondes and three from West Wind Blondes. The stats are available on the website at www.charlaisbanner. com or email bulltest@mynetset.ca. The sale is on April 2, the catalogue and video will be online as well. The Man/Sask yearly meeting will be after the sale in April. En ce qui a trait à l’hiver, à date elle aurait pu être plus dure. Les troupeaux de vache n’ont pas été obligé de se battre contre des grands froids alors le foin ou les graines sont utilisés pour la production et non pour se réchauffer. Pour ceux qui ont fait du vêlage en janvier ont eu de la chance avec la température. Les prix de bétail sont encore élevés, la seule chose qui n’est pas aussi bon en prix c’est les animaux finis. Ils partent plus pesants que d’habitude car les parcs d’engraissement ont de la misère à les envoyer à l’abattoir car la vente au consommateur a baissé en rapport avec les coupes plus dispendieuses. À notre avantage, le critère d’étiquetage du ‘’pays d’origine’’ a été enlevé, offrant au Bœuf Canadien une plus grande superficie pour la vente d’animaux. Le Bœuf Canadien est reconnu partout au monde pour être supérieur et a reçu d’excellentes critiques sur le contrôle de la qualité. Le Ministre de l’Agriculture de Saskatchewan a annoncé un meilleur programme de financement pour le bétail et recherche fourragères car cette partie de l’Agriculture est devenue plus profitable que dans les années passées. L’année passée, j’ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer une famille de l’Australie possédant un ranch familial. Ils sont venus

visiter avec leur parenté la National en Ontario. Lui et sa famille ont beaucoup apprécié les conversations avec leurs confrères Canadiens. Nous avons comparé différentes façons d’élevage de bétail en considérant les différences entre nos pays et les saisons. Il y a six taureaux Blondes à la station Douglas cette année. Il y en a trois qui proviennent de Forty Acre Blondes et trois de West Wind Blondes. La vente aura lieu le 2 avril et le catalogue ainsi que les vidéos seront en ligne aussi. Nouvelles du QUEBEC Bonjour chers éleveurs Blonde d’Aquitaine, L’hiver 2016 au Québec est pas comme d’habitude, nous avons des températures allant de +7 celsius à – 18 celsius. On ne se plaint pas autant que cette température n’affectera pas la production du réputé Sirop d’érable du Québec. Au moment que vous lirez ces mots, nous espérons que la commande de semences sera déjà placée et en chemin pour l’Ontario et le Québec. Depuis plusieurs années déjà, les éleveurs se sont intéressés à l’utilisation des semences de taureaux français et plus récemment des éleveurs ailleurs au Canada aussi. Cette pratique a rapidement contribué à augmenter le rendement des animaux en viande et en production de lait selon les critères choisis par les éleveurs. Le processus d’importation

n’est pas simple mais je crois que les efforts sont récompensés. Nous avons eu le plaisir de recevoir des éleveurs de l’Ontario à l’Expo Bœuf de Victoriaville en 2015. Ils ne sont pas partis les mains vides non plus. C’était très intéressant. Les comités représentant les associations d’éleveurs de bovins de boucherie travaillent fort à négocier/renouveler les ententes de financement annuelles que nous avions avec le MAPAQ. Dear Blonde d’Aquitaine breeders, We are having a very unusual winter 2016 in Québec, from one day to another we can go from +7 to - 18 Celsius. We are not complaining as long as it does not affect the production of our famous Quebec Maple Syrup. By the time you read these words, we hope that the semen order will be placed and already on its way to Ontario and Quebec. For several years now, breeders have focused on the use of French bull semen and more recently breeders elsewhere in Canada. This practice has contributed to rapidly increase the meat and milk production based on the breeders selections. The import process is not simple but I think the efforts are rewarded.

We had the pleasure of receiving Ontario breeders at Expo Boeuf Victoriaville in 2015. They did not leave empty handed either. It was very interesting. The committees representing the beef cattle breeders associations are working hard to negotiate / renew the annual funding agreements we had with MAPAQ. We hope for the best. News from ONTARIO & MARITIMES The Ontario board has been working very hard wrapping up our year end. We’ve also been planning for our AGM March 26, 2016 being held again at Bobby C’s in Bowmanville, Ontario. Registration begins at 11:00 and we’re hoping to get the meeting started for 12:00pm. With some proposed changes to our Constitution, we felt an earlier start may be required. A BIG thank you to our 3 Directors, Paul Fee, Paul Ferguson and Nicholas Boyd who have completed their 2 yr terms. Also, the President’s position will be up for election. Please submit your nominations to Paul Ferguson ASAP. Kirk McGee, Jeremy DeWeerd and Eric Doran are Directors who have another year left on the 2 yr term. I want to remind everyone to bring an item for our mini auction and the return of our famous pitchfork! We’ll need to get some engraving done on this item with past ownership inscribed on the handle, as in some cases possession never happened. The Ottawa Valley Farm Show is fast approaching. It is held at the EY Centre, 4899 Uplands Drive in Ottawa on March 8, 9, 10. Please contact Paul or Mary Ellen Ferguson if you are willing to help out on any of those dates to promote our breed! Your help would be greatly appreciated even if it’s for a few hours. We are also looking for someone to host our annual picnic this summer! It’s a great way to promote your farm

and breeding program. Please contact one of the board members if you are interested in hosting the picnic. The sales committee has made plans for our Cream of the Crop Sale for late October at Hoards Station. Everyone can be starting to think ahead of time on what animal they’ll have in top form for this year’s sale, maybe even to have the People’s Choice. I heard, John Langstaff was trying for the People’s Choice Award for the third year in a row! Get your entries in early so the sales committee can promote the sale and your animals. Please take advantage of a coop ad available in one of the numerous publications your board has chosen to promote the Blonde d’Aquitaine breed in for 2016. For more information contact Eric Doran or Kirk McGee, as they’d gladly assist you in promoting your farm and your Blondes! With the 2016 calving season well underway for most, I’m hoping it will be a great one! Maybe it’s that banner year for some! This past year I went to many different fairs including the Lindsey Ex and the Royal. The last 2 years I showed a yearling heifer named Van Bakel Blondes Buttercup. We are awaiting her calf during the month of January. With all of the shows I went to I had many adventures. At many shows my sister and I would lay with her and many people would ask me questions about her. Many kids came and petted her and my little cousin sat on her back. As September came my mom, sister and I took her to the Lindsey Ex and met many of the blonde breeders and had a lot of fun. This was my fourth year at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. I always enjoy meeting new people and having new competition with people from across Canada. This past year I purchased my first Blonde dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Aquitaine heifer, she is to be calving within this month. I am happy to be a part of the Blonde association and hope to meet lots of new people throughout 2016.

DNA Lab Change to Delta Genomics The Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association (CBDA) in co-operation with the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) has moved our DNA parentage testing service from Genserve/Quantum Labs in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Delta Genomics in Edmonton, Alberta. Twelve Canadian beef breed Associations were part of the transfer including the six largest in terms of registered animal population (Angus, Simmental, Hereford, Charolais, Limousin, Shorthorn). This change was initiated by a CBBC application for funding to create a “Biobank” of Canadian beef cattle genetic material. In order to create this Biobank they needed a lab that was interested in properly cataloguing and storing the thousands of samples held at Genserve/Quantum, and also had the ability/willingness to do further genetic research with these materials. Delta Genomics was that lab.

For those of you needing 1/29 Robertsonian Translocation testing the process will be similar. The lab will need prior notification just as it has in the past. Please notify Delta Genomics 2 weeks prior to the test so that they can be prepared. 1/29 testing will be sent to, and done at the University of Guelph in Ontario. For those of you in the West you can continue to use Genserve/ Quantum in Saskatoon. However a new DNA test for 1/29 (using hair or semen) has been developed in France and the blood karyotype method used in North America may not be needed any longer. When this test becomes available it will simplify the process and make it more cost effective.

SNP DNA TESTING

In conjunction with the change of labs the CBDA Board has also decided that we will change the type of DNA parentage test we are using for our breed. There are three main reasons we made this change. SNP testing is more precise and accurate than the current Microsatellite method, and we should have fewer problems matching offspring to parents. There have been several members that have had this problem in the last few years, and have not been able to register animals because of it. The SNP method is also $8/test cheaper, and the CBBC has received funding to transition beef breeds to SNP testing reducing the cost another $8 to $19 per test. The CBBC rebate is in effect until Jan 1, 2017. Lastly, SNP technology is used in creating Genomic profiles. Genomics is a whole other discussion, but it is basically doing a DNA test to see what the traits of an animal will be; ie: you could DNA test a 3 month old calf and know what the growth and milk production would be in advance. All animals born after Jan 1, 2016 that require a DNA test must have it done using the SNP method. We also strongly recommend that any DNA tests that you need for animals born prior to that date are done using the SNP method as that is the method that will be used moving forward. However, this change may/will require the re-testing of active Fullblood animals within your herd and also AI sires when possible. In many cases you will not need to send new samples, they can be pulled from the Biobanked samples at the lab provided there is enough DNA left. In the short term this will create extra costs to our membership, but in the medium term those costs will be recovered and in the long term lead to saving money. Here is an example: A herd has 10 fullblood cows and 1 fullblood herdsire that need to be converted to SNP DNA. The cost for animals already registered will be $25 - $8 for the CBBC rebate = $17/head. The total cost of updating this herd will be $187. Since SNP testing is $8/head cheaper you will have recovered the cost of the re-testing by the time you have DNA tested 24 offspring, grandoffspring, etc of these original eleven animals. Depending on how many animals you register each year this may take 3-5 years, however the savings continue into the future. The change of labs will have little effect on the process of registering animals for the CBDA membership - send registration applications to the CLRC, and they will return DNA forms to you. The only difference will be where you send your DNA samples; the new address will be on the DNA form.

The CBDA has been able to further reduce the price of transitioning your herd to SNP DNA testing to $10/head. Animals must already be registered and have a DNA number to be eligible. Members will need to submit a list of the animals they would like done in Excel Spreedsheet format, filled out electronically and emailed by July 1st, 2016 to Reed Rigney (rigney@ clearwave.ca). The form is available from Reed Rigney and required info is animal name, registration number and DNA number. All these things can be found on your registration papers or the CLRC website by looking up your herd inventory and selecting individual animals. Hand written or scanned lists will not be accepted. The initial tests will be done using DNA material already on file at the DNA lab, but in some cases members may be required to send a new DNA sample We strongly suggest that members collect a new hair sample from any parent animals prior to selling them, especially herd sires. Not all of the samples in storage will be useable. We are hoping to have all the testing complete by the early fall. If you need to register and DNA test animals before the SNP transition of the parents is done you can apply to the CLRC for a SNP/Microsat combo test. This test will cost $32 if done by Jan 1, 2017. This test uses Microsattelite DNA to parentage verify, but also creates a SNP DNA profile so that SNP testing can be used on the animal in the future. AI sires with DNA on file will be transitioned and paid for by the CBDA. Microsatellite DNA testing will be phased out rapidly and it is strongly suggested that members take advantage of this opportunity.

La seule différence sera où vous envoyez vos échantillons d’ADN; la nouvelle adresse sera inscrit sur le formulaire d’ADN. Le processus sera similaire pour ceux d’entre vous qui auront besoin du dépistage de la Translocation Robertsonienne 1/29. Le laboratoire aura besoin d’être avisé d’avance comme elle l’a été dans le passé. Veuillez aviser Delta Genomics 2 semaines d’avance afin qu’ils puissent être préparés. La demande de dépistage du 1/29 sera envoyée et fait à l’Université de Guelph en Ontario. Pour ceux d’entre vous dans l’Ouest, vous pouvez continuer à utiliser GenServe/ Quantum à Saskatoon. Par contre, un nouveau processus de dépistage d’ADN pour 1/29 (en utilisant les cheveux ou le sperme) a été développé en France et la méthode de caryotype sanguin utilisée en Amérique du Nord ne sera peut-être plus nécessaire. Lorsque cette procédure de dépistage deviendra disponible, elle permettra de simplifier le processus et de rendre les coûts plus efficaces.

PASSER A DES TESTS SNP En conjonction avec le changement de laboratoire le Conseil d’Administration du CBDA a également décidé que nous changerons le type de test d’ADN de filiation que nous utilisons pour notre race. Il y a trois raisons principales pour ce changement. Le test SNP est plus précis et exact que la méthode actuelle de microsatellites, nous devrions avoir moins de problèmes à regrouper la progéniture aux parents. Il y a eu plusieurs membres qui ont eu ce problème au cours des dernières années et n’ont pas été en mesure d’enregistrer des animaux à cause de cela. La méthode SNP est également 8 $/test moins cher et le CBBC a reçu un financement pour transférer les races à viande au SNP, ce qui réduit le coût d’un autre 8 $ à 19 $ par test. L’escompte du CBBC est en vigueur jusqu’au 1er janvier 2017. Enfin, la technologie SNP est utilisée dans la création de profils génomiques. La génomique est une toute autre discussion, mais essentiellement c’est un test d’ADN pour voir ce que les traits d’un animal seront; par exemple : vous pouvez faire un test d’ADN sur un veau âgé de 3 mois et connaitre ce que serait sa croissance et sa production de lait à l’avance. Tous les animaux nés après le 1er janvier 2016, qui nécessitent un test d’ADN devront être testés en utilisant la méthode SNP. Aussi, nous recommandons fortement que les tests d’ADN que vous aurez besoin pour les animaux nés avant cette date soient effectués en utilisant la méthode SNP puisque c’est la méthode qui sera utilisée à l’avenir. Cependant, ce changement peut/va exiger de refaire les tests sur les animaux fullblood actifs au sein de votre troupeau et également les taureaux d’IA lorsque cela est possible. Dans de nombreux cas, vous n’aurez pas besoin d’envoyer de nouveaux échantillons, elles pourront être prises à partir des échantillons de la Banque Bio du laboratoire, conditionnellement à ce qu’il y reste suffisamment d’ADN. À court terme, cela va créer des coûts supplémentaires pour nos membres, mais à moyen terme ces coûts seront récupérés et, à long terme, entraînera des économies. Voici un exemple: Un troupeau de 10 vaches fullblood et 1 taureau fullblood reproducteur qui doivent être converties en SNP ADN. Le coût pour les animaux déjà enregistrés sera de 25 $ - 8 $ l’escompte du CBBC = 17 $/tête. Le coût total pour la mise à jour de ce troupeau sera de 187 $. Puisque le test SNP est de 8 $/tête moins cher, vous aurez récupéré le coût de la mise à jour après avoir fait les tests d’ADN de 24 progénitures et de leurs progénitures, etc. de ces onze premiers animaux. Dépendant du nombre d’animaux que vous enregistrez chaque année cela peut prendre de 3 à 5 ans, mais les économies continuent dans le futur. Vous pouvez faire la demande du formulaire à Reed Rigney et l’information requise est le nom de l’animal, le numéro d’enregistrement et le numéro de l’ADN. Toutes ces informations sont sur les certificats d’enregistrement ou sur le site du SCEA en consultant votre inventaire de troupeau et en sélectionnant les animaux individuellement. Les listes écrites à la main ou scannées ne seront pas acceptées. Les premiers tests seront effectués en utilisant l’ADN déjà au dossier, au laboratoire d’ADN, mais dans certains cas, les membres peuvent être tenus d’envoyer un nouvel échantillon d’ADN Nous suggérons que les membres recueillent un nouvel échantillon de cheveux de tous les animaux parents avant de les vendre, en particulier les taureaux du troupeau. Pas tous les échantillons dans le stockage sera utilisable. Nous espérons avoir tous les tests complétés pour le début de l’automne. Ask him and he’ll tell you; he always wishes he was twenty years younger and could stay in the cattle business forever. It’s hard not to admire the attitude, especially when you consider just everything Shirley Bilton has been able to accomplish over his time in the breed. He is the last active pioneer of Blonde d’Aquitaine cattle in Canada. Having previously raised Shorthorns, Black Angus and Charolais, Shirley quickly became interested in Blondes after reading an article in the late 60’s regarding their calving ease, muscle, rate of gain and docility. When semen became available in Canada, Shirley purchased some, choosing to use Fantome in the beginning. Bilton Farms was off and running in the Blonde breed, a journey that has spanned 5 decades now. Always at the forefront and on the leading edge, Shirley embraced the breed and involved himself from the start. He was one of the original nine on the Interim Board that met in 1972 to form the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association. The following year in 1973 when the Association was officially formed, Shirley yet again found himself on the inaugural Board. Later that year, he would spearhead an initiative that would oversee the creation of a provincial Association in Alberta. Throughout the years, Shirley served a number of terms in various capacities on this board. At home on his farm, Shirley was starting to build his Blonde herd, In 1974 he purchased his first fullblood bull, Hector Bur Jo, who he drew semen on, and used

PIONEER. LEGEND. INNOVATOR. to breed to his Charolais cross cows. By the mid 70s, with his herd growing, Shirley formed a cross border partnership with Eldon Miller, an American breeder. This would be the first of many promotions Shirley would be involved with beyond the Canadian borders. In 1992, Shirley moved his farm south, from Innisfail, AB to Stavely, AB and in doing so began to operate under the name West Wind Blondes. By 1996, his

focus became on building a fullblood herd. In 1999, he yet again would break new ground, being the first person to ship a live bull from Canada to China. It should come as no surprise though, since Shirley has always been a leader within the breed. His willingness to embrace change, his vision for the future and his ability to meet market demands, have allowed him to enjoy much of these successes. When Blonde Bull Tests began, Shirley was a strong supporter, firmly believing in performance data. Since 2004, under the supervision of BIO, Shirley has ran and successfully completed on farm Bull Tests using ultrasound. BIO was also another program that Shirley was first to embrace. While he remained skeptical in the beginning, the West Winds herd is now synonymous with performance data. In 2005 the West Winds fullblood herd would take another step forward. After several animals had been tested over the years, Shirley would find out that his bull West Winds Rainier 11R was a homozygous polled fullblood. While there were also two other homozygous polled females in the same calf crop, Rainier would be a foundation for the West Wind herd to make the leap from fullblood herd, to polled fullblood herd. While Shirley had drawn semen on a few other bulls, Rainier had semen drawn and this would be a major step in expanding back outside the Canadian borders. While the Canadian interests in Blonde cattle had dwindled, interest across other continents still remained strong. Unfortunately since 2011, health has been a major concern for Shirley, which limited his on farm expansion. With interests still strong across the pond, Shirley’s work developing polled fullbloods allowed West Winds to thrive. A major milestone occurred in 2013 when Dr George Eller and his son from Blonde D’Aurach in Germany visited the farm and requested embryos and semen from some of the homozygous polled cows and bulls. Today, Blonde D’Aurach are the exclusive agents for West Winds genetics in Europe. Sadly in 2014, the physical demands of operating a farm were becoming too great for Shirley, alongside his partner Myrna Flesch. Age and health catches up to us all, and it was time to move on from the daily grind. He was very happy that a large number of his herd, was purchased by Dusty Acre Blondes of British Columbia. His major concern was that the herd for the most part would move as a stable unit. He is confident that his work and vision will carry on, as Dusty Acre’s Shellie continues her work with the herd. As I pen this article, West Wind Blondes continues on today, the large portion of their business now embryos and semen, which are sold throughout Europe, South America, Australia, the United States and Canada. It’s an absolute honor to see someone, through thick and thin, five decades later, in poor health but bright spirits,

still continuing to promote and carry on with the Blonde d’Aquitaine breed. Shirley Bilton was not only a pioneer, but he is a legend and innovator of the Blonde breed worldwide.

Lorsque les stations d’épreuves pour Blonde ont débutées, Shirley était un fervent partisan, croyant fermement dans les données de performance. Depuis 2004, sous la supervision de BIO, Shirley a fait et a accompli avec succès des tests de taureau à la ferme utilisant l’ultrason. BIO étant également un autre programme que Shirley a été un des premiers à y croire. Alors qu’il était sceptique au début, le troupeau de West Wind est aujourd’hui synonyme de données de performance. En 2005, le troupeau fullblood de West Wind prend un autre pas en avant. Après que plusieurs animaux ont été testés au fil des années, Shirley apprend que son taureau West Wind Rainier 11R était un fullblood sans cornes homozygote. Alors qu’il y avait également deux autres femelles sans cornes homozygotes dans la même récolte de veau, Rainier serait la raison fondamentale pour que le troupeau West Wind fasse le saut d’un troupeau fullblood à un troupeau fullblood sans cornes. Alors que Shirley avait retiré du sperme sur quelques autres taureaux, il a aussi retiré du sperme de Rainier ce qui a été une étape majeure dans l’expansion du marché à l’extérieur des frontières canadiennes. Alors que l’intérêt canadien pour les bovins Blonde avait diminué, l’intérêt dans d’autres continents restait fort. Malheureusement, depuis 2011, la santé de Shirley a été une préoccupation majeure pour lui et a limité l’expansion de sa ferme. Avec des intérêts toujours forts, le travail de Shirley à développer des fullbloods sans cornes a permis à West Wind de prospérer. Une étape importante a eu lieu en 2013 lorsque le Dr George Eller et son fils de Blonde d’Aurach de l’Allemagne ont visité la ferme et ont demandé des embryons et du sperme de certaines vaches et de taureaux sans cornes homozygotes. Aujourd’hui, Blonde D’Aurach sont les agents exclusifs pour la génétique West Wind en Europe.

Malheureusement, en 2014, les exigences physiques d’exploiter une ferme devenaient trop grandes pour Shirley aux côtés de sa partenaire Myrna Flesch. L’âge et la santé nous rattrape tous, et il était temps de sortir de la routine quotidienne. Il était très heureux qu’un grand nombre de son troupeau, a été acheté par Dusty Acres Blondes de la Colombie-Britannique. Sa principale préoccupation était que le troupeau, pour la plupart, demeurerait une unité stable. Il est convaincu que son travail et sa vision se poursuivra, avec Shellie de Dusty Acres qui continuera son travail avec le troupeau.

En 1992, Shirley déménagea sa ferme plus au sud, de Innisfail, Alberta à Stavely, Alberta et, ce faisant, a changé le nom de sa ferme à West Wind Blondes. En 1996, son but était d’avoir un troupeau fullblood. En 1999, il franchit un autre grand pas en étant la première personne à expédier un taureau vivant du Canada à la Chine. Il ne faut donc pas être surpris, car Shirley a toujours été un chef de file au sein de la race. This year we have decided to print the Trait Leaders for the more economically important traits that we measure in the Blonde breed, rather than the entire list of active sires. The Complete Sire Summary from 2014 and Active Sire Summary from 2015 are available on the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine website. In the past we have also only reported the percentage within breed rating and accuracy of the trait for each sire. Upon further assessment this may not have given our membership a true picture of the performance differences between sires. In this trait leader list we have ranked sires according to the actual EPD numbers, and also provided a breed average for active sires. There are a few things to keep in mind when looking at this information. Firstly we need to understand what the EPD means. In the case of BW, WW, YW and Milk the EPD is reported in terms of pounds. For example a sire with a WW of +51 will sire calves that are 18 lbs heavier at weaning than the average sire (WW of +33). A sire that has a Milk EPD of +33 will have daughters that wean calves that are 17 lbs heavier than the average sires daughters (Milk of +16). In the case of CE these numbers are expressed in terms of percentages in relation to first calf heifers.. A sire with a +6.4 calving ease will have 7.7% fewer assists at birth than the average sire (CE of -1.3). Secondly; these trait leading sires are in the top 20% of the breed in their specific traits, and the average sire is at the 50% mark. However a bull at the bottom 10% of the breed for WW & Milk still has an EPD of +23, and +10 respectively. This bull only has 10 lbs less of WW than the average bull

and his daughters calves are only 6 lbs lighter than the average sire. While the percentiles seem extremely different the actual real world results may not be that different. In the end EPD’s are very important to breed improvement, however so is selecting cattle with proper structure and eye appeal. Feet, legs, udder, teats, docility, fertility are all extremely important to profitability in the North American cattle industry. We need to balance EPD’s with correct phenotype, and the bull with the best numbers may not always be the solution to breed improvement.

Sommaire des meilleurs géniteurs de la Race

Cette année, nous avons décidé de présenter la liste des meilleurs géniteurs que nous évaluons en rapport avec les caractéristiques économiques plus importantes dans la race Blonde, plutôt que la liste complète des géniteurs actifs. Vous trouverez le sommaire complet des taureaux 2014 et le sommaire des taureaux actifs 2015 sur le site Internet de la Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine. Aussi, par le passé, nous inscrivions seulement le pourcentage du classement à l’intérieur de la race et l’exactitude des performances de chaque géniteur. En y pensant plus, cette façon de faire ne présentait peutêtre pas, à nos membres, une image réelle des différentes caractéristiques de chaque géniteur. Dans cette liste des meilleurs géniteurs nous avons classé les taureaux selon les chiffres réels des EPD et nous avons également fourni pour les taureaux actifs une moyenne de la race. Les points à considérer en regardant ce sommaire sont: Premièrement, nous devons comprendre ce que le terme EPD signifie. Dans le cas de BW, WW, YW et Milk (lait) les EPD sont inscrits en fonction de livres (lbs). Par exemple, un taureau avec un WW de +51 va engendrer des veaux qui sont 18 lbs plus lourd au sevrage que le taureau moyen (WW de +33). Un taureau qui a un EPD de Milk de +33 engendra des femelles qui sevront leurs veaux à 17 lbs plus lourds que les femelles de taureaux moyens (Milk de +16). Dans le cas des CE ces chiffres sont inscrits en termes de pourcentage par rapport aux génisses avec leur premier veau. Canadian Blonde FEE CHANGES by Reed Rigney

Membership, animal registration and other fees charged by the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) on behalf of the Canadian Blonde Association (CBDA) have not changed since the early 2000â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (nearly 15 years). Meanwhile the cost of operating the CBDA has increased, and we find ourselves needing to increase our cash flow to cover expenses. The CBDA Board investigated ways to increase monies available, but most of our costs are tied directly to the process of maintaining the Herdbook and promoting the breed. The professional fees we pay for operating the Herdbook and running the CBDA are fairly fixed and there is little opportunity for change in those regards. The Board also decided to maintain the breed promotion efforts we have in place; efforts such as the Newsletter, Blonde Connection, Performance Program and Promotional Grant Program for the Provincial Associations. After taking our options into consideration the Board has decided that fee changes will be in effect as of May 1, 2016. In the case of the transaction fee and the DNA fee these prices reflect the direct cost to the CBDA, and it is simply a fee to cover the costs of these items. The transaction fee is charged whether you send one item or twenty to the CLRC so you are best to send multiple items together. The base registration fee has not changed however animals will need to have applications made before 6 months of age in order to qualify (was previously 1 year of age). MODIFICATION DE LA GRILLE TARIFAIRE Depuis le début des années 2000 (presque 15 ans), il n’y a pas eu d’augmentation sur les frais d’adhésion, enregistrement d’animaux et autres frais qui sont facturés par la Société canadienne d’enregistrement des animaux (SCEA) pour le compte de la Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association (CBDA). Le Conseil d’administration du CBDA a étudié différentes façons pour augmenter les fonds disponibles mais la plupart de nos coûts sont directement liés au processus de maintien du Registre Généalogique (Herdbook) et la promotion de la race. Les honoraires professionnels que nous déboursons pour les opérations du Registre Généalogique et le bon fonctionnement du CBDA sont assez fixes et il y a peu de possibilités de changement dans ces égards. Le Conseil d’administration a également décidé de maintenir les efforts de promotion de la race que nous avons mises en place; des efforts tels que le Newsletter, Blonde Connection, Programme de performance et le Programme de subventions aux Associations Provinciales pour la promotion. Après avoir considéré toutes nos options le Conseil d’administration a décidé que les modifications tarifaires entreront en vigueur à compter du 1er mai 2016. Dans le cas des frais de transaction et les frais d’ADN, ces prix reflètent le coût direct au CBDA et c’est tout simplement le frais pour couvrir les coûts de ces services. Les frais de transaction sont pour un service ou vingt à la SCEA de sorte que vous êtes mieux d’envoyer plusieurs demandes ensemble. Les frais d’enregistrement de base n’ont pas changé mais les animaux devront avoir des demandes faites avant l’âge de 6 mois afin de se qualifier (était auparavant de 1 an). DUSTY ACRES BLONDES

Dusty Acre Blondes of Dawson Creek, BC made their first foray into the world of showing cattle at the 2016 Peace Country Beef Congress held in Dawson Creek Jan 8-9. After seeing one of their bulls a local veterinarian encouraged Shellie Wolfe and her daughter Kaylyn Rounds to enter some animals in the event. Having never broke an animal to lead, Shellie laughed it off , but told Kaylyn if she “worked her butt off” she could enter her Blonde cross 4H steer (Clifford). Well Kaylyn got to work on Clifford, and then it popped into Shellies head that if she had to sit there all weekend she might as well enter some of her bulls after all. So the next month they “lived” in the barn, and got five animals ready for the show - three bulls, the steer Clifford and Kaylyns 4-H heifer Claire. The last week before the show Shellie did not sleep well. When the animals were dropped off the night before the show she found it all a little crazy, and endured another sleepless night. Kaylyn showed Clifford and Claire the next day, and Shellie thought they did wonderful. Shellie commented “We stuck out like a soar thumb

because every other animal was red or black”. When day two rolled around Kaylyn got a crash course in clipping, and clipped all four of the animals that were showing that day. By this time Shellie was too tired to be scared or nervous and had quit shaking until she was called back for the Finals with her bull Colby. With the help of friends Brenda and Hunter as well as other exhibitors Shellie and Kaylyn made it through the weekend. She says “looking back it was a great weekend, we got to meet a lot of new people and they told us about some cool show tricks. We may not have won the prizes but to me we did win, we did not get drug around the arena, we did not have any tail twisting to get our animals going and most of all we got noticed”. Après avoir vu un de leur taureau, un vétérinaire local a encouragé Shellie Wolfe et sa fille Kaylyn Rounds à inscrire des animaux à l’événement. Ayant jamais

entrainé un animal au licouls, Shellie en a ri, mais elle a dit à Kaylyn si elle “travaillait très fort” elle pourrait inscrire sa Blonde Cross 4H (Clifford). Eh bien Kaylyn a commencé à travailler avec Clifford, puis Shellie a commencé à jongler que si elle devait s’assoir toute la fin de semaine à regarder, elle pourrait tout aussi bien inscrire certains de ses taureaux après tout. Le mois suivant, elles “vivent” dans la grange et préparent cinq bêtes pour le spectacle - trois taureaux, le bœuf Clifford et la génisse 4H Claire à Kaylyn. La semaine avant le spectacle Shellie n’a pas bien dormi. Lorsque les animaux ont été amenés la nuit avant le spectacle elle a trouvé tout cela un peu fou et a subi une autre nuit sans sommeil. Kaylyn a montré Clifford et Claire le lendemain et Shellie a trouvé qu’ils ont été merveilleux. Shellie a commenté “Nous avons été très remarqué car les autres animaux étaient tous rouges ou noirs”. Le lendemain, Kaylyn a eu un cours accéléré de tonte et elle a tondu les quatre animaux qui montraient ce jour-là. A ce point, Shellie était trop fatiguée pour avoir peur ou être nerveuse et avait arrêté de trembler jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit rappelée pour la finale avec son taureau Colby. Avec l’aide de leurs amis Brenda et Hunter ainsi que d’autres exposants, Shellie et Kaylyn ont passé à travers la fin de semaine. Elle a commenté: «En regardant en arrière, ça été une très belle fin de semaine, nous avons rencontré beaucoup de nouvelles personnes et ils nous ont donné des bons trucs pour exposer des animaux. Nous n’avons pas remporté des prix mais pour moi, nous avons gagné, on a pas été trainé autour de l’arène, nous n’avons pas été obligé de tordre des queues pour faire marcher nos animaux et surtout nous nous sommes fait connaître”.

NEW BY-LAWS HAVE BEEN APPROVED At the Annual General Meeting held in Trenton, Ontario there were three bylaw amendments passed by the membership in attendance. These changes now have Ministerial approval (Agriculture Canada), and are now in effect, so there are some items you should keep in mind moving forward. Animals born as of January 1, 2017 that have a parent known to carry 1/29 Robertsonian Translocation (129C) will need to be tested for the defect prior to registration. Carriers will still be eligible for registration but will be identified as such. There is only one known carrier animal in the Canadian herdbook that is still alive, but there are several AI sires that are known carriers. Please evaluate your breeding decisions accordingly prior to your 2016 breeding season. The second change is in regards to animals born by embryo transplant. Please be aware the new by-laws stipulate that embryo transplant offspring with carriers in their pedigree will need a 129N status regardless of when the embryos or semen were collected. In any case 129C embryo transplant animals are ineligible for registration. The by-laws are as follows: Section 21.7 d)Embryo Transplant Animals must meet one of these criteria: i) For embryos collected on or after April 1, 1991: A normal status (129N) of both the dam and sire, or embryo transplant animal itself. ii) For embryos collected on or after April 1, 1991 with sires born prior to that date: A normal status (129N) of the dam only, unless the sire is a carrier (129C), or has carriers (129C) in his pedigree and the line of inheritance is unbroken by a 129N animal. iii) For embryos collected prior to April 1, 1991: A normal status (129N) when there are carriers (129C) in the pedigree of the dam or sire, and the line of inheritance is unbroken by a 129N animal. There is a two page list available on the Canadian Blonde website containing 129C animals, and AI sires with an unknown status that have 129C animals in their pedigree. DE NOUVEAUX REGLEMENTS ONT ETE APPROUVES Lors de l’assemblée générale annuelle tenue à Trenton, Ontario il y eu trois amendements aux règlements adoptés par les membres présents. Ces changements ont maintenant l’approbation ministérielle (Agriculture Canada), et sont maintenant en vigueur. Il est recommandable de les prendre en considération pour le futur. Les animaux nés à partir du 1er Janvier, 2017 qui ont un parent reconnu porteur de la translocation Robertsonienne 1/29 (129C) devront être testés pour l’anomalie congénitale avant l’enregistrement. Les porteurs seront toujours admissibles à l’enregistrement mais seront identifiés comme tels. Il y a seulement un animal connu porteur dans le livre généalogique canadienne qui est encore en vie, mais il y a plusieurs taureaux d’IA (Insémination Artificielle) qui sont reconnus des porteurs. En conséquence, il serait préférable de prendre cette information en considération en rapport à vos décisions de sélection avant votre saison de reproduction 2016. Le deuxième changement est en ce qui concerne les animaux nés par d’embryons transplantés. S’il vous plaît être conscient les nouveaux règlements stipulent que la progéniture de transplantation d’embryons avec des porteurs dans leur pedigree auront besoin d’un statut 129N indépendamment du moment où les embryons ou de semence ont été collectés. En tout cas les animaux d’embryons transplantés portant le statut 129C ne sont pas admissibles à l’enregistrement. Il y a une liste de deux pages disponible sur le site Internet de l’Association Canadienne Blonde énumérant les animaux avec le statut 129C ainsi que les taureaux d’IA avec un statut inconnu qui ont des animaux 129C dans leur pedigree. In 2015 Shirley Bilton was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association (CBDA). In 2016 the CBDA will begin crowning a Breeder of the Year in honour of Shirley. Please read the guidelines here:

CBDA BREEDER of the YEAR AWARD

NOMINATIONS NEEDED

The award will be presented annually at the CBDA “National” event Nominations will open on July 1st, and must be received by August 1st each year. Official notification for nominations will be given in the June newsletter. Nominations may be submitted by letter post or email. The award year will run from August 1st to July 31st. Nominator and nominee must be paid CBDA members in good standing for the years in question. Members may not nominate themselves, family members or those that they share memberships/breeding programs with. An individual or an entire farm operation may be nominated. The nominator will be responsible for making the case for the nominee, must present well written thoughts and a list of facts detailing the nominees activities and accomplishments in service of the Blonde breed. Emphasis will be put on the 12 month period in question, however past accomplishments and involvement will not be overlooked. Activities may include, but are not limited to: current year registrations, service on Blonde Boards, service at Trade Shows, participation in CBDA and provincial events, participation and success in the show ring, buying and selling of animals at Association sales, volunteer positions on behalf of the blondes (ie CLRC, fair boards, beef committees, etc), participation in the BIO program, performance testing, new breeders they have introduced to the breed, advertising of their animals in Association and outside publications, contributions to the 4H program. Nominees will be assessed by a non-biased individual with in-direct ties to the breed, knowledge of purebred beef cattle operations and Associations. Nominators/Nominees will remain anonymous, with the exception of the winning nominee. The nominator of the winning nominee may also stay anonymous if they so choose, however the information they provide for the nomination may be used in articles/speeches recognizing the winner. The Breeder of the Year will receive an individual award, a short congratulations in the December newsletter and a full story on their operation in following years “Blonde Connection”.

L’accent sera mis sur la période de 12 mois en question, mais les réalisations et les participations passées ne seront pas ignorées. Les activités peuvent comprendre mais sans s’y limiter à : l’enregistrement d’animaux de l’année courante, la participation sur des conseils d’administration de la Blonde, la participation aux expositions, la participation à des évènements organisés par le CBDA ou l’association provinciale, la participation et le succès dans l’arène, l’achat et la vente d’animaux à des ventes organisées par l’association, être bénévole au nom des Blondes, (par exemple : SCEA, un organisme d’expositions, des comités de bœuf, etc.), la participation au programme BIO, la participation aux épreuves de performance, introduire des nouveaux éleveurs à la race, la publicité de leurs animaux dans les publications de l’association ou autres, leur contribution au programme 4H. Les candidats seront évalués par une personne impartiale avec des liens indirects à la race, la connaissance d’exploitations de bovins de race pure et d’associations. Les proposants et les proposés demeureront anonymes à l’exception du candidat gagnant. À sa demande, la personne proposant le candidat gagnant pourra demeurer anonyme, mais les informations qu’il fournit, pour la nomination, peut être utilisé dans des articles / discours reconnaissant le gagnant. L’Éleveur de l’Année recevra un prix, une courte citation dans le Newsletter du mois de décembre et un article complet sur leur exploitation dans la prochaine publication de la Blonde Connection.

The Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association is building a library of pictures that can be used on the website and in upcoming newsletters. What a great way to expose our Blonde cattle to the world!

by Reed Rigney / par Reed Rigney Stewart Anderson and his wife, AnneMarie, operated Amber Blondes for 20 years on their farm just outside of New Sarepta, Alberta. Stewart was keenly interested in the genetic improvement of the breed. Early on in his breeding program he adopted the “ROP” performance program, and tested the performance of his bulls each year on the farm and at commercial feed lots. Additionally, Stewart contributed articles to Blonde publications on the inheritance of polledness, the significance of 1/29 Robertsonian Translocation in breeding programs and the importance of performance testing in the development of the breed.

Amber Blondes was also one of the first herds in Canada to focus on breeding polled Blondes. Three of the first homozygous polled bulls in the breed were produced through Stewart’s selection: first a 7/8 cross, Amber Yvan 31Y, followed by two purebreds, Amber Zachary 21Z and Amber Axel 11A. Amber Blonde genetics can be found around the world thanks to these sires. Stewart was not only a dedicated cattle breeder; he was a special human being who was kind and loyal; hard-working and honest. He was also a scholar, passionate about science, literature and music. He felt that everything was possible if you put your mind and heart to it and were prepared to work hard. May his journey inspire yours...

A celebration of Stewart’s lif

Celebration of Life

A celebration of Stewart’s life will be held on MAY 1, 2016 from 1-4:00pm at the Golden Pioneer room on the North side of the Agriplex in New Sarepta. There is no set agenda, so people can stay as long or as little as they wish. There will be a PowerPoint presentation and displays that showcase the various stages of Stewart’s life. Some of Stewart’s favorite music will be playing. Refreshments and finger food will be served.

Each month one eligible winning photograph will be selected, and the winner will receive a $25 credit towards their next fullblood or purebred registration. PHOTO CRITERIA • Include a complete shot of animal in photo (including feet, tail and full head if possible). • Limit of five pictures submitted per operation per calendar month. • All photos submitted become the property of the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association and the Association will be able to use them accordingly (photo credit will be provided when possible). • The Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Board reserves the right to not have a winner if it is deemed no picture is eligible in a particular month, and the decision is final. PHOTO TIPS • Don’t cut off the head, feet, butt, nose! Don’t crop your photo -- let your ad designer or webmaster crop the picture to give the best possible design for each individual situation. • When you think you have the picture just right, take two steps back. Give your designer lots to work with. • Remember to identify your photographer or include a brief description of the shot. • You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Make sure you take those pictures at a high enough resolution so your printer doesn’t have any trouble getting them ready for your next brochure or magazine ad. Remember, for a chance to win a $25 registration credit and see your photo in a Blonde publication or on the Blonde website, take your camera the next time you go to check on the fences! 2015 ONTARIO HI POINT AWARDS by Eric Doran / par Eric Doran The sophomore year of the Ontario Blonde Point Shows was another success thanks to a dedicated group of breeders who put in the time and skill to keep our breed in the public eye. The quest for Top Female, Top Male, and Premier Exhibitor began in August with our first point show at Campbellford Fair. It was evident from the start that there were going to be some great contenders for the top honours. The points were calculated using the same system as last year. Exhibitor’s animals were required to show at a minimum of three point shows (the National in Lindsay was mandatory) and to be considered a point show, at least three breeders and 18 Blondes showing were needed. The Ontario Fairs that qualified as point shows this year were Campbellford, Orono, Warkworth, and Lindsay. Markham Fair welcomed Blondes to show this year and the breeders who took advantage of the opportunity said it was a great facility with excellent people to deal with. Unfortunately, with 17 head showing, it didn’t qualify as a point show. Hopefully attendance is up at this fair in the future. Seven of our breeders and their animals met the requirements and in the end it was a Dunham sweep! Franmar Crystal 11C was unstoppable and easily took Top Female. The race for Top Male was tighter, but Donaleen Chachi 1C came out on top. The 2015 Premier Exhibitor was Donaleen Blondes. Congratulations to The Dunham Families for putting together outstanding showstrings! Banners and Trophies sponsored by Fee Haven Farms will be presented to the winners at our AGM.

Programme de Pointage des Expositions Blonde de l’Ontario 2015 La deuxième année du Programme de Pointage dans les expositions de la race Blonde en Ontario a été un succès grâce à un groupe d’éleveurs dévoués qui mettent le temps et les compétences nécessaires pour garder notre race dans l’œil du public. La course à l’honneur pour rapporter le titre de la Première Femelle, Premier Mâle et Premier Exposant a débuté en Août avec notre première exposition à Campbellford. Il était évident dès le début qu’il y allait y avoir quelques grands prétendants pour les grands honneurs. Le pointage a été calculé en utilisant le même système que l’an dernier. Les animaux de l’exposant devaient être présents à un minimum de trois expositions avec le programme de pointage (le National à Lindsay étant obligatoire) et pour être considéré comme une exposition avec pointage il devait avoir au moins trois éleveurs et 18 animaux Blondes exposés. Les Expositions de l’Ontario qui se sont qualifiées en tant qu’exposition avec pointage cette année étaient Campbellford, Orono, Warkworth et Lindsay. L’Expo de Markham souhaitait recevoir les Blondes en exposition cette année et les éleveurs qui ont profité de l’occasion ont tous dit que c’était un bon établissement et d’excellentes personnes à travailler avec. Malheureusement, avec seulement 17 têtes en exposition, il ne s’est pas qualifié comme une exposition avec pointage. Espérons que le nombre de participant sera plus grand à l’avenir. Sept de nos éleveurs et leurs animaux satisfaisaient aux exigences et à la fin il y a eu un balayage Dunham! FranMar Cristal 11C était imparable et a facilement remporté le prix de Première Femelle. La course pour le Premier Mâle était serrée, mais Donaleen Chachi 1C est arrivé en tête. Le titre de Premier Exposant 2015 a été remis à Donaleen Blondes. Félicitations aux familles Dunham pour avoir rassemblé une incroyable équipe de bêtes d’exposition. 2015 Show Incentive Program Programme de Motivation à Participer aux Expositions 2015 The Ontario Blonde Show Incentive Program continued in 2015. Any breeder who exhibited Blondes at an Ontario fair was eligible for a portion of the program’s $2000 payout. It was another successful year in the ring with 13 of our breeders showing a total of 159 Blonde entries at 19 fairs across the province. An impressive selection of quality cattle were on display at each fair and the usual camaraderie and fun that have become a fundamental part of our association were out in full force! Thank you to the following breeders; Bogart Cattle Company, Crystal Farms, Donaleen Blondes, Fee Haven Farms, Franmar Blonde Farm, Halcyon Farms, High Rock Farms, Hilltop Orchard Farm, One OAK Blondes, Over the Top Cattle Company, Ridge View Blondes, Schiestel Blondes, and Stonewall Farms. Blondes were represented at Barrie, Campbellford, Coe Hill, Elmvale, Kincardine, Kinmount, Lindsay, Listowel, Markham, Merrickville, Mildmay, Neustadt, Orono, Paisley, Ripley, Spencerville, Teeswater, Warkworth, and at the Royal. Ontario also headed to Expo Boeuf in Quebec this year. Special thanks to Over the Top Cattle Company, Donaleen Blondes, and Franmar Blonde Farm for representing us with an impressive string and for trucking some hardware back to Ontario as well! Thank you for exhibiting and promoting our breed in 2015 and see you in the show ring in 2016!

N’importe quel éleveur qui présentait des animaux Blondes à une exposition de l’Ontario était admissible à une partie de la distribution du montant de 2 000 $. Ce fut une autre année couronnée de succès dans l’arène avec 13 de nos éleveurs montrant un total de 159 animaux Blondes à 19 expositions à travers la province. Un choix impressionnant de bétail de qualité a été montré à chaque exposition et l’habituelle camaraderie ainsi que le plaisir, qui est devenu une partie fondamentale de notre association, était en pleine force! The 2015 Cream of the Crop Sale was held September 26, 2015 in conjunction with the 41st Canadian National Show and Annual meeting in Lindsay Ontario. The sale was held at the Hoards Station Sale Barn.

Cream of the Crop People’s Choice Awards

The National Sale held in conjunction with the 15th Annual Cream of the Crop Sale at Hoards Station Sale Barn drew another great crowd. Fourteen consignors offered 32 lots of top quality Blonde cattle which brought an average of $3,370. Top selling bull was Pleasant Valley Conan 2C, consigned by Sheldon Asselstine of Pleasant Valley Blondes and purchased by Ron Fintelman of Rosepark Blondes for $6400. Top selling female was Crystal Ashley 4A, consigned by Paul and Mary Ellen Ferguson of Crystal Farms and purchased by Harry Bouwmeester of Jae Acres for $8100. Buyers and bidders spanned the country from British Columbia to New Brunswick and all points in between. Attendees were once again able to vote to choose a winner of the People’s Choice Award. For the second year, John Langstaff took home the banner sponsored by Steven J. Acres for his consignment, Langstaff Bonnie 2C, an 817X daughter. The purchasers, Tyler Sutcliffe and Ashley McNevan of Over the Top Cattle Company, also received a banner sponsored by Little Creek Farms.

2ND ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FROZEN GENETICS SALE by Eric Doran The 2nd Annual Christmas Semen & Embryo Online Auction hosted by Hold Em Auctions was well received. Sales of semen and embryos consigned by Bogart Cattle Company and Dotted K Farms grossed over $2100 on 11 lots sold. Special thanks go to the purchasers; Ryland Cleary, Harry Bouwmeester, Don Dunham, Rheo Machina and Bill Van Bakel. We are looking forward to the 3rd Annual Sale coming near the end of 2016.
