Welcome to our 2017 CU Production Sale!
2017 will go down as being the hottest summer we have known. Gratefully in our little corner we had good spring rains that replenished many of our ponds and reservoirs and kept a certain amount of irrigation going all summer. Our thoughts and prayers are with the firefighters and those in the midst of the difficulties as we look to a reprieve of this hot dry weather. While cattle is the dominant enterprise for our operation, our horse sale becomes the focus of attention for the months of August and September. We feel blessed with the horses we have been able to raise, ride, breed, and sell. The stallion “Quarter Dry “ gave us exactly the kind of horses that we had hoped to raise and introduced us to the Driftwood and Hancock bloodlines. He has been a producer of ranch horses deluxe that make excellent rope horses for the arena as well. Many of our neighbours say the horse they got from us is the best horse on the ranch. As for arena horses, Clint Weston sold his rope horse this year for $35,000 after using him for several years. That Crago bred gelding is a Sun Frost grandson that we started under saddle and sold through a Perlich sale before starting our own sales. Our next stallion purchase was “Dillonwood” that produced some tough medium sized horses. Riley Wilson is roping pro off a Dillonwood that his grandfather “Ted” bought as a weanling a few years ago. Young Kale Daychief has been winning on his Oakwood Drift gelding, a 6 year old that Kale has done a lot of the training on himself. Congrats to both Kale and his sister Makeisha for their successes. The “Little Bears” say their “Oakwood” will outrun anything in the roping arena. PC Bar Dox Frost colts are really shining as they grow into maturity. He is one of the last Sun Frost sons still around and his colts are outstanding. There are more cowboys all the time appreciating the athleticism and speed this sire puts into his colts. CU Roanjo’s first colts are now being ridden and they too are showing tremendous ability and are the “right kind” for us. Ross Hanson and Ashley Parker rode a Roanjo filly for us this spring for a month after she had been lightly started last summer and she came back to us extra nice. After becoming reacquainted with Ross last winter, we will miss him. He was always willing to share his horsemanship with those he came in contact with. Ikes Frosted Barwood, another Driftwood stallion, is an extra quiet horse that gets ridden regularly on our ranch and we look forward to riding his foals as the oldest is just two this year. Blood Bay, 15 hands, 1075 pounds in working shape, Driftwood founded a family of using horses that has persisted for over eight decades. He began his career as a superior match racing horse even beating the mighty Clabber. Later, trained as a tie down roping mount, he developed quite a following amongst the tough ropers down in Arizona where he was competed on. 1941 in Payson, Arizona, his riders collected checks in calf roping, team tying, single steer roping and bulldogging and then he won the horse race down the arena. 1943 - Purchased by Channing and Catherine “Katy” Peake of California for use in their breeding operation. Specializing in rodeo and performance horses, he was an outstanding sire of rope horses and also sired Jernigan Peake, still considered one of the greatest stock horses of all time.
JOE HANCOCK 1923 - 1943
Dark Brown, 15.3 hands, big hip & heavy loin and, like Driftwood, was a top match racing horse. Bred by John Hancock of Perryton, TX, and sold to Tom Burnett of the Four Sixes, many ropers consider Joe Hancock the all-time greatest sire of rope horses. In the 1950’s Shoat Webster & Everett Shaw traded roping championships riding the great Hancock bred rope horses, “Peanuts” & “Popcorn”. The Hancocks, big, stout & tough with lots of bone, were brown, dark bay, or roan with big feet and big heads. They could not be called pretty, but they were good withered, deep cinching, durable horses that could run. The Driftwood x Hancock cross, called a master stroke, combines the best qualities of each line - horses that are athletic, sound, durable, smooth gaited, fast & willing, producing superior ranch & rodeo horses. –1–

on the QUARTER DRY line in our ranch horses. Because he is so closely related to so many of our mares he always has a smaller group of mares to breed – nevertheless his colts are very good! We are riding a three year old filly that is extra nice!! The dam of ROANJO has been an excellent producer for us and produced RANGER, an outstanding ranch and competition horse.
