Welcome
Welcome to the 15th Annual Edie Creek Angus 2-Year Old Bull & Female Sale! What a wild year we’ve come through. I know that we all had some pretty tough challenges in the growing season last year. For us, Grasshoppers were the “icing on the cake” of the worst drought in recent memory. Add that to worldwide pandemic which is hopefully on its way out, but it brings to mind a verse from the Bible that has caught my attention repeatedly in the last couple years: “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:13-14. Makes me scratch my head a little bit…
Drought conditions forced us to sell a group of 50+ yearlings that would otherwise have been Grass Finished beefs because the grasshoppers had devoured that pasture. We are very thankful though that we were able to preserve the core of the cowherd by shifting our cow-feeding strategy from our longtime grain-free protocol to a ration of straw, grain, and corn silage. Being surrounded by grain farmers, we were able to convince enough of them to drop straw for us that we made enough straw bales. We had also planted corn this year because our perennial pastures and hayfields were suffering badly due to the extended drought, and are producing less than 20% of what they do in the good years. That corn was intended to be grazed before it filled grain kernels (to stay within our Grass Fed protocols), but with the severity of the drought and the need for a straw & grain diet obvious at that point anyways, we opted to let the corn mature fully til kernels filled, and we chopped a 40 acre field which yielded just over 8T/ac, and grazed the 55 acre field next to the winter waterer, and it yielded less than 3T/ac. Allotting them ½ a day’s feed using electric fence, plus feeding grass straw for the remaining ½ day’s feed every day allowed us to get good utilization and stretch the feed resources we had. We were sure grateful to get a couple of inches of rain in mid-August, it literally added Tons to the corn crop! Many beef producers were forced to sell breeding stock early, which from a pasture management perspective (and considering the scarcity of winter feed) was necessary, but with tough market conditions and the uncertainty of having to get rid of genetics developed and adapted over time in your environment, was a very painful experience.
JONATHAN & FAMILY
Drought conditions also influenced cattle markets with unseasonal cow runs and soaring feed costs due to the shortages (The point is), having an efficient, moderate maternally-oriented cowherd is an important basis for profitable beef production in the prairies, and can be bred to any combination of maternal and terminal sires to produce the kind of market calves desired… We were very pleased with how well the DV Auction video-based sale went last year. Remote buyers and on-site buyers alike watched the videos of the bulls selling instead of having bulls go through the sale ring. Almost half of the bulls sold via DV Auction, some to other provinces and the U.S.A., but many to local producers who were calving or respectfully chose to stay home in light of Health & Safety guidelines. We will be doing the same thing again this year, and would gladly help you get familiar with the easy-to-use DV Auction online platform. Their platform is by far the best online buying experience I’ve seen, all the info you need is in one place!

Great One 77F is an exciting bull for us. An aggressive breeder, he covered 50 2-4yr old cows this past summer with only 3% of them being open—during the worst drought we have ever experienced. His dam was Stefan’s favourite Howrey Angus female, but sadly was found over-centre the winter after raising 77F. 77F is structurally sound, has thrived in our environment, and has the maternal lineage to accomplish our breeding goals. 77F has great slope from hooks to pins, excellent neck extension and hard, tidy feet.

Much has been said about 34F’s dam 606S. To recap here: she’s one of the best footed & uddered cows, and also the most fertile to walk our pastures. As a natural son of 606S, 34F had high expectations, and as the picture shows, he exceeded them. Sire Full Bore 730 was a cow-producing mainstay at Neiman Cattle Co in Wyoming, and we were fortunate to have him walk our pastures at the end of his career.

We can’t introduce 848C without telling the story of his now 19yr old Dam, 693N, the top Headliner daughter raised at OCC, from whom Ohldes used numerous sons and daughters. 693N epitomizes maternal efficiency in a structurally sound package: her Dam was 19 and Granddam was 21. Going forward, we intend for every Edie Creek Angus pedigree to contain 693N at least once, she is that good. 848C has been a stellar breeder, stamps functional forage-efficient cattle with classic Angus heads, and is carrying forward the OCC strain at Edie Creek Angus. Now owned by Vee Tee Angus.

Sire OCC Red Grazer 610Z is known for creating excellent females, as attested by current owner Rick Calvo: “We have a lot of daughters in production out of Grazer, and they are as perfect as they come. Moderate framed females with a lot of rib shape. They are feminine made with absolutely perfect udders. If you’re looking for the type of bulls that are going to perform on grass and sire efficient females that wean off a big calf every year, these 610Z sons are the ones you need to look at.” - Rick Calvo

MH Titan 752 will increase fertilely and longevity in any pedigree he is in. He bred 40+ cows as a 11yr old bull, and had a smaller breeding group as a 12 and 13yr old. His breeder, Monte Howrey, said “Titan: the older he gets, the more I appreciate him. Just no holes in him: feet are great, Athletic, incredible disposition. Fertile and highly intelligent...he’s probably the most USEFUL bull I have ever bred.” Titan comes from the same cow family as DDA Emblazon 27C. We don’t think you’ll find better feet on a mature bull than Titan’s, they are impeccable. Titan also tested “TT” for Leptin in the Quantum DNA test, for those of you who track that.

We bought Squirt out of the Sinclair program in Wyoming to cross back on some of our OCC bred cows. He brings a linebred Emulation pedigree, terrific calving ease, yet maintains good growth. He has averaged 74lbs on his Bull calves and 65 on his heifers. Granddam 2V11 is an OCC Great Plains daughter, which brings in the greatness & reliability of the 1019 cow that anchors the OCC program.

We purchased NCC 629 to replace his sire Full Bore. He is the result of a father daughter mating, tightening the predictability of his offspring. He is a taller bull, whose daughters will likely make 1350-1400 lb cows. Ryan Neiman, Neiman Cattle Co. formerly owned Full Bore 730: “His sons are masculine, wide based massive cattle with added length and muscle. The bulls cover cows with lots of libido and athleticism while maintaining good flesh. More impressively his daughters are extremely productive calf raising machines with good udders, maternal instinct and fertility”

OCC Easy Red 868A is a one of a kind bull in Canada. We have found that Easy Red does phenotypically what we are trying to do with our Black Angus program in a linebred, genetically prepotent RED package! Easy Red will fix what the Red Angus breed needs fixing: foot quality, natural muscling ability & ease of fleshing on forage alone. He traces 9x to Dixie Erica 1019, the foundation cow of the black program at OCC and 5x to PCC Colorado Hobo. Also Leptin Genotype tested as “TT”. There are no sons in this year’s sale, but about half the red bulls in this sale are out of Easy Red daughters, he will play a large role in our Red Angus herd for years to come. OCC Easy Red 868A is now deceased.

EDIE CREEK ANGUS 15TH ANNUAL BULL & FEMALE SALE - MARCH 12 . 2022
We have come to believe that creating a maternally efficient cowherd is the foundation of beef production. Matching your cowherd to the resources in your environment is another key step to reducing your inputs/costs. Edie Creek Angus bulls can help you with both of those, creating more profit within your cow herd.
Why use an Edie Creek Angus 2-Year Old Bull?
We are 20 years into the journey of genetic progress and have learned many lessons along the way. There is no such thing as a “free lunch”: not in physics, economics, or in the production of beef cattle. The math is simple. The more time and money you invest into your cattle the more you must get out of them. Solar Energy and Hybrid Vigour are the closest things we have to a “free lunch”, so we need to maximize their cumulative benefits with cow herds that efficiently turn low quality forages (grass) into high quality protein (beef). Winter or summer, our cows have taken care of their own daily needs for over a decade on a zero-starch, forage-only program. They are fertile, moderate and have excellent udders. They calve on pasture and take care of their own calves. To build on a foundation of longevity, we have predominantly used Herdsires that have dams and grandams that have consistently produced calves well into their teens. The oldest dam currently would be 19-yr old OCC Dixie Erica 693N, and her dam was productive until she was 19yrs old. Reproduction is the most important factor affecting profitability. We have tightened the screws on reproductive longevity by shortening our breeding season and using multi-sire breeding groups. Heifers are exposed to bulls for 42 days, and the cows see bulls for 50 days. The two main cow herds have Angus bulls for the first 30 days, and a Fleckvieh bull for the last cycle—thus ensuring only the most fertile females produce offspring that we select purebred parent stock from. Multi-sire breeding groups ensure that the most fertile bulls get the job done — another step in improving overall fertility. After all, reproduction is 5x more important than growth rate, and 10x more important than carcass quality when it comes to profit. Our gene pool stems from proven descendants of renowned maternal bloodlines such as Traveler, Emulation, Quantum, Shoshone & Wye that have thrived in low-input environments across the continent. We stack cows and cow families in our pedigrees that have raised calves every year into their teens. This enables us to offer a more consistent pen of bulls every year: prepotently bred bulls which stamp a consistent pen of calves, including daughters that can be counted on to become reliable mama cows.
Someone once said that if all the knowledge about cattle was represented by a clock, our current knowledge would cover the span between 1 & 2 o’clock. Cattle have vast complexities & wide-ranging genetic expressions in differing environments. Pursuing profitable, ranch-adapted cattle is a long term process. The more we learn, the more questions we have! With the complexities of maternal traits and longevity, we lean on animals that have performed in the environment we ask them to, to show us who to select as breeding stock. This method of selection has taught us a lot over the years. We don’t claim that our cattle are perfect… But we have figured out that performance and carcass (EPD’s) will not guide the selection of a functional cow in real-world conditions, and are in fact antagonistic traits to longevity and functionality in the range cow herd. All that we’ve learned has gone towards ensuring that faults are as minimal as possible, and that the cattle we are replicating are balanced & functional. Anyone selling you “perfect” breeding stock with the best carcass & growth and still claim to have perfect mama cows, has yet to find out all the faults in their cattle..! Our bulls are bred with generations of fleshing ability, fertility, capacity, correct feet, longevity and udder quality. Our bulls will sire calves that are born easily and nurse quickly. They will establish an efficient, maternal “Cowherd Factory” for you which can then be mated with terminal sires to add hybrid vigour, performance, and the "flavour of the day" in hide colour. Doing this will create a functional, long-living cowherd able to wean calves with maximum efficiency in your commercial ranch environment. When you buy 2-year-old bulls from Edie Creek Angus, you get a carefully developed breeding bull, not overfed & slaughter-ready, like many bulls you could buy. You can turn these Rugged 2-yr olds out and expect them to breed more cows than yearlings and come back in better shape. They are more durable and last under real-world breeding conditions. Longevity is important in your Herd Bulls, just as it is in your cowherd! By developing them for an additional year it allows us to sort them in our pastures instead of yours. Increasing the profitability of commercial cattle producers is the focus of our breeding program. We really enjoy talking about beef production, so please give us a call or stop by for a tour and we can talk about our breeding program or any of the cattle for sale. — Stefan Bouw

Cow bull. A unique sale feature, this bull will sire calves that thrive in a forage based environment, where profit from low input management is required. We bought the 693N cow from Tim Ohlde in Kansas as a 12yr old cow. She is still alive today, but has probably raised her last calf. This guy’s dam, 2F, is sired by Titan, so that locks in near-perfect feet & udders. OCC Moonshine sons are next to impossible to come by. Moonshine daughters have done very well for us. With the oldest daughter we had being a 16yr old cow that raised 20 calves. She went to town this past year, because she was worn out, not because she was open.

Heifer bull. DNA test pending for sire confirmation. This bull is exactly what our breeding program is about. The Frances cow family originates from the herd of Larry Leonhardt - Shoshone Angus. Cow bull. Full brother sold to Kody Aesoph in South Dakota last year. Take a look at the pedigree on this bull. He’s triple bred to Melisa 545 and double bred to Dixie Erica 1019. Both are cows that anchored breeding programs on their own merits, and raised calves well into their teens. If you want to know what his daughters will look like, take a look at the picture of 545.

Heifer bull. ECA 12H can be registered only in the American Angus Herdbook. He bred heifers for us as a yearling. His dam is one of Jonathan’s favorite cows, having as close to an ideal phenotype as they come, with that perfect wedge shape. She also has a perfect udder, calves early every year, & raised a fancy Pinebank 41/97 heifer calf last summer. 633 is an ideal cow to work with, she is attentive and respectful when we are tagging and weighing her calf.

Heifer bull. This is probably the best Red Grazer 8E son in the sale. He is very complete, and out of a cow that has nothing left to prove. 6503S is the longest living Red Angus cow we have ever had, and is the back bone to our Red Angus Herd. 6503S has a son working for Cody McDaniel, a Pharo Cattle Co cooperative producer in Montana. 47H can bring some longevity traits to the Red Angus breed. It has been very difficult to find useful Red Angus genetics that work for in our low-input management system. 6503S has raised 16 calves.

Cow bull. Dam is an OCC Hunter daughter out of the extremely fertile 606S cow. This cow is probably as good a cow as we have. The sire, 848C is out of a cow that raised her last calf for us as a 17 year old cow. Almost all our Herd bulls come out of cows that have raised calves into their teens. 21E has calved 1st cycle every year to date and is one of Jonathan’s favourite cows. This bull would do an excellent job of moderating a cow herd, and adding fleshing ability & fertility.

Heifer bull. When we are sorting our replacement heifers, they are almost all born 1st cycle, and the longevity of the cow family behind them is a heavy selection factor. We aren’t smart enough to know which heifers will turn out. We lean on cow families that have been sorted out by nature. If a breeder keeps his cows fat all year round, how does he know which ones can make it where cows need to work for a living? ECA 72D has calved 1st cycle every year, with WW ratio of 105 on 4 calves.

Cow bull. Half brother in blood to the powerhouse Lot 4 bull. This bull is the most moderate framed of the Big Time sons, which makes him one of the best options for Grass-Finishing sires. He’s got extra rib capacity and fleshing ability bred in, and will also carry forward great fertility, as his dam has calved 1st cycle every year (x4) and there’s plenty of fertility on the maternal end of the Big Time bull. Daughters will have sweet udders.

Cow bull. Lot 39 is bred to make feminine, fertile cows. His beautiful young dam has calved 1st cycle every year. To apply pressure & improve Fertility, we breed our heifers as yearlings for 42 days, and we ask them to re-breed without ever being fed grain. Fertility in your cow herd will only improve if you put pressure on the heifers. The same goes for our herd. If you prop your heifers up by either feeding them a hi-energy diet, or giving them a long breeding window, too many will fall out when things get tough.

DID YOU KNOW? • Reproduction is the most important factor affecting profitability • Reproduction is 5X more important than growth rate, and 1OX more important than carcass quality when it comes to profit. • Body Condition has the greatest impact on reproduction. ("Edie Creek bulls will sire Easier Fleshing Cows that can hold Body Condition.”) • Thin cows are only half as productive as those in optimum condition • Every missed breeding cycle represents a 42 lb loss in weaning weight. Cow bull. We don’t feed our bulls to look as impressive as possible as a 2yr old bull. We feel that would shorten their working career. This also allows them to express their natural fleshing and muscle. Too many Purebred bulls are developed on near-finishing rations - where short term gratification and profit outweighs long term value for their new owners.

DUE TO START CALVING APRIL 28, 2022 All the straight black & red heifers are Purebreds (selling without registration papers). Only the first 3 Black Angus heifers that sell individually, come with registration papers. These heifers were raised without any grain, corn silage or pellets as calves. They were exposed to a bull on pasture for 45 days. Because of the extended drought we have been forced this winter to forego our forage-only feeding protocol. This winter they have been with the cow herd and were fed a ration of Corn silage with barley (10lbs DM/day) and rotated between bale grazing oat straw, and some silage bales for protein for the balance of their ration. The heifers were bred in the same pasture as our own replacement heifers, in a multi-sire breeding group that consisted entirely of Calving Ease Edie Creek Angus Bulls. Two of these service sires sell in the sale today, as lots 22 & 41. Our long term goal is to supply our customers with Purebred and F1 females that can be used to create a profitable cowherd factory which you can then cross with terminal sires to capture the cumulative benefits of hybrid vigour and the “flavour of the day” in hide colour. Doing this will create a functional, long-living cowherd that will wean calves at optimum efficiency in your commercial ranch environment. The Opportunity is yours! 28

FOUNDATION GENETICS AT EDIE C
OCC LEGACY 839L
OCC Legacy 839L was truly the foundation of the Edie Creek Program. He was owned by Crowfoot Cattle Co, Hillfire Angus, and B.B.A.R., they bought him and collected semen on him. Legacy was a masculine, hormonally balanced, athletic breeding machine that duplicates his own type in his sons., and leaves broody, deep, easy fleshing cows. We were fortunate to walk several sons in our pastures, as well as use him in our A.I. program. Sire Echelon is a son of the great Dixie Erica of CH 1019 cow, the OCC matron of Emblazon, Focus, Great Plains and many foundational OCC sires. Havlng lived until age 21, she set the bar for longevity, productivity, and had one of the most refined udder structures of any Angus cow. You will also find the Dixie Erica of CH 1019 cow in our Red Angus cattle. The pedigree of our OCC Easy Red 868A bull has 1019 in it 9 times. We plan on turning back to OCC Legacy in the near future for our herd.

FOUNDATION GENETICS AT EDIE C OCC GREAT PLAINS 943G & OCC DIXIE ERICA 907C
OCC Great Plains and OCC Dixie Erica 907C can be found in almost all the pedigrees of our cow herd. In the words of Tim Ohlde, “Great Plains excels his sire (N Bar Emulation EXT) in every EPD”, from carcass merit to growth, and his daughters are structurally correct, highly fertile cows with great mothering instincts. Many breeders who focused on maternal quality used Emulation back on Traveler bred cattle with great success. Our goal was to maintain maternal aspects & longevity, which is why we pursued the Great Plains line - keeping with the Dixie Erica 1019 cow (dam of many great OCC bulls) which we could trust. MH Titan & ECA Great One 79Y were both excellent sons of OCC Great Plains. Donor Dam 693N is a great example of longevity, fertility & structural correctness. She is now 18, her dam 907C was 19 and great grand dam 1019 made it to 21!

BULL DEVELOPMENT These bulls have been raised on their mothers’ milk and grass. They were weaned in late November, then brought in and fed 4 lbs of barley and a rotation of free choice grass straw or 1st cut hay.. In May they were turned out to pasture, with no supplements, where they grew well until the end of October. With the drought causing feed supplies to be tight here this winter, the bulls started getting some bales in November of 2021. We feed our bulls with the firm goal of developing them into hard muscled bulls, not chubby, soft, dough boys! Starting in December 2021, they received 5lbs of Barley and a mix of Grass Seed Screenings/ Sunflower Screenings and 4lbs (DM) of corn silage. Their hay rings had Alfalfa silage bales. They have not been pushed with hard feed so that they will breed longer for you. Bull Program Bulls can be kept at Edie Creek Angus for $2/day until May 1st. After that, the cost will be $3/day. Free delivery available in Manitoba. If you haul your bull on Sale day we will give you a $50 discount on each bull. TERMS AND CONDITIONS The terms of sale are by cash or cheque. Settlement to be made immediately after the completion of the sale. The right of property will not pass until after settlement is made. Bulls will not be released until settlement is made. BIDS Every animal entering the sale ring will be sold to the highest bidder and may be subject to a minimum/reserve bid. DISPUTES In case of disputes, bidding will be re-opened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes is final. ANNOUNCEMENTS AND CHANGES All announcements and changes made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in this catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to any such announcements. PURCHASER'S RISK Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as the auctioneer’s hammer falls for the final time. LIABILITIES All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk and sellers assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents occurring in or about the premises. GUARANTEE The Bulls have been evaluated for breeding soundness and semen quality by Beausejour Animal Hospital. We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull at the point of sale. Should your bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder in his first breeding season, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. We will not provide the replacement or credit for a bull that is physically injured or mismanaged. It is the responsibility of the buyer to insure their bulls if desired.

BULL RATINGS EXPLAINED CALVING EASE Based on the bull's birthweight, his parents' birthweight, and his own EPD's. Also based on the assumption that the bull will be breeding small-framed Angus/British cattle--if the bull will be breeding larger-framed Continental cattle, a three-star (***) bull should work on heifers without any trouble. These are simply guidelines to help your decision making. You are ultimately responsible for the matings of your own cattle. CALVING EASE RATING Suitable

UDDER RATING Based on the quality of the dam's udder structure and teat shape and size. Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be an average, functional udder, while a score of "5" would be a perfectly level udder with small, shapely teats. FLESHING RATING Designed to predict the ability of the bull's offspring to thrive in a forage-only environment. The forage rating is also a suitable indicator of the bull's own ability to stay in good flesh on a low-energy ration ("easy-keeping-ness"). Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be moderately easy fleshing, while a score of "5" would be very easy fleshing and his offspring would finish on forages alone. Born 1st Cycle? This indicates if a bull was born in the first 21 days of the calving season. This includes bulls that were born early from short gestation. All Angus bulls on offer were born in the first 30 days of our calving season. AOD: Age of Dam. Actual age of the bull’s dam when she raised him. AOMGD: Age of Maternal Grand Dam. To give you a better understanding of the actual longevity of the cowfamily behind each bull. TRUCKING For our Canadian Customers outside of Manitoba we will assist in covering the trucking bill. You pay the first $200/ bull, and we will cover the rest. Delivery in Manitoba is free. INSURANCE The animal becomes the responsibility of the purchaser as soon as it is sold.
