#TheRoundUp
The 2022-2023 Student Managed Farm Purebred Unit powered by New Holland, would like to welcome everyone to the 2023 Round Up sale on March 25th. The Round Up has grown to become the showcase for all of the beef and equine animal science students, as its an opportunity to market and exhibit top quality cattle and horses to the industry. There’s been a lot of excitement about this year’s sale from all members of the Purebred Unit, and we can’t wait to see you there!
The bull and heifer pens are full of depth and quality, and every animal offers aspects that can benefit any commercial or purebred herd. In terms of genetics that have been selected and used, we think the animals offer an opportunity to get your hands on some industry leading Angus genetics. The cattle have been on a very stable and effective ration that has left the cattle with an ideal amount of cover, while keeping them fresh and athletic. If you’re in the market for a heifer or power bull, there’s one in this offering for everyone.
If you’re interested in high-quality Angus genetics and are in the area, do not hesitate to call and arrange a time to tour the sale cattle. We’ll be more than willing to show you the cattle and their dams to allow your selection process to be more in-depth. Everyone is welcome anytime!

A sale feature here! This Renovation daughter has been a standout all year and we feel she has a ton of potential. 6K is an easy doing, sound structured female that combines a bold sweeping rib, muscle, and attractiveness in a neat genetic package. Besides this heifer’s elite phenotype, the best part about her is the cow family that stands behind her. Her mother, 42D was successfully campaigned this year as a 6-year-old cow and was named reserve senior champion female at Agribition. 42D is a powerful cow with a near perfect udder. Furthermore, 6K’s grandam is the massive 4Z cow that has been a big part of our ET program in the last few years. The combination of pedigree and performance makes this female unique. Bid with confidence!

Equine
The Equine Student Managed Farm, Powered by New Holland Agriculture is excited to have eight 3 and 4-year-old AQHA Geldings on offer for this year’s 2023 Round Up Sale! The colt starting team has been putting in the hard work training these geldings to make versatile riding horses since the beginning of the academic year in September. The geldings have been exposed to obstacles and ropes since the start of their training, creating long-lasting confidence to carry through to their new homes. This includes crossing bridges and tarps, dragging logs, and opening gates. The geldings have tracked the Heel-OMatic and will be working on pen roping live cattle come sale day. Our team has described these geldings as accurately as possible, as their training level and Suitability vary. We wish to see our horses succeed in their new homes. Our goal is to produce, select and train quality Quarter Horses with excellent dispositions and conformation in an economically sustainable format. We are excited to showcase our team’s hard work that has been put into the geldings at the Lakeland College Round Up Sale and make new connections with all the great people in the Equine and Beef industry.

CommercialBeef Selling
The 2022-2023 Commercial Beef SMF Unit powered by New Holland is extremely excited to welcome and invite you to this year’s annual RoundUp sale. We have a very impressive selection of open Angus/Simmental cross-replacement heifers on offer at this year’s sale. These heifers were born between January and March 2022 and have been selected for their astonishing qualities that include and are not limited to structural soundness and exceptional growth performance. These heifers are exceptionally smooth muscled, track beautifully, are very powerfullooking animals, and are sure to make great additions to anyone’s herd producing quality calves for years to come. Our unit takes great pride in raising these quality healthy animals on a herd health program that includes Bovi Shield Gold One Shot, Ultrabac 7 with Somubac, and Ivermectin. Additionally, these heifers will be palpated prior to sale day to ensure that they are reproductively sound. Please feel free to view these heifers on our Facebook page or contact one of our team members to set up a private viewing before the sale. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
The Lakeland Commercial Unit Powered By New HollandBison
The Lakeland College Bison SMF is the college’s newest and most exciting addition to the Student Managed Farm program. In the Bison SMF, students are responsible for running a bison cow-calf operation, with approximately 200 head of bison for them to work with. Some duties include weaning calves from cows, diagnosing and treating sickly animals, coming up with a grazing plan, selling and buying animals and more! The group also takes field trips to conventions and other bison operations to meet and learn from professional industry members to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the bison industry. Thanks to an incredibly generous donation from Rita and Armin Meuller at Rangeland Bison, students can get up close and personal with North America’s largest land animal while also learning how to run a successful bison operation. Bison operations can be quite similar to beef operations and yet can also differ greatly. The most notable difference is that bison are much lower maintenance than cattle. Bison are incredibly tenacious and require no assistance calving. They can get through the sheer cold of Canadian winters easily thanks to their fluffy coat and their superpower of seasonality dropping their energy intake requirements. Bison are also resilient to a variety of diseases, though they are not immune. The bison market is also a quickly growing market, as bison is having an ever-growing presence in the livestock markets. If you are interested in the industry or just curious about North America’s largest land animal, any member of the Lakeland College Bison SMF would be more than happy to talk to you.
ExtensiveGrazing
The Extensive Grazing Research Student Managed Farm Unit powered by New Holland, focuses on sustainably raising our commercial Hereford Angus herd through extensive management practices. Although we try to remain extensive and low maintenance in our management and keep handling to a minimum, we are still focused on building a strong, maternal herd which contains an in-depth databank of herd performance and breed composition. We aim to implement a 365-day grazing plan which allows the cows to graze pastureland and crop stubble as well as bale grazing throughout the year. This fall after bringing the herd home from summer pasture they were grazing on crop stubble and were supplemented with shredded bales. In the second semester we began bale grazing. Our replacement heifers were put through a Residual Feed Intake (RFI) Trial to gather feed efficiency information and to build the herds data bank. For bale grazing this year we took a more extensive approach than what has traditionally been done and what the units have done in the past. This winter we set out bales to last the cows a week before having to refill. We set out 25 bales, 19 hay bales and 6 greenfeed, once most of the bales are eaten and the cows clean up the majority of the forage,
they then move to another feeding site. Our replacement heifers are also put onto a RFI trial to determine each heifer’s feed efficiency by gathering their precise feed intake and average daily gain. By collecting this data, we can make our herd more efficient and overall more economical by building a database that we can reference when selecting replacement heifers in the future. RFI is a trait that is predicted to be heritable so by collecting this data on our heifers we are able to monitor the heritability throughout our herd. In addition to our own herd, we work closely with the Lakeland College Research Department on campus. Assisting with their research trials such as the Swath Grazing trial that concluded in January of this year, helping and involving ourselves with the weighing and moving of the steers within the trail and doing health checks on the animals before they went into the trial in November. Our heifer selection process also includes the research department as our replacement heifers are involved with the RFI Trial that takes place in February. We all meet and select not only based upon physical phenotype but also the dam’s performance records and subsequent weaning weights.
After the RFI Trial we take our top performers based off the information collected and use it for our final selection for replacements entering our herd.
GREAT APPRECIATION to these donors and sponsors LAZYMC Angus
The bull feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization and gut health; they are developed on grass with their moms on a strict mineral program. All the forages are sampled and analyzed to ensure quality forages are used. Once the calves are weaned, they are slowly moved onto a balanced TMR.
The bulls are challenged with a forage-based TMR to help them develop and express their genetic potential. Matching suitable protein sources with proper starch is key to promoting lean muscle growth. Organic minerals are used to ensure proper immune function and overall health. If you have any questions about the nutrition program, please feel free to reach out. Buy with confidence knowing the bulls have been developed on a balanced nutrition program. Best of luck on sale day!
