Did You Know? In 2012… ‰ Canada exported $1.2 billion of beef, down from $2.2 billion in 2001. Canada’s top markets were the United States ($870 million), Mexico ($111 million), Hong Kong ($78 million) and Japan ($75 million). Alberta exported $852 million of beef to the USA and international markets. ‰ Canada imported $1.2 billion of beef with the top suppliers being the United States ($993 million), New Zealand ($89 million) and Uruguay ($46 million). ‰ The average Canadian consumed 18.1 kg of chicken, 16.1 kg of pork and 18.3 kg of beef. In the past 20 years, chicken consumption in Canada has increased 33%, pork consumption has declined 22% and beef consumption has declined 15% (Source: Statistics Canada, 2013). ‰ Alberta’s retailers sold $291 million of fresh beef, $125 million of fresh pork, $211 million of fresh chicken, $93 million of deli meats and $255 million of packaged meats. ‰ The world’s largest beef importers were Russia (1.07 billion tonnes), United States (1.0 billion tonnes) and Japan (737 million tonnes). ‰ The world’s largest beef exporters were Brazil (1.5 billion tonnes), India (1.4 billion tonnes) and Australia (1.4 billion tonnes). ‰ In a survey of Canadian consumers (Consumer Retail Meat Study, 2012), when asked if they were willing to pay a 20% premium: • 29% of Canadians stated they would pay a 20% premium for hormone/antibiotic free beef • 28% would for certified humane • 22% for environmentally sustainable • 21% for grain fed claims • 19% for grass fed • 17% for organic ‰ Global tariff rates on Canadian beef: Japan 38.5%, South Korea 40%, EU 0% with the recently signed Canada-EU Trade Agreement.
