Coys Rostrum - A Year In Review 2018
As the100th Anniversary Approaches - Coys Hall of Fame
W.E Coy Automotive Engineers Queens Gate Mews London SW 1922 Welcome to our review of 2018. As we move into our centenary year, it is noted that despite 2018 being a year of internationally accepted transition, both politically and economically, the classic and historic car market across the globe demonstrated the same resilience as it had in previous transitionary periods over the last 20 years, which led very much to its establishement as a globally recognised and significant collectible marketplace. A result of this resilience showed an unabated apetite for historic motor car events, services, television programmes and historic races, rallies and tours around the world. As we are now entering our 100th year of involvement in motor cars, we hope you would like to reflect back with us as you read this review on what an interesting and adventurous year 2018 was.
Rostrum 2018
Coys at Autosport
2018 was our last year in residence as the auction partner at the Autosport show, and it was with a heavy heart that we moved on as the show, under new ownership and with a new direction, began to focus more intently upon the new motor car and motor sport environment. We will still miss our January adventures in Birmingham, which had been established for some 20 years. Feature sales at the final Autosport auction included an F40 LM Specification Michelotti car, alongside a stunning right-hand drive Ferrari 365 Berlinetta Boxer, as well as a 1968 Aston Martin DB6 Volante.
Coys at Autosport
Autosport International
Autosport International had always been the post-Christmas Mecca for motorsport enthusiasts, and from a Coys perspective, those focused and enthused by historic motorsport and historic motorsport activities. With new ownership and new directions, 2018 was our final year as a principal exhibitor at the show, but it will no doubt continue to be a focal point for a new breed of motorsports fan of all ages, those keen and excited by the modern motorsport world with its bias towards alternative fuels and hybrid technologies, and an exciting destination for the modern motor car fan.

London Classic Car Show Auction
Our second auction at the London Classic Car Show in 2018 was, as to be expected, fabulously well-attended, with a broad selection of motorsport and classic sports and touring cars, including celebrity auctioneering activities from none other than Coys old friend Philip Glenister. Feature sales included a number of rare and interesting right-hand drive cars, including a number of post-war classics which found favour with the affluent London crowd, including the last right-hand drive Ferrari Boxer ever built, an immaculately restored Mercedes-Benz 190SL from celebrity ownership, right through to a ubiqutous Land Rover Series 1.

London Classic Car Show
The London Classic Car Show is the must-attend event for any discerning classic car owner, collector, expert or enthusiast. Bringing together an international celebration of the very best dealers, manufacturers, car clubs and products it’s the perfect day out for all. Set in London’s premier events venue, one of the show’s unique and most crowd pleasing features is an indoor driving runway where classic cars are fired up and driven. This is the only place to see, hear and smell these beautiful iconic classics in action, all under one roof.

Coys at the London Motorcycle Show
Our activities in the classic motorcycle market continued at a pace in 2018, with our return to the Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle Show. This is the only classic motorcycle auction held in the capital. One of the absolute features which gained media headlines around the world was the sale of a Triumph Bonneville Bud Ekins Desert Scrambler Special, formerly the property of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Fans of custom machines were treated to a spectacular display in the Custom Cafe Racer Zone styled by Spada as some of Europe’s leading builders brought their creations to the capital.

Spring Classics
Our Spring Classics auction in March, held at our traditional central London venue, the Royal Horticultural Halls in Westminster, and already our third auction of the year, set a good tone for the year ahead, with noticeable sales such as a single-owner collection of three important Rolls-Royces.

Coys at Techno Classica
Always one of the most important and well-attended auctions of the Coys year, our Techno Classica sale boasted a fantastic catalogue of over 130 important lots, highlights of which included a 1971 Ferrari 246 GT Dino with only 45,000 km on the odometer, a 1967 Lamborghini Miura to SV Specfication, a Bugatti Type 44 FIACRE delivered new to Paris in 1930, a 1988 Porsche 959 Comfort, and a 1957 AC Ace Bristol Competition Roadster which competed in the Nurburgring 1000 Kilometers in 1959.

Techno Classica, Essen
Long considered the greatest show in Europe for its breadth and depth of quality content and significant manufacturer’s involvement, the Essen show, even after so many years at the top of its game, continues to grow and develop, and as any visitor will now tell you, one day at the show is not enough to see everything.

Legende et Passion, Monaco
The Coys Legende et Passion auction at Monaco is the original sale of this name to be held in the principality, and indeed the longest running historic motor car auction under one name to feature in Monaco. Our sale in 2018 included a wonderful and inspiring speech by Dr. Lamborghini himself prior to successfuly auctioning a number of cars from the Lamborghini Collection.

The Monaco Historic Grand Prix
Marked by a record attendance (Approximately 40,000 spectators in 3 days) and by an extraordinary line-up of racing cars, but also thanks to the successful new Parade F1 Heritage of which the Champions John Watson, Jacky Ickx and Thierry Boutsen welcomed the initiative, it can be said that the 11th edition of the “Grand Prix de Monaco Historique was a success.

Chiswick House
Coys returned in 2018 to one of our traditional London venues, Chiswick House, one of Britain’s finest Palladian villas. A Coys venue that has been established since our auctions held there in the early 1990s, the house and gardens have undergone a fantastic restoration and is now one of the finest classic car auction venues in Britain, let alone in London. Feature entries included a barn find Aston Martin Vantage which caused a bidding frenzy, with 16 telephone bidders plus uncounted in the room, along with an Alfa Romeo TZ2 and a stunning and supremely elegant Rolls-Royce 20/25 with coachwork by J Gurney Nutting & Co.

The HRDC is one of the most sought-after, successful and social historic racing clubs in all of historic motorsport. Organised and run by motorsport empresario Julius Thurgood, who is equally famed for his connections with the Festival of Speed and Revival events at Goodwood, the HRDC is a happy, comfortable and competitive home for historic motorsport. Coys have a long associaton with the HRDC, and the Coys Trophy for pre-1966 touring cars is a particular highlight.

Now established as one of the most significant auctions held in Europe, Blenheim Palace enjoyed remarkable results, not only in sale rate but in prices achieved as well, and Coys guests at the event enjoyed a beautiful warm day in the sunshine, with the cars all selling easily. Blenheim Palace Concours
An annual event in association with the Coys Blenheim Palace auction is the Concours d’Elgance, held in the gardens of Blenheim Palace. This invitation only event is now regularly over-subscribed by clients, colleagues and friends alike, and is set to continue in its role as one of the more exclusive private Concours d’Elegances in the UK.

The Cavalino Hoard
As part of the Blenheim Palace event in 2018, we handled the sale of the remarkable Cavalino Hoard, which made headlines around the globe - a fascinating collection of Ferrari, Maserati and associated parts, which had been discovered in a number of shipping containers on the fringes of a private airport in the South-East of England - very much the motoring equivalent of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
The Cavalino Hoard
Fontwell Park
In July 2018 we returned to Fontwell Park, immediately adjacent to Goodwood during the week of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, for our rregular Thursday afternoon auction event. Feature lots included a 1921 Wolesley 200-mile record car, the famous MG Cobra - an MGA fitted with a 428 Cobra Superjet engine, an AC Cobra 427, alongside an example of the ever increasingly popular Lamborghini Diablo.

CarFest
Coys once again supported BBC Children In Need at CarFest South at Jody Scheckter’s farm at Laverstoke Park, featuring a selection of rare Porsches celebrating the 70th anniversary of Porsche, a Lamborghini Miura, and the exBriggs Cunningham Birdcage Maserati.

Schloss Dyck
Clearly now one of the most well-attended and established classic road and track events in Europe, held in the grounds of the fabulous Schloss Dyck, fabulously located within a short driving distance of Dusseldorf, with fabulous connecions to that entire part of Europe, the auction at Classic Days at Schloss Dyck is always standing room only, and results were excellent, with the only blight being the record temperatures over the weekend, which certainly added to the atmosphere.
Schloss Dyck
Classic Days
Coys are delighted to be the ongoing auction partner at Classic Days Schloss Dyck. The largest automobile garden party - the classic and motor festival for the preservation of the castle and park - want to inspire the visitors again. Atmospheric and rare highlights are announced, anniversaries are celebrated at the castle, including the 90th birthday of racing legend Hans Herrmann.

The Wayne Plit Collection/ Johannesburg
As part of events held during the weekend of Concours South Africa at Steyn City in Johannesburg, we were delighted to have been appointed the sale of the Wayne Plit Collection, a fabulous and very diverse collection carefully and intelligently assembled. Africa’s first and largest historic motor car auction was a fabulous addition to the concours event.

Fontwell Park
Held at Fontwell Park during the weekend of the Goodwood Revival, and a stone’s throw from the Revival itself, our second Fontwell auction of the year turned out to be one of our most successful Fontwell events we have held. Especially during the weekend of the Revival, the Coys Throughbred & Vintage sale at Fontwell has now become a regular installment of the classic motoring activities taking place in the Chichester area during that week.
Fontwell Park
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting classic and historic motorsport, we with our partners Maserati SpA, provided the safety cars for the 2018 edition of the Best of Italy Race, a fantastic and challenging hill climb through the countryside outside of Piacenza, with the course being one of the longest ant most satisfying of its type in the world, coming in at just under 30km.

The Spirit of Motoring at Syon Park
Syon is one of the last great houses of London, and has been in the family of the present owners for more than 400 years. Profoundly historic, the House holds a wealth of art within its grand classical interiors, while the Park and Gardens feel like deep countryside, although barely nine miles from Charing Cross. The Syon Park auction, so fantastically located in the capital city, was again like many of these London stately home auctions, very well attended, with much success across the board.

Bellissime Parti di Automobili
Our inaugural auction at our Manor Court showrooms was taken by Coys auction director Nick Wells, and was again another privately owned collection of very rare and important Ferrari, Maserati and Aston Martin parts, amongst other marques.
Bellissime Parti di Automobili
True Greats
The traditional True Greats auction, held in early December at the Royal Horticultural Halls is now in its fourth decade, and is now the oldest auction of its type in London, for which we are justly proud. The auction itself was typified by a large percentage of privately owned, high-quality classic motor cars, all of which were sensibly priced, and the results speak for themselves.

Coys Showrooms
Coys showrooms and our private client business has been well-known and operational since before the Second World War. Quietly, professionally and efficiently, and without the fanfare associated with the sale of historic motor cars at auction, the Coys private client team, operating from the showrooms at Manor Court, have successfully completed the sale of motor cars with values totalling in the millions of pounds over the year.
