Dream Spirit

IFIGENIA TZOLA

She looks like a fairy, and she enthralls you with her effortless charm and her innate talent to embody different characters that win over your heart. Ifigenia Tzola is the most characteristic representative of a younger generation of talented actors who have been portraying important roles from a young age. In recent years, we have been enjoying her performances in primetime TV series with daily episodes, such as “I Gi tis Elias [The Land of Olives]”, where she plays Vasiliki, a heroine beloved by audiences from the very beginning. Our charismatic leading lady discusses her dreams, and how acting originally seemed like a fairy tale and eventually became a fabulous reality!

Από τη Μαρία
Photos
IFIGENIA TZOLA

Your relationship with acting goes way back, when you were eight years old and played the great Greek actress Aliki Vougiouglaki as a child in the TV series “Echo Ena Mystiko [I Have a Secret]”, and then little Anna in the blockbuster series “To Nisi [The island]”.

In truth, when did you realize that acting would be your professional identity? What do you remember thinking and feeling at that tender age?

For me, acting was a desire that was expressed from a very young age, since everything that drew my attention, I attempted to imitate. I consider myself very fortunate, since through my participation in these prestige productions I was able to confirm my initial instinct that acting was something that I truly enjoyed and that I wanted to take up later. I remember that for me, that whole experience was like a fairy tale that had begun, and I didn’t want it to end. Every day before filming began, I was filled with enthusiasm and also with a sweet anticipation for each subsequent day of filming.

And so we come to the present, and the fourth season of the very successful series “I Gi tis Elias [The Land of Olives]”. You hold one of the leading roles, that of Vasiliki, who has been one of the audience’s favorites since day one. What do you love the most about Vasiliki, and in what ways do you feel that you have evolved the part in these four years?

Vasiliki is a role in which, at least initially, I did not recognize almost anything in common with my own character. So, it was a great challenge for me to embody a character that is so different, and I am particularly happy that my work elicited such a positive response from the audience, who truly loved her. Here was a girl who had had a rough time and had to struggle to get back on her feet, and it was this development that I found especially satisfying. It is my belief that in life, we need to pursue our dreams and follow our heart. I am glad that my heroine also managed to do that, and I feel that I was able to imbue the character that I embody with a tad more strength, so that we can now witness her flourishing.

I imagine that after four years of working together, the show’s director Andreas Georgiou and the other contributors on “I Gi tis Elias” are more like family that just associates to you. In your view, what are the necessary aspects of a successful collaboration, and what are the elements of success of the series that was massively popular?

I will amend that to six years, since I was also involved in the previous series created by Andreas Georgiou and Koulis Nikolaou, “8 Lexeis [8 Words]”. They are, indeed, as family to me, my second family, as I like to say, because they believed in me from the very beginning, they embraced me and offered me the opportunity to stand next to them. It is lovely to work together with people that you have grown to love and consider very close to you. To me, the secret of a great collaboration, and a series’ success, is to maintain proper working conditions and to have mutual respect. It is very important to be satisfied in your workplace, because I believe that in that way you will be willing to give 100% of yourself, and that will ultimately produce the best outcome. And of course, all this dedication reaches the audiences that are watching, and that is why they have become such fans of the show and of us. However, we shouldn’t neglect the need for professionalism on both sides.

You are very active on social media and have many followers on Instagram. What do you wish to communicate through your account?

On my account, I wish to present to the world my true self. At the same time, I find it lovely to read opinions and advice about my work from the people who follow me. It is a lovely “dialogue” with the public, I would say.

How do you handle reviews, whether positive or negative? What motivates you to constantly evolve? I always accept reviews, whether negative or positive, but I ignore malicious critiques. I respect criticism, but I choose when to let it affect me. What motivates me, however, is my love for acting and my determination. When I take on something, I want to have the best possible outcome, and this is what constantly motivates me in my life.

Iphigenia, what is happiness for you? What part of it does acting cover, and what are your dreams for the future?

For me the definition of happiness is summed up in Tolstoy's saying, "The secret of happiness is not always doing what you want, but always wanting what you do." However, I would like to add that happiness is also intertwined with freedom, which is an equally important factor in being happy. For a person to be happy, they must have harmony and balance in their personal life, in their work and in their health. So, with acting in my life, I feel completely happy at work. I never stop having dreams, some more long-term and others more short-term. What I will say for now, though, is that I would like my work to evolve and grow, and to be well in my personal life.

A piece of advice for young people just starting out in pursuit of a career in acting?

To love the art of acting, to try to evolve and to be open to advice and stimuli that can be gained from more experienced individuals.

BOHO WINTER

Vintage pieces, dynamic accessories, elegant and feminine looks – discover all the key trends that will shape your wardrobe in the coming season!

SUEDE

This year, among fashion stylists, trend setters and celebrities all eyes were on the first collection by Chemena Kamali for Chloé. For the Fall/Winter season, the bohemian aesthetic is redefined, highlighting some of the most emblematic fashion elements of the seventies, such as crochet, fringe and transparencies. Pair them with worn denim, cowboy boots and leather jackets with metal rivets to revive a boho aesthetic through a contemporary lens.

The F/W '24 shows of the top brands reintroduced suede, granting it a starring role on every fashion item in the fall and winter wardrobe. This seductive fabric appears mostly in earthy brown tones, turning oversized bags, boots, jackets and skirts into the star items of the season.

CORPCORE POWER

This season, office wear looks have become progressively more severe, following the rules of Corpcore. Minimal lines, large shoulder pads on oversized jackets, tailored pants, pencil skirts, neckties and pumps are back in their most dynamic versions, upgrading “dull” office outfits into perfectly on-trend looks.

LEOPARD POWER

Leopard is undoubtedly the star animal print of the season. An easy and safe way to adopt the trend is through accessories. Kitten heels, bags, scarves, even hair accessories will add a trendy element to your looks, without requiring a major departure from your personal aesthetic and style.

COLOUR UPDATES

This year’s trends come in the most elegant shades, which promise to contribute to lavish looks. Cherry red is back in a big way, as one of the most flexible colors for the fall and winter wardrobe. Brown is the perfect substitute for black, while various shades of green are the most on-trend way to update your quiet luxury looks.

CHIC DRAPING

Draping is a must in the wardrobes of devotees of minimalism and quiet luxury, making it easy to put together effortlessly chic looks. Designers utilized this trend in tops, coats, sweaters, and flattering dresses, creating unique silhouettes.

COATS, BUT MAKE A STATEMENT

The top fashion houses and brands are investing heavily in statements overcoats, establishing one of the key trends for winter. Long leather trench coats, Penny Lane coats, or oversized coats with large collars are only some of the options shown by designers, which will accompany you on cold winter days.

FUR MANIA

Faux fur coats are back in a big way, with fashion houses including Prada, Balmain and Loewe incorporating it into some of their most iconic runway looks. However, this season, do not limit yourself to overcoats: faux fur is making star turns on accessories such as bags and shoes, adding a note of luxury to any look.

Skin Care for Every Age

For this summer, trends call for us to experiment with our makeup, focus on elegance, and emphasize effective skin care.

20s: Time for Glow

In your twenties, your skin is at its best! However, prevention is the key to preserving good facial hydration and a healthy glow.

The skincare essentials:

Sun protection: Sunscreen must be part of every skincare routine and used year-round, in order to protect your face from the harmful effects of sun exposure.

BHAs.

Double cleansing: At the end of the day, double cleansing is necessary to effectively remove all traces of makeup, sunscreen and pollution from your face. Start with a hydrating cleansing balm and follow it up with a mild cleansing gel, suited to your skin’s type and specific needs.

Moisturizer: After each cleansing, make sure to apply moisturizer, to restore hydration. Choose a product with light texture, with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, ingredients that will rehydrate your skin and help eliminate any discoloration.

Evening exfoliation: If your skin needs exfoliation, invest in a mild peeling serum with BHAs.

Από τη Μαρία Ταυρίδου By Maria Tavridou

30s: Time for Prevention

In your thirties, the first signs of aging appear, and your skincare routine needs to change.

The skincare essentials:

Cleanser: User a face cleanser with galactic acid or moisturizing elements such as allantoin and ingredients that will not dry out your skin.

Vitamin C: Enhance your skin’s natural glow and protect against free radicals with vitamin C.

Antiwrinkle cream: Enhance your evening skincare routine with a moisturizing cream with peptides, ceramides, and antioxidants, to combat the appearance of fine lines.

Retinol: Slowly and steadily, begin incorporating retinol into your routine, to enhance cell regeneration and boost collagen production.

40s: Time for Collagen Boost

Τα skin care essentials:

In your forties, the signs of aging become more pronounced and skin elasticity is reduced.

The skincare essentials:

Cleanser: Start by incorporating into your routine a mild cleanser with glycolic acid, which will rejuvenate the surface of your skin.

Peptide serum: One of the most effective ways to restore firmness to skin contours are peptides. Invest in a serum with peptides as the main ingredient, which will strengthen collagen production.

Moisturizer with retinoids: The use of powerful retinoids is now a must. They are effective in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and restoring skin elasticity.

Eye cream: In your forties, applying eye cream becomes necessary. Invest in an enhanced eye cream with caffeine for dark circles and retinol for fine lines.

Skin Care for Every Age

50s+: Time for Hydration

Τα skin care essentials:

Starting in your fifties, skin becomes progressively thinner and more brittle.

The skincare essentials:

Cleanser: Use a mild, moisturizing cleanser, rich in hydrating oils and ceramides, to keep your skin as hydrated as possible. Rich moisturizing serum: Choose a serum with hyaluronic acid combined with panthenol for even deeper hydration.

Moisturizer with retinoids and peptides: In order to restore the face and neck area, while also reducing the appearance of wrinkles, invest in face moisturizers with retinoids and peptides as the main ingredients.

Vitamin C and SPF: Vitamin C, always applied together with adequate protection against the sun’s radiation, will help combat free radicals that are responsible for oxidizing stress and skin aging, while also eliminating signs of hyperpigmentation.

Sustainability on the spotlight!

Makedonia Palace Hotel broadens the agenda of sustainable practices being implemented and makes sustainability the main focus of every hotel operation. The hotel’s Sustainability Committee analyzes the implemented ESG practices and how these can affect the future not just of Makedonia Palace, but of the Greek tourism product.

Sustainability

Periklis Vogiatzis

Hotel Manager Makedonia Palace

What does ESG stand for, and which basic practices do you implement at Makedonia Palace?

The acronym ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance, which constitute the three pillars of sustainability. This means that we seek to meet the needs of the present, without endangering the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, ensuring there is a balance between economic growth, environmental protection, and social welfare. Our basic practices include recycling and waste reduction, reducing energy and water consumption, and adopting policies and a code of conduct.

How do these practices affect the hotel’s operation?

These practices have a net positive impact on our hotel. On the one hand, their implementation is our joint responsibility, and on the other hand, it is an opportunity to save resources by being able to operate with lower utility consumption.

How do you train your staff? Are there special seminars or training programs that you attend?

For our staff’s training, we work closely with specialized companies in the field, which undertake to carry out our training and to plan an ongoing program that aims to educate and enhance the knowledge of every employee of Makedonia Palace.

As Hotel Manager, how do you ensure excellent collaboration between the various hotel departments, as regards the implementation of the ESG practices that you have adopted? Ensuring excellent collaboration between the hotel’s various departments is critical for the success of our ESG strategy. The ongoing training of staff from all departments, the recognition of their role in the process and its impact on the environment and society, open communication procedures and regular interdepartmental meetings, and setting specific goals and carrying out regular audits and assessments, are all strategies that ensure that we are all working towards a common goal.

You have been a tourism professional and a member of staff at Makedonia Palace for over 20 years. On a personal level, do you feel that you have evolved through this training and your involvement with ESG?

The terms viability and sustainability have become the focus of attention in recent years, and many organizations have recognized their value and their positive effect on local communities, the reduction of environmental impacts, and the strengthening of transparency and ethical governance. It is my belief that training in and the practical implementation of ESG strategies contribute not only to professional growth, but also to the personal evolution of each individual.

Sustainability

on the spotlight!

Alexandra Betsi

Revenue Manager Makedonia Palace

(Sustainability Committee),

Manager, Hotel Manager, Procurement Director, Budget & Revenue Director, HR Manager, Marketing Manager, Marketing Executive, Electrical Engineer, Quality Manager).

How do you integrate sustainability elements into market analysis and customer acquisition?

At Makedonia Palace, we integrate sustainability into all levels of market analysis and customer acquisition by continuously monitoring international trends and guest preferences for more responsible travel choices. We utilize data and research to understand our customers’ needs and we adapt our services respectively, offering sustainable products, local food choices and environmentally responsible management of energy and water resources.

Which initiatives have you adopted to attract customers who are interested in sustainability and ecology?

We seek to offer our guests a responsible and at the same time comfortable experience, by combining hospitality with environmental awareness. Our hotel has been awarded the recognized “Greek Key” sustainability certification. We focus on maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing CO2 emissions. We carry out monthly measurements of emissions and electricity, water and natural gas consumption. We have replaced energyconsuming equipment with newer, state-of-the-art models and we have installed LED lighting throughout the hotel. Furthermore, we recycle and implement waste reduction practices. At the hotel’s restaurant, we prioritize local and organic products, supporting local communities and reducing CO2 emissions, as we do not transport products across large distances.

Which are the greatest challenges that you face in combining revenue growth with sustainability practices, and how do you overcome them?

Sustainability strategies often require investing in technology, training, processes, and supplies, which may increase operating costs. This creates the challenge of maintaining price competitiveness without reducing profit margins. To overcome this, we adopt flexible pricing policies that take into account the value of sustainability as a differentiation factor. We aim at audiences from international markets who choose hotels with the implementation of sustainable practices very high on their list of priorities, recognizing them as added value.

How do you collaborate with other teams (e.g., Marketing, Operations) to ensure that sustainable practices are promoted across all aspects of the hotel?

Which strategies do you implement to ensure that room prices reflect the sustainable practices implemented by Makedonia Palace?

Sustainability is integrated into every aspect of our operation and directly influences our pricing strategy. Through conscious choices, we do not implement strategies of large discounts or offers, so that our prices can reflect our commitment to responsible tourism development, at the same time ensuring the quality of our guests’ experience. Makedonia Palace is a hotel that makes conscious choices to support environmental protection and social responsibility, without sacrificing customer experience.

In order to achieve careful planning and a powerful strategy, we have established the Sustainability Committee, which includes the heads and executives from various hotel departments (General Manager, Hotel Manager, Procurement Director, Budget & Revenue Director, HR Manager, Marketing Manager, Marketing Executive, Electrical Engineer, Quality Manager). The Committee meets on a regular basis and works closely together to ensure that our environmental and social initiatives do not negatively impact the hotel’s financial performance.

Eleni Argiriadou

HR Manager Makedonia Palace

Makedonia Palace is renowned for the exceptional workplace environment it provides for its employees. Has the implementation of ESG practices altered the hotel’s workplace culture?

The hotel has commenced all stages in regard to ESG criteria. However, a change in workplace culture is more necessary than ever. An important way to change the culture is by changing the way that incentives are given to the various teams, including integrating goals with social impact in the provided benefits. These activities, which strengthen the S factor in our organization, include volunteerism, which adds value to the hotel by contributing to the common good and helping our community change for the better.

How do you collaborate with local communities to implement sustainable practices and what is your role, as HR Manger, in these partnerships?

On this subject, I can point to a wealth of partnerships. Indicatively, in the framework of further supporting the inclusion of employees with a refugee background we work with the employment team of the NGO Solidarity Now. Furthermore, we have an excellent collaboration with the team from the Department of Healthcare Visitors of the AHEPA Hospital Blood Center. My role, as HR Manager, in all of the above is to maintain the relationships and partnerships that I have developed with the people in these organizations, and to engage hotel employees in these activities.

Do the ESG practices adopted by Makedonia Palace affect the hiring and training procedures for hotel employees?

I wouldn’t say that they have affected the hiring process yet, although our hiring criteria at the hotel never excluded any social group. Historically, the only general criterion has been, and remains, diligence and a strong work ethic. Regarding staff training, it begins on the first day of work on ESG practices by Department Heads, who are in turn also trained by the business on sustainability issues.

As HR Manager, do you find that ESG practices can eventually contribute to the shaping of more diverse and inclusive workplaces? If so, what may be the benefits for the community of Thessaloniki?

The implemented policies for the support of people, the local community and the environment will certainly contribute to the creation of more diverse and inclusive workplaces. This will provide people with the opportunity to share their knowledge and interests with their colleagues and to make diversity acceptable. The benefits that result from the above relate to the fact that everyone has something to offer and is “worthy” and should not be underestimated simply for being different. Helping others generates a sense of completion and unites people, enhancing their identity and self-worth. If the culture of an organization “permits” every employee to express in practice their interest for environmental, social and cultural impacts, then this initially benefits the immediate community – in our case, the city of Thessaloniki – and as a result, society at large.

Rena Tsaligopoulou

Marketing Manager Makedonia Palace

Which are the main ESG practices implement by Makedonia Palace, and how do you communicate them to your guests?

Makedonia Palace always implemented practices for the protection of the environment, employees, and the community, and always follows health and safety protocols. But with sustainability becoming an integral part of our lives, we have decided to gather all of these practices together, so that we can communicate them to the public starting in the new year. We focus greatly on environmental practices through certifications, cleaning protocols and the adoption of practices that reduce energy consumption, thus contributing to a reduced environmental footprint. We also place great emphasis on social practices through continuous staff training and support for the local community. Finally, we implement corporate governance processes, resulting in distinctions that affirm our commitment to business excellence and legal compliance.

How do you evaluate the impact of the sustainable practices you implement on your guests’ experience? Do you have any feedback from your guests regarding these initiatives?

Some of the measures that we implement are perceived by guests because they concern them, such as, for example, their safety, cleanliness and health measures, and the quality of provided services. The impact of sustainability practices on guest experience is also measured through reviews analysis, satisfaction scores, and loyalty and trust indicators. We have succeeded in having many repeat customers and our relations are more than just professional.

Our customers’ loyalty to the hotel is the greatest reward for our efforts, and the ultimate positive feedback regarding their hospitality experience at Makedonia Palace.

How do you collaborate with other local businesses and organizations to increase sustainability in Thessaloniki?

Makedonia Palace, being an iconic Thessaloniki hotel, works closely with local businesses and organizations to promote sustainability in the city, through the procurement of local products, highlighting the local cuisine, participating in local events, etc. Through these partnerships, we aim to strengthen the local economy, promote cultural heritage, and contribute to the sustainable development of the area, and to make Thessaloniki a top tourism destination globally.

Which new trends or innovations in the field of sustainability do you monitor and how do you intend to incorporate them in the future strategies of Makedonia Palace?

In the field of sustainability there are constantly new trends and innovations emerging that affect the tourism sector. Makedonia Palace closely monitors these developments and plans to incorporate practices in its future marketing strategies that relate to digital transformation, promoting local products, training guests, and continuous transparency certifications. By incorporating these trends and innovations, Makedonia Palace aims to strengthen its leading position in sustainable hospitality, by offering unique and environmentally and socially responsible experiences to its guests.

Thanasis Tanis

Which processes do you implement to monitor and evaluate your sustainable practices and how do you incorporate these findings in your strategy?

Sustainability and green practices are nothing new to Makedonia Palace. The hotel has been operating for years according to the values represented by ESG and testament to this are the various certifications and distinctions that we are awarded every year. The data we collect, through evaluation and comparison, help us to assess our activities, modify our goals and revise – when necessary – our strategy.

Which initiatives have you taken to conserve power and water, reduce waste and promote recycling in the hotel?

In regard to conservation, the hotel has been operating for years according to high standards. The latest touch concerned the replacement of energy-consuming equipment with newer, stateof-the-art models that deliver lower consumption and higher efficiency. Regarding waste, we implement a precise system to anticipate demand in order to avoid excessive orders of raw materials, and a strict first in – first out (FIFO) policy for stock circulation to eliminate food spoilage. Finally, we have extended recycling to more materials and, in addition to glass, plastic and paper, we now recycle batteries, lighting bulbs, toners and used cooking oils.

In your view, how have ESG practices improved the quality of provided services in the hotel’s housekeeping, catering and front desk departments?

The operating procedures of the stated departments formed the foundation on which we created the hotel’s ESG strategy. Our goal is, through continuous training and technological advancement, to update the practices of all our departments.

Do you believe that the adoption of ESG practices can have a positive impact on the quality of the Greek tourism product?

I am fully confident that adopting sustainable practices will be a net positive for our country’s tourism industry, because it is an issue of major importance for our time. It is already a prerequisite to enter into partnerships with tourism agencies and operators, and even individual visitors who chose Greece as their destination are becoming aware of the importance of this issue.

Vasilis Paschalis

Supplier Manager Makedonia Palace

What challenges associated with sustainability do you encounter when working with suppliers, and how do you overcome them?

Through ongoing communication with our suppliers, we undertake regular audits and provide updates on the ESG policies and procedures that we have adopted. However, finding sustainable products that meet the hotel’s high quality standards and are also competitively priced can be difficult. Sometimes, there aren’t enough certifications or specialized audits. To overcome these hurdles, we prefer to collaborate with suppliers who can provide transparent and reliable audit and certification mechanisms for their manufacturing processes and their products.

Which sustainable practices or products have proven more effective in reducing the hotel’s environmental footprint?

The cleaning products we use are certified and we carry out continuous staff training to ensure their proper use. We also prefer to work with local suppliers who adopt sustainable practices in their manufacturing processes. This reduces CO2 emissions related to transportation and strengthens the local economy. At the same time, we have incorporated local organic products in our hotel’s catering services.

Which trends or innovations in sustainability do you think will influence the hospitality industry in the coming years?

Overall, sustainability and technology will continue to evolve hand in hand and to shape the way that the hospitality industry works. Those hotels that adopt innovative technologies and sustainable practices will stand out and satisfy consumers’ growing need for environmental responsibility and social awareness.

In your view, what are the most important benefits from the implementation of ESG practices for the hotel, and for the Greek tourism product in general?

For the hotel, implementing ESG practices is beneficial overall, since it increases our competitiveness, reduces our environmental footprint, promotes social responsibility and ensures the longterm viability of the business. As for the Greek tourism product, implementing ESG practices will contribute to the emergence of a more responsible, sustainable and reliable tourism destination and will strengthen the country’s standing in international markets.

Days well spent in Thessaloniki

“No one shall be stateless so long as Thessaloniki exists”, wrote the scholar Nicephorus Houmnos in the 14th century C.E., and to this day his saying still rings true. The Nymph of Thermaikos Bay opens her arms to embrace all travelers, to generously grant them her beauty and her warm hospitality. Thessaloniki never disappoints; if you relinquish yourself to it, it will feel like home.

In the co-capital of Greece, you will find everything you expect in a contemporary city that is founded on a glorious past. Thessaloniki is literally built on History, and is waiting for you to discover all those elements that will make you return to the city again and again… Just a few days are enough for you to succumb to its charms.

A walk along the waterfront

Thermaikos Bay embraces the city of Thessaloniki, creating a coastline of unique beauty. A walk or bicycle ride along the New Waterfront offers a succession of amazing views. The umbrellas installation by George Zongolopoulos, the statue of Alexander the Great, the White Tower, the Port, the allday floating bars… A breathtaking sunset, a romantic mood and a view that you can’t get enough of, with a Thessalonikistyle sesame bagel in hand. You don’t need much!

Must Do: Climb up the six floors of the White Tower, which is 34 meters tall and served as a prison in the 12th century C.E. After seeing the unique exhibits on display and learning about the tower’s long history, you will reach the top. From there, you can enjoy the most majestic view of the entire New Waterfront.

Must

Strolling in the city center

The center of Thessaloniki is ideal for strolling, shopping, sightseeing, and dining, with many options for all the above. After passing by the Arch of Galerius (Kamara), a famous rendezvous point for locals, and the Rotonda monument, head from Egnatia Street towards Aristotelous Square –another popular meeting point for residents and visitors alike.

Must Do: Enjoy a cup of coffee, catch a movie at the historic Olympion Theater that is the home of the annual Thessaloniki International Film Festival, walk down Tsimiski and Mitropoleos streets, the city's most famous thoroughfares with the impressive shop windows. Of course, the picturesque Ladadika area is the place to be for the perfect ending to a lovely day.

Thessaloniki International Fair and OTE Tower

The Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) is an integral part of the city’s history, its economy and its culture, and a seminal event that has been held every September since 1926. If you are in the city when TIF is on, you must definitely visit. The fairgrounds also host other important events throughout the year.

Must Do: Make sure to go up the 76-meter OTE Tower, where you can enjoy coffee with the most amazing view from above, at the rotating café bar on the top floor.
