Dear Families and Friends of CPA,

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

As the Academy moves closer to thirty years of ministry, this continues to be a very exciting time for us. This past year, we reached a record enrollment of about 1,040 K-12 students. Not only did we open a new, state-of-the-art high school building, but we also saw nearly every square foot of our facilities renovated and improved. We experienced tremendous success in every facet of the Academy’s life. In Athletics, for example, both the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams won state championships; the football team advanced to the state semifinals; and the girls’ soccer team reached the state-championship game—among many other accolades. The numerous highlights for our Fine Arts program included stellar productions of You Can’t Take It With You, Carousel, and the biannual ArtWorks student/alumni showcase. Academically, the senior class had two National Merit Finalists and CPA’s first-ever appointment to the United States Naval Academy (see page 35). Spiritually, our students launched and ran ministries, went on mission trips, and shared the Gospel in their surrounding communities. Your Board of Trustees is very grateful for the Godly leadership of our Headmaster, Richard Anderson, and Assistant Headmaster, Nate Morrow. They lead the very best faculty and staff in Nashville, numbering more than 200 strong. In addition, I would like to thank Dr. Wilson Benton, Christ Presbyterian Church Interim Pastor, for his tremendous love and support over the past five years. It was with equal love and affection that we welcomed new CPC Senior Pastor Scott Sauls in the spring of 2012. As CPA works “From This Property” to inculcate your covenant children with a Christ-centered world- and life-view and send them out to all corners of the globe, I am pleased to report that the Lord has blessed us and positioned the Academy for continued growth and success. Dear CPA Family, Thirty years ago, the property at 2323 Old Hickory Boulevard was a fifty-acre pasture. A blue, wooden sign out by the road proclaimed: “Future Home of Christ Presbyterian Church. From this property, believers will gather to worship the Living God and will be sent forth to minister to Nashville, to Middle Tennessee, and to the world.” “From this property”… has been fulfilled in the 1,170 graduates of Christ Presbyterian Academy in the twenty-seven previous school years…in the twenty-one previous senior classes. CPA graduates have, indeed, gone forth from this property. They have, indeed, been His witnesses in Jerusalem (their hometown)...in Judea (their home region)...in Samaria (foreign cultures)...and to the very ends of the earth. In previous surveys, CPA graduates report back to us that they have gone forth from this property: a. Academically prepared; and b. Spiritually grounded. This is all that we can ask of this Christian education...of this Christian worldview. Armed with current technology—and new academic initiatives—CPA is educating today’s students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. High-School Highlights: • 110 high-school courses offered in nine disciplines, including honors and 15 AP • 79% of seniors and 43% of juniors took at least one AP course during 2011-12 • 26 average ACT score; 24% of students from Class of 2012 scored 30+ on ACT, equivalent to 1320 on SAT • Students awarded National Merit Scholars, Semifinalists, Finalists and Commended Scholars • Historically, 100% of students accepted into a four-year college/university

CPA Annual Fund The CPA Annual Fund enhances all aspects of the CPA Board CPA experience by providing for needs of Trustees: not covered within the annual operating budget. This year marked the first-ever 100% 100% Participation Campaign for the CPA Annual Fund. Everyone associated with the Academy, from the Board of Trustees to CPA parents, was encouraged to make a gift to the CPA Annual Fund during CPA the 2011 fiscal year. The first-ever Academy fundraiser of its kind, Peter Cetera @ The Factory was a huge success. On September 22, over 450 attendees enjoyed an exciting evening that included live and silent auctions, hors d’oeuvres, and classic tunes performed by legendary Grammy-winning CPA dad Peter Cetera (and his special guest, fellow CPA dad and acclaimed singer/songwriter John Elefante). Our heartfelt thanks go out to Peter Cetera and his band for so graciously providing the entertainment for this wonderful evening. And thanks to all of the volunteers, event sponsors, auction donors, and everyone who purchased tickets. Through all of your efforts, more than $100,000 was raised to support the Believe Capital Campaign!

Ellie Bannister Holcomb ’01 For Ellie Bannister Holcomb ’01, pursuing music full-time is an incredible journey of faith and trusting in God’s provision. But the journey didn’t begin when she first started touring, recording, and writing

with her husband and best friend, Drew Holcomb, in 2007. It has been a lifelong journey, even dating back to her first days of kindergarten at CPA. Ellie remembers her years at the Academy as a time when she learned “to strive for excellence, to pursue real relationships, and to above all else lean on the arms of Jesus.” From learning to love literature in Mrs. Deanne Carroll’s class, to writing under Mrs. Joy MacKenzie’s passionate instruction, to honing her creative talents under the watchful eyes of Mrs. Paula Flautt and Mrs. Lynn Jung, Ellie’s post-high school years were tremendously shaped by her CPA experience. “I will never forget watching Mr. (Bill) Delvaux shatter a glass vase against a wall to illustrate how hopeless we are without Jesus,” Ellie relates. “These are lessons that have carried me through all kinds of seasons of my life, and for that I am grateful.”

Brad Faulk ’99 married Danielle Baugh on July 14, 2012, in Guntersville, AL. The couple resides in Nashville. Corby Shields ’99 and wife Rachel are moving to the Boston area to plant a PCA church. They have three children, Hank, Reesie, and Barnes. Ian Campbell ’00 founded NextInput, a Georgia Tech Advanced Technology Development Center company commercializing a novel touchscreen technology within the electronics industry, in February 2012. Ian serves as Chief Operating Office for NextInput, which is headquartered in Atlanta, and he also holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from MTSU and a dual MBA/M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech. 4 Zach Dorris ’00 and wife Jamie welcomed first child Elijah Motoichi on July 28, 2011.

Will Atkins ’01

After high school, Ellie earned her master’s degree in secondary education and taught English. It was a dream she pursued thanks to the many teachers who had impacted her own life and her desire to do the same for other young people. Her love for music remained strong, however, and in 2007, she decided to pursue music full time with her husband Drew and their band, The Neighbors. Over the years, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors have released five records, with their most recent record Chasing Someday going #1 on the Singer/Songwriter Chart on iTunes and #7 on the overall iTunes chart. The band tours over 200 days a year and has opened for acts like the Goo Goo Dolls, Marc Broussard, and the Avett Brothers. Their songs are a popular choice for major television shows, and they have had placements on shows like Parenthood, Brothers and Sisters, One Tree Hill, and House. Their song “Live Forever” was the soundtrack to the Emmy-winning NBA video that kicked off the 2012 NBA season on TNT. More recently, Ellie released an individual effort of songs based off the Psalms titled Magnolia EP. Her record was at the top of the Christian/Gospel iTunes charts for a week, but Ellie drew the most joy from creating the album with “two of the men I love most in the world—my husband and my dad, Brown Bannister.” Always seeking ways to serve through their talents, Ellie and Drew enjoy volunteering with Young Life in the summer as in-house musicians at their camps across the country. It is an opportunity for them to minister through their music and encourage students to stay grounded in the love of Jesus while finding their identity in Him. It’s a foundational truth they have learned from experience. “The music industry is a roller coaster,” Ellie shares, “so it has been sweet to learn to base our worth in what God says about us instead of how people respond or don’t respond to our music.”

Mac Purdy ’92 As one of eight members of the first graduating class of seniors at CPA, Mac Purdy ’92, has seen a lot of changes throughout the Academy’s history. Now that his daughters Scarritt (5th grade) and Mackinlay (2nd grade) and son Baden (CPA Preschool) are following in his footsteps, Mac gets to see the Academy through a new lens. “As a parent,” Mac relates, “I notice that the community, the culture, and the core of the Academy’s mission is the same.”

Zach Ferrell ’05 and Rachel Robbins Ferrell ’06 For Zach Ferrell ’05 and

Rachel Robbins Ferrell ’06, CPA was the common factor that brought them together. Zach and Rachel started dating while in high school and were married in 2009. Their years at the Academy, however, were more than just an opportunity to meet each other. “It was my second home,” Zach shares. “I spent a lot of time at CPA and it helped shape who I was as a student, athlete, and Christian.” Rachel also considers her time at CPA as greatly important, sharing that she met “some of the most important and influential people (in my life) at CPA.” The Ferrells’ individual and shared experiences at the Academy also proved to be hugely influential in their decision to enter into a life of service together through inner city ministry in Chattanooga, TN. For Zach, the call to inner city ministry was laid on his heart during middle and high school as a result of volunteering with Salama Urban Ministries. More specifically, Zach observed how Stan Weber, founder and Executive Director of Salama, and his wife, Alice Weber, lived in the inner city among the community they served. It wasn’t long before Zach knew he wanted to do the same thing one day. For Rachel, the call to inner city ministry also occurred early. “On a service day in middle school, we went to a day care downtown and took care of kids from low-income families,” Rachel relates. “God really laid a passion on my heart for that community.” After graduating from CPA, Zach attended and played basketball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Rachel also went to

UTC, and they chose to stay in the Chattanooga community after getting married. Zach is the Urban Ministry Area Representative for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and works in all the inner city Chattanooga middle and high schools. But their ministry extends even beyond his work with FCA. “Rachel and I live in one of the inner city communities,” Zach explains, “where our goal is to be salt and light in a dark place. God has given us an opportunity to build relationships with many kids and families in a tough neighborhood in order to be a living image of Christ and that is our goal every day.” The Ferrells have made an intentional effort to open their home to the neighborhood. “We have kids spend the night on Saturdays and take them to church the next morning with us,” Rachel shares.” “During the week, we go to their school games, cook meals, and ask about their grades. We do life with these kids who we consider our family.” Zach and Rachel both recognize the role that their time at CPA played in preparing them to serve in ministry together. From being encouraged by Mr. Dan Carpenter to do their best in every aspect of life to learning from Coach Scott Oatsvall how to live out their faith every day, they both value the privilege they had to attend a school that prepared them educationally and spiritually. And the Ferrells know first-hand that not every child has the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment like CPA where the faculty and staff truly care about the students. “Attending CPA is a privilege,” Rachel shares with current Academy students, “so don’t take it for granted. And always remember that you are never too young to serve God with all your heart!”

Career Day On March 2, CPA High School students enjoyed time away from their usual classes to listen to and visit with professional guests during the annual Career Day event at the Academy. More than 70 panelists – alumni, parents, and community members – shared their professional experiences with the students.

Anna completed her sophomore year at Trevecca Nazarene University, was the leading scorer for the Trojan women’s basketball team, and was named second team NCCAA All American. Emma Catlett ’11 attends Vanderbilt University. In April 2012, she received the prestigious Ingram Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate a willingness and ability to combine a successful business or professional career with a lifelong commitment to finding solutions to critical societal problems. Recipients must be committed to positive social change and possess maturity, leadership, and initiative. Homecoming 2011 Recap Homecoming 2011 was an exciting weekend for alumni and their families. The festivities kicked off with the annual CPA Alumni Community Tailgate on Friday, October 14, 2011. More than 200 alumni and their family members, alumni parents, and current and former CPA faculty/staff members enjoyed live music provided by current Academy students, and plenty of tailgate food. It was the largest Alumni Community Tailgate ever! Alumni children especially enjoyed the Lion Cubs Play Area, complete with mini-CPA footballs and spirit shakers. CPA cheerleaders shared their Lion spirit by giving out temporary tattoos, and everyone had a great time roasting marshmallows over the fire pit and making sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;mores. The night was capped off with a CPA Lions victory in the Den versus the Whites Creek Cobras!

Saturday of Homecoming weekend included the first-ever Alumni Flag Football Game and Alumni Community Lunch with a Preview of the Fine Arts Presentation of You Canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Take it With You. The performance was particularly special for the alumni in the audience who were members of the cast and crew for the production of the same show on the CPA stage in 1994 and 2001. And with a special guest performance by the student vocal group Vision, the event highlighted the amazing artistic talents of CPA students!

First Impressions

We asked several new CPA employees to share about their experiences during the 2011-12 school year. Here are their thoughts… As a parent, my favorite characteristic of CPA has always been the community. Last year I was new to the faculty. The feeling of community is, if anything, even stronger among the faculty. I have been loved well through my fellow teachers. CPA strikes that impossible balance between an atmosphere where excellence is expected and pursued, but grace and love abound in all situations. It is a privilege to work with these gifted individuals. — Rachel Roper, High School Bible Teacher As I look back on my first year I remember frequently saying to my husband how close everyone was—and I felt at home from day one. I have taught in many different situations, and I love the depth in which the faculty cares for each other. Having Jesus as our center makes a significant difference in relationships at work. I also have been so impressed to hear students thank God for this school and the environment—not just sometimes, but it seems every time a student prayed the first thing stated was, “Thank you, God, for letting us go to a place where we can worship you.” Lastly, I appreciate the fact that the administration really does want God to be glorified and for the students to be treated as His precious ones. — Diane Wright, MS Science Teacher I never knew a place could be so welcoming and make you feel like you’ve been there forever. When I got a call from Mike Ellson offering me the coaching job, my husband and I fully trusted God and moved our family from Jackson, Tenn., in a month’s time. We knew nothing of CPA, but when we got here we found out quickly how truly blessed our family is that God brought us to this amazing place. I attended both a private high school and college, but neither is comparable to the amount of spirituality found here and the love for one another that is shown all around. God is at work daily in all aspects of CPA. Each faculty and staff member are Godly examples of who we as Christians should be. My eyes filled up with tears as Mr. Anderson opened our first full faculty gathering of in-service for the 2011-12 school year with prayer. It felt surreal to be joining many teachers who had spoken truth to me, loved me, and challenged me in my years as a student at CPA. The Lord’s timing had been so surprising, gracious, and sweet in providing me an opportunity to join the faculty at CPA that I could hardly believe it. The tears popped up again during the first week of school during our upper elementary chapel. Hearing the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students sing the alma mater was overwhelming. The knowledge that I might play a small part in teaching these covenant children that “through our victories, through all our pain, we’ve been forged by His holy flame, and we will stand as His grand display” was exhilarating, yet greatly humbling. That is one of my favorite things about teaching at CPA. — Beth Graham, Third Grade Teacher I loved my first year at CPA. It’s a joy to get to come to work every day at a place I love, with people I love, teaching kids I love. I find it ridiculous that I get paid to study about Jesus and teach the Bible to these students. Eighth-Grade Crossover was a highlight, to see at the end of the year how the sometimes mundaneness of day-to-day life ended up in something beautiful, in changed lives, in strong relationships, and in redemption. It was all worth it. — Elliott Cherry, Middle School Bible CPA has a great reputation. I had been hearing about it for years through various venues, so my expectations were predetermined before I came to the school. I had a fantastic first year. CPA parents and students are awesome. The administrative team is purposedriven. Christie Bowen has a very difficult job, which puts her in a position of dealing with many conflicts; she does a fabulous job. Nate Morrow leads with passion and purpose. The underpinnings of running a school are strenuous and unending. Richard Anderson has trained his people with integrity and precision. These folks must deal with a myriad of viewpoints on how things should be done. They do a fantastic job at filtering every decision through the mission statement of CPA. I love working here, and I find great peace in my heart when I drive onto campus each morning. Thank you for this opportunity to share. — Kathryn Kitchen, HS Math Teacher

CPA Academics

2011-12 Highlights

The 2011-2012 school year was one of great growth for the educational programs at CPA. In response to current research and professional development, the faculty worked to implement new and innovative teaching methods that make learning more relevant and more compelling across grade levels. Teachers spent more than 40 hours learning about new educational research findings, collectively studying student performance data, collaborating with their teams to map out their units of instruction, and refining their teaching techniques with newly developed practices.

• CPA Tech Team: The team formed a plan for the further integration of technology and learning, with the goal of ensuring the most relevant and responsible use of technology for our students.

• 21st Century Skills: Teams of teachers and administrators worked in collaboration to research new uses of technology and methods of teaching that equip students with critical skills for learning and working.

Teachers continue to involve students fully in active learning, cooperative work, and critical thinking using project-based and problem-solving activities at all grade levels. The academic standards clearly define the skills and knowledge students must learn, while comprehensive and ongoing assessments show evidence that the learning is happening. A structure of support for students is in place for those who do not learn a concept or who need more time and assistance to master a unit; enrichment opportunities and multi-level activities are utilized daily to ensure that students who master concepts quickly continue to learn at deeper levels.

• Curriculum Alignment and Standards: We are in our third year of mapping the curriculum using Atlas, seeking vertical alignment of our curriculum and teaching to standards. The emphasis this year was on using Atlas’ search and analysis tools to discuss and review the vertical alignment of the curriculum; this will be an ongoing focus.

CPA is committed to challenging its students to grow academically as well as personally and spiritually. Such growth occurs only with challenge, with struggle, and ultimately with accomplishment. This pattern of growth is evident in our students, in our faculty, and on a larger scale, in the greater CPA learning community.

• Continuous Improvement Plan: The CIP includes many academic goals set as a result of our successful accreditation process in the spring of 2011. While the CIP represents a multi-year plan, all academic goals have been met and all ongoing academic goals have been implemented.

• Enrichment Opportunities: Summer Scholars was in its eighth year in 2012. The program had a record number of participants. In addition, 33 elementary students in grades K-5 met all year on Friday mornings before school with a chess master to learn strategic techniques. The students formed teams and competed in four city/regional tournaments. Each of CPA’s five Destination ImagiNation teams advanced to the state tournament; the middle-school team won 1st place and competed at the Global Finals; two teams missed qualifying for Globals by just one place.

• Curriculum Mapping with Atlas: Teachers mapped their units of instruction in great detail, shared their maps with one another, and used the maps to analyze the alignment of the curriculum and the implementation of academic standards.

• Learning About Learning: Launched a series of informationpacked discussions for parents, exploring the processes of learning and how students’ learning affects parenting. The sessions were recorded with LiveScribe and posted on cpalions.org.

Preschool is the time when children learn the building blocks of language, the fundamentals of math, and how to be a good friend— when they learn to make good choices, how to play, and who they are as individuals that are uniquely, wonderfully created by God. Our Bible curriculum teaches the children the Westminster Shorter Westminster Catechism through Bible stories, music and sign language. To hear our children sing and know Who created them and all He created them to be brings joy to the children, their parents and our faculty.

CPA Preschool teachers know and understand how children learn and what is developmentally appropriate. Using a research-based curriculum that is child focused and play based, we humbly and intentionally work with children in their play to stretch and grow them to be who God created them to be. In God’s timeline, this is how He designed them. In concert with CPA’s mission and motto, we work with the children to impart important 21st-century skills such as creativity, teamwork, helping others, technology, and learning about God. CPA Elementary School

2011-12 Highlights • 20% growth in faculty and student population

Improvement was the key word for all that took place on campus from the summer of 2011 through the end of the 2011-2012 school year. The elimination of unneeded clutter, redesigned learning spaces, completion of curriculum mapping, a new reading program, new library space, reorganized and expanded physical-education equipment, more students, new teachers, additional classrooms, continuation of Destination ImagiNation, enrichment groups, differentiated instructional groups, the addition of an elementary chess club and a first time “Principals’ Lunch” (honoring upper elementary students with straight As or no tallies) all provided opportunities for energizing our educational program.

• Deep faculty commitment to meeting each student’s needs, teaching for learning growth

The April opening of the East Playscape and work beginning on the West Playscape—part of a comprehensive Outdoor Learning initiative—brought us closer to expanding the total campus vision into the utilization of every acre to provide rich educational opportunities for our covenant children and their families.

• Test-taking strategies implemented for optimizing student performance on standardized tests (as well as regular assessments)

Outreach to the greater Nashville community and beyond continued through student toy collection for the Fort Campbell family store. Marathon running (one mile at a time!, one dollar per mile) accumulated miles that would have taken us to Australia, and funds that would build 16 houses for families in Honduras. Above all, the truth of God’s Word continues to guide, filter, and direct all that happens on the Academy campus. As CPA Elementary School students have experienced the growth of our CPA community, our prayer has been for increased knowledge of the God who created all and an increased knowledge of how to best live and learn together. Around the Academy

CPA Middle School Every year, middle-school students experience strenuous physical, academic, and spiritual growth. This year, CPA’s middle school administration and staff could empathize! During 2011-2012, CPA Middle School saw unprecedented growth in our facilities, faculty, programs, and students. We moved into a renovated building, increased enrollment, and expanded our faculty. We implemented a new, modified-block rotating schedule, which saw remarkable success. With classes meeting four times a week, and study halls convening daily, students felt a lighter homework load. The flexible schedule enabled teacher teams to meet weekly. Department Chairs had dedicated time monthly to evaluate student performance and develop strategies to enhance every academic discipline. This collaboration led to significant student achievement as exhibited in the ERB, Explore, Duke TIP, and Foreign Language exams. Although academic achievement is a priority, CPA Middle School takes its role in the spiritual and physical growth of our students very seriously. This year, the middle school developed the structure for an advisory program, sixth- through eighth-grade wellness classes, English and math labs, foreign-language courses in all grade levels, and a bullying-prevention curriculum. We also continued our commitment to engage in service throughout the community. From collecting canned goods for Charis Ministries and coats for rural counties, to granting a wish for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, middle-school students were blessed to invest in the lives of others. CPA High School

2011-2012 was a historic year for the high school: a new building, new classrooms, new programs, a new schedule. Essentially everything about the life of a CPA High School student was new. All transitions have challenges; this transition, while an amazing blessing, was stretching but it a good way. It was not until the last night of the senior trip while sitting on the beach with the class of 2012 that I fully realized what had not changed. I posed one question for everyone to reflect on: “How did you see God work in your life while at CPA?” The next two hours was the highlight of the year. Story after story poured out about the many diverse and deeply personal ways God had revealed Himself to each student during their tenure at Christ Presbyterian Academy. I just sat in the sand thanking God. While so much had changed, the most vital aspect of our Academy had not. God was and is moving dynamically throughout our student body in ways that I could not even have dreamed possible. While many things will continue to change, grow, refine, and progress at CPA, students’ lives being “transformed by His Truth, for His Glory” will always be at the core of our mission. 2011-12 Highlights • Implemented a rotating, modified block based on students’ different times of optimum learning throughout the day, and tracked more interactive-learning activities, assessment strategies, and lab experiments due to the longer classes • Embedded intervention programs and time for intentional relationship building throughout the day (Advisory, IN Period, and Mandatorials). • Student-assistance team provided oversight to identify and provide early intervention for academically/emotionally at-risk students through a bi-monthly meeting and review with all school counselors, learning services, and the administration • Built in more time for teacher collaboration vital to teacher development, content alignment and improved student outcomes • Implemented new systems and processes for the relational growth and emotional development of students, including 51 student clubs/activities and increased counseling • Began implementation of the Olweus Bullying Program to address peer interactions that have frequently been identified as an area of focus • Completed the first full year of Rubrix, an online teacher evaluation-tracking program, creating a Professional Growth Plan for each teacher • Senior Elizabeth Poston served at KIPP for four years while at CPA and then signing up to volunteer at KIPP in Memphis while at Rhodes. • Senior Sloane Campbell, who loves horses and creative writing, worked on a novel about mustangs for two years in independent study. This year she was hired to write for the Mustang Foundation. She now attends the University of Kentucky, studying animal science. • Cade Meinel was accepted to a joint program between the College of William and Mary and St. Andrew’s in Scotland; he will spend two years at each institution and will receive a joint degree from both colleges. • A group of students traveled to Uganda over the summer of 2012 to serve in ministry to orphans there. • Mimi Sanders and Anna Wyse served at CPC’s “Special Saturdays” each week, ministering to special-needs children.

CPA Fine Arts

The 2011-2012 school year was a deepening time for fine arts. The move to new educational facilities resulted in tremendous bonuses for our students. The added renovation of the costume dock and tech dock provided by generous financial donations to the Annual Fund designated to Fine Arts made a monumental difference to students’ class and performance work alike.

The fine arts educational strategy is shaped by a strenuous academic approach combined with vibrant, hands-on artistic work. Multiple course offerings (including the new high school ballet class) were enriched with numerous guest artists. Among these were Broadway touring actor and CPA alum Graham Keen and Professor Deen Entsminger of Belmont University. On the extra-curricular front in the middle school, Art Club work was featured in the Christmas Showcase, and the Drama Club grew to expand to two days per week for 2012-13. In the high school, highlights included Tri-M’s Singing Valentine service project, NHAS’ spring lunch art review, and Thespians’ guest speaker: Broadway actress Laurel Harris, who plays the leading role of Elphaba in the touring company production of Wicked. In the performance realm, eighteen alumni returned to campus for ArtWorks, melding the musical talents of upper-class students with the experience, expertise and mentoring of alumni who have gone on to pursue performance arts. Act I, From Story to Song, focused on excerpts from musical theatre such as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and The Jungle Book. Act II, From Nashville to Memphis, featured the rock-a-billy flavor of such commercial artists as Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash, and filled the gala-styled Event Center with the soulful sounds of Otis Redding and Ray Charles. Significant new growth occurred in the high-school broadcasting program, as Broadcasting II launched the weekly CPA News broadcast and Broadcasting III/IV created the program’s first feature film, Tarrytown. Individual accolades for high-school students included one acceptance into the Stella Adler Studio Summer Acting Program; five students selected (by audition) to perform at Tennessee State Thespian Conference; and eight visual-arts students invited to a conference demonstration by The Portrait Society of America—with a CPA sophomore receiving a scholarship to the Society’s professional workshop. CPA Athletics

2011-12 Highlights

CPA Athletics was blessed both on and off the field during the 2011-12 school year. We had many teams win championships, received TSSAA State recognition for school spirit/sportsmanship, and had numerous students receive individual awards. Our three foundational documents for athletics (Statement of Purpose, Philosophy of Competition, Role of Athletics) are the standard setters each year for why we offer athletics at CPA, and our number one goal is to represent the “C” in CPA.

• Girls Soccer: Region Champion, Sectional Champion, State Finalist

State Champions: During the 2011-12 school year CPA had two teams (Girls’ & Boys’ Basketball), and more than 40 individual students win a state championship. Besides basketball, CPA also won state championships in Boys’ Tennis (Lucas Spickard), Girls’ Pole Vault (Megan Roach), Boys’ 400 Meter run (Sam Cranford), and Girls’ 4 X 800 Meter Relay (Courtney Cone, Jessica Clarke, Caroline Conley, Megan Roach).

• Cheerleading: TSSAA Girls & Boys Basketball State Champions, Girls State Tournament Sportsmanship Award Winning Squad

Historical Perspective: Christ Presbyterian Academy won thirteen different team championships during the 2011-12 school year, and this amount is tied for second most in school history (The 2009-10 school year won eighteen team championships for the most in our twenty-five years of athletics at CPA). The 2011-12 team championships include: Girls Soccer (2), Girls Basketball (4), Boys Basketball (4), Boys Tennis (3) Walking the Walk: At the end of our state-championship basketball celebration on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, our friend Rudy Kalis of WSMV-Channel 4 gave a brief, inspiring charge to the boys’ and girls’ teams—to all of us, really—and then closed in prayer. His main message was a question: “Do you walk the walk, or do you just talk the talk?” He exhorted our athletes and the entire CPA community to view the “platform” God might provide as a means to live out the gospel of Jesus Christ. Integrating Technology

Going Paperless—Into the Future Note: During 2011-12, CPA continued to focus on integrating technology. The multifaceted, multiyear initiative is designed to enhance learning through the innovative use of technology—via iPad use, Promethean boards, online tools, and more. For one snapshot into what this looks like at ground level, we invited Jeremy White, a CPA science teacher, to describe his classroom’s approach. It has been said, and I tend to agree, that the best way to teach someone something is by example and not simply by words. The adage, “Do as I say, not as I do,” simply finds no weight amongst a very intuitive and smart student body. So as an Ecology teacher—attempting with all of my might to explain to them the great need to take care of our planet, and that they have a personal responsibility in that endeavor—I found myself conflicted with my words and actions. This, coupled with the fact that, like it or not, technology is here to stay in the classroom, sent me down a path of revamping my classroom to include technology and stop the paper trail before I had to throw it into the garbage. My class is set up as a completely paperless class. As of this 2011-12, even my textbooks are offered online. Every bit of information that my students need, including syllabi, guidelines, example papers, and study guides, are posted neatly and globally obtainable on my

Moodle page. As long as a student has Internet and computer access, there is no excuse for them to say that they did not know what was due, or did not get the document. In fact, they do not even miss the notes if they are absent, as each lecture material is on Moodle in the form of a flipchart (a new and better concept compared with PowerPoint), and in the form of a Livescribe (which has my voice attached to the notes as I write and talk). However, the online flow of information goes in both directions. Not only am I sending my students information via an online forum, but also my students turn every assignment in via Moodle. From papers and study guides, to research projects and even tests, every assignment is sent online, filtered though an anti-plagiarism program, graded, and returned to the student with notes and feedback. All of this is completed without one piece of paper wasted, safe and secured, backed up online, and accessible to the student and the parents. My students, once acquainted with the concept, love the platform, and I have seen their ability to learn and interact with the subject increase immensely. In the end, my class equips them with the future of technology, and at the same time we all get to practice a little bit of what I try so desperately to preach. Jeremy White Science Teacher

Equipping Student Researchers Books and Beyond CPA’s three library/media centers—located in the Elementary-, Middle-, and High School buildings—serve as vital hubs of information for all of our students. The centers not only provide resources for students to help them learn today, but also equip them as researchers for the future.

Elevating Wellness FITNESS: A Class for Life “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19) Paul tells us that Christ commands us to honor our body. Scripture tells us that we are certain to encounter difficulties when we follow Him, and our bodies must be prepared to withstand the pressures that will come from the outside and from within. In 2011-12, CPA added a fitness curriculum for grades 6-12. This program complemented the Academy’s elementary-school fitness classes by ensuring that every student, K-12, was involved in directed fitness education in addition to participation in extracurricular sports. Beginning with the Class of 2015, one fitness credit is required for graduation. The course provides each student with a physical-training program that addresses the needs and enhances the capabilities of the individual. Concepts include resistance training for strength and power, flexibility, balance, speed development, agilities, core strengthening, aerobic conditioning, and nutrition. Each student actively participates in a specialized program that is designed for the lifestyle and/or athletic demands of the individual. The goal is to equip the body for God’s purpose, as it relates to each student. High-school students participate in one of two fitness programs: Physical Fitness or Performance Fitness. Physical Fitness programs include a range of modalities to enhance the overall health of the student and to achieve an optimal level of physical conditioning. Performance Fitness programs include additional methods to increase explosive force production and reduce the risk of injury in competitive sports. The program design is specific to each student’s interests, needs, and capabilities. New students will begin learning fundamental movement patterns and industry definitions, while experienced students will progress to more functional movements with advanced concepts. All students will receive technique instruction, and the modes of intensity, volume, duration, and frequency will be uniquely dependent on the student’s skills.

Based on the individual student’s needs, capabilities, and personal endeavors, students will experience most, if not all, of the following: • Olympic lifting for power (force production for explosive sports) • Resistance training for strength (relative and absolute) • Plyometrics (force production and body control) • Speed Development (proper running mechanics) • Flexibility (injury prevention and performance) • Core development (the critical link for human performance) • Agilities (quickness and change of direction) • Contemporary Health & Fitness (Pilates, Yoga, CrossFit, Aerobics) • Nutrition (hydration, caloric distribution, weight loss/gain, healthy choices) The students will also: • Learn terminology commonly used in fitness and sports performance • Acquire an understanding of nutrition concepts and how to apply them to address the specific physiological needs of the individual • Learn to perform movements necessary to improve physical performance • Teach injury-preventative strategies by addressing individuals’ weaknesses • Develop lifestyle-health patterns through core strengthening and flexibility • Implement strategies designed to optimize the potential of the individual by bridging the gap between human potential and human performance Middle-school students receive instruction in physical fitness and lifestyle choices. The curriculum in grades 6-8 is a training ground for the high school program. While physical performance and overall health are certain to improve as a result of Fitness class, students learn and understand the significance of implementing a long-term fitness regimen as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Learning Outside During the 2011-12 school year, CPA completed and opened a new East Playscape as part of a larger Outdoor Learning initiative. In the late spring of 2012, elementary students began exploring the learning and play opportunities on the playscape. The Academy’s desire is for each of our students to richly grow cognitively, socially, physically, and spiritually because of the opportunities of imaginative, explorative play offered in the outdoor learning space. A West Playscape is slated for completion during the 2012-13 school year. Anne K. Purdy, Elementary School Principal, noted, “The dreams for the outdoor-learning areas on our campus began in my own experiences of what our God has taught me about Himself through His creation and the belief that our Creator calls us to learn about, care for, and have dominion over all that He has made. “The vision has been fueled by research in child development highlighting the many benefits of outdoor learning and imaginative play opportunities—including

heightened test scores and decreased bullying…benefits not to be ignored. He has given each of us imaginative, creative capabilities best developed through explorative play. Learning about all He has made while expanding imaginative play and investigative opportunities can help our children be best equipped for pursuing all He has planned for each one. “My prayer for all of our learning on this campus is that we grow daily in knowing as we are fully known. ‘God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.’ (Martin Luther) May the wonder of that truth increase in us all.” We are so thankful for this new way to learn about God!

Savoring New Spaces At the beginning of the 2011-12 school year, Christ Presbyterian Academy dedicated a new High School building and celebrated the renovation of the Middle and Elementary School buildings as well. Made possible by God’s mighty hand of provision through generous contributions to the Academy’s Believe Capital Campaign,

the new, 85,000-square-foot high school and updated MS and ES facilities represented an exciting chapter in CPA’s rich history. With much prayer and gratitude, all of us at the Academy appreciate the tremendous positive difference these additions and refurbishments have made for student learning and enrichment at CPA.

Baccalaureate & Commencement Baccalaureate On Sunday, May 20, students, families and faculty/staff members gathered in the Sanctuary of CPC for Baccalaureate. Highlights included a stirring charge given by keynote speaker Deanne Carroll, a longtime CPA English teacher who retired at the end of 2011-12. The senior class chose juniors Lydia Granered and Jack Hooper to speak as well, and they delivered talks filled with inspiring, humorous memories of the Class of 2012.

In Honor of A Very Special Lady By Richard B. Anderson, Headmaster In the fall of 1963, a red-headed eighth-grader walked into the homeroom class of Miss Deanne Sumner at John Overton High School. Our paths have crossed many times since. Three years later, I walked into the 11th-grade English class of Mrs. William Timothy Carroll, Jr. CPA opened its doors in September of 1985. Tim and Deanne were among our first parents (bringing second-grader Katie). Five years later, Deanne was the fifth-grade teacher of the Andersons’ oldest daughter at CPA. We later moved Deanne to where she really belonged…to high school English. She remains what she was in 1963: an excellent instructor…a teacher with high standards…a marvelous combination of tough and tender. She has been a mentor to me—made a writer out of me—as she has for scores of students in both English and Journalism over the years. Soli Deo Gloria. Commencement On Sunday, May 27, CPA saw its 21st graduating class cross the stage at the front of Christ Presbyterian Church. These 86 young men and women increased the number of total graduates to 1,170. Highlights of the afternoon included a valedictory address by Ashley Zegiestowsky; a salutatory address by Jim Clarke; presentation of the senior gift (a staircase from near the back of the Varsity Gym up the hill to the HS parking lot) by Jared Reinfeldt; special music by dads-of-CPA-seniors Nathan Burbank and David Toledo; the presentation of senior awards to Mimi Sanders (Service award), Patrick Eytchison (Distinguished award) and Jim Clarke (Soli Deo Gloria award); the traditional blessings and Scriptures spoken over each graduate by Richard B. Anderson; and a choral benediction by the senior members of Vision, who sang our alma mater, “Soli Deo Gloria”. The theme Bible verse for the Class of 2012 summarized its members’ aspirations as they left the Academy for new adventures: “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” I Peter 4:8-10

Historic Appointment Patrick Eytchison, Recipient of Two Prestigious Appointments, Enters U.S. Naval Academy Following in His Family’s Distinguished Military Footsteps, He Becomes CPA’s First USNA Appointee Among the many accolades for members of CPA’s Class of 2012, Patrick Colgan Eytchison, who received the Distinguished Senior Award at Commencement, accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. His was one of only 1,200 appointments from among 16,000 applicants in 2012. Patrick also received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He chose the Navy based on strong family connections. Patrick is the first CPA student to receive an appointment to the USNA. CPA has had one graduate earn and accept an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy (George Gibson, in 2005), and three students attend West Point (Rankin Clinton, Marcus Gill and Tye Sanders, a 2012 graduate of West Point). Eytchison invoked history in reflecting on his appointment, saying: “Teddy Roosevelt once emphasized the necessity for Americans to ‘dare mighty things,’ to not ‘shrink from hard contests,’ so that our nation might not fall into ‘slothful ease’ and allow ‘bolder, stronger peoples to pass us by.’ I am thrilled to have the opportunity to attend the naval academy, which will help me develop the leadership skills required to ‘dare mighty things’ for God and country. I am honored to have the chance to carry on a family tradition of military service.” U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, a CPA alumni parent, had nominated Patrick for Annapolis, and Senator Lamar Alexander had nominated him for West Point. Commander John Ohlinger (U.S. Navy, retired) visited CPA to help honor Patrick during CPA’s Academic Awards Convocation on May 9, 2012. Patrick visited Annapolis in March, accompanied by his grandfather, retired Vice Admiral Ronald M. Eytchison, who served in the Navy for more than 30 years, and his father, Brian, who was raised as a Navy junior. Patrick’s grandfather graduated from USNA in 1958, and his uncle, Gregory Eytchison, graduated from USNA in 1990. Greg has served in the Navy and then the Naval Reserves, including a yearlong stint in Afghanistan through January 2011. Patrick was inducted as a Plebe at the naval academy on June 28.

“Naval Service is a family tradition, as is military service,” said Patrick’s mom, Amy. “My father, Robert Colgan, served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in WWII, including a stint in Okinawa. My parents met at a USO dance at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.” Headmaster Richard B. Anderson noted that Patrick’s appointment to Annapolis means that CPA has now placed graduates in all of the military-service academies. “We are certainly very proud of Patrick for pursuing his dream,” Anderson said, “and we have no doubt that he will approach this next four years with the same passion, the same diligence, the same excellence with which he engaged his endeavors at CPA. We can all sleep better at night knowing that the future of our country is in the hands of young men like Patrick Eytchison. Soli Deo Gloria.” During his high-school years, Patrick was a co-captain and starting lineman on the state-semifinal CPA Lions football team; a member of the National Honor Society, International Thespian Society, and Tri-M Music Honorary; a three-year member of the advancedvocal ensemble Vision; and a leading actor in the fall plays and spring musicals his junior and senior years. He performed as Duke Orsino in Twelfth Night on the main stage of the Tennessee Thespian Festival in Memphis in 2011, and as Darry in The Outsiders at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Atlanta in 2011. Eytchison also has played roles in 11 productions of the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department’s Star Bright Players, including Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. The entire CPA community congratulates Patrick, and all of our Class of 2012 graduates, and we look forward to all that the Lord has in store for them as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
