Director’s Notes The play you are about to see was written by John Patrick (1905-1995). Louisville born, he was abandoned by his parents, and spent a delinquent youth in foster homes until securing a job as a radio announcer in San Francisco at the age of 19. His talent informed thousands of radio scripts, won him the Pulitzer Prize for drama (Teahouse of the August Moon), and led to a long career as a Hollywood screenwriter with classic hits such as Three Coins in a Fountain, Love is a Many Splendored Thing and The Philadelphia Story. It was 1950 when The Curious Savage opened on Broadway. I am convinced that the short run of this scintillating work was due to the playing of comedic rhythms rather than the heart that lies beneath. The cleverness and truth of the lines never ceases to catch me off guard with laughter and sighs of realization.
“Fight the night!” “If I wait until I’m comfortable my conscience won’t needle me.” “Don’t be betrayed by the illusion of contentment.” “Your worth is inestimable.” At its crux, The Curious Savage is about brokenness—brokenness that lies beneath the powerful and shiny; brokenness in relationships, motives and methods; brokenness in the circumstances of human life. I love that because that means it is about us. But I love it more because it is also about hope. If you watch the spaces between and under the lines, it’s there: the ever-present offered hope of understanding, growth, change. This is a play that exemplifies art that entertains the soul but also speaks to it. Meet Theatre III/IV Mary Eveleen Brown (Mrs. Paddy) Sophomore—A guest performer with Theatre III/IV, outside productions at Bravo include Alice in Wonderland, Annie, and The Wizard of Oz. Middle-school performances have included Seussical, Tom Sawyer, The Music Man, The Secret Garden, and Beauty and the Beast (Mrs. Potts). In January, she will play the role of Pilar in Act II’s Legally Blonde. Caleb Dyson (Samuel Savage) Sophomore—Performances from middle school included Tom Sawyer, The Wizard of Oz, The Music Man (Marcellus Washburn), The Secret Garden (Collin), and Beauty and the Beast (Beast). High-school performances include Fiddler on the Roof (Boy), and Carousel (Beauties Barker/Policeman/ Ensemble); this is his first role in a main-stage high-school play. Molly Ellson (Fairy May) Senior—Past productions include Seussical (Gertrude), and The Wizard of Oz (Wicked Witch). In high school, she has been involved in The Importance of Being Earnest (Cecily), Fiddler on the Roof (Shprintze), and You Can’t Take it With You (Rheba). Lydia Granered (Mrs. Savage) Senior—Performances since middle school have included Smokey Joe’s Cafe, The Jungle Book and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown (Act Too Players), Seussical (CPA), and The Wizard of Oz (CPA). High-school appearances include The Importance of Being Earnest (Lady Bracknell), Fiddler on the Roof (Yente), You Can’t Take It With You (Essie), and Carousel (Nettie Fowler). This past summer, Lydia studied sketch and improv comedy at The Second City in Chicago. Abby Newman (Miss Willie) Senior—Out of school performances have included Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Millie), The Sound of Music (Baroness Elsa Schrader), and Once Upon a Mattress (Queen Aggravain). CPA stage roles have included Fiddler on the Roof (Ensemble), You Can’t Take It With You (Miss Henderson/Gay Wellington/Grand Duchess Olga Katrina), and Carousel (Mrs. Mullins).
Girault Seger (Jeff) Senior—Girault debuted with CPA Fine Arts in the middle-school production of Seussical (Mr. Mayor). High-school performances include Hello, Dolly!, Peter Pan (Pirate), Fiddler on the Roof (Avram), The Outsiders (Bob), You Can’t Take It With You (Mr. Kirby), and Carousel (Mr. Bascombe/ Ensemble). This past summer, Girault studied acting at The Stella Adler Conservatory in NYC. Alyssa Shofner (Dr. Emmett) Senior—Alyssa has been seen in The Doctor In Spite of Himself (Jacqueline), The Importance of Being Earnest (Miss Prism), and You Can’t Take It With You (Mrs. DePenna). Production work has included Fiddler on the Roof (Light Board Operator) and Carousel (Sound Tech). Hope Thomas (Florence) Senior—Production-staff credits include Tarrytown (Hair and Make-up), You Can’t Take It With You (Costumes), and Carousel (Props Manager/Deck Crew Chief). This is Hope’s first role on the CPA stage. Camille Thompson (Lily Belle) Junior—Middle-school performances include Seussical, The Music Man, and The Secret Garden (Mary). Last year she was seen in Actfest and Carousel (featured dancer). Emily Wallin (Stage Manager/Assistant Director) Senior— Beginning in arts performances last year, Emily served on the production staff of Carousel as an Assistant Director and as the Hair & Make-Up Manager. He is a member of the prestigious USNA Glee Club and will be touring Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; in the spring he will play the role of the Constable in the musical Fiddler on the Roof. Gabrielle Toledo ’12…heads to Elon University in January to pursue a BA in theatre and a minor in dance. Jared Reinfeldt ’12…is a psychology (pre-med) major at Boston College University with various roles in its fall production of The Arabian Nights. Georganna Greene ’11…is in the Visual Arts Education program at UT-Knoxville. Anna Lee McFadden ’11…is in her second year of theatre study at Western Kentucky University and is working with faculty in the area of dramaturgy for the department. Esteban Pedraza ’09…is an international, award-winning filmmaker with his short film People I Know and winner of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation Faith Shorts Competition 2010. He attends NYU film school in the heart of Manhattan. “The creation of art is innately spiritual. It asks the question, ‘What am I?,’ and attempts to answer it at the same time.” Grace Steinbrecher ’09…is a senior in the technical theatre program at Kent State University in Ohio, preparing to do master’s work in Drama Therapy. Hans Nelson ’01…is a keyboard musician busy with tours and events. Recently he was the rehearsal pianist for the musical Chicago, produced by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and installed on the largest cruise ship in the world. He was seen last month in Studio Tenn’s Twelve Angry Men (Juror #8); and you can catch him in various episodes of ABC’s primetime drama Nashville (Steve). David Kiern ’00…is a busy filmmaker based in Nashville with his own company.
