In the second instalment of top tips for retailers to keep in mind when working with manufacturers, Lorna Fellowes, Managing Director at Triton Showers, draws on her expertise in the showering industry to suggest how best to take advantage of the support and service a big brand has to offer.

part 2 growing your shower business Stay ahead. Working closely with a large brand like Triton which is at the forefront of product development and technical expertise will ensure that your product offering is always at its best. Going digital. Triton's iPhone app.

Hand held technology. Triton has developed a free to download iPhone application to provide 24/7 access to fitting diagrams as well as at a glance top tips.

Manufacturer training. There is always more to learn so take advantage of the training offered by manufacturers. Even though you may not actually install the showers yourself, understanding the latest technical details and product USPs will help you to sell the product more effectively. Specification services. Triton knows how important product support is for retailers and has developed a dedicated “help me specify” section on the website as well as a specification services hotline for technical questions. 2 • BATHROOM JOURNAL JUNE 2012

Showroom essentials. If you can’t have every product set up on a tiled wall, use manufacturer supplied lifestyle photography online or in brochures to inspire customers to transform their bathroom or ensuite. POS. Displays are great for inspiring customers but point of sale material can be useful too. Manufacturers usually offer a good choice (some of it free) that can be used to help to point people in the right direction. Literature. Brochures etc allow you to sell products off the page as well as in the showroom; Keep in contact with your sales rep to make sure you have the latest literature available for customers to take home. Speedy delivery. You need to rely on the manufacturer to deliver products that ensure a quick installation. Bestselling products with easy fit features such as the Triton T80Z Fast-Fit are always good to keep in stock. Accessories. For additional sales opportunities look for a manufacturer that offers a range of accessories to match shower products. Triton has a range of taps and accessories specifically designed to match its mixer shower products. The first part of Lorna’s tips and advice for retailers was in the April issue. Saint-Gobain Weber has introduced weber.joint pro to its range of tile preparation, fixing and finishing products. This water repellent flexible tile grout has Mould Stop Technology and is designed for grouting joints up to 10mm between floor and wall tiles. It is flexible enough to use with substrates where some movement or vibration is expected and is especially recommended for wooden floors or floors with underfloor or under tile heating. It comes in 11 colours including Jasmine, Ivory, Silver Grey, Charcoal and Black in 5kg bags. 0870 333 0070 www.netweber.co.uk

The Verso Eco tap from Inta limits the release of hot water - cutting running costs. When the handle is in the central position the mixer supplies cold only rather than the usual mix of hot and cold. With many taps around a minute elapses between opening the tap and the water running hot, supplying around six litres of unwanted water every time. Verso avoids this because the user has to push the handle further for hot water so it is not unnecessarily supplied to the valve. 01889 272180 www.intatec.co.uk

T

here is out there an enormous market for accessible bathing products - and not just Doc M hospital style stuff. As Mike Holborn of Eurocare says, the difference in a real home is that a whole family of varying abilities may be using the bathroom and want products to look good as well as being practical and accessible. The problem for retailers looking to profit from this valuable and growing market has been finding the product and getting it installed - which is where Eurocare comes in. The Doncaster based company can now provide retailers with the opportunity to become involved in the fast growing elderly market, without the hassle. Products are designed and manufactured at the company’s new premises, recently opened by Hugh Forde, MD of Age UK Trading. The provision of accessible bathing products has been historically daunting for retailers, who often perceive it as a specialist area. In reality. only a small percentage of the domestic retail market requires a specialist bathing solution, the majority come from the over 65s - a group that is growing year on year as the average lifespan in the UK continues to increase. Eurocare MD Mike Holborn says that there has been a boom in the retail market for accessible products: “Our move to larger premises supports our continuing growth and need for more space to accommodate our manufacturing capabilities to meet demand. It was a privilege to be joined by Hugh and all our guests for the factory opening celebrations. We are immensely proud of our achievement and to be manufacturing our products here in the UK.”

the move Current trends indicate that when it comes to accessible bathing, consumers look for a supplier who can provide a complete service from design to installation. Installation can be notoriously difficult, and is an area many retailers wish to avoid. Eurocare takes the problem away, dealing with the job from start to finish - including removal of any rubbish. The company has launched a brand new initiative that allows retailers the opportunity to offer a complete turnkey solution. Those in the scheme are provided with a full menu of ‘installed prices’. Although prices are subject to survey which is a must when installing accessible equipment retailers will be able to provide customers with a realistic idea of cost. As well as excellent service, retailers can also be confident that all Eurocare approved contractors are CRB checked and all work and products are fully guaranteed. For those retailers who have installation capacity but are new to accessible bathing, Eurocare also offer a range of training options, from sales and technical training, to full product installation courses. Eurocare offers the widest selection of accessible door, screen and enclosure options in the UK, all manufactured to each customer’s requirements. The company also boasts a collection of walk-in baths, which set new standards in excellence and ease of use. Looking further ahead, the company plans to create an additional area for in house product and installation training. All Eurocare products are manufactured in the UK to the highest standards. its reputation for launching enticing new products and this year is no exception with avant-garde door colours and finishes, stunning new handle options, basins, ceramics and the most extensive collection of worktops to date. In tune with fashion, natural tones and finishes are becoming a ‘staple wardrobe’ item whilst splashes of vibrant colours and textures work as accent pieces that create the individual look. With this in mind, Mereway Bathrooms has introduced three vibrant new textured finishes; Zebra, Snake and Crocodile that will take anyone’s breath away! “Mixing and matching of colour and texture has become as popular in bathrooms as it is in kitchens. We are also seeing further diversification in colour palettes for furniture coming into the market, with even more unusual designs that are a bit off-the-wall, like our exciting new animal print’ Vogue’ door finishes,” says Tim Wood. Building on the success of popular J pull door style ‘Segreto’ for Mereway Kitchens, Segreto has now joined the Bathrooms portfolio too bringing a sleek handleless feel to a new part of the home. CHAMPIONING THE BRAND A perfume is just a perfume, right? Everyone has their favourite perfume. When in the bottle it could be anyone’s, but once someone wears it, it becomes individually theirs, they become themselves, feeling incomplete when not wearing it. A perfume magically lifts spirits and stirs emotions. This new ethos behind the Mereway Bathrooms brand is the next chapter in Mereways’ intriguing ‘Live Life The Mereway’ philosophy.

Jane is a carefully selected successful business owner who is passionate about her products, and her beautiful hand made soaps are filled with fragrances that stir people’s senses. Mereway have chosen talented people who they can work with, who in their own specialty field ‘Live Life The Mereway’.

less ordinary interesting shapes continue to emerge, and bathroom elements become more varied, the collection of new ‘Lustre’ cultured marble worktops add real individuality. Available in 14 luxurious finishes with integral moulded basins and tops for fitted runs or vanity stations these new surfaces can be cut and finished to order for a streamlined and elegant look. To complement the modular units a new radius edge mirror has been introduced to join the selection of universal, illuminated mirrors and mirror cabinets in three popular sizes. New soft glow light lighting features have also been included to create a relaxing mood in the bathroom. This is just a taster of the new products introduced this season. The Bathrooms collection now includes 33 beautiful door finishes, 20 handle options and an extensive number of luxury components, design features and storage solutions that cater for both the traditional and contemporary ends of the market. There truly is something for every individual taste and budget within the range. 0800 028 4466 www.merewaybathrooms.co.uk

Each of the Mereway ranges is being positioned within the consumer marketplace to appeal to distinct groups – each having a ‘brand champion’ that personifies the design characteristics of the collection, as well as sharing Mereway brand values. For Mereway Bathrooms the collection will be promoted by Jane Maddern, owner of Jane Maddern Soaps; a unique hand made natural soap company.

“We have already created a series of scenarios for each Mereway kitchen collection to illustrate the Life Live The Mereway philosophy that represents our brands,” Tim Wood explains. “It seemed a natural decision to implement this philosophy for Mereway Bathrooms to create a synergy between the two divisions. As many of our retailers take kitchen as well as bathrooms product from us, it’s an ideal formula. A bathroom space is very individual to each person and much thought goes into the buying process. What we love about introducing our brand ambassador is that Jane also caters for individuality with a soap and scent for all moods and personal tastes. All her products are carefully hand made; using the best quality ingredients and her attention to detail is a true reflection of what we’re all about.”

Exciting combinations of bright doors and contrasting cabinets make a real unique statement. These vibrant new finishes are also available in bath panels for a real wow factor.

20-21 TOP O MARKET

2:56 pm

THE EXPERT VIEW David Osborne, MD at Roman has experience right across the market but sees a distinctive trend at the upper end: “At the luxury end of the market, there is a clear trend towards totally frameless shower enclosures made from 10mm glass. We are seeing products where the profiles are completely stripped away and the glass is bonded to glass with just minimalist brackets for support. When it comes to the wall profiles, these are either only a few millimetres wide or are disguised by being channelled into the wall and hidden so that the glass appears to float. This gives a totally minimalist finish with a feeling of opening up the space. “We are also seeing walk ins and wetrooms becoming increasingly popular but there has also been a marked increase in the combination of walk ins or wetroom panels being installed with shower trays, rather than straight to the floor in a true wetroom setting. This offers all the benefits of a wetroom with a more straightforward installation process. “The look at the higher end of the market is very much towards sleek, modern products. If you are at this end of the market it is vital to offer a design and installation service. The design service must be teamed with good, knowledgeable advice that meets the needs of the customer, along with the right choice of products. “The role of the bathroom has moved on from being a purely functional room to become a retreat from busy modern life. As consumers experience luxury hotel bathrooms they want to recreate the same thing in their own homes so more indulgent products such as wetrooms and drencher head showers are on the agenda.”

Large freestanding organically shaped baths, intelligent lighting, clutter free walk in wetrooms, marble, real and engineered stone and timeless luxury are key trends at the discerning end of the bathroom market.

The Kaldewei Comfort Select panel integrates virtually flush into the rim of the bath and allows precise setting of the temperature even before running the water. Whether at the default 38.5°C, warmer or cooler, the bath fills from the very first second with water of a consistently even temperature which can be easily adjusted in increments of 0.5°C at any time with the touch of a finger. For safety reasons, the maximum temperature is set to 43°C, but can be increased up to 50°C by pressing a special button combination. The operating panel of the Kaldewei Comfort Select also regulates the flow of water into and out of the bath. The drain cover opens and closes with a gentle touch of the function symbols on the operating panel. The bath can be filled in two ways: via a standard, external bath tap or using the special Kaldewei Comfort Select drain and overflow fitting with filler function. As a further optional function, the Kaldewei Comfort Select operating panel electronically controls the shower using the Kaldewei Comfort Select shower hose. The hose can be fitted with any shower head to match the overall design and either be sunk into the bath rim or fitted to the outside as a highly elegant feature for freestanding baths. The concealed shower hose also scores technical points in that the hose duct with drip facility ensures optimal drainage of residual water. 0800 840 9770 www.kaldewei.com

From the overall design to the shape of the back rests, the smoothness and quality of the enamel finish and the spaciousness and rigidity of the shower trays and baths, everything is designed to create the ultimate bathroom experience. Bette baths, shower areas and washbasins are made in steel/enamel. The strength and stability of steel means that Bette can produce shower trays and washbasins in very large sizes. This stability also makes the material perfect for baths and shower baths. Steel allows the precise formation of shapes and edges so Bette shower baths have steep sides at the foot end for more standing room. Steel is also a good conductor of heat so will take on the warmth of the bathroom and will not feel cold. All Bette products are finished with the company’s Betteglaze® enamel which is extremely smooth, durable and will not lose its colour - even after years of use and cleaning. The surface is hygienic and easy to clean and no special care is needed. The enamel and steel are fired in a kiln and bond together to make an exceptionally strong material. 21st century he High fuel costs mean that reducing energy use is a major focus in any heating installation. Vasco is responding to market demand for leaner, greener products by marketing sustainable radiators made from aluminium that deliver impressive heat efficiency and energy savings.

N

ow back in the hands of its founder Jos Vaessen after a period of ownership by Masco, Vasco is again concentrating on its key skill of combining innovative design with energy saving performance. “We are focusing on aluminium,” says Dave Thornback, UK MD of The Heating Company. “The heat transfer is far better than steel - and we use recycled material. We actually recycle it ourselves so these radiators tick all the boxes for being green. Aluminium gives twice the heat transfer of steel - for example a vertical 1800/500 steel radiator would give out 3800btu but in aluminium the figure would be 7500btu. Water saving is an added attraction as an aluminium radiator uses just a fifth of the amount of water needed by a steel radiator. This in turn brings savings in energy costs, as the boiler does not have to work as hard. Warm up is

much quicker too, and the combination of convected and radiated heat means that consumers can lower the thermostat setting while remaining comfortable.” Vasco aluminium radiators are lightweight and easy to install and have an automatic air vent. Their optimum heat output means that they can be used with low temperature systems such as heat pumps. Aluminium also provides safe heat the front of the radiator never gets too hot because the hot water flows in the core section of the unit. When conventional radiators heat up they make an irritating ticking noise as the metal expands. The new technology from Vasco eliminates this problem as it incorporates profiles that allow for movement so there is no noise. Murmuring is also eliminated thanks to a valve that quickly removes gases and air from the

If you have been sent a Tre Mercati duck the company would like to know about its travels. The best duck travel pic will be entered into a competition to win an iPad. The closing date is 28th September and hi-res entries should be sent to davetheduck@tremercati.co.uk
