’s choice Stuart Turner has introduced an on line module which enables merchant staff to learn about aspects of waste water removal. The company recently launched the Wasteflo range of macerators and a lifting station and the module covers all of the products in this range. There is also information on the installation process, product maintenance and key points. The module is available through the Training Academies of all the major merchant groups and independents can access it though the NMBS Academy. It can also be provided on CD – call 01491 572655 for your copy or request via the website at www.stuart-turner.co.uk
Flo-mate pumps from Stuart Turner are a simple way to boost incoming mains water without the need for a break tank. As many residents of older mansion blocks in London know only too well, getting a decent flow at peak times can be very difficult. At times when mains pressure is insufficient, Flo-mate will deliver a minimum 1.5 bar at 12 litres a minute, meeting the needs of most unvented boilers. Flo-mate has a built in bypass so when mains pressure exceeds 1.5 bar, performance is not restricted and will enter the system. The pump starts automatically when a flow rate of one litre per minute or more exists and it has been designed in accordance with UK water regulations. Flo-mate will be showcased at this year’s PHEX events but you can also find out more at www.stuart-turner.co.uk. It comes with a two-year guarantee and is supported by Pump Assist, Stuart Turner’s team of technical experts 01491 572655 www.stuart-turner.co.uk
The groundbreaking BF850 SilentMAX diamond blade from Marcrist reduces the danger of excessive noise when blades are used on hand held machines. It is the only blade currently on the market that complies with UK noise regulations and gives superior cutting performance. The blade has been independently tested by a leading EU Health and Safety organisation and it has been shown that the BF850 SilentMAX gives up to 16x noise reduction in the range of diameters from 115 to 400mm. The blade cuts quickly and precisely and ensures that operators are less exposed to noise that could damage hearing. The blade also offers a low cost per cut and comes with a 30-day no quibble guarantee. 01302 890888 www.marcrist.co.uk

when the going T
here’s no doubt about it: times are tough in the bathroom industry which has been hit by a triple whammy of recession, a slow down in home building and a shortage of mortgage funds that prevents consumers from moving and improving. The recent announcement that AW Andes is ceasing its distribution operation to retail highlights the difficulties in trading conditions. “Distribution is a specialist arena,” says Ideal Bathrooms’ Commercial Director Danielle Lillis. “That’s why Ideal Bathrooms concentrates solely on this sector. We supply retailers and merchants in the traditional route to market and our success is down to exceptionally high levels of customer service coupled with marketing initiatives to help customers maximise market potential. We do not sell on the internet but use modern communication channels to promote sales and direct potential buyers to our customers’ outlets.” This exceptional service includes next day deliveries to 99 percent of the country including outlying areas, a huge £6 million plus stockholding of over 15,000 different product lines, a commitment to big brands, keen prices, a delivery fleet of over 50 vehicles and an enthusiastic and knowledgeable sales office and field sales teams. The “An Ideal World” year-long promotion has also been very popular with customers, with monthly VIP prizes sponsored by key suppliers and instant win scratch cards. VIP prizes include attendance at some fantastic sporting events and imaginative, luxury holiday

weekends to destinations across the world. The latest VIP prize winners in the “An Ideal World” promotion are Michael Fuller of Gibbs and Dandy, Slough, who is now looking forward to a trip to the famous Oktoberfest in Munich sponsored by Grohe, and Kal Patel of Aqualite Trading, Wembley who won a luxury weekend in Paris courtesy of Saniflo. A key feature of the campaign is to raise £20,000 for the groups’ 2012 charity – Barnardo’s – with 25p donated by Ideal Bathrooms for every delivery made of each month’s sponsor’s products, together with proceeds from a host of other charity activities organised by Ideal Bathrooms’ staff. Another innovation to assist retailers is the Ideal Bathrooms premium brand strategy. “The premium brand strategy is not confined to specialist top showrooms either,” says Ideal Bathrooms’ Retail Sales Director Richard Taylor. “Showrooms with a mid-market customer base are also adding luxury displays to attract new business potential as more people are improving their homes, so working with our key brands we are also broadening the market for them through this strategy. Similarly mid to upper market brands are also experiencing sale growth into the luxury sector as an add-on to sales through existing showrooms. The strategy is helping many of our existing suppliers penetrate into new market sectors.” 0800 634 2600 www.idealbathrooms.com

In a major new amalgamation, Ideal Bathrooms has secured an exclusive distributorship for Showerlux branded products in the UK. Although the UK operating company has closed down, the brand will now continue to be available in the UK through Ideal Bathrooms. “Following the unfortunate closure of the Showerlux UK operation, we entered into negotiations with Duscholux who manufactured almost all Showerlux’s products that were sold in the UK,” says Ideal Bathrooms’ Commercial Director Danielle Lillis. “In effect Ideal Bathrooms will now perform a similar operation importing from the manufacturer to supply merchants and retailers. This reflects the current trend for global sourcing – a key feature of Ideal Bathrooms 2012 “An Ideal World” campaign.” A major element in the exclusive distribution agreement will be a comprehensive review of price points and customer discounts which will be completely realigned to be fully competitive for the marketplace and to offer improved margins for retailers. The range will focus solely on shower enclosures and will continue to offer high quality and great design. It will now benefit from Ideal Bathrooms’ renowned customer service including next day deliveries which are available on all Ideal Bathrooms’ 15,000 plus stock product lines.
Showerlux products will now be available exclusively from Ideal Bathrooms and will be supplied by Duscholux.
“I am delighted that Ideal Bathrooms is able to keep the Showerlux name alive and to have the opportunity to develop it back to its former glory as a big brand again,” adds Danielle. “The enclosure arrangements fit perfectly with our existing product portfolio and particularly with our strategy to grow the showering section of our business. The Showerlux brand is in safe hands for now and the future.”

Contemporary brassware is still the current favourite in UK bathrooms – and many designs work well with both modern and traditional sanitaryware. Shown on our front cover, the innovative Verso range from Inta features energy saving technology, making efficient use of hot water simple by forcing users to consciously push further for an increased flow rate and hotter water. The Verso basin mixer has already proven popular, thanks to its sleek design and impressive green credentials. The control handle gives the option of a reduced flow rate, requiring users to lift past the first click for full flow operation, with a maximum flow rate of five litres per minute. Users are also able to set a maximum temperature for the tap by altering the position of the cartridge stop ring, allowing for ultimate control over water and energy savings, ideal for both domestic and commercial settings. 01889 272180 www.intatec.co.uk

New for 2012, Krome shower accessories from Deva include this three-mode shower kit. The head has an air option, which mixes air and water to deliver an invigorating but water saving shower. Also available within the range is a 200mm fixed showerhead with a swivel joint and full chrome face plate with rub clean nozzles. Deva has launched a new 154-page brochure to show its new products. Ideal Standard has a long pedigree of working with leading European designers to create exciting new brassware designs. Great products from the past include Academy, Silver and many more. The company can also claim credit for the single lever tap, being the first to introduce ceramic disc valves to the UK and also the first to develop a multi port cartridge that overcame the problems caused by UK unbalanced supply. Current product innovations include Blue Technology that saves water, energy and money, nickel free IdealPure, Topfix installation for basin and bidet fittings, Cool Body technology, eco click cartridges and more. 01482 346461 www.ideal-standard.co.uk
Wall mounted electronic mixers show just how closely linked exclusive design, functionality and technological expertise are at Axor. “We have developed an intelligent solution that combines sensor technology and our wall mixers’ exclusive design,” commented Axor product manager Stefanie Pfaff. The new electronic wall mixers are part of the Axor Citterio and Axor Uno2 collections. Electronic wall mixers in the two collections offer different design languages: in Axor Citterio we see shiny surfaces and precise, linear contours and in Axor Uno2 we see a minimalist, slimline design. Both have two spout lengths. These ingenious mixers have sensor windows integrated into the underside of the spout. They cannot be seen by the user and do not impair the mixer’s visual appeal. At the same time, this is an extremely functional position for the sensor, which can be intuitively operated - the sensor is automatically activated when users place their hands under the spout. Electronic mixers are extremely hygienic due to their contact-free operation. Like all Axor basin mixers, the new electronic mixers are fitted with EcoSmart technology, which limits the water flow to five litres per minute without impairing the functionality. The sensor control itself saves even more water and energy due to the short run-on time of around 1-1.5 seconds. This ensures that the water is only flowing if it is actually required. 01372 465655 www.hansgrohe.co.uk

Product Design Manager Lee Reed says, “We are constantly looking at trends across our entire portfolio but if something works well, don’t change it. Our current range is the best we have seen for design and price. We’ve added to the tap section this year with the new square Fabia range, which also features subtle curves to match Vienna accessories. With the launch of the new brochure in June we focused on adding more affordable brassware for the average consumer. We have a variety of new shower valves and heads that have strong appeal to the price savvy customer in the current economic climate. These include the new Triumph head, which has LED lights powered by the movement of water.” 01924 868383 www.tcbathrooms.com

Bright nickel was the standard finish for brassware until chrome plating came along in the 1920s. Softer than chrome, nickel is a lovely choice for a traditional bathroom. Nickel plated taps from the St James Collection by Marflow have a two-layer plating process that produces a hardwearing finish and gives a lustrous shine. Black porcelain handles have recently been added to the St James Collection and work very well with nickel – as shown here. 0121 358 1555 www.stjamescollection.com

Inspired by the iconic Flat Iron building in New York, Carlo Colombo's Skidoo Tap Series for Teuco brings an architectural charm to any bathroom or en-suite setting. When Flat Iron was initially built in 1902, it created the phenomenon of unpredictable wind-currents, which blew up the dresses of lady passers-by! Such Marilyn Monroe moments regularly led to a surge of onlookers and, so the story goes, the Manhattan police were obliged to intervene, shouting ”Skidoo, Skidoo!” (”Move along! Move along!”). Available in chromium, the Skidoo collection includes bath-taps (rimmounted and floor-standing), basin and bidet versions and the eye-catching shower-totem shown here. 01279 771159 www.teuco.com

Sometimes, it’s the things you don’t see that turn a bathroom from ‘boring’ to ‘brilliant’...

ow water pressure is a daily source of irritation and inconvenience to countless people in the UK. It’s a scourge and it prevents many from enjoying those benefits of a modern bathroom that the rest of us take for granted. Until now, the ‘traditional’ low water pressure solution, which involves the installation of a cold water header tank, was both too costly and too inconvenient an exercise for many potential customers to consider… The good news is that now, for the first time, an affordable solution to the problem is available. Salamander’s Home Boost is not only inexpensive, it’s also easy to install: it’s compact, quiet and – most importantly – it’s fully compliant with UK water regulations. As the first plumber to install Home Boost, Scarborough-based Andy Browne was impressed immediately. “It really does have the look and feel of quality about it”, he said, “and it’s got metal threaded ends so there’s no plastic to mess about with. To be honest, it’s dead easy to connect: Home Boost goes after your stop tap, you need a check valve on there, then a drain-off cock onto the pump and finally a full bore isolation valve. Any plumber could do the job in under an hour.” Home Boost applies leading-edge micro-technology to an old, old problem: it is quick, efficient and comparatively inexpensive. Home Boost is a compact unit, which can be fitted under the kitchen sink after the stopcock, with a simple three-quarter inch thread on the inlet and outlet of the unit. The electrical connection is via a plug.

the Mirror Cabinet Collection, with all cabinets constructed from high quality aluminium or stainless steel as standard, providing both exceptional quality and value. RAK’s new Smart Storage Collection completes the RAKextra range. It includes a variety of stylish and cost effective drawer and hinged cabinets, with integral ceramic basins, as well as matching slimline storage units. All cabinets have a sleek, contemporary design, a premium gloss acrylic finish and are available in black or white. Rob Jull, RAK UK’s Managing Director, explains the rationale behind the new collection: “It’s not all about price, although that’s one of the criteria for success, especially in the current tough economic climate. Good design is equally important, as is the ability to source a complete boxed, quality product, and to ensure reliability of supply and performance. Add in good aftersales support and continued product development and you complete the circle. Our aim has always been to offer our dealers the very best value-for-money possible. Our new shower enclosures and accessories along with our existing products - fulfil each of these criteria at a range of price points to suit all pockets. And, we’re confident that this will provide a unique sales opportunity for both our valued, existing partners and for new customers too.”

SMALL
SPACE SAUNA Although just about every home in Scandinavia has a sauna, the idea has not really taken off here despite the therapeutic benefits. Part of the reason is space especially in apartments where there isn’t a garden or garage where the cabin can be sited.
Duravit has solved the problem with Inipi, a compact sauna specially designed for home installation. Designed in collaboration with EOOS, the Inipi Super B compact sauna measures just 120 by 120cm and will accommodate one user in comfort. There is also a larger two-person model that measures 240 by 120cm. Inipi features a stone control motif - a cultural reference to North American Indians who sat around heated stones in their sweat lodges - or inipi. The panel is integrated laterally at the front of the sauna and is used to adjust the temperature, the heater timer and the digital hourglass. During the rest phase an eco function saves energy, reducing the temperature in the sauna by up to 20ºC. A button can be used to control the function that pours water over the hot stones.

Available in 160 by 70cm, 170 by 70cm, 170 by 75cm and 180 by 80cm sizes, the BetteSelect is designed for comfort. The overflow can be positioned at either the foot end or at either side of the bath 650mm from the foot end. A handsome bath adds interest and character to any bathroom. Freestanding designs also help to give an illusion of space in a smaller space.
splash The Kaldewei Comfort Select operating panel has an electronic control unit, a drain and overflow fitting and a shower hose. The panel integrates into the rim of the bath and allows precise selection of the required water temperature. The temperature is correct right from the start - there is no need to run the filler for a while. The panel also regulates the water inlet and outflow. Freestanding baths can be filled using a special Kaldewei Comfort Select fitting. The panel also electronically controls the shower function. The hose can be sunk into the rim of the bath or fitted to the outside. 01480 498053 www.kaldewei.com
The cabin itself is a wooden frame glazed at the front. None of the technology is visible as the sauna stones and heater are hidden behind a panel. The Super B compact has an adjustable backrest and horizontal louvres with LED lights. Benches are arranged on two levels and are long enough to lie down on in the larger model. The exterior is available in white or dark American walnut. Both sauna variants come as corner and back to wall models. The larger model can be installed freestanding in the centre of a room. Duravit say that the saunas take about two hours to install.
