The WRAS-approved Flo-mate pump from Stuart Turner is designed to be connected directly to the incoming main to boost flow without the need for a cold water break tank. Where pressure is poor, Flo-mate will deliver an additional 1.5 bar at a maximum flow rate of 12 litres a minute, meeting the requirements of most combi boilers and in line with UK water regulations. The pump also features a built in bypass that means flow is not restricted when mains pressure exceeds 1.5 bar. The pump starts automatically when a flow rate of 0.6 litres per minute or more exists. For more information go to www.stuart-turner.co.uk/products/flo-mate where you will find technical data sheets and more or call 01491 572655.

New to the range are Moonstone, Sandstone and Anthracite finishes, available as 375mm by 2.6m panels. “The new retail brochure has been designed to demonstrate the high quality of installation and real sense of luxury that Marbrex delivers,” said Nicola Seymour. “A room can be transformed with relative ease and with much less fuss and disruption than using traditional tiling.” Marbrex features tongue and groove joints that are waterproof and do not need grouting. The panels can be fixed to plaster, brickwork or battening using general purpose gun adhesive or neutral cure low modulus silicone. Panels can also be fitted directly over existing tiling using a moisture cure solvent free adhesive or silicone sealant. 01827 317200 www.marbrexpanels.co.uk

In addition, new low vanity units are available in various sizes and can be combined with all three new Starck 1 console basins as well as with other basins. KNOW THE MARKET The bathroom furniture market over the past three years has, like most sectors, suffered as a result of the poor economic climate in the UK. According to AMA Research's Bathroom Market UK 2010-2014 report, in 2007 the domestic bathroom market sector was worth around £750 million, falling to below £700m in 2008 and then to below £600m in 2009. This dramatic fall was experienced by every sector of the interiors industry but on a more positive note, there are areas of growth within the sector, modular furniture being the main beneficiary. The appeal to consumers is easy to see changing a pedestal basin for a modular unit that combines storage, a basin and often a mirror too is a no-brainer in terms of fast and easy improvement. With prices starting at under £500 this can be a budget option too - although it is possible to spend a great deal more than this on items such as V&B’s beautiful Hommage (pictured) which is more akin to fine furniture. AMA's report predicts that growth will resume across the market in the middle term, returning to its 2007 levels by 2014. Obviously much depends on the Eurozone situation so this may be an over optimistic prediction - but you ignore modular furniture at your peril. Modular fitted furniture represents by far and away the largest share of the UK bathroom market. It has proved to be remarkably resilient during the recession, with the bathroom furniture market currently worth around £100m. In this feature we have selected our favourite modular pieces currently available. On pages 8–12 you will find specific news from Pelipal, Utopia and Mereway.

Characterised by very simple lines and lots of fine detailing, Delos from Duravit is comfortable to use and has a genuine lightness of design. This is achieved by hidden fixings and other detailing such as the mirror being mirrored along the sides with operation by sensor control; the glass shelf is 'extra-white' so does not appear to have green edges; no handles on drawers or cabinets and there is also a delicate LED light canopy that provides non-glare illumination for the face. Delos is available in two real-wood finishes and in a fresh high-gloss white. With an innovative, brushed finish, the surfaces bring out the natural beauty of the wood in Dark Walnut or Light Oak. Included in the new Delos collection are wallmounted consoles, tall cabinets, semi-high cabinets and vanity units with robust glass shelves and maple or walnut drawer organisers offering ample storage space. Handy towel holders can be attached to any side of the console. 0845 500 7787 www.duravit.co.uk

uk success for pelipal A successful showing at KBB2012 attracted an influx of new retailers to German bathroom manufacturer Pelipal® but there are still good opportunities for more.

W
ayne Dance, managing director of InHouse who handle Pelipal® exclusively in the UK, puts the success of the brand launch down to “great products and great service, plus really hard work from the UK sales team. We’ve had excellent success with Schüller in kitchens and when we found Pelipal in Germany we knew we had an equally good brand. The quality of the products, support and service are superb and enable us to represent a brand with confidence that offers something special to UK bathroom retailers.” “It’s been an exciting year as well in terms of product development. The UK back-to-wall system where UK retailers had input into the design ensures that the offer meets our market needs. Pelipal has also just previewed some of its potential products for 2013 at MOW which has been really exciting,” says Dance.
®
Surprisingly he finds that the downturn in the UK housing market and tough financial times generally have not brought about a decline in the market. “The UK housing market has been declining or at least not growing in these past few years,” he says. “What this means is that consumers are looking to improve their quality of life at home. While before they might have settled for a new suite, now people are looking to create a relaxing bathroom space at home where there’s plenty of storage to keep things out of sight. The interest in Pelipal’s range of mirrors and LED lighting has been fantastic, as consumers want to be able to move from task driven lighting in the morning, to a more relaxed ambience for evening bathing. This has meant that retailers can provide high specification in design and products, translating to a higher average order for bathroom furniture.”

Previewed at MOW are new additions to the Leonardo range from Pelipal. The glass front with horizontal grain is highlighted with LED under basin lighting.
While people want more for their money, this does not mean that they are willing to pay incredibly high prices. With Pelipal there’s a wide range of products to suit all price points, which means that retailers can still satisfy consumer demands without putting them off with unrealistic pricing. The other point for retailers is simplicity. “Offering a huge choice has commonly meant displaying multiple furniture brands, making retailing unnecessarily complicated. Through Pelipal retailers can offer many value for money furniture ranges in a myriad of shapes and styles. There's no compromise on quality and design either with innovative LED lighting above mirrors, behind drawers and beneath counter tops. Pelipal’s functionality is also impressive. For instance they use seamless laser edge technology, which improves water resistance by 400 percent. Pelipal offers as many benefits to the retailer as it does to their clients,” says Wayne. Pelipal is an established company that has been producing high quality furniture for over 100 years. Huge investment in cutting edge technology is backed by a large warehouse facility and a dedicated distribution network, ensuring that every step adheres to the standards of perfection commonly associated with German manufacturing. Attention to detail is key for Pelipal. Even cupboard fastenings embrace elaborate technical innovation with the application of new pivot point CLIP top Blumotion hinges that can be used in the smallest of spaces. They open up door design possibilities as thicker doors can be used with no fear of collision or catching. High gloss lacquer and glass fronts combine with optimum storage and functionality to offer a world of design possibilities. The experienced retailer knows that it takes more than top end design to secure the word of mouth referral that sees business grow. After all, you can only be certain of the highest standards if you receive the same level of care that you already offer your customers. Pelipal understands that a reputation for providing the very best bathroom collections begins before the showroom door. Retailers benefit from comprehensive UK support from an experienced team at InHouse. This is backed by full national PR and marketing activity. With comprehensive ranges that can be tailored to the individual, Pelipal collections mean that today’s bathroom retailer is able to maximise reputation and referral by keeping everything under one roof and in house.
Pelipal understands that good bathroom design is about personalising storage. Here they show incabinet storage options and panel shelving to make the most of all available space.

Luxury Geo
Utopia has just announced its biggest ever product launch with exciting new ranges for 2013.
The Geo range of luxury worktops is available in bespoke Geo-Stone engineered stone or in Geo-Strata laminate complete with a platinum inlay across the length of the unit. The Geo worktops are available in 800, 1200 and 1600mm lengths. P
relaunched to retailers earlier this year, Utopia’s latest collection of products has now been finalised and is ready for market. Over 400 retailers enjoyed a sneak preview in March and the company used the feedback gained from this event, and from a survey of 2,000 retail customers, to finalise the new collection which includes contemporary and traditional furniture, accessories and tiles. It is encouraging for the industry as a whole to hear that over a third of the customers surveyed saw upgrading the bathroom as the best way to add value while about half were actively thinking of having work done and wanted to keep up with the latest trends. “Our new ranges are not only design led but demand led,” says CEO Simon Russell. “By working closely with retailers and consumers, we have created our best ever Utopia range. It is set to plug the gap for traditional and ultra modern bathroom furniture while providing retailers with fresh concepts to cater for all tastes.”
Modular Halo Inspired by European styling, the modular Halo range features a streamlined chrome handle and has a concealed soft touch drawer system. Shown here is Bavarian Cherry one of eight new colours for 2013. The modular units are available in 500, 650, 800, 1000 and 1200mm widths and the range includes solutions for cloakrooms, family bathrooms and en suites. There is also the option of a 400mm storage unit. A choice of illuminated demister mirrors or mirror cabinets is available to complete the look. The mirror cabinet shown right is available as a 1200 by 300 by 320mm pull out drawer unit or as a 1200 by 300 by 180mm left or right hand drawer unit.

he cost of care is a shocker - in fact, a new bathroom is a bargain in comparison. Good private care homes charge around £1,000 a week, council-run establishments £400-£500, depending on location. Care at home is expensive too - and not always the answer as the carer does not always have the time to do an effective job. One of the great barriers to being able to live at home is an inaccessible bathroom. Climbing into a standard bath or using a WC mounted at the standard height can be akin to an Olympic challenge for some older people but there are many good products available to make life easier while maintaining style in the bathroom. Level access showering is by far the easiest bathing solution for those who are less mobile than they used to be. Walk in enclosures and wet rooms are barrier free and a seat and grab rails add extra security. A walk in enclosure that occupies the same footprint as a standard bath makes a fast and
16 • BATHROOM JOURNAL DECEMBER 2012
economic improvement. Full equipped moulded enclosures, such as the range from Kinedo and from Coram, are another quick answer as the shower and sometimes a moulded seat are included. Barrier free wetrooms are ideal and, thanks to the emergence of new floor formers, are easier to fit than they used to be. There’s also a good choice of screening options where the glass goes direct to the floor for use in a wetroom where the customer has concerns about getting the rest of the bathroom floor wet. For customers who insist on a bath, a walk in is the obvious option - but be sure to buy from a reputable supplier as these baths can be problematic. Eurocare are experts in this area - find out more about the company on pages 16-17. Ideal Standard has designed an accessible bath which is lower at the sides so easier to step into. Sensibly positioned hand rails are a big help - ideally what is needed is a rail to one side of the bath to hold on to while stepping in and out, and one positioned to
aid sitting down and standing up again. Rails with a slightly textured finish provide better grip. Safe hot water is an essential for both bath fillers and for showers. Just about every shower on the market now has thermostatic control and a safe maximum temperature setting. Thermostatic bath fillers are easier to find since the amendment to Building Regulations. As of April 6, 2010, all newbuild homes across England and Wales must have devices fitted to baths to limit the temperature of the water to 48°C. That temperature is still more than hot enough for domestic use, but it removes the potential for the most serious scald injuries to happen. TMVs blend hot water (which is heated before use to a temperature of 60°C or above in order to kill legionella bacteria) with cold to ensure water comes out of the tap at a safe temperature. Intatec is a leader in this technology and you will also find thermostatic bath fillers available from Ideal Standard, Bristan and other manufacturers.

KNOW HOW There are several important points to consider if you are designing a bathroom for an older or less able person. Some of this may appear blindingly obvious, but able people often do not appreciate the small things that can make life hard for an older or less able person.
STEP UP, STEP DOWN Designed by Marc Sadler, the First bath collection from Ideal Standard has a lower step-in height of just 48cm, 7cm less than the average bath, making it particularly easy to get in and out of for children and the elderly. The design also ensures that depth and comfort are not affected. Ideal Standard First baths use breakthrough technology combining overflow protection and waste in the same system. Generous water levels can be obtained despite the lower step-in height thanks to the new fully patented Ideal Waste System. A simple open and close control is positioned on the rim of the bath and instead of a traditional overflow hole; a twin pipe overflow is connected directly to the water but cleverly hidden behind the bath. When the bath is filled with water, one side of the overflow pipe fills to the same level of the bath. If the bath is overfilled the water in one side of the pipe will filter up and over the other side of the overflow pipe directly into the waste system and drain safely away. First baths are available in five sizes. 01482 346461 www.ideal-standard.co.uk
• What is the level of the user’s ability? If he or she uses a wheelchair, the basin, WC and shower must be accessible. •
Flooring should be non slip.
•
Good, clear lighting is an essential.
• Talk to the person about the sort of help they need - a grab rail, for example, is not much use if it isn’t giving support when it is needed. • Make sure the WC is at a comfortable sitting height - this is easy to achieve with wall hung plus there are some higher than standard WCs available. • Make sure the door can be unlocked from the outside in case of accidents. • A person who has difficulty using the WC unaided can be greatly helped by a shower toilet. These are available from Geberit and from the Japanese specialist Toto. • Safe hot water is an essential. Choose a thermostatic shower and bath filler - preferably one compliant with the TMV2 scheme.
Many installations of low level shower trays are compromised as the tray is being installed onto an unbreachable concrete floor. In instances such as this you are usually left with no alternative other than installing the tray on adjustable feet (or riser kit). While this will allow the tray and waste to be installed the accessibility could be compromised as in effect you no longer have a low level tray - (typically the addition of adjustable feet will add about 100mm to the overall height) so there is then a step up hazard. Saniflo has the perfect solution for this sort of installation dilemma. Traymatic is a shower tray at only 46mm high and is supplied with either an internal or external pump, which sits above floor level avoiding the need to either raise the tray up or excavate the floor. Traymatic will discharge in 22mm pipework a distance of 2.5 metres vertically and 20 metres horizontally (or a lesser combination of the two) so is ideal for adding facilities in a bedroom or granny annexe away from the main soil stack. Traymatic is available in the following sizes: 900 by 900mm, 1000 by 800mm and 1200 by 800mm sizes. 020 8842 0033 www.saniflo.co.uk

lready looking ahead towards 2013, Eurocare Bathrooms is set to launch its most exciting range of products to date, which will set new standards in design and ease of use. Designed and manufactured in house, the new shower products feature satin or high polished silver frames and safety glass. The range includes doors and screens designed to fit direct to a wet floor or on to a low level shower tray. These showering products will form the basis of a lifestyle collection named Inspirations - a product range that was originally launched in 2006. Accessible bathing was, at that time, seen as a specialist area and was not embraced by the majority of mainstream retailers. Products were, on the whole, driven by need and focused predominantly on function rather than looks. The Inspirations range was revolutionary, leading the way for other manufacturers to change the way they approached accessible bathroom design. Inspirations was just a little ahead of its time - but despite this the company has continued to offer the range on a request only basis ever since. With a lack of government funding and an ageing population that is expanding year on year, Eurocare has seen an increased demand for its products, particularly from the retail sector. This increased demand has led to a year-long development programme, resulting in a range of products that is now ideally placed to sit within the retail market. Eye catching and stylish, the showers have been inclusively designed with end users firmly in mind. The products are practical, easy to use and - most importantly - accessible. The full height flat screen options are the perfect answer for those looking for a cost effective solution. Users can choose between frameless or framed screens, with either a bracing bar or a floor to ceiling post. A floor to ceiling post has the additional benefit of providing user support and brings rigidity to the shower. Where access needs to be maximised - or where obstacles need to be avoided in a small bathroom - a hinged screen is the ideal solution. Available in full or half

The flat screen options are extremely flexible and are quick and easy to install. The profiles are extremely robust and the 6mm safety glass is available clear or smoked. As glass may not be recommended for all users, framed screens are also available in clear or smoked polycarb - a high grade safety material commonly used in accessible bathing. Also featured in the range is a selection of sliding doors. Already popular among Eurocare customers, the full height sliding doors are totally barrier free and come in a wide range of sizes. The generous wall adjustment makes the doors perfect for an alcove application where size and fit can often vary. Easy to open and close, the doors offer wide access for easy use. Featuring full height glass panels, sliding doors are best suited to more active users rather than those needing assistance. Sophisticated and contemporary, the doors bring a modern feel to any home and will be available in the New Year in high polished silver. The final product to feature in the 2013 Inspirations Collection is the piece de la resistance of the Eurocare range. Being kept firmly under wraps until the launch, the product is medium to top end and features chrome with 8mm safety glass. Visually stunning, it will take the product range to a whole new level and is sure to change any misconceptions retailers may have about accessible showering. In addition to shower ranges, Eurocare offers an excellent collection of walk in baths. Acclaimed for their good looks and ease of use, the baths have no hazardous catches or operating devices and come with a lifetime guarantee. The range features the Adagio Ancora, the UK’s lowest walk in bath which has a threshold of just 45mm. The team is also working on lowering the threshold on another of the company’s walk in baths. Offering a wide range of supplementary services, excellent back up and a product range manufactured to high standards in the UK, Eurocare has it all when it comes to accessible bathing. 0844 801 0660 www.eurocare-showers.com

What is a wet room? Essentially it is an open space where the shower becomes part of the whole room - adding a spa like quality and a touch of modern luxury that can be complemented by a range of accessories. As well as keeping the bathroom in line with modern trends, a well-installed, well-designed wet room can add value to the property and has many advantages for families whose homes need to be suitable for multigenerational use. An open shower area is also easy to clean and maintain. These days many people prefer to shower rather than use a bath so it really has become a question of whether a bath is actually necessary - a question that gains momentum when the issue of water saving measures is considered. With an average shower output of 12 litres a minute, a fiveminute shower saves 110 litres when compared to filling a bath. For a fourbedroom house this roughly equates to a cost saving of £194 a year.
wetrooms are a winner Installers and specifiers have reported a steady increase in the number of wetroom projects they are asked to undertake - yet many home owners remain doubtful about the ease with which a bathroom can be transformed into a luxurious wetroom and may not understand the key benefits such a transformation can deliver.
The current economic situation means that many homeowners are looking to add value to their property through refurbishment rather than trying to move. Wet rooms are attractive to families where three or more generations may be living within one home as the facilities are accessible to everyone and enable assisted care - an important consideration as more families opt to care for elderly parents in their own homes. There are various elements involved in installing a wet room. The biggest concern is draining and waterproofing. A high quality former - essentially an underfloor shower tray - should be used to ensure that the room is watertight and properly sealed. TriForm® from AKW is a new easy to fit linear former that is perfect for wetroom installations. The practical qualities of TriForm® are balanced with strong design. The former is capable of bearing weights up to 40 stone (24.5kg), so it is resilient enough for wheelchair users or those needing help to shower. It features a unique integral trough waste that maintains watertight integrity without silicone. The trough allows up to three wastes to (cont...)

be fitted for maximum draining capacity and makes TriForm® suitable for even the most powerful showers. Many formers are designed with just two fall planes to encourage water away - meaning they are only suitable for alcove installations. This can mean the need for a step - which is a hazard for those using the shower. The trimmable TriForm® has four fall planes, so it can be fitted anywhere in the bathroom, delivering safety and performance benefits over competitor products that only offer two fall planes. The other important element in the wetroom is, of course, an effective and safe shower. The Luda® S electric shower from AKW is a stylish addition to any bathroom and has an attractive tear shape that gives a contemporary look. The shape also eliminates sharp edges and maximises space for a seated user. AKW has brought its considerable expertise to the sensor interface of the Luda® S, designing a simple control panel that allows the user full independence. Consisting of two sets of plus and minus symbols, both these and the accompanying text “Temp” and “Flow” are raised so that users with impaired visibility can identify the appropriate controls by feel. These touch controls are reinforced by audio recognition technology and illuminated marine lights that recognise when the user changes the temperature or flow.

A shower screen can be incorporated as another element of the wet room should the user wish. A screen can make assisted care - either for children or elderly people - a more straightforward process. One of AKW’s most recent developments is the Larenco® Duo, a shower screen range that has been inclusively designed with two full height split glass doors connected by a unique DuoLinx handle to lock the doors together. The split door option offers a convenient and multipurpose solution for those needing care assistance and can also act as a splash guard for parents bathing young children.

The Streek brothers have built Claygate into an impressive and customer focused business.
the art of dist Andrew Streek, Joint MD at Claygate, explains why the company is moving forward at a time when many others are finding business a struggle.
Q. Times are recognised as being tough in the bathroom business with AW Andes leaving distribution and tc bathrooms going into administration. How are you combating the current climate? We are very fortunate that in the good times, we built up some financial security for these times we are now facing. Historically the industry has lost some very reputable companies and this is a sad loss. One can never become complacent. If you do, then you too could suffer the same fate. We are very mindful that customers have a choice and this should and does keep us on our toes! Q. What do you feel you have to offer that has kept you in a good position in the market - is it service, product mix, delivery times or something else? I always ask myself what would I expect as a customer. In the early years I probably would have said that price was most important but as I have matured in this industry, I have to say that service is paramount to any successful business. It isn’t a great business model to be the cheapest if you haven’t got it in stock or can’t deliver in time.
The company benefits from custom built warehousing and offices. The new warehouse extension is at the top.
22 • BATHROOM JOURNAL DECEMBER 2012
Q. What do you think the market is looking for at the moment - is it price or style driven product?
There certainly seems to be a move towards value for money products but to be fair, it’s a bit like the automotive industry; they don’t make a bad car these days. Most products are well-designed, well-made and good value. However, there could be too much synergy with the automotive industry. At a glance, a lot of sanitaryware products do look the same. Q. Do you see internet selling playing a greater role in the market - what is your view on how this affects retailers - and how do you combat it? I’m not a huge internet fan. I bought a wellknown brand of pressure washer recently and when it went wrong a few days later, I had a lot of grief getting it exchanged. In the end, I went to a local dealer who solved the problem for me. Sometimes saving £10 or £20 can be more trouble than it is worth. I think there is a solid argument for some products like CDs and other boxed items, but if we don’t support in some way certain businesses, we will end up not stepping outside the front door to do anything! For certain things like baths and pottery, they need to be handled by specialists with kid gloves. I won’t be complacent though about the drift in the future to online sales within our industry. Perhaps the answer is for us all to improve and become a little more professional.

Q. How have you changed your business to meet the current market situation? We have increased our distribution to enable reliable and fast response to our customers’ needs in times when they have understandably reduced the stock on their shelves. It is really tough offering “next day”, particularly if we only deliver one toilet seat to Lands End! You have to consider the overall picture. I’m sure the post office does not make a profit when they deliver a letter or parcel to the Outer Hebrides! Q. Do you think suppliers are offering adequate support to the market - if not, what would you like to see them doing? That’s a difficult question. If the showrooms are finding it tough then so are the distributors and suppliers. The market is definitely smaller than it was a few years ago and we are all chasing a smaller piece of the pie. After spending a lot of effort, retailers gaining a sale need to be able to place an order and get the goods easily. Claygate struggles sometimes even with the resources behind us to deliver. If our suppliers haven’t got stock then neither have we. Q. Have you any advice for retailers on how they can boost business? I always feel that first impressions are key; tidy and sharp showrooms and helpful staff. I still believe this is a people industry and once you gain the confidence of a customer the battle is won. This only applies however, once the customer is outside your showroom! If there aren’t many buyers, as currently, is all about offering something the competition can’t.
