Good news from Roman is that the price of Infinity shower trays and Colossus Roman Stone trays has been reduced. The IntaKlean magnetic central heating filter has proved to be a big hit with plumbers and installers. beating the trend at crosswater Crosswater Holdings – the name behind the Crosswater, Simpsons and Bauhaus brands is showing healthy performance despite on-going poor trading conditions in the bathroom industry.

ounded in 1998 by David Hance, who started business selling taps from the boot of his car, Crosswater Holdings is now a serious player in the bathroom business. In 2012, the company was 26 percent ahead of the preceding year, and six percent ahead of budget. Turnover was around £40 million, investment was made in a new showroom and training centre with working displays, there was an increase in the number of vehicles in the delivery fleet and the recruitment of high profile sales managers. “The new showroom is a fabulous resource for retailers,“ says Marten Baker, Commercial Manager of Bauhaus. “Dealers can come along to see the full range, receive product training and discover what the Crosswater set up is about.” Around 70 percent of the brassware offered by Crosswater is made in Italy - “but it is to our design and volume means that we can get UK-based ranges,” Marten explains. “It benefits both sides. Shower enclosure manufacture is UK-based with trays from a Swiss manufacturer.” Looking to the future, Marten says that Crosswater is engaged in a ground breaking digital showering project. “We are developing something that will be easy to use and easy to install - some of the products on the market are far too complicated,” he says. “We will also have an app for the product - it is all part of the growth of technology at home, which is

now moving into the bathroom. Water saving is the other major development we are looking at and we will have products coming to market in this area.” Crosswater maintains its focus on supplying the specialist retail sector but has has also recently created a contracts division. “We are already doing well in the boutique end of the hotel segment,” says Marten. The team has already secured the Ampersand in London SW7 and several other prestigious regional projects. “On the retail side we canvassed our customers to find out what they wanted - and discovered that what they did not want was to wait for products. This is particularly true of furniture - a basin unit, for example, can be an impulse purchase and the customer wants it straight away. As a result we have made a heavy commitment to stock and our nationwide delivery service. We have also introduced a number of new trade and consumer marketing initiatives - including much greater emphasis on the consumer, which helps to push the product through to the end user and helps retailers and designers. All group products are now available via Virtual Worlds and we certainly believe that this has made an impact on the number of retailers specifying our products. We know that times are tough but we have a big commitment to our customers - and big ambitions for growth, so the launch of Brochure apps and a redesigned website with an interactive brochure website will be

welcome additions to our marketing armoury with more to come in the Spring.” The Crosswater Centres of Excellence scheme is made up of carefully selected retailers throughout the UK. “They were primarily existing retailers who we talked to and explained the benefits of being a Centre of Excellence,” Marten explains. “These retailers are our sounding board, being at the coal face of bathroom retail and they have a wealth of informed opinion we need to tap into. They are committed to taking products across all group brands and we take a little pressure off them with assistance on the installaiton of displays and supply of POS. The new scheme is starting to pay dividends for Crosswater and our retail partners.” What about the ever thorny question of internet selling? “We limit how many can sell our products online and insist that they also have a ‘bricks and mortar’ showroom. We have agreements on the style of online presentation and work closely with e-commerce customers to ensure pricing guidelines are worked to. It is a policy that means we don’t upset our High Street retailers because it gives them the protection they need. After one of the wettest summers on record, water saving might not seem to be the most urgent thing to consider. While water itself is relatively cheap heating it up for baths or showers definitely is not, so using less means lower fuel bills and greener living.

ur 21st-century busy lifestyle means that most consumers now shower daily rather than languishing in the bath - a change that saves money as well as time. A standard size 1700mm long bath uses up to 80 litres of water whereas a five minute shower using at a flow rate of six litres a minute uses about 35 litres, saving 45 litres of water. A fiveminute power shower uses about 60 litres, which still saves 20 litres of water when compared to a full bath. A large freestanding bath, it will, of course take much more water and the savings will be greater. Yvonne Orgill, Chairman of the BMA, says that times have changed since the days when power showers used huge amounts of water. "We have moved on massively from the bathroom crimes being committed in the ‘80s - those 20 or even 30 litres a minute power showers which could drain a conventional hot water tank in a matter of minutes. Advanced product design has given us showers which use the Venturi effect (where air is mixed with water) to give the feeling of a powerful, satisfying shower. The very best of these uses just six litres per minute - and I’d defy a consumer to find fault with the experience. Reducing hot water consumption can make a difference where it matters - to people’s pockets. Heating water for use in the bathroom accounts for a quarter of average household utility bills. Our research shows that the most efficient items in the bathroom can help people save up to £300 a year on their utility bills.”

save For a consumer with an existing mixer shower, it may be possible to reduce the amount of water it uses. If the shower has a handset, replacing the head with one of the latest models that mix air with the water (such as Raindance Air from Hansgrohe or Satinjet from Methven) to give the impression of a stronger spray while actually reducing the amount of water used can make a real difference. These shower heads usually offer three or more spray effects and cost from around £30. Consumers can check whether a low-flow or water-saving shower head will benefit you by putting a two-litre container on the shower floor under the existing head. If the container takes less than 12 seconds to fill when the shower's running on full changing the head could reduce water usage. Reducing the flow when there is a large, fixed watering can style head or a fixed head on an existing mixer shower is more difficult. A flow restrictor can be fitted - but check with the plumber that this won’t adversely affect the performance of the shower head - big watering can style heads need quite a lot of water to work properly. Croydex flow restrictors cost around £12 - see page 9 for more information. Installing a new shower opens up a world of water and energy saving models. The Water Efficient Scheme run by the Bathroom Manufacturer’s Association lists products that carry the label - you can see the list with pictures and full details of flow rates at www.waterefficiencylabel.org.uk. onsumers want to be environmentally friendly - but research suggests they don’t really want it enough. Being hit in the pocket is another matter altogether especially these days as fuel prices are constantly rising. lights fantastic Good lighting is a vital element of bathroom design - but should add drama and interest as well as illumination.

deally bathroom lighting should be designed in right at the beginning of the planning process rather than being added as an afterthought. Step 1 is to talk with the customer about how the space will be used - this will determine how many lighting scenes need to be included. A small cloakroom may need just one lighting scene but a larger room with a bath or walk in shower allows at least two - “bright” for speedy stops, and “soft and low” for relaxing soaks. To create the different scenes, plan on at least two wall switches. These can now be legally positioned inside the bathroom as long as they are an appropriate distance from wet areas, but the most popular solution is to position the switches outside adjacent to the door.

General light A ceiling light in the centre of the room provides overall illumination but with very little interest - and may leave some corners shadowy. A triple spotlight can be individually directed onto three different points in the room to provide pools of light

where needed and is a more interesting lighting scene. A third alternative is recessed ceiling mounted downlights. You may only need three or four for a typical bathroom. Position them close to the edges of the room in order to get an attractive scalloped wash down the wall. This approach provides very good general lighting but with a gentler, more sophisticated ambiance.

A magnifying mirror is an invaluable aid for shaving, applying make-up and other personal grooming. This can be a separate illuminated mirror or a magnifying section of the bathroom cabinet. The illuminated version is definitely the most efficient choice.

Task lighting

Mood lighting

As its name suggests, task lighting is light for doing things. The mirror is task light central. There are several options, but most effective is a solution that illuminates both sides of the face to ensure an even, flattering glow with no shadows. You can achieve this with either an illuminated mirror or wall lights positioned either side of the mirror. Every basin needs a mirror, so illuminated mirrors provide a simple twoin-one solution. Some also incorporate shaver sockets, a clock and even a radio. Choose from mirrors with integrated horizontal or vertical lighting. Some clever

Mood lighting gives the bathroom a relaxing ambience. Recessed LEDs at skirting height are great for providing a wash of light across the floor. One bright idea from Astro Lighting is to continue the bath panel down to just above the floor and position a strip of LEDs to cast a gentle glow out from behind the panel and make the bath appear to float. If you are building in niches for display or storage, fit LED downlights to really bring the area to life. Small wall-mounted LED lights can be used to illuminate designated spots in the bathroom and provide light up and down the wall.

KNOW THE ZONE Lighting is zoned depending on its position in the bathroom. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower and any fitting in this zone must be low voltage with a 12V maximum and rated at least IP67. Zone 1 is the area above the bath to a height of 2.25m from the floor. A minimum rating of IP44 is required for this zone. Zone 2 is the area reaching 0.6m outside the perimeter of the bath and to a height of 2.25m from the floor. In this zone, you must have a rating of at least IP44. Zone 3 is anywhere outside Zones 0, 1 and 2 and where no water jet is likely to be used. In this instance, no IP rating is needed. Plug in sockets are not allowed in the bathroom so any fitting needing power (such as an electric towel rail or a macerator) has to have a switched fused spur.

ver time the most decadent of bathrooms can suffer from problems such as leaks, tile loss and mould growth. Quite frequently, this is caused by inadequate backer boards or wall solutions that are susceptible to damp conditions, leading to a number of long-term problems that are expensive and time consuming to fix. When considering a new bathroom or a re-fit, the walls must be dealt with from the outset. Wall conditioning and its ability to withstand moisture is crucial so bathrooms have longevity and are sustainable to constant water exposure without being susceptible to common household problems. There are many different types of bathroom layout that require different solutions - some are fully tiled, some are part-tiled, for example. Using a board that is versatile and flexible in its application is therefore important to ensure there is complete cover, without detracting from the overall design, look and feel of the bathroom. Additional problems such as staining of walls, floors and ceilings are also commonplace if the right products are not used first time. For self-builders in particular, when often the end result is given more thought than the supporting materials, waterproofing areas can be seen as a huge challenge. Manufacturers and merchants, therefore, need to educate the consumer on the problems sub-standard materials can cause, and specify those that are designed with waterproofing in mind. Fermacell’s PowerPanel H2O is designed for waterproofing. Made from of cement bonded with a laminated structure reinforced with an alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh, PowerPanel H2O board provides a solution that is impervious to water and is versatile enough to be used on walls, floors and ceilings. very consumer who buys sanitaryware and bathroom furniture will also want at least one towel rail or ring, a soap dish, containers for shampoo etc in the shower area, a toothbrush holder, loo roll holder and a loo brush. They might also want some extras such as a bath bar, a dispenser for liquid soap, a stool, robe hooks, a laundry bin or maybe what used to be called a valet - a freestanding item for holding clean clothes. If you haven’t got these items on display to catch the customer while he or she is in the buying mood, you are missing out. Why hand it to the department stores and online specialists when the sale could be yours - and don’t forget you have the advantage of being able to show the accessories in situ with the other purchases - something an online supplier cannot do. Display is essential - either in roomsets with the sanitaryware or furniture the accessories are intended to complement, or on a wall board or stand. Most suppliers of accessories offer stands and boards. The refurb market is also important - and this is an area that Croydex has tackled head on with the Flexi-Fix range. Accessories in this range can be secured to the wall without damaging existing decor.
