s the housing market looks set to remain fragile as we move into 2012, the don’t move, improve ethos is fixed firmly in the minds of the nation’s homeowners. When making an investment in the home, consumers are now looking to get it right first time, especially when updating the hard working family bathroom. “Combining affordability with safety and style, Triton’s new Nene Cool Touch and Nene with Diverter and Body jets which have recently been introduced to Triton’s existing Unichrome mixer collection are an attractive option for discerning home owners. “Ideal for those who are sticking to a budget, or where younger family members need to be considered, the new Nene Cool Touch model draws cold water across the bar mixer to help to keep the body of the metal valve at a temperature that is comfortable to touch at all times. In addition, thermostatic control ensures that the water temperature does not fluctuate by more than 2oC from that selected by the user, providing customers with a showering solution that is suitable for the whole family. “The perfect solution for quick replacement projects or new builds and conversions, the Nene Cool Touch valve has a number of easy to install features including standard 150mm water inlet centres and functions to allow the riser rail to be matched to existing grout lines or tile centres. These innovative features mean the shower can be used as a fast and easy replacement for an existing mixer without the need for re-tiling the whole wall – keeping costs lower for the homeowner. “For those customers planning to take their showering space to the next level and create a spa style sanctuary in the bathroom – while still working to a strict budget – the new Unichrome Nene with Diverter and Body Jets is an affordable yet dramatic showering solution. Offering a combination of performance and good looks, the Nene with Diverter and Body Jets includes a choice of showering options such as an overhead deluge, a five mode hand held or three two mode body jets. As the diverter allows only one head to be used at any one time, performance always remains at its best. Controlling the choice of options is also really easy as the flow can simply be adjusted with a separate lever.” Both the Unichrome Nene Cool Touch and the Unichrome Nene with Diverter and Body Jets are available with a five year guarantee and are covered by Triton’s rapid replenishment service if parts are ordered before 5pm. Now available to suit every size and style of bathroom or cloakroom, furniture has become a favourite with UK consumers.
8 • BATHROOM JOURNAL DECEMBER 2011
few years ago furniture meant a vanity unit, often in the corner of a bedroom rather than in the bathroom itself. The big name German kitchen companies nearly all offered furniture back in the late 70s and early 80s – but it was far too bulky for British bathrooms and in those pre valve flushing days we were lacking the back to wall and wall hung WCs to go with it. Today there is a massive amount of choice in furniture, not just from leading manufacturers such as Utopia, Ellis, Shades and Montrose but also from sanitaryware companies and distributors and at all price points. Although the trend is moving towards modular furniture, there is still a good selection of fully fitted on the market for consumers who want this look. Gloss white and cream followed by light coloured wood effects such as maple and beech are
the most popular finishes. Solid wood still has strong appeal and has been very successful for both Utopia and Ellis. Textured finishes have also started to appear – Shades (see page 12) have an attractive textured Driftwood finish in the modular furniture collection. Roper Rhodes also has news for the retail market with a nice collection called R2. It is easy to specify, competitively priced, covers all the bases and you can read about it on pages 14 and 15. Multi purpose modular furniture that can be installed wall hung, on legs, framed or down to the floor with a plinth has become increasingly popular and gives retailers the option to offer several different looks from one display. Not that long ago it was unusual for a furniture manufacturer to offer basins. Utopia led the way – and now other major players in the field have followed. Furniture

Available either floor standing or wall hung, the unit has a wide range of doors across four price bands and an 18mm glued and dowelled cabinet. All Ellis furniture comes with a five year guarantee. 01484 514 212 www.ellisfurniture.co.uk

Philippe Starck has introduced new geometric variations to his classic bathroom furniture collections for Duravit. The barrel, as it is known, is now available as both a cylinder and a cuboid. Also new are rectangular low cabinets that provide the perfect platform for circular, square and tri oval console basins. Mirrors and mirror cabinets complete the line up. Cabinets are available in high gloss White, high gloss Black or a new Oak finish. 0845 500 7787
that comes with a dedicated basin all ready to install certainly makes life easier for retailers as there is no need to worry about getting the cut out right. Another interesting development has been the emergence of solid surfacing and real stone tops supplied ready to install. Utopia were pioneers with real ready to fit stone sourced from one of the best suppliers in the business and have taken the one stop shop idea a stage further on with a range of tiles specially designed to complement the furniture. Wall hung sanitaryware is growing in popularity so it is good to see furniture manufacturers developing units for use with wall hung pans. These units can eliminate the need to create a false wall as they house the frame and the cistern – which also effectively deals with the important need for easy access should there be a problem. s any successful retailer will tell you having the right product, offering the widest selection of ranges that are made to strict quality standards and doing the whole thing without unnecessary complication are the keys to success. Wayne Dance, MD of InHouse, the exclusive UK importer of Pelipal® German bathroom furniture, feels the brand offers retailers everything needed to attract consumers and boost sales. “To be able to offer the widest choice, retailers may have to deal with multiple brands, making running a successful retail outlet unnecessarily complicated,” he says. “Through Pelipal®, retailers can offer the best in quality and design in a huge choice of shapes and sizes and to suit every budget. New to the UK and one of the largest bathroom furniture manufacturers in Europe, Pelipal® offers quality furniture and basins combined with innovative LED lighting above mirrors, behind drawers and beneath counter tops. Functionality is equally impressive with seamless laser edge technology improving water resistance by up to 400 percent. Pelipal® offers as many benefits to the retailer as it does to their clients.” Ranging from family friendly to contemporary chic, Pelipal® bathroom collections offer high quality design at an affordable price point. For the higher end of the market, the company offers Artiqua with luxury features such as Bose sound systems, polished concrete basins, high gloss lacquer cabinets and LED lighting. oper Rhodes has stepped into a new area with R2, a contemporary brand that targets the independent retail market. Aimed at more cost conscious consumers who want quality modern design at value for money prices, the new range includes a combination of modular and fitted contemporary furniture accompanied by sanitaryware, taps, cabinets, worktops, brassware and mirrors. There are six ranges in the collection – Ninety, Contour, Whisper, Drive, Muse and Liberty. Ninety is a modern, linear style in four finishes. Contour, as its name suggests, has softly rounded corners and is available in Anthracite or White Gloss. This range includes wash units in 600 and 700mm sizes with stylish slim profile ceramic basins to match. Whisper is an elegant 700mm curve fronted wash unit in Anthracite or White Gloss with complementary ceramic basin. A matching mirror cabinet is available. The reduced depth Drive range is the perfect choice for smaller spaces and comes in Dark Olive, Light Olive, Anthracite and White Gloss. Continued consumer interest in fitted furniture is served by the Muse and Liberty ranges. Muse is a slab door style ideal for creating wall to wall layouts. It is available in Walnut and White Gloss. Liberty can be used in a similar way and, like Muse, is available in standard and slim depths so it is suitable for large and small bathrooms and for cloakrooms. Design options within the Muse and Liberty ranges include Strata solid surface worktops, laminate tops and clad on panels for creating a framed look. The panels can also be used to fit small voids when a wall to wall look is being created. R2 is a very well thought out collection that covers all the bases to give a true one stop source of supply that includes furniture, sanitaryware, brassware and lighting. There’s a dedicated 68 page priced brochure for the range which is packed with high quality photography to inspire consumers. Nothing has been forgotten or overlooked. made from quality materials with soft close doors and drawers. Brassware is all made from top grade brass with excellent chrome plating and is suitable for use with all plumbing systems. Mirrors feature LED or backlit illumination and are IP44 rated for safe use in the bathroom. Simon Taylor, Marketing Director for the Roper Rhodes Group is optimistic about R2. “Our studies identified a gap within the furniture offers of independent bathroom retailers for good value yet high quality items. They needed products that would appeal to those customers who were being lost to other specialist multiple bathroom outlets. The R2 brand allows these retailers to compete once again at this level. “Initial response has been staggering and we already have over 700 R2 outlets on board, with more being added every day. We intend to repay this support by investing heavily in product development. There are already well-progressed plans to expand the offer with more great value products coming in 2012.” R2 is backed by the same level of customer service as all the brands in the Roper Rhodes stable from initial placement of the order through to delivery. 01225 303900 www.r2bathrooms.co.uk

athroom furniture and big sanitaryware manufacturers have not always been the most comfortable of bedfellows but the serendipitous combination of becoming the owners of Burg and realising that furniture is now a must have in most bathrooms has given VitrA a definite advantage. Shift and T4 have been well received by the market and by consumers – and are part of the overall VitrA view that offering choice is the road to success. “Customers are looking for style and individuality and for product ranges that offer them solutions in terms of size and shape as well,“ says VitrA’s Darren Paxford. “Storage is now an essential factor that needs to be considered. Bathroom furniture must be designed to complement and be in harmony with main bathroom products. This is particularly the case with storage under basins” There’s certainly no shortage of choice within the Shift range as there are 160 furniture units available in White, Zebrano, textured Mountain Larch and Anthracite Grey. The style is simple, contemporary and uncluttered – and pricing is at the affordable end of the scale. Further up the market VitrA offers T4 furniture which is mainly wall mounted and available in a choice of finishes. 01235 750990 www.vitrabathroomhelp.co.uk

pace saving options have always been high on the agenda for Utopia, especially for smaller bathrooms and for cloakrooms. The company has increased its offering of cloakroom units in both the Timber and Modular collections, extending the appeal of these popular styles. New 450 and 500mm cloakroom units have been introduced as part of the wall hung Timber Collection – an important extension to this range which previously started with 600mm widths. The new units come complete with the new Quantum Square Elegant washbasin. Utopia’s new Encurva range of Modular bathroom furniture also includes 450 and 500mm units, both featuring a curve at the bottom of the door. The compact 450mm cloakroom unit is teamed with the new Quantum Square Elegant cloakroom basin while the large size Quantum Square Elegant basin is used with the 500mm unit. “Our sales figures demonstrate that these space saving solutions are crucially important with many consumers opting for these units in main bathrooms as well as en suites and cloakrooms,” says Marketing Director Helen Clark. “The new Timber and Modular options significantly extend our offer in this important area.” 01902 406402 www.utopiagroup.com

Basins can be wall hung and have optional towel rails or half or full pedestals. They can also be used on a counter top. The range includes a selection of short projection models for smaller bathrooms. “We have to be able to offer a complete family of products within a collection,” says Darren Paxford of VitrA UK. “Cloakroom models are included to match styling in the main bathroom or en suite. There is a dedicated T4 basin tap for this range.” Carrying on the family theme is the affordable and versatile S20 range. Launched at ISH, this range is designed to dovetail with the best selling S50 collection and the combination of the two is being launched as S-Line.”The uptake of S20 has been nothing short of phenomenal,” says Darren Paxford. “With S20 added to the S50 as an S-Line range we are now offering retailers the chance to compete at any price level with the most flexible and versatile product range available.” S20 includes basins from 45cm to 65cm in 5cm increments with half or full pedestal. RAK goes rimless D New WC’s from RAK include super hygienic rimless designs and models with extended projections for wheelchair users.
uring the last ten years the bathroom market has seen huge changes in legislation – especially in relation to WC’s. Customer demand for improved looks and value, combined with changing standards for products in the health care market and for the less able have created new areas of potential. In response, importers like RAK have introduced a variety of new products to satisfy demand from both the general consumer and specialist sectors. Options within RAK’s Compact range include close coupled, back to wall and wall hung WC’s in standard, mini, extended height and full access formats. All models have a fluid, contemporary design and soft-close wrap over seat as standard. Compact close coupled hands free options are also available and feature Cistermiser sensor controlled water management systems. There are also models with hidden cisterns and support mechanisms. A wide choice of complementary basins is available in the Compact range. The choice includes full pedestal, half pedestal and semi recessed designs in 45 and 55cm formats as well as corner and slim line models. Two inclusive designs which feature no overflow basins are available in 38 and 50cm formats. In addition to the Compact range other RAK bathroom ranges include Series 600, Metropolitan, Empire, Evolution, Reserva, Summit, Opulence and Infinity.

WHY RIMLESS? Innovations from RAK include the introduction of various WCs with a new rimless design. Part of RAK’s Compact range, the new WRAS approved design complies with the Department of Health’s HTM64 Standard and eliminates the need for a hidden rim or channel where germs and bacteria can collect. Unlike toilets where germs can proliferate under the rim, the whole surface is open so the flush water cascades directly over the pan. This makes the toilet much easier to clean and eliminates the need to try and direct cleaning products under the rim. The new design is available in a variety of formats with compact models proving especially popular with hygiene conscious consumers – especially those with young families or elderly relatives. Three new extended projections are available for wheelchair users and come in both back to wall and close coupled designs.

TOP TIPS FOR ACCESSIBLE DESIGN Being safe from the danger of scalding is especially important to partially sighted people who may have difficulty in seeing shower or tap controls. Some of the latest shower valves from Inta have been developed in conjunction with experts from the RNIB and have proven anti-scald technology. Products are TMV2 and TMV3 rated and compliant with G3 legislation. Shown here is the exposed Vista sequential control shower. 0870 220 9666
● Accessible does not have to mean DOC M style products. There are many mainstream items that are ideal for less able people. ● Older people with knee or back trouble will find a low WC difficult to use. There are taller models available - specifically from Imperial and Laufen or choose wall hung and mount at a height on the wall to suit the user. ● Grab rails need not be ugly. Kaldewei’s loop shaped floor mounted bath grab is ideal for helping people in and out of the tub. The Freeline range from German manufacturer Sam is one of the best – and most stylish – on the market.

Horror stories about care homes and carers have made older consumers even more determined to stay in their own homes if possible. An accessible bathroom can help to make this dream a reality.
A new rise and fall hinge from Eurocare allows shower doors to remain open at 90 degrees in either direction without swinging back into the showering area - important for users who may be slow getting in and out. The hinge has been designed to be screwed directly into the tray, which speeds the installation process. The new door upgrade also includes an advanced seal on the bottom of the door that directs water away and back into the tray or drainage area. The hinge was redeveloped in consultation with Eurocare customers and designed specifically with appearance in mind. Concealed within a smooth, modern exterior, the hinge has no hazardous catches or operating devices and remains flush when in the closed position. Every Eurocare shower door is made to measure to customer specification and the company can cater for almost any application. 01302 788684

● Don’t forget the details. Lighting needs to be clear and free from shadows if possible. Ideally the floor should not be slippery when wet. A heated towel rail adds to the comfort factor. ● Always be safe. Thermostatic showers and bath taps and a comfort zone setting on basin taps will avoid the danger of scalding. ● A walk in shower is accessible to all – but not all elderly people like showering. For those who don’t, a reputable supplier of walk in baths such as Eurocare will provide well designed products and an installation service - see pages 28 and 29 for more details. ● If you install a walk in shower, don’t forget a seat. The seat can be either freestanding or wall mounted – but make sure the customer has tried it out for comfort first. ● Walk in showers can be installed directly to a tiled, drained floor or on to a level access tray. The level access tray is the least complicated option. ● A bath seat makes life easier, especially if combined with a grab rail on the side of the wall by the bath. The bath bench from Croydex is comfortable and easy to use. It will fit most standard baths and has soft caps on the arms so that it will stay in place.

oncaster based Eurocare Showers has a golden opportunity for retailers to become involved in the elderly and less able market without the hassle. Accessible bathing has become a more familiar feature of mainstream UK bathrooms over the last few years with more people than ever turning to the high street for an accessible solution that meets their needs. With so much demand why are so many retailers still shying away from accessible bathing? The answer lies in the perceived hassle and complication of sourcing and installing the right products - which is where Eurocare comes in. Eurocare has a brilliant new initiative which will help more retailers to become involved in this fast growing and lucrative sector. Historically the provision of accessible bathing products has been daunting for retailers who see it as a specialist area. In reality only a very small percentage of the domestic retail market requires a specialist bathing solution. The majority of demand comes from the over 65’s - a group that is growing year on year as average life expectancy in the UK continues to increase. A low level shower or a walk in bath will provide a suitable, cost effective solution that will cater for the majority of people’s needs within this sector. Design has also moved forward significantly in recent years with a wide variety of products that are practical as well as aesthetically pleasing. So what remains as the issue for retailers? Current research indicates that when it comes to accessible bathing, consumers look for a supplier who can deliver a complete service from design to installation. This is the difficulty for many retailers who may not have installation capacity. Installation can also be difficult - another area that retailers would rather avoid. This apprehension is not groundless, says Eurocare. Installing a low threshold bath or shower is not the same as installing a standard domestic shower or bath. There are a number of factors that must be taken into consideration if products are to be installed properly and perform correctly. A good survey is an essential part of the installation process and can eliminate unforeseen problems and additional costs.

ade easy Working with a reputable expert who can ensure products are suitable for purpose and correctly installed first time provides retailers with an opportunity that is too good to miss. With over 35 years of experience in the design and manufacture of assistive equipment and a proven track record in facilitating installation, Eurocare is that expert. In early 2012, Eurocare will launch a brand new initiative that will allow retailers the opportunity to offer a complete turnkey solution. Eurocare will provide a complete service to their retail customers from manufacture to installation. How will the process work? Retailers will handle their own sale and remain in control at all times while Eurocare takes care of the product and the installation. Acting on behalf of the retailer at all times, Eurocare can even offer full product branding. Those joining the scheme will be provided with a full menu of installed product prices. The two tier pricing structure will allow retailers to provide customers with a realistic idea of cost. Although prices are subject to a pre installation survey, retailers can be assured that they are receiving the best possible price direct from the manufacturer. What about retailers who have installation capacity but no knowledge of accessible bathing? No problem - Eurocare offers a range of training options from sales and technical to full product installation. The company operates a non compete policy with all customers and only sells to the trade. Eurocare offers the widest selection of accessible door, screen and enclosure options in the UK. All products are manufactured to customer requirements. The company also offers a stunning selection of walk in baths which set new standards in quality and ease of use. All products are manufactured in the UK. If you are interested in the new initiative, email Sales and Marketing Manager Joanna Talbot at jo@eurocare-showers.com

Launch success for Utopia New displays of I-line, Symmetry and Encurva furniture from Utopia are attracting consumer attention in showrooms. Reaction to the product launch has been exceptional - as Mark Bailey, Sales Director at Utopia explains. “Some of our retailers who had attended the launch felt compelled to email or write in expressing their thanks and congratulating us. A similar message was received by one of our retailers recently. Staff at Master Bathrooms in Rickmansworth arrived at work to find a letter through the door from a lady who walked past the showroom every day on her way to work. She put the letter through the door the morning after a brand new Utopia Symmetry display had been unveiled in the window and felt compelled to say how good it looked and how it was great to see a retailer with a positive approach in the current climate.” Danny Garraway of Master Bathrooms said it was fantastic to find the letter. “We put a lot of time and effort into creating this window display, so to receive acknowledgement makes it all worthwhile. The display has created quite a stir with passers by coming in to see the rest of the showroom. “
