Dialogue of color and structure When light, precious wooden structures in interpretations full of character meet monochromatic color surfaces, fascinating dialogues are formed: futuristic wooden decorative elements have experienced a natural transformation, which are notably design-oriented. Contrasting this, there are monochromatic surfaces harmonizing the composition with a skilful choice of color - in this way a relation, a dialogue between color and structure is achieved. www.hornschuch.com skai速 is a trademark of Konrad Hornschuch AG

he Schattdecor display booths keep wowing audiences at exhibitions around the world, presenting the striking designs and textural realism to a global customer market. The current trend décors 2010/2011, titled “For All, For Us, For Me”, provides insights into how people will be fitting out their homes in future, and offers answers to questions concerning the home furnishings of tomorrow. The unprecedented array of new décor variations are complemented by perfectly matching melamine and foil surface effects in finishes ranging from matt to full gloss. Under the motto “see - touch - feel” Schattdecor is exploring surface effects in new and innovative ways with its Smartfoil and Postfoil product lines that offer visual or textural threedimensional finishes. The company has also produced four digital-print décor paper studies, “Glimmer”, “Urban”, “Lightboard” and “Giant Wood”, as part of the Digital VISION series, exploring the possibilites of digital printing. The latter design has already won the Arena TOP DESIGN Award in Poland, providing further inspiration to the design team headed by Claudia Küchen.
10183 Sonoma Eiche 10183 Sonoma Eiche Developed in response to the demand for rough-sawn wood in a rustic 3D look, Sonoma Oak offers negative pores, square-cut saw marks and the crossfires typical of oak. Restrained planking and balanced and highlyeffective colouration are further characteristics of note.
20157 Noce Dozuki 20157 Noce Dozuki Generously-sized crotch figures and broad planking characterise this walnut décor, whereby a pearlescent sheen subtly underscores the natural look. The balanced colouration will enable Noce Dozuki to be produced in a variety of colourways.
54078 Vesuv
54078 Vesuv This true-to-the-original reproduction is based on delicately-structured volcanic rock in which irregular diagonal lines further underscore the natural impression. At the same time, the slightly open-pored look yields an interesting 3D effect. A décor in line with contemporary tastes, Vesuv is particularly suited for kitchen worktops and walls and cabinet carcases.

the winning look With skai® Avola Hornschuch created a charismatic, highly structured new wood surface. By blurring the boundaries between a wood finish and an invented wood type, it practically establishes a new material category. skai® Avola’s 3D character gives the reassuring tactile appeal of a soft wood. Four fascinating colours offer a number of combination possibilities. Shown right is skai® Avola Cream White.
rom trend setter to best seller, skai® Avola’s dominant appearance definitely sets the tone. Its imaginative interpretation of wood clearly shows character. The contrast relaxing, the structure stimulating, its ease of combinability with a wide palette of plain colours allows a world of possibilities. The use of texture brings out a 3D character, without being too deep or intensive. With each Avola décor containing hints of grey, it is ensuring numerous combination possibilities with the new skai® Mussel, Dakar or Reed unicolour décors. Wonderfully smooth, matt, lacquered – skai ® colore opaco surface design from Hornschuch combines all three traits in unparalleled perfection. The innovative surface features a genuine super matt lacquer layer as even and pure as a frosted champagne bottle. skai® colore opaco answers the clear trend towards frosted matt surfaces that is now becoming apparent after a long phase of highly glossy furniture surfaces. Cream White Avola adds a definitive touch of nobility to classic lifestyles. The brightness of its colour lights up the room, its unique structure is simply irresistible. The Hornschuch trend setting décor is first class for premium living spaces.
skai® colore opaco is an innovative fashionable matt lacquer surface with superior polished lacquer look and velvety feel. It creates pleasant and stylish living spaces. The product offers outstanding impact strength for years of use on the exposed front surfaces of furniture. The bedroom shown below features skai® colore opaco Black and skai® colore opaco Titan White.
skai® colore opaco has superb built-in 3D workability. All 3D designs can be accurately recreated during the manufacturing process without the high-quality lacquer layer of the film changing at all. What is more, the risk of irregularities such as “runners” or “inlets“ in complex 3D structures is averted by the use of skai® opaco. The picture shows the great versatility of colore opaco. The 3D design in Smooth White colour matches elegantly with colore modo Malaga and noce Dijon Limousin.

inspiring contrasts in décor Surface design becomes dynamic when powerful roughness meets formal lightness: In line with current interior trends, the themes of the new Interprint décors range from saw-cut look to pearwood elegance.
The primary colours at the Milan Furniture Fair in May were from the colour spectrum “yellow/beige/brown/grey/white”.
M
ore profile, depth and emotion: many furniture surfaces at the large trade fairs in Cologne and Milan showed strong character. Within the scope of the 'Milan Review', the colour and shape trends of the season were presented with the latest Interprint décors at a photo session at the Design Post Cologne. Eye catchers are currently rough, almost cracked wood structures in a 'Back to Nature' trend because they emphasise the sensuality of the material. A major feature is that they form an exciting counterweight to minimalistic interior design with smooth surfaces and reduced shapes. Interprint has dedicated a new line for this current trend in a collection featuring décors with a saw-cut look. The 'Walk the Line' oak décor radiates rough charm and the 'Cimba Oak' décor also confidently shows the imperfections of its saw-cut look. White continues to be a major trend colour, especially for kitchens. 'Santino' represents a further trendsetting décor in the collection with which Interprint once again brings the most important furnishing themes into focus. Surfaces with striking features are not the only trend that promises success for the next season: the always-popular harmonious structures, like ‘Pera Padua’ stand in visual contrast. 0049 2392 9500 www.interprint.com

FURNITURE JOURNAL DESIGN AND DECORS SUPPLEMENT NOVEMBER 2010 • 7 The 'Walk the Line' oak décor radiates rough charm. The saw cuts in this décor run across the grain of the solid wood. The surface shows fine, gentle lines despite this roughness. The elegant effect is supported by a waxed and oiled look that brings both light and dark colours to the fore. As striking furniture fronts in dark colours, 'Walk the Line' forms an exciting contrast to smooth surfaces or light soft upholstery.
“With cold metallic elements, this décor shows power and naturalness.”
White continues to be a major trend colour, especially for kitchens. The 'Santino' stone décor conjures up nobility on worktops, furniture fronts and floors through its light clarity. The quiet surface becomes interesting due to a rough grain that also produces a depth effect.
“Against such a light backdrop, contrasting furniture and accessories harmonise well.”
The 'Cimba Oak' décor confidently shows the imperfections of its saw-cut look. Open pores, sawcut roughness and irregular structures give the décor a striking grain. A slight liming of the saw cuts strengthens the 3-D effect. 'Cimba Oak' offers good combination possibilities with glass, plastic and stainless steel, especially in the dark colour range.
“It's a structure that goes very well with today's trendy large-size furniture.”
'Pera Padua' is a new décor in Interprint's pearwood collection. A décor for a feeling of well-being, the stripes, flowery swirls and light lines combine elegantly. The décor can be used in almost any room of the home. In the light colour range, 'Pera Padua' surprises by its filigree lightness.
“The décor gives furniture fronts and bodies an unobtrusive, modern feel.”

WARSAW Warsaw has a dreamy feeling, natural, spiritual and homey. Tradition is cultivated, historical assets appreciated. Brown, ochre and green tones create a warm, pleasant mood. The structures are modern and fresh and unaffectedly graceful. Romantic corners, the historical market square and horse-drawn carriages all contrast with the striking architecture of the Palace of Culture.
THE WARSAW COLLECTION Classic, light furniture woods form the basis of the collection. A cheerful, natural mood emerges. An open space in terms of colour and structure that leaves plenty of room for individual design.
O
ne of the core challenges for the industry in the years to come is the worldwide trend towards high-value, discerning designs. As the world grows increasingly together both the international trends as well as the individual desires and dreams of the customers need to be understood and taken seriously. The seven cities concept The impress Design Concept 2010 develops an inspiring world of colours, structures, and combinations which convince in their multitude and attractiveness. The points of origin are the many production sites of the company: Frankfurt, Berlin, Warsaw, Barcelona, Vienna, Moscow, and Curitiba. Influences from these cities enrich the collection and are a guarantee for an internationally-valid design statement. An exploration of this design world awakens a desire for style and creativity. hen it comes to the laminate vs real wood debate, Polyrey’s new Origine Premier range has an extremely compelling case. The 41strong range of wood grain laminates has harnessed the very latest techniques in high definition printing and surface textures to produce an outstanding effect. The range of laminates combine beautiful aesthetics, colour consistency and workability in such ways that can arguably surpass that of natural timber. Origine Premier has been especially developed to mirror the beauty of real wood through sophisticated printing techniques rather than recourse to harvesting and slicing veneers. Print accuracy not only perfectly replicates the graining of the timber specie but also guarantees colour consistency of the product across each and every sheet of laminate. This dispenses with the need for book matching veneers and selecting product for acceptable colour tolerances, a distinct advantage when producing runs of furniture or shopfitting a project. Polyrey has produced an easy reference binder showcasing the new effects and A4 size samples are available on a next day delivery service from Polyrey’s Sample Line. 01923 202700 polyrey.uk@polyrey.com www.polyrey.com
The Origine Premier range is perfect for furniture manufacturers due to the laminates being very flexible to work with and requiring no finishing.
Polyrey’s Origine Premier offers an expansive palette with natural colour tones and woodgrains covering all major species in design orientated effects.

FINSA - world leaders in board products
T
he Spanish multi-national group FINSA are at the forefront of developing and supplying cutting edge wood-based board products for a fast developing market with the aim of providing fit-for-purpose solutions at every level. FINSA, headquartered in Spain, have factories across the Iberian peninsular as well as in France, the USA, Ireland and South Africa. In the UK FINSA's base is well established at Birkenhead on Merseyside for the last 15 years where extensive stocks for nationwide distribution are held. They also have an appointed network of distributors and suppliers. Shown here is a snapshot of four of FINSA's specialised products - there are many more. They also have a world-leading laminate flooring division under the FAUS brand with exclusive technologies for unique products. All products are supported with full technical literature and by a highly trained sales staff. FINSA UK 0151 651 2400 uk@finsa.es
FINSA manufacture their IBERPAN range of MDF using a steam injection pressing system (SIPS) and a high frequency pressing system (HFPS) both exclusive to FINSA. This process ensures the best quality results with a smoother surface for profiling and lacquering. FINSA can offer IBERPAN in thicknesses ranging from 36mm right through to 70mm.
FINlight - a star in FINSA's lightweight division Developed for applications requiring both thick but low weight boards, it offers a significant reduction in weight for large area/volume sheets while maintaining excellent stability and working properties. Essentially FINlight is composed of two faces of Fibranor (thin MDF) with the core layer made of Iberpan 300 (300kg/m2 density) MDF. It can be cut, edged, postformed and shaped on standard machinery and will accept all standard fittings.
Superpan the super substrate Unique to FINSA through an exclusive manufacturing process, Superpan is the latest generation substrate that offers a variety of specific solutions. Effectively it is a chipboard core sandwiched between two sheets of MDF that not only give a superb quality bonding base, but add stability and structural strength to the board. Superb for the new high gloss and photo-realistic dĂŠcors and far less expensive than solid MDF.
DM.COMPAQ1100 - the alternative to solid laminate An advanced board solution exclusive to FINSA, DM.COMPAQ1100 is a technically high grade, high density fibreboard (HDF) bonded with moisture resistant synthetic resins. DM.COMPAQ1100 is ideal for around 70% of the present applications for solid laminate but costs between 35% to 40% less. High technical specification makes it ideal for public area applications in hospitals, education, toilet cubicles, locker rooms and more. It is easily machined and not as abrasive on tooling as solid laminate.

“Light and fresh while its dense grain gives it a discreet depth.”
atural Touch is a cut above the orthodox, using the tactile beauty of real timber with the consistency and environmental benchmark that is only achievable using a manufactured board. Innovative investment in a cutting-edge process has enabled Kronospan and its sister company, Kaindl, to develop breathtaking faced boards that allow the fingertips to trace exactly what the eyes see. By precisely synchronising the surface structure to perfectly match the image of the wood grain below,
Natural Touch demonstrate real physical depth. The result is an exquisite organic texture that is prefinished, extremely durable, easy to work with, and has a consistency of colour and grain that is impossible to replicate with veneer or timber. innovus is coming Sonae Industria will start the new year with a brand new range of 150 décors.
I
n line with Sonae Industria’s strategy of providing the widest range of decorative products in the market, January 2011 will see the launch of a brand new European range. The range consists of 150 décors, many of which are new to the UK, and will be available in melamine-faced chipboard, high pressure and compact laminate. In addition, complementary matching edging tapes and lacquered MDF will also be available. Dave Chapman, Sales and Marketing Director for the UK, said: “We have listened to the design community and our customer base and developed a range that is comprehensive and easy to use. Put simply, it’s a new way to create”. The Innovus range will initially be available in the UK, Benelux, France and Germany from stock. This gives the design and distribution community real flexibility in delivering to their clients the most up-to-date décors with the shortest lead times in the widest range of products. The new website, www.innovus.co (yes, .co) has been developed with design in mind. It gives the user the ability to create “mood boards” and
download images into cad systems. Technical specification sheets can be saved and linked to tender documents. If you’re a specifier, designer or architect, Innovus will make your life easier. You can also use the website to generate individual documents that can be emailed directly to customers with all the information you have saved and designs you have created. To complement the website, the complete range of Innovus products can be viewed in the new look design folder on hand at all Sonae Industria UK distributors or come and experience the Innovus Centre based at the Knowsley site. The 2000 sq.ft centre comprises a multimedia area, décor gallery, meeting and lecture facilities. Watch out for the 10 new vehicles rolling out of Knowsley in January 2011, proudly bringing the new Innovus brand to you. Innovus is innovation by design and ultimately, a new way to create. Why don’t you contact Sonae Industria’s commercial office on 0151 545 4000 and arrange a visit to the Innovus Centre where you can enjoy the Innovus experience.

o professional shopfitters, 21st century ‘shopfitting’ means much more than just shops. Any interior, be it retail, financial services, leisure, hotels, restaurants, museums or travel, demands a high level of skill and innovation, and shopfitting and interior contracting continues to change at a rapid pace. Smart professionals combine traditional skills with modern technology and technical expertise to meet design demands, and when designers push boundaries, new and innovative materials are needed. FSC certified and locally manufactured in Ireland by Coillte Panel Products, SmartPly OSB is not only precision engineered and offers sustainability, strength and performance - elements all vital to the success of any project - but also a unique visual aesthetic. This is being discovered as a design solution for it offers a modern take on traditional or rural concepts and is being seen in its raw form more and more often. Leading MDF brand Medite is also part of Coillte Panel Products division, and provides a wide range of diverse FSC certified products, from Medite FR (flame retardant) to Medite Ecologique, which contains no added formaldehyde, making it perfect for particularly sensitive applications such as museum interiors. The launch of Coillte Panel Products’ brand new range of thicker Medite MDF panels has unlocked a fantastic array of new applications, specifications and uses. Medite’s ongoing major programme of investment recently enabled the development and launch of much thicker FSC certified and CARB 2 compliant Medite, with the range topping out at an impressive 45mm. The maximum thickness of Medite MDF previously available was 30mm, but Medite’s new technology has enabled their MDF panels to be manufactured thicker than ever before, and Medite Premier is now available in thicknesses of 32, 36, 38, 40, 42 and 45mm. www.medite-europe.com www.smartply.com
Australian architect Matt Gibson designed a shop interior for the fashion retailer Fame Agenda, in the Docklands of Melbourne, Australia. A random and organic set of arches merge to form a cave-like enclosure with the OSB creating a strong visual statement, and when new functional-design driven fashion store Magazin-Zing opened in Moscow, the store featured OSB panels and furniture, making a fresh and unusual statement.
Whether a design is inspired by the countryside or requires an industrial edge, OSB is being specified and used for wall and floor covering, sanded and treated to a smooth finish for fitted furniture and display shelving, or as a solid base for portable garment racks and rails. Combining OSB with raw concrete and steel and exposed functions completes industrial designs, and combinations of OSB with glass and gloss surfaces brings warmth to stark contemporary finishes.
New shopfitting recently undertaken by FatFace, the active lifestyle clothing and accessories retailer, and Timberland, which offers rugged, outdoor-tested, environmentally-conscious gear, have drawn on the natural appearance of OSB, creating interiors which reflect outdoor environments. The Body Shop, clothing brand H&M, and even top retailer John Lewis have also turned to OSB to create exciting, visually appealing and environmentally responsible fit-outs in their stores.
As part of the new interior specification of its store in Vallée Village in Marne-laVallée, France, Café Coton, who sell topof-the-range shirts and accessories for men, chose FSC certified Medite FR flame-retardant MDF for their interior display shelving and furniture.

t last there’s a gloss that meets not only all of the domestic requirements for scratch resistance but even the present FIRA 6250 PART 3 (severe) and BS 6222 Contract scratch tests. Huddersfield-based Decorative Panels Group is offering six new gloss woodgrains that are so scratch resistant that the two previously mentioned tests are simply not stringent enough to give a realistic impression of their capabilities and the six décors represent the sure-fire bestsellers for 2011. The result is a collection of six woodgrains in a range called Select that has scratch resistance to satisfy kitchen, bedroom, hotel, contract and shopfitting applications.
This month also sees the launch of a brand new high gloss acrylic unicolour design ”Khaki Grey”; this increases the Decorative Panels stock range of Senoplast unicolour high gloss acrylics to ten. These are laminated as standard onto MDF with short lead times of 10-14 days for direct delivered orders. Decorative Panels are also working in partnership with a number of carefully selected distributors who can supply the full range of high gloss products in low volumes as either full sheets or cut and edged panels. For further information on their product range or their distribution partners please contact the Sales department on 01481 658341 or visit their new website at www.decorativepanels.co.uk

new, innovative edge banding is now available from MKT and their UK representative and distributor Decoredge Ltd. Alpha-Tape®laser has been specially developed for the laser edging process. Based on the environmentally safe Alpha-Tape®PP edging, it features a special functional layer that eliminates the need for standard bonding agents or adhesives in the processing stages. The functional layer is melted by a diode, or CO2 laser beam, directly joining it to the work piece. Thanks to the colour matching between the functional layer, the top layer of the edge banding and the board, Alpha-Tape®laser provides an invisible, homogeneous and seamless transition between edge and board. Alpha-Tape®laser offers unrivalled aesthetics in furniture design and MKT edges in the laser-edging process are now available for all measurements. MKT, Germany 0049 (0) 3624 36923 info@mkt-gmbh.com Decoredge, UK 01204 652533 enquiries@decoredge.com
Ageing and wear marks are now things of the past. The special polymer functional layer in Alpha-Tape®laser significantly enhances the robustness and usability of the furniture. Dirt and moisture cannot penetrate the functional layer and the heat resistance is greatly improved.
Further benefits • Costly coordination of edge material, bonding agent and adhesive is no longer necessary. • Much lower cleaning costs for the edged boards. • Eliminates waiting times and set-up costs for colour change. • Significant improvement in machine ability, due to the high material hardness of the functional layer.

ilsonart International has invested over £1.4 million in a new state-of-the-art edge banding line at its worktop plant in Shildon, County Durham. The growing trend towards different edge treatments has resulted in the introduction of a specialist new product range incorporating a new Dual-Tone ABS edging. The sharp, thin, linear lines seen in today’s kitchen market are brought to life with this uniquely designed edge. The innovative combination of 2 décors in 1 allows the worktop to effortlessly blend into the edging, while the contrasting décor creates the appearance of a much thinner worktop. Using a material that is both durable and versatile Dual-Tone ABS edging adds a new dimension to worktops; without compromising quality. In addition various edging combinations offer increased flexibility across an extensive range of laminate worktops, maximising the design solution. 01388 770108 www.wilsonart.co.uk
