Polyrey laminates are fully PEFC certified and Formica Ltd have recently gained FSC accreditation on all plain colour laminates and more than 75% of their laminate designs. Resopal, Arpa and Woodlam laminates are available on a made-to-order basis. IDS has held full FSC and PEFC certification for products since 2003, and over 80% of the company’s timber-based products are available with environmental certification. IDS has 12 branches nationwide and ex-stock delivery is within 48 hours across the UK.

Karl Twyford has been appointed as the Sales and Marketing Manager for Magi-Cut Software, based in Bristol. Karl’s responsibilities include helping customers with the choice of the best panel optimisation system, to add efficiency to production processes when working with sheet materials. Jim Wiltshire, MD, said that Karl’s extensive knowledge has expanded their presence in the industry, meeting the new Express software’s needs for bold marketing initiatives around the web and industry publications.

business news Bushboard has appointed Steve Ball as the National Training Manager. His task will be to establish a formally approved network of installers recognised within the industry, who can be recommended to customers. Over 2,500 installers have already been trained to date, showing the success of the installer-ready worksurfaces in M-Stone quartz and Encore solid surfaces. Steve will focus on training across the UK and at the free sessions at Bushboard’s Wellingborough showroom and training centre. He said that both product ranges are without doubt the growth materials of the future, offering significant benefits with growing sales. Schattdecor took the opportunity to listen to Spanish and Portuguese designers when they repeated last year’s successful trend forum at the company’s headquarters in Germany. Freelance furniture designers from the Iberian Peninsula were invited to share ideas and news of successes in the spirit of partnership. A presentation on Schattdecor’s current trend concept to address and explore the designers’ viewpoints was followed by an ideas gathering session where décors most suited to the southern market were chosen to include in the company’s new trend flyer. All concerned agreed that the twoday forum was a success and further events are planned in the coming years.

The Xylexpo exhibition in May 2014 is welcoming back the Biesse Group, after an absence of the last two exhibitions. Biesse announced the decision a few days after their return into Acimall, the association of Italian wood technology manufacturers, and said that “it will be an important opportunity for visitors and customers to discover the ultimate advantage of Biesse solutions in terms of machines, integrated production lines and software”. The Milan-based biennial world exhibition for woodworking technology and components for the furniture industry will run from 13th to 17th May 2014. Dario Corbetta, Acimall deputy manager, said that it would be a great sign of unity and shared intent for made in Italy and Acimall would do all they could to make Xylexpo 2014 a credible showcase for the Italian industry.

great for gloss J

ust ahead of ZOW 2014, adhesives specialist, Kleiberit, has launched its new grade 431.7, a PU dispersion spray adhesive to bond PVC decorative foil to moulded MDF panels. After the regular application of the adhesive the MDF panel, and following a recommended 20-30 mins natural drying time - or 5-10 mins through an oven - the panels are then processed through a vacuum-heated press which uses a membrane or air press to form the PVC foil onto the shape of the material. According to Kleiberit, the advantages and benefits of the FIRA certificated 431.7 formula offers tangible value to manufacturers: for instance, it is a one-component formula - no more mixing or waste after shifts, no more cleaning spray lines or disposal of cleaning liquid waste. This, of course, leaves more time to produce panels, saving money and improving productivity. The new formulation also allows for continuous spraying without having to stop and clean spray nozzles,

which again creates less down time and more productivity options. In addition, the new 431.7 formula can be sprayed with nozzle sizes of 1.2-1.8mm and the lay down finish is said to be absolutely smooth. For panels faced with high gloss foils where a first class optical finish without defects is important, this is a significant benefit. With the smaller nozzle sizes there is less overspray which means the adhesive sprayed is utilised on the panel and not wasted, therefore saving money. The 431.7 formulation is easy to use, requiring only 50°C to reactivate this adhesive. The lower pre-warming temperature results in an enhanced finish for high gloss foils as well as prolonging the life of silicone or rubber membranes. After cross-linking, a high heat resistance is achieved - Kleiberit says over 100°C in some cases. To find out more about the new formula and discuss the benefits of Kleiberit’s service, visit Hall 20, stand A44 at ZOW 2014 or call Kleiberit UK on 01530 836699.

Décor Selection 2014 Schattdecor's stunning start into the new décor year 20184_002 Noce Moscato

01060 Kodiak Pine

Trends are pointing in the direction of pale décors and chalked woodgrains in pine or larch, created for furnishings that recall the Scandinavian country house style. Taking its inspiration from European walnut material, Noce Moscato offers expansive figuring, small knots and a varied pore pattern. A chalked look and wire-brushed effect are further characteristics. Ceramic and graphic fragments form the basis of Fade. It is an attractive proposition whether in pronounced colourations or subdued pastel hues. Pearlescent inclusions or an opaque white effect offer interesting alternatives.

01044 Sibiu Larch Narrow figuring and faint saw marks in Kodiak Pine are skilfully combined in this accomplished take on the trend towards limed and white washed wood. The wire-brushed look adds a three-dimensional effect. The striking features of Sibiu Larch include alternating sections of densely-packed and wide-spaced grain and the realistic look of wire-brushed wood. Rustic knots and flame figures make it very lively in impression.

24039 Bengali Mango

Schattdecor is getting the new décor year off to a good start with its new Décor Selection 2014. The idea behind the selection is to evaluate trend forecasts, provide orientation and present décors that have the potential of becoming tomorrow's best-sellers. The Décor Selection thus focuses on décor highlights and trends for trail-blazing modern furniture design. Schattdecor hopes that its choices will provide inspiration for its worldwide customers and underscore its role in the coming year again as a reliable partner for successful trend forecasts. Please contact Schattdecor AG by phone 0049 (0) 8031 275-2779 or by email b.reuss@schattdecor.de 10269 Inverness Oak

10258 Brentwood Oak

The authentic look of woodgrain décors in natural hues remains much in demand. Oak in particular is creating a young and lively feel, suiting it for varied uses. Brentwood Oak is set apart from other oak designs by dark sapwood streaks. Features include small knots and slight cracks in the sidecut crotch figures. The wood has a very fine texture and small pores. Reminiscent of rustic old-growth wood, Inverness Oak is striking for a rough and sun-bleached appearance in which multiple small knots and fine cracks have their place. Various details in the weathered material show subtle signs of wear. Equally effective in strong woodgrain or pastellike nuances, Maracaibo is a typical full stave worktop décor that is given a vintage character by discolouration, paint remnants and motley colouring.

Colour is setting the tone in the new trend towards dark timber, as evidenced by different woodgrains in sombre hues for an effect of simple elegance.

26048 Maracaibo

10246 Salinas Oak

Based on a very fine-grained oak veneer with a highly natural look, Salinas Oak is predestined for a variety of applications thanks to its homogeneous composition. Subtle negative poring accentuates the pronounced fine pores, while closely-packed sections and side-cut crotch figures are to be found in the balanced layout. Faint cracks underscore the natural impression.

Generously-sized figuring and balanced colouration distinguish this Bengali Mango décor. Its outstanding feature, however, is its enormous potential for varied colourations ranging from elegant and warm brown hues to paler and powdered nuances. 10280 Cadbury Oak Cadbury Oak décor is typified by side-cut crotch figures and fine pores with a slightly chalked look. The growth lines provide a threedimensional touch and this décor is particularly effective in dark oaklike colourations. Taking its inspiration from European walnut material, Noce Moscato offers expansive figuring, small knots and a varied pore pattern. A chalked look and wire-brushed effect are further characteristics.

fter many months of research and development at Decorative Panels Lamination, dp-BioCote® Quartz is here and ready to clean up in the marketplace. Working as a partner company with BioCote®, Decorative Panels Lamination has launched a range of commercially available sheet materials that offers exceptional abrasion and antibacterial properties. The manufacturing process of the surface material and the addition of the BioCote® additive results in the surface being highly abrasion resistant - according to Decorative Panels, more so than a standard high pressure worktop. When tested against resistance to clinical cleaning products dp-BioCote ® Quartz provides excellent results in all areas. Testing the parameters with regards to wet and dry heat, as well as a number of liquids that commonly leave distinctive marks, the product also passes with flying colours.

g the bugs By including the BioCote® additive into the surface of the product dpBioCote® Quartz offers a surface which is up to 99.9% germ free, achieved by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, micro-organisms, fungi and mould. The surface is also protected against the growth of staining and odour-causing microbes which may prematurely degrade the material. Both in laboratory and real life conditions, BioCote® has been proven effective against a wide range of clinically significant bacteria including MRSA, MSSA, E.coli, Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeru-ginosa, Salmonella typhimurium and enteritidis, Listeria monocytogenes, VRE, Campylobacter and Novovirus. Tests have shown that within just 15 minutes microbial contamination has reduced by up to 80% and

that after two hours reductions of up to 99.9% can be expected. Very significantly, the BioCote® additive not only acts in minutes, it also works continuously and lasts a lifetime without degradation. dp-BioCote ® Quartz has been launched as a range of six décors: three popular woodgrains and three unicolours available for lamination across the extensive range of substrate materials available from Decorative Panels Lamination. Interest has proved very positive with market areas such as hospitals, health centres, schools, care homes, student accommodation, and of course office and contract furniture, all able to benefit. enolit Cramlington understands the importance of colour and is always introducing new up-to-date solid colours to their 3D stock range. An added effect is achieved with modern textured surfaces and the six colours illustrated here all benefit from the texture’s style, design and feeling. The Renolit Stock 3D range is split into two individual brands: • Renolit Covaren sets trends with the company’s premier 3D films. With new sophisticated surface structures, woodgrain is super-realistic, and the range of solid colours includes metallic effects as well as matt finishes. High gloss films complete the collection, available in many colours and brilliant décors. There are three variations of Nova, each with a semi-matt paint effect flat surface. Clockwise from left, Nova Light Cashmere, Nova Grey and Nova Tadold, the variations offer a co-ordinating palette of taupe, anthracite and cream respectively.

• Renolit Alkoren, in contrast, is a classic collection of woodgrains and solid colours. uthenic-looking untreated wood is one of the current hot topics in finishes, complete with knots, pronounced planking and saw cuts. Egger is meeting the trend for roughcut décors by following its successful Bardolino Oak décor with lighter and darker versions, H1145 ST10 Natural Bardolino Oak and H1158 ST10 Truffle Brown Bardolino Oak. Also making use of the complementary ST10 surface texture is the H1725 ST10 Sand Provencial Elm design, a décor that shows even a simple plain woodgrain like elm can work as an untreated wood surface.

To work on its own or in harmony with natural woodgrains, the new neutral solid colour U702 ST9 Cashmere has been introduced as part of the KBB sector’s move away from simple creams. Natural and muted tones, combined with natural woodgrains, are increasingly being used in furniture design and now often form the starting point for room schemes in the home. The new H1725 Sand Provencial Elm ably meets the current demand for authentic woodgrains even though elm is known as more of a simple, plain and elegant wood. Its natural features and the depth of the décor pattern realistically reflect an untreated wood surface.

such as aluminium. Keeping pace with such rapid development has been a challenge for adhesive companies, whose task has been to come up with new formulations that offer high initial strength and improved rheology to keep pace with machinery that, nowadays, can run at line speeds of up to 100 metres a minute. One company, Jowat, has been consistently at the cutting edge of the hotmelt technology that meets the high speed profile wrapping challenge. In fact, Jowat’s range contains several hotmelt products:

For conventional roller applications and slot nozzle lines, Jowatherm ® 291.60 meets a wide spectrum of adhesion. An EVA system supplied in granulate form, it’s designed for use with paper décor foils and facilitates a feed speed of between 20 and 80 metres per minute. For higher heat resistance (in excess of 110ºC), thermal stability in the melt and low grammages that promote smooth and efficient application, Jowat has developed its range of Toptherm® high performance adhesives based on polymer technology to supplement its tried and tested Jowat-Hightherm ® series. Among them, Jowat-Toptherm® 236.70 has become the standard product for wrapping with resinated paper décor foils, thermoplastic foils (with the corresponding reverse primer coating), CPL and veneers. Jowat-Toptherm® has been formulated for profile wrapping of solid wood, particleboard and MDF at processing temperatures of up to 200ºC.

When the very highest quality is required, the Jowat-Reaktant ® group offers adhesives which facilitate low application temperatures for difficult-tobond materials, such as when wrapping wood or plastic profiles with heavy resinated paper décor foils, CPL and HPL. Jowat-Reaktant ® is ideal where superior heat and moisture resistance are required in the finished product and, when application is by slot nozzle, Jowat is confident this adhesive will provide you with much reduced grammages. In addition to standard products, Jowat offers numerous special products which have been developed and optimised for use in quite specific profile wrapping applications. Such development work is a speciality area of Jowat’s in-house research and development team. If you have very different requirements which are not met by standard Jowatherm®, Hightherm® or Reaktant® products, call Jowat UK on 01782 565265 or visit www.jowat.co.uk

Above. Jowat has formulated a range of standard adhesives for profile wrapping solid wood, wood-based substrates, plastics and metals with a variety of décor foils and veneers but for specific applications, its inhouse R&D team is happy to work directly with individual manufacturers to solve specific adhesion problems.

New Year, New Logo. The new single logo replaces the previous logos of “Working with Wood” and “Working with Design” to reflect a new integrated exhibition that will address all the needs of UK manufacturers. Timber Expo will be co-located at the NEC this year, providing an even wider variety of materials on show.

Confidence is high for next October’s show as Blum return and major components and materials exhibitors set the stage amongst the big names in machinery.

hen fast moving design-led manufacturers come to a national exhibition they are choosing the technology, surfaces and components to give an advantage in a demanding marketplace. To achieve this they need to be able to see expertly displayed surfaces and components at a national exhibition. In the autumn of 2014 this will be possible at W14, the biennial UK event for joinery and furniture manufacturers. The large UK manufacturers are certain to attend W14 to see the latest in production methods and design possibilities. However, a new breed of design-led small manufacturers is increasingly using the exhibition to differentiate their products through design. London-based GMS Bespoke Joinery has built up a reputation for the manufacture and installation of top quality bespoke cabinets and joinery and has completed a wide range of prestigious projects for such clients as The Houses of Parliament, Harrods, Aspreys and Libertys. Chris Sheridan, director of GMS Joinery, is enthusiastic about the contribution to design in adding value, commenting, “Good material design in the surfaces we use is a key area of customer service for our sector and we are delighted to see W14 recognise the needs of manufacturers in this respect.” The clear demand to see the latest in materials and components alongside the technology at W14 is fully recognised by the industry. A glance at the packed W14 floor plan (www.w14exhibition.com) reveals a mass of key exhibitors already booked to appear at the show next October. BA Components, Blum, EMUCA, and Fixform Fittings, together with Isaac Lord, have all taken a substantial presence in recent weeks. W14 organisers

at W14 Huddlestone say that the time is right for this expansion of the event as economic prospects continue to brighten. Edward Quant, Commercial Director of David Clouting Ltd, which exhibited in 2012 and is back for W14, likes the show’s direction: “We welcome the expansion of the show to provide a greater emphasis on surfaces. The exhibition is really important to us, the 2012 edition allowed us to tap into new shop-fitting customers with a clear interest in designed surfaces. The kitchen manufacturing market is well represented here as well, again increasingly looking for design to make the difference.” The news that Timber Expo, with its additional audience of 5,000 specifiers, will co-locate at the NEC alongside W14 brings further diversity to the 2014 event. W14 event director Angela McGowan is delighted by the co-operation of the two events. “Apart from the very obvious benefit of an expanded event for the visitor this will bring excellent

opportunities to W14 exhibitors. A proportion of the Timber Expo audience naturally specifies materials generally and will have a clear interest in some of the exciting board and surface technology on display at W14,” she commented. “When so many influential industry professionals gather at the NEC, good things are bound to happen.” Of course W14 will still be the UK’s showcase for all sector machinery with its exciting content of running machinery and live demonstration. Indeed, the news from W14 is that the machinery on display will have expanded for 2014, spanning the full range of technology. Visitors will be delighted to see some very innovative partnerships between machinery and materials evident on the exhibition floor. Certainly W14, with its new single logo reflecting an integrated exhibition focussed on meeting all the needs of all UK manufacturers, looks forward to next October with justifiable optimism. www.w14exhibition.com

The number of exhibitors who have already booked, particularly the number who are returning after W12, suggests that W14 will be another successful show.

or more than half a century, the name Busellato has been synonymous with ingenious engineering, innovation and excellence in build quality. When Busellato SpA introduced a new machine called the Favorit in 1967 - believed to be the very first automatic drilling machine capable of performing all drilling operations at any angle - the engineers who designed and built it to the most exacting of standards could not have imagined that examples would still be working in the factories of Italy forty-something years on. Neither, in all probability, could they have foreseen that the reputation for build quality and accuracy which the Favorit helped them establish would find such favour in the German and Swiss markets of the seventies that almost the entire production of this burgeoning Venetian company would be exported. Through the seventies and eighties, Busellato SpA lays claim to a string of firsts: the first fully-automatic borer & dowel inserter in 1970; the first automatic loading boring/dowel inserting machine in 1971; the first numerical

control machining centre for boring and milling operations in 1976; and in 1981, the first completely electronically controlled multi-spindle drilling machine, with more than 20 controlled axes. With the nineties came the launch of a new range of completely innovative working centres. Called the Jet, the new range enabled the company to further strengthen its position in strategic markets, such as the USA, the UK and Spain. As confirmation of the highly organised manufacturing systems employed in its factory, Busellato was granted ISO 9001 quality certification in 2001 and this was further extended with the Vision 2000 certification in 2002. Big changes came in 2007 when Busellato became part of SCM Group SpA and, more recently, when it joined forces with Casadei Macchine, immediately broadening its offer to the furniture manufacturing and woodworking sectors with Casadei’s range of edgebanders, traditional machines, beam saws, sanders and moulders. Busellato and Casadei showed together at Ligna 2013 under a Casadei-Busellato badge,

The marriage between Busellato and Casadei brings two names that are synonymous with engineering excellence together under one flag and provides furniture manufacturers with compatibility as well as the peace of mind that comes from working with RW Machines.

Export Manager Claudio Cortese was keen to point out the benefits of the expanded range and the parallel philosophies of the two companies: “Build quality is very high,” he confirmed. “Both companies share a desire to be the best. You can see this in the technical innovations which are incorporated into the machines. We offer high specifications and good price points without compromising the engineering. They are very reliable machines, designed to work tirelessly. “The Jet Optima is a good example of what Casadei-Busellato can offer. It is compact in design and perfect for small to medium-sized furniture manufacturers who want a machine that allows easy access whilst in use and simple programming to save time. There’s an innovative console table fitted with a tubeless

vacuum system to hold panels securely which reduces machine setup times, a laser pod positioning system for limiting errors and it can be fitted with auxiliary tool changers and an extended chassis length to suit whatever type of work you want to put through it. Like all our work centres, its a very versatile machine.” Busellato’s expertise in the field of machining centres is complemented perfectly by Casadei Macchine’s prowess in edgebanding. And the two work seamlessly together. For high production rates and just-in-time manufacturing, the combination of a Flexa edgebander, a Casadei automatic panel saw and a Busellato machining centre is hard to beat as a working cell. Even the Flexa 27, which is far from the flagship of the Casadei Flexa range, bristles with technology to match the perfect finish achieved by the rugged design of the Jet

In the UK, Casadei-Busellato machines are sold through RW Machines of Bicester. RW’s UK offer focusses on the technologically advanced Jet Optima and Jet Master CNC machining centres and their baby brother, the EasyJet, along with edgebanders ranging from the Flexa F27 up to the uncompromising Flexa 207 Super. According to RW’s Managing Director, David

Thomson-Rowlands, “Casadei-Busellato machining centres are fast machines with inbuilt software that makes life easy for the operator. Build quality tends to be a bit heavier than some of the competitors and there are a some very useful features to the Jet range, like the half-inch-thick phenolic bed, which is repairable. The flatbed CNC is also space efficient because it has inboard vacuum pumps. Having no light barriers or mats in front of the machine is another advantage. Casadei-Busellato use safety bumpers on every corner of the machine. But, ultimately, one of the biggest advantages to owning a Casadei-Busellato is the service that goes with it. You need a reliable machine and you need a reliable service provider. At RW we offer both.” For information call 01869 244943 or visit www.rwmachines.co.uk

deal for furniture components or solid wood machining, the customisable Busellato Optima Jet offers supreme flexibility in a machine that has been solidly engineered and equipped with easy-to-use, realtime software. The basement and the beam of the Jet Optima are made of electrically welded steel. These are ribbed and strengthened internally to guarantee maximum rigidity, even under intense working. The structures undergo a controlled thermal normalisation cycle. A pair of carriages, mounted in a cross-like format, determine the movement of the Y and Z axes, allowing a remarkable reduction in the machine's overall size and improving both performance and functionality. The axes are driven by brushless motors, fed and controlled by parameterised digital drivers. Working fields are 3050mm in the X axis and 1300mm in the Y, with a workpiece clearance of 130mm. Real axes positioning speeds are up to 60m/min in the X axis. The Genesis Evolution numerical control programming editor, based on 32 bit, offers a simple operating environment using graphical windows. The 3D display, which shows six workable faces, provides realtime graphics of machining operations and is compatible with previous versions of Genesis. It allows importation and conversion of CAD files in DXF and XLS format and comes with a user customisable machining toolbar. The operating system is multi-tasking and the control can be used even when the machine is working.

Above/right. The Jet Optima allows manufacturers to choose from a number of tool configurations and tool changer options according to the intended use of the machine. It can be equipped for manufacturing furniture parts (above), or for machining solid wood components and doors. Shown right is the ST 10 tool changer.

n a world where size matters, it is easy to understand why going it alone and setting up your own business is often seen as a daunting prospect. The right support, guidance and expertise is key for a smaller company, as the rapidly growing Kirmington-based Orca Building Products, suppliers of fire doors, washroom products and pvc wall protection, found out very recently. Orca's Manager, Steve Johnson, explains enthusiastically how the rapidly growing Orca team had identified inroads to a huge market for specialist fire doors, supplying hospitals, care homes and other contract applications. Eager to extend the work Orca had already undertaken for numerous hospitals around the country

(including prestigious jobs from London to Liverpool and Birmingham to Teesside) and secure more of the same highly specialist work, Steve and his team set about the task of equipping the company to capitalise on the opportunity before it. He sought advice from a number of sources before asking Coventry-based Ney Ltd for assistance. He recalls being impressed with Ney's reputation in the market and, on first meeting, how Ney's offer included both off-the-shelf and customised machines which could be built to suit Orca's quite specific needs. “Ney also offered extended warranty on the machines, a finance package and with such a large range of supplies, we only needed to go to one place for

The Columbus Combitherm works with materials of up to 3 metres.

The Paoloni planer thicknesser, above, was part of a package of machines that was individually sourced by Coventry-based Ney Ltd and many were modified to suit the work Orca wanted to do more of. Ney’s extensive range made it possible to supply everything from a sophisticated Fravol edgebander to the Maggi cross-cut saw and Harwi saw bench, below.

everything from technical support to edging and adhesives,” says Steve. Working around the company's exact needs, Ney supplied ten new machines including a Project 350 CNC, Fravol RX500 edgebander, Combitherm press, Paoloni planer, Osama glue spreader, Maggi cross-cut saw, Harwi saw bench and various hand tools from Virutex. “Each machine was individually sourced and modified for us,” recalls a delighted Steve. “We now have all the equipment needed to keep moving the company forward.” One particular requirement was that Orca wanted to form PVC products of up to three metres long. “Most off-theshelf vacuum presses accommodate materials up to two metres long,” he says. “Ney was able to source a Combitherm thermo heating oven and a vacuum press that was designed specifically to work with material up to three metres - offering us a 2.7-metre door and three-metre frame.” The Fravol RX500 edgebander was also matched exactly to Orca's work, which requires the application of both hot melt and PU adhesive to a range of materials. But the support from Ney didn't end

with the commissioning of machinery. Once ordered, staff at both Orca and Ney put their heads together to redesign the factory layout and its extraction system around the machinery. Unique areas were built within the factory walls to hold individual machines, whilst a clear assembly route was created to maximise production levels. “Using Ney's know-how, we were able to create an environment that optimised space and minimised waste,” adds Steve. Ney's 35 years of experience working with start-up businesses and smaller manufacturers has provided its front line staff with unique insight into the needs of its chosen sector. Everyone at Ney fully understands that the right support is essential. Ney Ltd has structured its offer, supplying not only machinery, hardware and consumables but also providing advice and guidance to foster success. As part of the package, Ney's comprehensive finance solutions - available on new and used machinery - are also designed to help entrepreneurs turn dreams into reality. inside story Intermac Primus If you are working with solid surfacing materials, glass, stone, textiles, elastomers, plastics (and many other products) and need to cut simple or complex nested components, an Intermac Primus waterjet could be just what you need. Using pure water and cutting omni-directionally at speeds of several hundred feet a minute, a Primus will provide clean cuts and piercings without heat, or the need for secondary finishing operations. Despite the high kinetic energy in water jet cutting, part deformation is avoided and high cutting accuracy is achieved without leaving frayed edges or burrs. Abrasive water jet cutting options make easy work of the cutting of hardened tool steel, titanium, stone and glass up to 150mm in thickness - all with minimal workpiece clamping and without the need for cutting oils or coolants.

Using water as a cutting method has been around for decades but early forms such as the paper metering system of the 1930s used relatively low pressure water. High pressure water jet technology really emerged in the post-war era. With the combination of a durable abrasive water jet nozzle and a reliable high pressure

pump, Intermac water jet cutting machines will cut practically any material up to 150mm thick hardened tool steel. Intermac will be hosting three demo days in Daventry from 21st-23rd January 2014. To arrange a visit call 01327 300366 or email events@biesse.co.uk

Options include single or double high pressure water jet cutting heads and both pure water and abrasive cutting options are available. Minimal fixing of materials is required to the bed and multiple layers of nested components can be cut simultaneously.

&J Wood Machinery is SCM Group UK's recently appointed distributor in the North East of England. Based in Houghton-Le-Spring, Tyne and Wear, partners Graeme Foster and James Graham have over 30 years experience in the woodworking industry and are very well respected engineers by trade with a thorough understanding of the solid wood, joinery, furniture and panel processing industries. G&J Wood Machinery is promoting SCM's Premium range of machinery, including Classical, Panel Processing, CNC Machining Centres and Sanders. It’s a range with a perfect fit for G&J's customer base. Rosebirch Limited is a typical G&J customer, supplying fit-out solutions to a wide range of UK retail companies. Rosebirch has a staff of over 40 and a well equipped workshop including latest technology wood and panel processing machinery. Keen to improve the company’s edgebanding facility, Managing Director Stephen Flynn contacted Graeme Foster and, after detailed discussions, confirmed an order for an SCM Single Sided Automatic Edge Bander, model K260 Evo. The SCM K260 Evo Edge Bander is a compact machine which has been fitted with many of the features found on much larger machines. One is the

RT-V infeed panel edge trimming group that has two contra-rotating cutterblocks to plane any imperfections from the panel edges. The RT-V unit is followed by roll-fed application of melamine, PVC, ABS edgebandings or strips of laminate and solid wood lippings. The K260 copes admirably with lippings of up to 6mm thickness on panels from 8 to 60mm thickness at a feed speed of 9 metres/minute. The K-2 end trimming unit provides rapid set-up between straight and angular cutting with the automatic tilting device and it can also radius corners. A top and bottom edge trimming and finishing group, R-K, follows with rapid changeover between straight and radius finishing with pneumatic positioning and fast adjustments with mechanical readouts. A glue scraping unit and buffing unit remove any sharp edges. Error free programming and optimal visualisation of all production information is provided by the “Orion One Plus” control unit equipped with a 4-inch display. If you’re based in the north-east and would like more information contact G&J Wood Machinery on office@gjwoodmachinery.co.uk (0191 385 5070) or SCM Group (UK) Ltd on scmgroupuk@scmgroup.com (0115 977 0044).

FURNITURE JOURNAL JANUARY 2014

Christian Pfeiffer has taken over the directorship of LIGNA, the leading trade fair for the wood and forestry industries. Pfeiffer has been with Deutsche Messe since April 2012, initially as Project Manager for Metropolitan Solutions before gaining a degree in business administration, and then a series of managerial positions. Pfeiffer and his team will continue to develop and expand Ligna for the next show in May 2015. He succeeds Katariina Rohrbach, who has become the director of a new Hosted Events department in the International Trades Fairs division at Deutsche Messe, due to the success of hosted events at Hannover Exhibition Centre.

Sales for the T75 PreX from Martin, the sliding table saw with tilting range of 2 x 46º, have reached over 800 machines since its launch in 2010 (up to November 2013). Repeating the success of the original T75 in 1959, the first sliding table saw that could be tilted in one direction, Martin is proud of the T75 PreX, with its saw blade that can be tilted to the left by up to 46º, cutting height 204mm. This amounts to a unique angular cutting range of 92º, and, tilted to 45º, the machine reaches a cutting height of approximately 130mm measured vertically from the table - which enables whole components to be cut in one go, minimising errors and making results more accurate. Further refinements include increased motor horsepower of up to 11kW and a cutting angle with an accuracy of 0.01 degrees. The saw blade arbor is moved from both sides, and an ideal solution with ball bearings was found to achieve precise cutting results with the large 550mm diameter blade. The T75 PreX features the user-friendly operation via intuitive touch screen controller common to all Martin sliding table saws, guiding the operator through the process and doing all the necessary adjustments automatically. www.martin.info

All BMB 900 powerProfiler processing centres already delivered to customers are released from any claims and can continue to be used without restriction. Homag is now entitled to supply an agreed number of processing centres with the Weinig patent until the end of 2014 and manufacture thse until 2015 using the Weinig patent. The Weinig patent continues to stand in Germany and is recognised in its entirety by Homag. The damages incurred by Weinig will be settled by Homag via a compensation payment although the content of the settlement agreement remains confidential.

Makita power tools have enabled Gavin Randall, founder of the Traditional Surfing Company, to substantially improve the performance of his boards to the point where he claims that the Rocket, his latest design, “is the best performing board in the world”. The shape of the traditional belly boards has remained largely unchanged for 50 years and, although high quality marine ply is the core material, the perfect performance is in the shapes embodied in the board. Radical shapes and high quality finishes can be achieved with the power tools and these are vital to increase speed and stability. Gavin uses the Makita BKP180 1/2inch mains router to refine the intricate shapes and contours of the boards after using Makita’s lithium-ion powered jigsaw and planer to cut and shape the overall design. He praises the cordless jigsaw as “without a cord it feels so free, but perhaps most importantly this Makita saw allows me to cut more boards, more accurately, with the added benefit that heightened accuracy makes a great belly board. I love these tools, they make work fun!” www.makitauk.com
